Feedback on the Feedback Forms

Feedback on the Feedback Forms

At Everything Dinosaur we get lots of pictures, letters, emails and feedback forms from our customers.  We love receiving them and we do read them all.  Every morning, one of the jobs that is done around 10am, after all the mail has arrived is to divide up the feedback responses we have received and allocate them to a member of staff to respond in person to all those that require a reply.  We also divide up our email information requests, and customer comments that we have received from other sources such as faxes, letters and so forth.

Each team member is given a batch to work through, during the day and normally by close of play we have done them all.

We enjoy reading the letters and customer comments, many of the pictures and drawings that are sent in are posted up on the warehouse notice board, they certainly make a colourful montage.

One of the benefits of carrying out this process is that we get to learn about products and how they are received and used by our customers.  This has certainly helped our product knowledge and works well, complementing our own product testing programmes.  Any correspondence that deserves special attention can be dealt with immediately and if required an update can be provided by the team member responsible at our weekly Friday afternoon meeting.

All the letters, comments, pictures and drawings we receive certainly makes for a lively discussion during our mid-morning tea break.

Van Makes Dinosaur Company a Roaring Success!

By |2023-01-01T22:52:54+00:00January 6th, 2010|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Van Makes Dinosaur Company a Roaring Success!

For small companies and start up businesses choosing a company van can be fraught with difficulties, especially if the management is not familiar with commercial vehicles.  For team members at Everything Dinosaur, the choice of vehicle was critical, after all, it would have to transport prehistoric animals.

It had always been an ambition of Mike’s to go into business, turning an interest in fossils and palaeontology into a retail company selling prehistoric animal themed products.  As the company, aptly named Everything Dinosaur, expanded and there was increased demand for Mike and his partner Sue Judd to visit schools to provide dinosaur themed lessons, it became increasingly apparent that the business was going to have to acquire a commercial vehicle.  However, neither Mike nor Sue had ever owned a van before and a lack of judgement could have caused Everything Dinosaur to go extinct.

“For us it was a big decision, we wanted a van that would be a reliable and dependable, but also capable of displaying the vehicle graphics required to promote our business, without incurring additional costs from the signage company”, commented Mike.

In the end the choice of transport for the company was straight forward and a Vauxhall Combo CDTI was selected.  Combining economy with a large payload proved a winning combination, the lack of wheel arch intrusion and the helpful low loading height enabling the Combo to cope with some very peculiar cargoes such as models of dinosaur stomachs and a full size replica of a Triceratops jawbone.

“We wanted a commercial vehicle that would help embellish our company image with bodywork that could easily accommodate complex vinyl graphics.  After all, it’s not everyday that a signage company is asked to put a Tyrannosaurus rex on the back of a van”.

The perky 1.7 litre engine has taken trips to remote fossil dig sites as well city centre museums in its stride and the comfortable interior is greatly appreciated especially if staff have been on their feet teaching all day.  Everything Dinosaur may specialise in dinosaurs and these huge creatures may not be known for having big brains, but at least for this unusual company the purchase of a Vauxhall Combo has proved to be a very smart decision.

Everything Dinosaur Predictions for 2010

By |2023-03-03T22:46:18+00:00January 5th, 2010|Categories: Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal News Stories, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur Predictions for 2010

Time again for us at Everything Dinosaur to put our collective heads on the block and to try and second guess some of the news stories and palaeontological discoveries that are likely to take place over the next twelve months.  After quite a bit of debate and discussion amongst our team members, we have come up with a list of predictions as to what we think is going to happen, crystal ball gazing is not really our strong point but we have given it a go and early in 2011 we shall look back with trepidation to see how we did.

Everything Dinosaur

So in no particular order, here we go:

More Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Animals to go Under the Hammer

The trend for more specialist auctions of prehistoric artefacts and relics will continue.  In 2009, there were a number of high profile auctions held in Paris, London and Las Vegas with lots as varied as stone age implements, Sabre Tooth Cat skulls and fully mounted dinosaur skeletons.  We suspect that a number of large scale auctions will take place with a number of complete dinosaur fossils up for grabs.  Prices are likely to remain subdued, with the high figures of the late nineties and the noughties a distant memory.

Increased Pressure for Change in UK Museum Funding

With high levels of public debt in the United Kingdom and concerns over how to relieve the level of indebtedness of the UK Government, it is likely that there are going to be some dramatic cuts in public spending.  No prizes for us for stating the obvious; but one area that may come under increased scrutiny is the level of subvention provided to museums.  Many museums in Britain are free to enter, as a result of changes in Government funding in the late 1990s that led to increased subsidies and financial support for such institutions.

With the need to save money on public spending, free to enter museums such as the Natural History Museum in London may see their subvention and support cut and charges may have to be introduced.

