The New PNSO Russo the Coronosaurus Dinosaur Model

By |2025-04-26T06:25:07+01:00April 25th, 2025|PNSO Age of Dinosaurs Models|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur will be stocking the new for 2025 PNSO Russo the Coronosaurus dinosaur model. This new horned dinosaur figure will be in stock shortly.  The last four dinosaur models to be introduced by PNSO have all been horned dinosaurs.

The models are:

  • Frederik the Lokiceratops (Centrosaurinae).
  • Judith the Spiclypeus (Chasmosaurinae).
  • Stella the Stellasaurus (Centrosaurinae).
  • Russo the Coronosaurus (Centrosaurinae).

The New PNSO Russo the Coronosaurus Dinosaur Model

The new Coronosaurus dinosaur model measures sixteen centimetres in length.  Those beautiful and ornate frills on the top of the neck frill are a little over five centimetres off the ground. Originally thought to represent a new species of Centrosaurus, a review in 2012 led to the establishment of the Coronosaurus genus. The name means “crown lizard”. It is a reference to the numerous additional epiparietals that adorn the parietal giving the neck frill a crown-like appearance. Moreover, one of the palaeontologists that named this dinosaur, Michael J. Ryan stated that the neck shield ornamentation reminded him of the corona of the sun.

Michael J. Ryan was also one of the scientists that described Stellasaurus (S. ancellae). Recently, PNSO announced that they were adding a Stellasaurus figure to their range.

A Beautiful Centrosaurine Figure

Coronosaurus (C. brinkmani) is a member of the ceratopsid subfamily the Centrosaurinae.  It is estimated to have measured around five metres in length and weighed approximately two tonnes. Coronosaurus fossil material is known from two bone beds, both located in Alberta, Canada. These bone beds consist of strata associated with the upper unit of the Oldman Formation. Coronosaurus roamed southern Canada around seventy-seven million years ago.

A Stellasaurus Scale Drawing

This horned dinosaur was formally described in 2020 (Wilson, Ryan and Evans). Its fossils are associated with the famous Two Medicine Formation of Montana (USA). When first studied, the fragmentary remains were thought to represent a new taxon. However, subsequent studies assigned the material to Rubeosaurus. The 2020, study led to a reassessment and the Stellasaurus genus was erected.

The Centrosaurine Stellasaurus ancellae

Stellasaurus ancellae is thought to have measured approximately five metres in length.  It weighed around two tonnes, and it lived during the Campanian faunal stage of the Late Cretaceous (circa 75 million years ago).

The genus name translates from the Latin as “star lizard”. This reflects the ornate, star-shaped head crest but also honours the late pop star David Bowie. David Bowie was famous for his extravagant outfits and flamboyant stage show. His hit single “Starman” was released on April 28th, 1972. This is almost forty-eight years to the day that the Stellasaurus scientific paper was published.

Mike from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We like to commission scale drawings of prehistoric animals.  This means we can support the palaeoart community.  The fact sheets we research and write are sent out free to our customers. It is one of the ways in which we try to support education and science communication.”

PNSO Announces a New Horned Dinosaur Model

By |2025-03-23T11:29:48+00:00March 23rd, 2025|PNSO Age of Dinosaurs Models|0 Comments

PNSO has announced that they are making a new horned dinosaur figure. The PNSO Stella the Stellasaurus will be in stock at Everything Dinosaur soon.  This is the third ceratopsian in a row that this manufacturer has introduced.  Lokiceratops is now in stock at Everything Dinosaur, and Judith the Spiclypeus will be in stock soon.  Like Lokiceratops, Stellasaurus is a member of the Centrosaurinae ceratopsian subfamily.  In contrast, Spiclypeus is a chasmosaurine.

Mike from Everything Dinosaur stated that Stella the Stellasaurus will be in stock later in the spring.

PNSO Stella the Stellasaurus.

The new horned dinosaur figure, the PNSO Stella the Stellasaurus.

PNSO Stella the Stellasaurus

Stellasaurus (S. ancellae), was formally named and described in 2020 (Wilson, Ryan and Evans).  The flamboyant headshield with its enlarged epiparietals reminded the researchers of a star.  Hence the use of the Latin term for a star “Stella” in the genus name.  In addition, Stellasaurus pays tribute to the late British musician and song writer David Bowie.  Bowie released the single “Starman” in late April 1972.  The scientific paper describing this new taxon was published almost exactly forty-eight years later (late April 2020).

