Courier Collection Incident Quickly Resolved by Everything Dinosaur Team

Everything Dinosaur customer service reputation is extremely good.  However, even the best companies can sometimes make small mistakes.  For example, even after more than twenty years in business, things do not quite go to plan.

Recently, Mike was helping Sue load customer parcels onto the various courier vehicles ready for despatch to customers. However, in a moment of misplaced confidence, he handed a batch of parcels to the wrong courier.

Thankfully, Sue spotted the mistake. As a result, every parcel was transferred to the correct courier and all customer deliveries continued as planned.

Although no customers were affected, the incident inspired a little office humour. We dug out one of our old “Site Safety” signs and reset the counter.  As the incident safety sign notes – Mike’s embarrassment level was high!

Number of Days Since a Courier Collection Incident: Zero

Running a business means Mike and Sue remain directly involved in packing and dispatching customer orders every single day. While occasional mistakes can happen, we always double-check our work and act quickly whenever something needs correcting. Consequently, our customers continue to receive the high standard of service they expect from Everything Dinosaur.

The incident also reminded us why teamwork matters so much. Mike may have been responsible for the mix-up, but Sue’s careful eye ensured that every parcel reached the correct courier.

“I thought I was being helpful. Unfortunately, I was helping the wrong courier! Thankfully, Sue spotted the mistake. It’s a timely reminder that no matter how experienced you are, it always pays to check your work.”

At Everything Dinosaur customer service is a serious matter. Nevertheless, we also believe it is important to laugh at ourselves from time to time. After all, behind every parcel is a real person doing their best.

Perhaps we should keep our new safety sign on permanent display. We have a feeling the counter might need resetting again one day…

A Beautiful Spinosaurus Illustration by a Young Palaeoartist

Our thanks to Caldey for sending into Everything Dinosaur her wonderful drawing of a theropod dinosaur.  It is the recently described Spinosaurus mirabilis and this colourful dinosaur is carefully making its way across a frozen lake.  It is a vibrant Spinosaurus mirabilis illustration.  The dinosaur is gazing intently at the frozen surface, perhaps it has detected the movement of a fish beneath the ice.

A Spinosaurus mirabilis Illustration

The striking blue and purple colouration contrasts markedly with the underside of the animal.  Large scales on the hand highlight the robust claws and we note that the young artist has also taken care to add prominent scutate scales to the digits of the foot.

The black-bordered band that slashes across the shoulders to the rear part of the animal’s sail contrasts with the rest of the dinosaur’s colour scheme and provides a sharp contradiction that draws the eye. In addition, we note the care and attention that has gone into painting the head, complete with its characteristic scimitar-like crest.

Our congratulations to Caldey, it is certainly an extremely dramatic and vivid depiction of this recently described spinosaurid.

A Second S. mirabilis Drawing

This is not the first Spinosaurus mirabilis illustration sent to us by Caldey.  Not long after the scientific paper describing this new African dinosaur was published, Caldey sent us a drawing of the head.  It is an intriguing interpretation, once again highlighting the artist’s creativity and attention to detail.

New Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mosasaurus Model in Stock

The new for 2026 Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mosasaurus model has arrived.  This marine reptile figure is now in stock at Everything Dinosaur. It is praised for its anatomical details such as a hypocercal tail and pterygoid teeth. In addition, the model has a forked tongue.

Safari Ltd have introduced an updated and more scientifically accurate Mosasaurus.  The model has no declared scale, but it does measure nearly twenty centimetres in length.  We are uncertain as to which species the model might represent.

Scientifically Accurate

The design team have taken great care to incorporate scientifically accurate details into this figure.  For example, there are pterygoid teeth in the roof of the mouth. Furthermore, the figure has a forked tongue. There are a pair of openings in the roof of the mouth. They hint at the presence of a Jacobson’s organ. It is a specialised sensory structure helping Mosasaurus to detect particles in water. This detail on the model, links it to the anatomy of modern snakes and lizards. Indeed, mosasaurs were squamates.