“Dakota” to Hit the Headlines Once Again

Over the last three years or so we have covered a number of news stories and articles concerning the on-going research into the beautifully preserved Hadrosaurine dinosaur nicknamed Dakota.  This mummified Edmontosaurus is likely to reveal more secrets concerning Ornithischian anatomy and skin texture.

Criminal Charges for a Palaeontologist in the United States

One of the first changes made by President Obama when he came into office, was to strengthen legislation concerning the theft of ancient artefacts, relics and fossils from public land.  With the high prices that some fossils can fetch on the black market, we predict that there will be at least one reported court case concerning the extraction of fossils from public land and the falsifying of palaeontological records.  Expect more arrests regarding the excavation of dinosaur fossils.

The Everything Dinosaur Trilobite Hunt – At Last

For a number of years, team members at Everything Dinosaur have discussed the possibility of going on a trilobite hunt.  These highly successful, but now extinct arthropods hold a special fascination for us.  Many of the team members have had the opportunity to visit locations where trilobite fossils have been found.  However, we have never organised a company trip to find trilobite fossils.  We know of a number of secret locations where good quality trilobite fossils can be found and 2010 might just be the year when we take up the opportunity to visit one of these sites.

Naturally, if we find some fossils we will take far more photographs of the fossils in situ than take away specimens and of course we will leave plenty behind for other visitors.  May be we should put some pictures up on this web log of our trilobite hunt.

Increasing Emphasis on Science Teaching in UK Primary Schools

For a number of years now there has been slow and steady progress made by Primary and Secondary schools supported by various agencies to increase the amount of science and mathematics based teaching offered.  We expect that the work of Government backed educational organisations will become increasingly effective and more specialist lessons will be offered in support of the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4.  National academic achievement statistics will show a continued improvement in the level of knowledge and understanding of science subjects.

March Marks a Millennium for Everything Dinosaur Web Log

We predict that by the end of March 2010, the Everything Dinosaur web log will have reached the landmark of 1,000 published articles, representing something like 1.2 million published words.  The web log (blog) began on Sunday May 27th 2007, it now takes up a considerable amount of band width and we continue to try add a new article or picture every single day.  We managed to go over the magic 100,000 page views back in August, we continue to attract more than 100,000 page views a month which is fantastic and we are grateful to all our readers and contributors.

As for predicting how many page views we will achieve by the end of 2010, that is a little tricky as we don’t have a great deal of experience in this field – however, we have had a sweep-stake round the office (the winner gets first choice of all the biscuits in the office for a month) and it seems that something close to 135,000 page views by the end of the year might be possible.  Here’s hoping.

New Genus of Pterosaur to be Announced

We would expect 2010 to continue the trend with many new dinosaur discoveries announced, however, we are plumping for a new genus of pterosaur to come to light over the next twelve months.  Pterosaur fossils are extremely rare in the fossil record, the delicate, light, air-filled bones do not fossilise readily and pterosaur discoveries tend to be much rarer than announcements concerning the discovery of new dinosaurs.  Northeastern China or Brazil with its famous Santana Formation are likely locations for such a discovery.

Beware of Smugglers

Despite the depressed market for dinosaur and other prehistoric animal fossils, we predict that there will be more smuggling of fossils and other valuable items onto the black market in 2010.  No doubt there will be some dubious items posted up onto Ebay and other auction websites to catch out the unwary.  We are expecting a major news story over the last year concerning the discovery and exposure of a significant fossil smuggling ring.

Last but not Least a thought for South Africa

In June and July the world’s sporting focus will be on South Africa with the football world cup taking place.  Although, we can’t predict a win for England (it would be lovely and they may make the semi-finals), but with all that Permian and Triassic strata in the country we predict that sometime in 2010 the discovery of new reptilian fossils will be announced in South Africa.  We could have suggested more dinosaur finds from Queensland in Australia, with the amount of excavation work going on down-under as it were, there is  a very good chance of new discoveries being made.  Perhaps a new genus of Dicynodont or something like that will emerge out of southern Africa.

Predictions for the Year Ahead

So there you have it, our just for a bit of fun, predictions for the year ahead.  At the end of this year we will review this article and see how well (or badly) we did.

In the meantime, here is a link to the Everything Dinosaur website: Everything Dinosaur.

Everything Dinosaur Blog – Averaging an Amazing 100,000 page views per Month

By |2024-04-19T09:21:28+01:00December 29th, 2009|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|1 Comment

Everything Dinosaur Blog – 100,000 page views per Month

The Everything Dinosaur blog site continues to go from strength to strength.  With nearly 900 articles published, the site is getting quite big these days.  We try to write an article each day, something about our company, dinosaur discoveries, science news and such like.  A review of the web log’s site statistics show that over the last quarter the web log (otherwise known as a blog) has registered an average of more than 100,000 page views per month.