The species name honours Museum of the Rockies field palaeontologist and fossil preparator Carrie Ancell.  It was Ancell who discovered and prepared the holotype specimen (MOR 492).

The PNSO Stella the Stellasaurus will be supplied with an A3-sized, full-colour poster. Furthermore, the model comes complete with a full-colour, sixty-four-page booklet.

A Transitional Form

The scientific paper describing this new North American ceratopsian was published by Royal Society Open Science.  In the paper, the researchers postulated that Stellasaurus ancellae could represent a transitional form within the Centrosaurinae.  The fossil material comes from the famous Two Medicine Formation of north-western Montana (USA). This dinosaur lived around seventy-five million years ago (Campanian faunal stage). From a stratigraphical perspective, the Stellasaurus fossil material is younger than Styracosaurus albertensis fossils, but older than fossils assigned to Einiosaurus.

That flamboyant head shield with its various lumps and bumps could reflect a transitional stage between the headshield morphology of Styracosaurus and that of Einiosaurus.

How Big is the PNSO Stella the Stellasaurus Model?

The fossil material assigned to S. ancellae is believed to represent a mature, adult animal. Scientists estimate that this dinosaur grew to a length of approximately five metres.  It may have weighed around two tonnes.

The PNSO Stella the Stellasaurus model measures fifteen centimetres in length. Although, no scale is declared by PNSO, Mike from Everything Dinosaur suggested that this new figure would represent a 1:33 scale model.

The New for 2025 PNSO Lokiceratops

The centrosaurine was formally named and described in 2024 (Loewen et al). The fossil material comes from Judith River Formation (Campanian) exposures in northern Montana.

To read Everything Dinosaur’s blog post about the discovery of Lokiceratops: Lokiceratops a New Horned Dinosaur from Montana.

The large number of similar horned dinosaur taxa identified from this part of North America suggests that dinosaur diversity has been underestimated. Moreover, there is considerable evidence to indicate centrosaurines were living and evolving in a small geographic area (high endemism). This high endemism identified in the Centrosaurinae subfamily contrasts with the extensive (historic) ranges seen in most large extant mammals.

In total, five ceratopsians have been described from this small area of northern Montana.  To date, four centrosaurines and one chasmosaurine have been described:

  • Wendiceratops pinhornensis.
  • Albertaceratops nesmoi.
  • Medusaceratops lokii.
  • Lokiceratops rangiformis.
  • Judiceratops tigris (the chasmosaurine).

Mike from Everything Dinosaur welcomed the new PNSO figure and commented.

“Congratulations to PNSO for making a model of a horned dinosaur that has only recently been scientifically described.”

Maxim the Baryonyx Model – A New Review

By |2024-11-21T14:09:06+00:00November 18th, 2024|PNSO Age of Dinosaurs Models|0 Comments

Our thanks to model collector and dinosaur fan William who sent into Everything Dinosaur a review of the recently introduced PNSO Maxim the Baryonyx model.  William explained that he was delighted to be able to acquire an accurate Baryonyx dinosaur model. In addition to reviewing the figure, he also provided a summary of how the first fossilised remains of this spinosaurid were discovered.

Maxim the Baryonyx

Wandering close to the water. An image of the new for 2024 Maxim the Baryonyx dinosaur model.

The Discovery of Baryonyx walkeri

According to the reviewer, it was a brisk January morning in 1983, when amateur fossil hunter William Walker visited one of his favourite fossil hunting sites.  He parked his trusty, green Vauxhall Chevette at the Smokejack Clay Pit and proceeded to hunt for fossils.  He was a plumber by profession but at heart he was a palaeontologist following the tradition of Victorian gentlefolk who documented the flora and fauna of the past.

A rugby-ball-sized nodule was spotted with a partial claw exposed on its surface along with the associated phalanx and a fragment of rib bone.  William broke the nodule apart with his rock hammer and the fossils were taken home and carefully cleaned and prepared.  He had found the claw of an unknown dinosaur.  Having discussed what he should do with his daughter Rita and her husband Trevor, it was decided to contact the London Natural History Museum.

Dr Angela Milner’s secretary was the first person at the museum to view the fossil discovery.  Dr Milner was contacted and once she had examined the specimen it was agreed that a field team led by palaeontologists Alan J. Charig and Angela C. Milner would be despatched to the site to search for more fossil remains.