The figure has a hypocercal tail. An asymmetrical tail fin found in certain fish and marine reptiles where the spinal column or notochord extends into the lower lobe, making the bottom part larger or more pronounced than the upper part.

Remarkable Eoceras shaanxiense Fossils Rewrite Cephalopod Evolution

Researchers have identified tiny fossils from the Shuijingtuo Formation (Cambrian Stage 3) of South China that could transform our understanding of cephalopod evolution. The newly described species, Eoceras shaanxiense, provides the oldest known evidence of a primordial siphuncle, a crucial anatomical feature that enabled cephalopods to regulate buoyancy and eventually become some of the oceans’ most successful predators.

Measuring only a few millimetres in length, Eoceras shaanxiense possessed a straight (orthoconic) shell divided into a series of chambers. Researchers also identified a segmented tube running through these chambers. This structure is interpreted as an early form of the siphuncle seen in later cephalopods such as nautiloids and ammonites.

The Significance of Eoceras shaanxiense

The siphuncle is one of the defining characteristics of the Cephalopoda. Cephalopods are members of the Mollusca phylum and include extant animals such as squid, octopi, nautiloids and cuttlefish.

Extinct cephalopods include the extremely diverse ammonites and the belemnites which play important roles in the relative dating of rocks.  The siphuncle links the shell chambers. It allows gas and fluid to be regulated, enabling the animal to control its buoyancy. Combined with jet propulsion, this remarkable adaptation helped cephalopods leave the sea floor and adopt an active swimming lifestyle (nektonic). Until now, the evolutionary origin of this important feature had remained a mystery because of a substantial gap in the fossil record between molecular evidence and the earliest accepted cephalopod fossils. The discovery of Eoceras shaanxiense helps close that gap.

Documenting an Early Stage in the Evolution of a Chambered Shell

The research team concluded that the fossil documents an early stage in the evolution of the chambered shell, known as the phragmocone. As the animal grew, it formed new chambers while maintaining a connection with older ones through the segmented tube. This evolutionary innovation laid the foundations for the extraordinary success of cephalopods over the next 500 million years.

Commenting on the discovery, Mike from Everything Dinosaur said:

“Even the smallest fossils can have an enormous scientific impact. Eoceras shaanxiense provides an exciting glimpse into how one of nature’s most sophisticated marine adaptations first evolved.”

This important fossil demonstrates that the evolutionary history of cephalopods began earlier than previously recognised. Furthermore, it provides valuable new evidence explaining how these iconic marine invertebrates developed the buoyancy-control system that helped them dominate ancient seas for hundreds of millions of years.

Celebrating Peter Trusler Palaeoart – Bringing Ancient Oceans Back to Life

One of the highlights of reporting on new scientific discoveries is seeing the remarkable artwork that accompanies many research papers. While fossils provide the evidence, it often takes the skill of a talented palaeoartist to transform bones and impressions into vivid scenes from deep time. For example, we recently wrote about a remarkable ichthyosaur fossil discovery.  The scientific paper and the subsequent media release featured Peter Trusler palaeoart.

The research paper examined the fossil evidence for predator/prey interactions in the Eromanga Sea around a 100 million years ago. The paper was accompanied by stunning illustrations created by renowned Australian palaeoartist Peter Trusler. His artwork helped readers visualise an extraordinary moment from the Cretaceous, making this important discovery even more accessible to scientists and the public alike.

In addition to the images supplied showing the fossil excavation and research, the media release contained two behind-the-scenes photographs showing Peter at work as he prepared the artwork used in the publication. These images provide a rare glimpse into the creative process behind scientific illustration and demonstrate the incredible attention to detail required when reconstructing extinct animals.

Where Science Meets Art

Palaeoartists occupy a unique position between science and art. Every reconstruction begins with careful study of the available fossil evidence. Anatomical features, muscle placement, posture, skin texture and the surrounding environment all have to be considered. Scientific papers, discussions with researchers and comparisons with living animals help guide every stage of the reconstruction. However, there is much more involved than simply drawing prehistoric animals. Great palaeoart communicates scientific ideas visually. It enables readers to understand behaviour, ecology and anatomy in ways that photographs of fossils alone cannot achieve.

