PNSO Zhuchengtyrannus magnus “Lu Xiong”
The new for 2022 PNSO Zhuchengtyrannus dinosaur model is release number 58 in the PNSO prehistoric animal model range. The head is a fabulous sculpt of a classical Tyrannosaurinae skull. The skull is powerful and robust ideal to attack prey and with jaws capable of crushing bone. The PNSO Zhuchengtyrannus is depicted as an apex predator. The lacrimal horn is of the same superb standard as seen on other PNSO theropod models. William also praises the detailing associated with the mandibular fenestrae.

William points out that this figure has an articulated jaw and carefully sculpted teeth and praises the ear vents, commenting that this top predator had sensitive hearing capable of picking up the subtle rumble of low frequencies.
Forelimbs, Legs and Skin Tone
The reviewer states that the now familiar but carefully crafted PNSO shoulders, arms and two fingered hands of this figure are on a par with other PNSO carnivorous dinosaurs. The limbs are particularly robust and show some wonderful detail. The left foot is slightly raised giving the impression of slow but deliberate movement.
William compliments the design team at PNSO for the care and attention they have taken over the skin texture and scales.
He comments:
“From every fold and wrinkle and right down to his bull neck and well hefted bulk of the ribcage we havea Zhuchengtyrannus magnus in his full power of his youth and prime in perfect condition. For those with an extra eye for detail we have the perfect cloaca.”

The Colouration of the Model
William describes the colouration of the PNSO figure explaining that the skin tone moves from a beige cream to a yellow beige with an olive-green wash running from behind the eyes down the neck and shoulders across the thighs and towards the rear of the model. He points out that dark brown and tan stripes can be observed running the length of the tail. The anterior portion of the muzzle has black scales. The eyes are painted yellow with black pupils and the lacrimal crests are tinged with a hint of orange that “bring Lu Xiong to life”.
William also comments that the PNSO Zhuchengtyrannus is supplied with a clear plastic support stand, a full-colour booklet and a stunning poster showing the three recently proposed species of Tyrannosaurus (T. imperator, T. regina and Tyrannosaurus rex).
The new for 2022 PNSO Lu Xiong the Zhuchengtyrannus dinosaur model is supplied with colour posters, a 64-page information booklet and the packaging has a QR code that links to a short video that explains how the figure was developed.
William Provides Scientific Details
William provides model measurements and some details outlining the discovery of this iconic Asian tyrannosaur.
Scale: 1:32-1:38 (Campanian faunal stage of the Late Cretaceous) Length: 12 & 1/4 inches. Height: 4 & 1/2 inches.
In 2011 the holotype was found in Shandong province of eastern China. A nearly perfect right maxilla with left dentary and teeth.
William concludes his Zhuchengtyrannus review by stating that this model lives up to its specific name “great”.
He adds:
“Remember this, some of us have waited a long time to own a Tyrannosaurinae model. Now is your chance, given to us all by PNSO. Additionally, he will pair to perfection with the previous three PNSO Tyrannosaurinae models.”

Team members at Everything Dinosaur review the Rebor Saurophaganax maximus “Notorious Big” dinosaur model in the “volcanic cavern” colour scheme. In total, three colour variants of this Late Jurassic apex predator have been introduced by Rebor in 2022, “Badlands” was highlighted in an earlier (March 2022), blog post: Rebor Saurophaganax “Badlands” . This week, we posted up more pictures of the “jungle” colour variant: Rebor Saurophaganax “Jungle” and today, we conclude by focusing on the stunning, crimson “volcanic cavern” Saurophaganax dinosaur model.

Volcanic Ash and the Brushy Basin Member
The name of this brightly coloured, 1:35 scale dinosaur model has links with volcanism. Naming a Saurophaganax model “volcanic cavern” is highly appropriate and we congratulate Rebor for their choice of moniker. The holotype material collected by J. W. Stovall in 1931 and 1932 comes from a site in Cimarron County, Oklahoma (OMNH Quarry 1). The sediments represent the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation, one of the youngest geological units associated with the famous, highly fossiliferous Morrison Formation.
The upper portions of the Brushy Basin Member are dominated by layers of weathered volcanic ash. Altered volcanic ash is particularly abundant in the Brushy Basin Member of the upper part of the Morrison Formation. In one 110-metre-thick section in eastern Utah, 35 separate beds of volcanic ash were deposited over a period of 2.2 million years.