Named and Described in 1986

The field team worked for many weeks.  Eventually two tons of siltstone was taken from the site and the careful removal of the matrix to reveal the fossil material commenced. Ultimately, the research team recovered almost seventy percent of the skeleton.  It was the most complete dinosaur skeleton found in the UK.  Baryonyx walkeri was formally named and described in 1986 (Charig and Milner).

Media outlets nicknamed the new discovery “Claws” trying to add a splash movie monster magic to heighten interest.  Analysis of stomach contents revealed the remains of a fish and a juvenile iguanodontid’s rib bone.  An example of “surf and turf”.  Thirty-eight years later, PNSO have introduced an excellent replica of Baryonyx walkeri.

The PNSO Maxim the Baryonyx Model Review

William began his review by commenting on the head sculpt.  He explained that the head of the figure was accurate with nostrils in the right position, a sagittal crest and that conspicuous kinked jaw.  The eye colouration and painting of the mouth were praised.  The scales on the body were highlighted and William commented upon the skin folds and the presence of a cloaca.

The proportions of the forearms and hindlimbs were praised and the only criticism offered concerned the size of the claw on the first digit.  William thought this claw should have been larger and more robust.  The colouration of the figure was described as light olive with a strong wash of pale orange over the neck, flanks and stomach.  The figure has black stripes breaking up the orange and olive colours.

William confirmed the scale as 1:35 and explained that the model measured over nine inches long and stood three and a half inches high.  The PNSO Maxim the Baryonyx figure is supplied with an acrylic support stand, colour booklet and a poster.

The reviewer went onto provide some information about Baryonyx walkeri.

Time Period: 139.8–112 million years ago.
Early Cretaceous, Weald Clay Formation of Surrey.
Location: United Kingdom (Surrey, England).

Year of discovery: 1983.

Classification: Theropoda.
Superfamily: Spinosauridae.
Family: Baryonychinae.
Type species: Baryonyx walkeri.

Weight: 1.2-2 tons.
Length: 25-33 foot.
Height: 8 foot.

The Palaeoenvironment

William described the environment in which Baryonyx lived as being similar to a Mediterranean climate.  There were marshes, mudflats and shallow lagoons.  A modern analogue could be the subtropical Camargue coastal region of southern France.  Other Baryonychinae are known such as Ceratosuchops inferodios and Riparovenator milnerae (named in honour of the late Dr Angela Milner).

To read more about the life and career of Dr Angela Milner: Paying Tribute to Dr Angela Milner.

The reviewer stated that other theropods were known from the Wealden Group such as the carcharodontosaurid Neovenator salerii.

William commented that ornithischian dinosaurs were also present referring to iguanodontids and the armoured dinosaur Polacanthus foxii.

In conclusion, he stated:

“The arrival of this brace of Baryonychinae concludes my grail quest of nearly a decade to own an accurate example and it was truly worth the years of patiently waiting for one to be released.”

In Praise of Everything Dinosaur

William reserved his final comments for Everything Dinosaur.  He thanked the company for bringing the Maxim the Baryonyx model into stock and he commented:

“Purchasing from Everything Dinosaur is fast, safe and secure.  There is no nonsense.  Customer service and care is of the highest level.”

The Beautiful PNSO Yangchuanosaurus Dinosaur Model

By |2024-11-17T20:23:43+00:00November 16th, 2024|PNSO Age of Dinosaurs Models|0 Comments

Team members enjoy taking photographs of dinosaur models.  Photographs of prehistoric animal figures are helpful to customers.  In addition, we can highlight details on the figures and discuss the accessories that are often included in the packaging.  For example, we were able to take some photographs of the recently introduced PNSO Yangchuanosaurus dinosaur model (Dayong). Dayong is a replica of Y. shangyouensis.  This dinosaur taxon was named and described in 1978.  The PNSO figure was introduced in the autumn of 2023.

The PNSO Yangchuanosaurus Dinosaur Model

The PNSO figure is a replica of a metriacanthosaurid theropod.  Its fossils come from south-western China (Chongqing Province). PNSO introduced two Yangchuanosaurus figures. Firstly, Dayong the Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis and secondly Dapeng, a replica of Yangchuanosaurus magnus.