Everything Dinosaur

Sometime before the spring of 2010 we are due to publish our 1,000th article, to keep a blog going in these busy times is an achievement in itself and we are very grateful for all the comments and feedback we receive.  We have tried to estimate the number of words written in the blog to date, this is very difficult to do, but with nearly 900 articles we calculate that something like one million words have now been published.

The Everything Dinosaur Blog

Our plans for 2010 include keeping up with the daily web log articles, perhaps by the end of next year we will have increased our readership and page views still further – perhaps 150,000 page views could be achieved?

Working Hard to Ensure Orders are Packed and Despatched

This time of year, things get a little hectic for the team members at Everything Dinosaur, what with all the Christmas orders coming in.  We really love this time of year, it is great to be involved and helping to make all those young dinosaur fan’s Christmas mornings get off to a fantastic start.  Mums and Dads are pleased to have us on their side too, after all, not everyone knows where to get hold of an Amargasaurus at short notice.

Packing and Despatching Orders

Trouble is, if we are not careful our own Christmas shopping plans tend to get postponed.  At the moment we are open even longer hours than usual and packing and despatching six days a week.  This leaves us little time for Christmas shopping so we have all got used to doing our Christmas shopping in October and November.

Keeping Cheerful Packing Orders

One thing we have noticed is that we seem to drink more coffee and tea this time of year, perhaps it is chilly in the warehouse or just all these early morning starts.  Still we keep cheerful and can look forward to the 25th of December, although putting up Christmas decorations in the office is a bit difficult, firstly there is not a lot of room and secondly it is finding the time to put them up during this busy period.

Muttering like a Muttaburrasaurus – Our Unique Company Culture

By |2024-04-18T14:59:24+01:00November 26th, 2009|Categories: Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Strange Phrases in the Office

Muttering like a Muttaburrasaurus – colloquialisms at work.

I suppose it had to happen sooner or later, after all we are just like any other group of people working together in an office/warehouse environment, we have developed our own special terms, a sort of modified language.

Over the years as we have worked on all sorts of prehistoric animal projects, a kind of vernacular or short-hand develops to describe certain prehistoric animals.  Models and merchandise related to Diplodocus are known as “Dips” amongst us.  In a similar fashion Triceratops has been shortened to “Trys”.

With some dinosaur genus names exceeding twenty letters or more I suppose abbreviations were inevitable, however, we have noticed that certain expressions have now crept in, ones that are probably unique to Everything Dinosaur and our kind of business.

Muttaburrasaurus

For example, when somebody does something well, we say that they have got “the big Iguanodon thumbs up”, a reference to the massive defensive spike on the first digit of this type of dinosaur.  Indeed, it is the iguanodontids that seem to have inspired a number of terms and expressions.  “Muttering like a Muttaburrasaurus” is quite popular in the office at the moment, especially as we have so much to do at the moment, what with packing Christmas orders and other projects that are rolling out into 2010.  Muttaburrasaurus may have been a very vocal dinosaur, the bony bump on the snout may have been an adaptation to allow these large herbivores to vocalise loudly, however, scientists cannot be certain.  This dinosaur was not named in recognition of a perception that it was noisy, the genus is named after Muttaburra Station the site of the first fossils found.  The species name Muttaburrasaurus langdoni honours rancher Doug Langdon who found the first specimen back in 1963.

Interview with Everything Dinosaur about Jurassic Wars

By |2023-03-03T17:32:56+00:00November 6th, 2009|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Jurassic Wars – The Everything Dinosaur Interview

Jurassic Wars the dice based dinosaur combat game from those clever people at Dice Maestro has just won the prestigious Toy Talk product of the year, in the board and card games product category.  Like all the products featured on the Everything Dinosaur website, this dinosaur themed game went through our testing programme.  The comments and feedback from our testers and reviewers helps to decide what goes into our shop.

Jurassic Wars

As well as providing a fun, combat game involving lots of dinosaurs, (we really liked the computer generated pictures on the game cards), the game designers have tried hard to incorporate elements of the latest thinking about dinosaurs into the product.  The is much to praise this Jurassic Wars dinosaur dice game.

The Award Winning Jurassic Wars Game

To view the wide range of dinosaur and prehistoric animal themed gifts available from Everything Dinosaur’s award-winning website: Visit Everything Dinosaur.

The Interview

We were asked to provide some feedback on Jurassic Wars and the interview is reproduced below.

1). Why do you think dinosaurs are so popular with children?

Dinosaurs seem to fascinate children and grown ups alike, there is nothing around like them today and as a group, dinosaurs thrived for over 150 million years. On average, a new dinosaur species is named and described every six weeks. Remote areas of the world are being explored for fossils, places such as Antarctica and the Australian outback, this exploration, coupled with the development of innovative technologies to study already prepared specimens, is helping scientists to learn so much more about these prehistoric animals.