A characteristic of the Brushy Basin Member is the amount of bentonite present. This is a form of weathered ash that has become mixed with fine clay. It is extremely absorbent and tends to swell up as it absorbs moisture giving the ground a bubbly appearance resembling popcorn.
During the Late Jurassic, subduction of the North American tectonic plate led to the creation of a line of volcanoes along the western margins of North America. Periodically, these volcanoes would erupt and eject huge volumes of ash into the atmosphere. The ash clouds would drift eastwards and blanket the land further inland. Saurophaganax lived during this time of volcanic activity and these reptiles would have witnessed the volcanism and suffered the consequences as a result of the periodic eruptions that took place far to the west.

Dating the Strata from Zircons
These volcanic ash deposits yield, extremely resistant zircon crystals which can be used to precisely date the time of deposition by measuring the radiometric decay of isotopes within the igneous material (usually uranium to lead decay). Radiometric dating permits scientists to make an estimate of the age of the bedding planes and infer the age of the fossils that they contain. The presence of the weathered volcanic ash has assisted palaeontologists in working out the age of Brushy Basin component layers.

An Articulated Dinosaur Model
The Saurophaganax figure measures 41.5 cm long and it is articulated, with a flexible tail, moveable forelimbs and an articulated lower jaw so the model can be posed either mouth open or mouth closed. Of the three figures introduced, the “jungle” colouration is perhaps the most realistic colour scheme, after all, Saurophaganax fossils are associated with the famous Morrison Formation of the United States and these strata represent deposits laid down in a lush, verdant floodplain environment.

The Rebor Saurophaganax maximus dinosaur model has a declared scale of 1:35.
Conifers dominated the riparian* environment along with cycads, horsetails, tree ferns and ginkgo trees. As these tend to be predominately shades of green, a green coloured theropod would have been well camouflaged amongst the vegetation.

A riparian* environment is a terrestrial zone that lies between the land and a river or stream. It describes the ecosystem (plant habitats and animal communities) that inhabit river margins and the banks of streams. The Morrison Formation deposits were laid down in floodplains and riparian zones. Several theropod dinosaurs have been described from fossils found in these strata, Saurophaganax (S. maximus) is one of the largest described to date.

Recently, Rebor introduced three Saurophaganax scale models under the moniker “Notorious Big”. Today, we at Everything Dinosaur take a look at one of the three colour variants – the Rebor Saurophaganax maximus in the “Badlands” colour scheme.

The “Badlands” Variant
Saurophaganax is the official state fossil of Oklahoma, where the first fossils that were ascribed to this genus were found (although originally named Saurophagus maximus, until it was discovered the genus name was preoccupied). The validity of the genus remains controversial. Fossils assigned to S. maximus, could represent exceptionally large examples of Allosaurus.
The “Badlands” colour variant with its purple hues and glossy appearance is a bit of a misnomer, no fossils ascribed to Saurophaganax have been found in areas referred to as “Badlands”, its fossils, as far as we at Everything Dinosaur are aware, are confined to sedimentary deposits associated with the vast Morrison Formation.

The figure has articulated arms, a flexible tail and an articulated lower jaw. It has a declared scale of 1:35 the model measures around 41.5 cm long and has a head height of approximately 13 cm.
Saurophaganax was one of the largest, terrestrial predators of the Late Jurassic. Fossils are associated with Upper Kimmeridgian to Lower Tithonian aged deposits (155.7 to 145 million years ago). Several major dinosaur-fossil bearing geological formations have revealed that there were many contemporaneous large carnivorous theropods present in the ancient ecosystem. For example, Morrison Formation fossil material indicates the presence of Torvosaurus, Allosaurus, Saurophaganax, Ceratosaurus and Marshosaurus. The roughly contemporaneous Lourinhã Formation (Portugal) indicates a similar theropod biota – Lourinhanosaurus, Torvosaurus, Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus, plus possible megalosauroids and abelisaurids, although no material ascribed to the Saurophaganax genus has been found to date in Portugal.