The discovery of a much larger theropod skeleton led to the erection of a second species in the Yangchuanosaurus genus. However, it is now thought by most palaeontologists that Yangchuanosaurus magus should have nomen dubium status. That is, that this species is not valid, and the skeletal remains represent an older and much larger specimen of Y. shangyouensis. PNSO did introduce a replica of Y. magus at the same time as Dayong the Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis.

New Baryonyx Model Arrives on a Memorable Date

By |2024-11-01T16:02:34+00:00November 1st, 2024|PNSO Age of Dinosaurs Models|0 Comments

The new PNSO Baryonyx model has arrived at Everything Dinosaur.  The delivery coincides with an important date in the history of spinosaurids.  For, as the PNSO Maxim the Baryonyx was being unloaded, our thoughts turned to November 1st 1986.  It was on this day thirty-eight years ago that the scientific paper describing Baryonyx (B. walkeri) was published. Sadly, the two authors of that publication Alan J. Charig and Angela Milner have both passed away. However, as we unloaded the boxes today, we took time out to reflect on their immense contribution to vertebrate palaeontology.

The title of the 1986 scientific paper was “Baryonyx, a remarkable new theropod dinosaur”, it introduced an entirely different type of carnivorous dinosaur.  It is wonderful to see that, thirty-eight years later, Baryonyx is still fascinating collectors and dinosaur fans.

Alan Charig and Angela Milner significantly advanced our understanding of prehistoric life through their ground-breaking discoveries.  During our busy day, we spared a few moments to remember them.

Providing Information on the Giganotosaurini

William provided some information on the Giganotosaurini.  Tyrannotitan (T. chubutensis), is regarded by many palaeontologists as a basal member of this tribe.  It was stated that fossils of this large theropod were found in the Chubut Province of southern Argentina. The fossil material is believed to have come from the Cerro Castaño Member of the Cerro Barcino Formation.  These deposits were laid down in the Early Cretaceous (Aptian faunal stage).

New PNSO Camarasaurus Model Coming into Stock

By |2024-08-25T16:11:05+01:00August 25th, 2024|PNSO Age of Dinosaurs Models|0 Comments

PNSO have announced that their next dinosaur model will be a replica of Camarasaurus.  The new PNSO Camarasaurus model will be coming into stock at Everything Dinosaur in the autumn.  Team members had known about this figure and the shipment of the figure has been organised.  It will be on the same shipment as the recently announced PNSO Baryonyx model. The new sauropod has been named Njor the Camarasaurus.

PNSO Camarasaurus model.

The new for late 2024 PNSO Camarasaurus figure (Njor). This is the latest sauropod figure to be introduced by PNSO.

PNSO Camarasaurus Model

The PNSO Camarasaurus model demonstrates some remarkable detail.  Fossils ascribed to the Camarasaurus taxon are the most common sauropod fossils found in the Morrison Formation.
Four species are currently recognised. The genus was erected in 1877 (Cope). It is a member of the Macronaria clade. They are differentiated from the diplodocids in several ways. For example, the forelimbs are enlarged in relation to their hindlimbs. The chest and shoulders were held higher than other sauropods. This reached an extreme with macronarians such as Giraffatitan and Brachiosaurus.

The limb proportions in Camarasaurus are not as acute, Camarasaurus is regarded as a basal member of the Macronaria.

To view the range of PNSO models and figures in stock at Everything Dinosaur: PNSO Dinosaur Models.

The “Big Noses”

The Macronaria means “big noses”.  The bony frames of the nostrils were much larger than the orbits (eye sockets).  It is not known why these dinosaurs had this feature.  The fleshy openings of the nostrils would have been much smaller.  However, in the PNSO Camarasaurus model the nasal area has been raised and made prominent.

The PNSO Njor the Camarasaruus model in close-up view.

The PNSO Camarasaurus figure has an innovative interpretation of the nostrils of a macronarian sauropod.

Whatever, the reason for the large nasal openings in the skull, the macronarians were extremely successful.  Whilst their cousins, the diplodocids declined after the Early Cretaceous and became rare, the “big noses” continued to thrive.  The majority of the Cretaceous sauropods including the titanosaurs represent the macronarian lineage.

The new for 2024 Camarasaurus model measures thirty-five centimetres long.  The head height is a fraction under twenty-four centimetres.

Mike from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We are looking forward to the arrival of Njor the Camarasaurus.  PNSO have already introduced several sauropod figures including the diplodocoid Amargasaurus and the macronarian Alamosaurus.”