2). Does Jurassic Wars help inform and educate young people about dinosaurs?

Jurassic Wars features twenty different dinosaurs, some of the most famous dinosaurs are included in the playing cards, animals such as the fearsome Tyrannosaurus rex, and Megalosaurus, the first dinosaur to be formerly named and scientifically described. However, Dice Maestro is keen to include representatives of less well known dinosaur genera, animals such as the bizarre Amargasaurus from South America. By playing the game, children can gain an understanding of the extraordinary diversity of the dinosaurs. It is also pleasing to see that a pronunciation guide is provided for every Dinocard, that attention to detail was noted by our product testers and is bound to be appreciated by mums and dads.

3). You Queried the Exact Duration of the Geological Time Periods Featured in Jurassic Wars – why is this important?

The Game Period cards on the timeline deck, feature two geological periods, these are divided into three chunks of time which are relevant to game play. Some leeway is given with regards to the start and ending of each geological period, due to the immense difficulties in correlating information relating to the accurate date of strata and the analysis of fossils they contain. However, most palaeontologists agree that the Jurassic period lasted from around 201 million years ago to approximately 144 million years ago, with the Cretaceous covering the time between 144 million years ago and the end of the Mesozoic Era approximately 66 million years ago

Defining geological time periods is the task of the International Commission on Stratigraphy; any changes proposed by this particular scientific body are then approved and ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences, an international non-governmental organisation. Working to the same set of rules when it comes to defining geological time scales, helps scientists’ co-ordinate research and aids the consistency of reporting.

The geological time periods in Jurassic Wars encourage debate, allows questions to be asked and gives us the opportunity to explain the concept of geological time.

4). Some of the stunning computer generated dinosaur images show feathered dinosaurs, what is the significance of this?

A number of Dinocards in Jurassic Wars such as the cards representing Dromaeosaurus and Deinonychus show these animals covered in downy feathers. These illustrations reflect current scientific thinking that many smaller, active dinosaurs, especially theropods (a group of dinosaurs that includes the bipedal meat-eaters) were warm-blooded and covered with insulating feathers.

Several fossils of a sub-group of theropods, the Maniraptorans (the name means hand-snatchers) that includes the so-called “raptor dinosaurs” with the killer claws on the hind feet such as Deinonychus and Dromaeosaurus, indicate the presence of feathers. Scientists have put forward the theory that many more, small, meat-eating dinosaurs were feathered, but only a few fossils have been sufficiently well-preserved to leave any trace of feathers in the specimen. Feathered dinosaurs may have actually been quite common.  Recent discoveries indicate that a number of small plant-eating dinosaurs may have also been feathered and feathered dinosaur fossils have been found in rocks dating back to the Middle Jurassic.

5). How do we know that dinosaurs fought each other?

We can observe animals fighting each other today, either different species fighting such as meat-eaters attacking plant-eaters (we call this interspecific combat) or animals of the same species competing for mates, or for social status in a herd (we call this intraspecific combat). Dinosaurs competed with each other, in the same way that animals alive today do.  A close examination of fossilised bones can provide evidence of the injuries that dinosaurs suffered.  For example, the lower left leg of the Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton on display at the Field Museum in Chicago, show signs of a break that subsequently healed.

It has been suggested that this injury was caused when this particular T. rex was bashed on the leg by the massive tail club of an Ankylosaurus.  Both Tyrannosaurus rex and Ankylosaurus are featured in Jurassic Wars and there is some evidence in the fossil record to support the theory that these two, huge Late Cretaceous dinosaurs may have battled it out in a life or death struggle.

A Unique Everything Dinosaur 2010 Dinosaur Calendar

By |2024-04-18T07:16:52+01:00October 31st, 2009|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Educational Activities, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur 2010 Dinosaur Calendar

Everything Dinosaur team members have created a special dinosaur and prehistoric animal themed calendar which is available from the company’s website.

Scientists don’t really know what colour dinosaurs were, as only very rarely does any form of pigmentation fossilise.  Illustrations of dinosaurs and various CGI reconstructions are based on scientific assumption.  One of the coolest things about dinosaurs is that when you colour in a picture of a Stegosaurus and make it bright blue, nobody can actually say that your interpretation is inaccurate.  Your guess is as good as any highly respected palaeontologist, we simply don’t know what colour stegosaurs were.

A Dinosaur Calendar

Now is the  chance to put your creative minds to the test with the 2010 Everything Dinosaur calendar.  Each month features an illustration of a different prehistoric animal and you have the chance to colour it in and show the world what colour you thought dinosaurs were.  The 2010 calendar, which is available now, features Chasmosaurus, Tarbosaurus, Nigersaurus, Triceratops and of course Tyrannosaurus rex, plus lots of other prehistoric animals.