Described by collectors as a beautifully detailed dinosaur model, the Rebor Saurophaganax maximus in the “Badlands” colour scheme is already proving to be a popular addition to the Rebor range of dinosaur models.

Team members at Everything Dinosaur have embarked on a project to embed short videos highlighting some of the prehistoric animal models that they sell into the award-winning company’s website. The aim of a video showcase is to help customers to make an informed purchase decision when choosing a figure.

The Schleich Styracosaurus Dinosaur Model
The Schleich Styracosaurus is one of five new for 2022 prehistoric animal releases recently announced by the German manufacturer. Everything Dinosaur has already posted up three short videos highlighting models, namely the Majungasaurus, the Parasaurolophus and the marine reptile figure – Nothosaurus.
The Schleich Styracosaurus video follows a similar format. The video lasts under forty-five seconds and shows the dinosaur model revolving on a turntable. Viewers get the chance to see the figure from various angles. Model measurements are given and a pronunciation guide is provided.

Testing Product Videos on Everything Dinosaur’s Beta Site
The spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur explained that the company was working with developers and technicians to perfect the look and positioning of the new video showcases on Everything Dinosaur’s beta site. When all tests and checks had been completed the plan is to introduce model videos on the company’s live site.
More short videos featuring dinosaurs were promised, including one for the new for 2022 Schleich Amargasaurus.

Connor the Torvosaurus Dinosaur Model
The PNSO Torvosaurus model came into stock at Everything Dinosaur last year. It is a replica of the Late Jurassic megalosaur, one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs described to date from this time in Earth’s history. Two species of Torvosaurus are regarded as valid T. tanneri from North America and T. gurneyi from Europe. However, just like the contemporaneous Allosaurus taxon, it is likely that more species of Torvosaurus will be named and described as existing fossil material is re-examined in conjunction with new fossil discoveries.

The latest product video to be posted up on the Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel features the recently introduced, new for 2022 Schleich Parasaurolophus dinosaur model. This figure is one of five new prehistoric animal figures announced so far by the German model manufacturer. The Parasaurolophus dinosaur model is the first Schleich figure to be given a product showcase video by Everything Dinosaur.

Model Measurements and Did this Dinosaur Live in China?
In the short video (it lasts around 45 seconds), viewers have the opportunity to observe the Parasaurolophus figure on a revolving turntable, model measurements are provided and a caption pops up explaining that this lambeosaurine is known from North America. A second caption follows shortly afterwards that indicates that this hadrosaur may have lived on two continents as very similar fossils to those associated with the Parasaurolophus genus have been found in Heilongjiang Province (China).

Although mainly associated with strata laid down during the Campanian faunal stage of the Late Cretaceous of North America, fossils from younger rocks (Maastrichtian stage) in north-eastern China suggest that Parasaurolophus may have lived in Asia and persisted until the very end of the Cretaceous.

Previous Parasaurolophus Models
Schleich has made replicas of Parasaurolophus before. One of the original figures in the long retired Schleich “Saurus” series was a green Parasaurolophus. Another Parasaurolophus figure was introduced by the German manufacturer in 2007.

The product video showcase is designed to highlight features and show more detail. Whilst images provided by the manufacturer and indeed photographs taken by Everything Dinosaur team members do help, a short video can give potential purchasers an excellent view of the prehistoric animal figure and help them to make a more informed purchase decision.
The Rebor Club Selection: Meta the Hatchling Deinosuchus (swamp variant) video showcase, lasts a little over 40 seconds. The total number of models made in this series is stated along with the replica’s measurements. The unique number on the base of the model is highlighted along with the Rebor packaging.