For this reason, many scientific papers rely upon skilled artists to illustrate newly described species or reconstruct remarkable prehistoric events.

Bringing an Ancient Ecosystem to Life

The recently published ichthyosaur study described compelling fossil evidence suggesting that a large Platypterygius (Platypterygius australis) had consumed a pterosaur shortly before it died.  The ichthyosaur subsequently was attacked by another predator. This remarkable discovery provides fresh insights into the diets of marine reptiles living more than 100 million years ago.

A New Lambeosaurine Dinosaur from Alberta

A new species of duck-billed dinosaur has been named.  It is a lambeosaurine and it has been named Plesiolophus warnerensis.  The researchers, writing in the “Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences”, conclude that at present it cannot be excluded as a potential ancestor to the iconic Parasaurolophus.

The discovery of Plesiolophus warnerensis is helping palaeontologists to better understand the early evolution of some of the most recognisable duck-billed dinosaurs. Researchers have described this newly named hadrosaur from southern Alberta, and it could represent one of the earliest known members of the lineage that eventually gave rise to the famous crested dinosaur Parasaurolophus.

The fossils were excavated from the Oldman Formation (Campanian) of Alberta, Canada. Although lambeosaurine hadrosaurs are abundant in the younger Dinosaur Park Formation, they are much rarer in the underlying Oldman Formation. As a result, Plesiolophus warnerensis provides valuable new information about an important stage in hadrosaur evolution.

The partial skull fossil was discovered by renowned fossil hunter Wendy Sloboda. Such is her reputation for finding fossils, Wendy has been invited to join field teams searching for dinosaur remains in Mongolia, Greenland, France and Argentina. She was honoured in 2015 with the naming of the centrosaurine Wendiceratops.

Part of the Skull Roof and Braincase

The fossil material consists of part of the skull roof and braincase from an adult animal. Despite being incomplete, the specimen preserves several distinctive anatomical features. These characteristics enabled the research team to identify it as a new genus and species. Furthermore, the skull exhibits features that firmly place Plesiolophus within the Parasaurolophini, the group that includes Parasaurolophus.

Interestingly, the skull also retains several ancestral features that had disappeared in later relatives. This unique combination of primitive and more advanced characteristics makes Plesiolophus warnerensis particularly significant. It provides a rare glimpse into an evolutionary transition that eventually led to the spectacular cranial crests seen in later lambeosaurine dinosaurs.

The image (above) shows a model of the iconic crested dinosaur Parasaurolophus. This Late Cretaceous, herbivorous dinosaur with its long head crest is one of the most recognisable of all the Dinosauria.  The Parasaurolophus model comes from the popular PNSO model range.

Plesiolophus warnerensis

To investigate its evolutionary relationships, the scientists compared Plesiolophus warnerensis with eighty-seven other dinosaur species. Their phylogenetic analysis consistently recovered the new taxon as one of the earliest members of the North American Parasaurolophini lineage.

The researchers noted that this newly described hadrosaur does not possess many unique features found only in this species. Consequently, they cannot rule out the possibility that it was close to the ancestry of Parasaurolophus, fossils of which occur in the younger Dinosaur Park Formation. While the available evidence does not allow the researchers to identify it as a direct ancestor, the discovery highlights an important chapter in the evolution of these remarkable duck-billed dinosaurs.

Commenting on the research, Mike from Everything Dinosaur explained:

“Discoveries such as Plesiolophus warnerensis help fill important gaps in the fossil record. Every new fossil provides another piece of the evolutionary puzzle, allowing scientists to build a clearer picture of how iconic dinosaurs such as Parasaurolophus evolved over millions of years.”

The discovery of Plesiolophus warnerensis also provides new insights into dinosaur communities that lived in Laramidia around 77 million years ago. As additional fossils are found, palaeontologists will continue to refine their understanding of how lambeosaurine dinosaurs diversified and evolved during the Late Cretaceous.
