William Reviews a Wonderful Mastodon Model

By |2024-10-14T11:59:41+01:00January 15th, 2022|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Our thanks to prehistoric animal model fan and collector William who sent into Everything Dinosaur his detailed review of the Safari Ltd Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mastodon figure. Here is William’s review of this prehistoric elephant model, which was first introduced in 2018.

Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mastodon model.

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mastodon model.

Mammut americanum – Sculpted by Doug Watson

As with most of his previous model reviews, William starts by commenting on the head. He states that the Mastodon has a lower, flatter skull than mammoths and extant elephants. He comments that the Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mastodon has well defined, dark orange eyes with black pupils and nicely sculpted eye lids. The model is shown with its mouth open, the tongue can be seen but there is no second set of tusks in the lower jaw as found in other types of ancient proboscidean. The ears are small and reflect theories on thermoregulation (heat dispersal and conservation) in these large-bodied mammals.

Details on the trunk are highlighted. The figure has its trunk raised, either to sniff the air or bellow a challenge to a rival. William praises the trunk commenting that in life it would have been used to pluck foliage and branches as well as having a role as a tactile, sensory organ. The reviewer states that living elephants have 40,000 muscles in their trunk and are capable of lifting over 700lbs. He speculates that Mastodons may have had stronger trunks.

William observes that the prominent tusks are of a natural ivory colour and held low. They model has flexible tusks with no sharp tips, so these protrusions do not represent a hazard and are unlikely to cause injury.

Reviewing the Body and the Coat of the Mastodon Figure

William explains that the short, robust and muscular build of Mammut americanum was unlikely to lead to confusion with coeval mammoth species. The American Mastodon was ideally suited to its temperate forest environment. He provides size estimates and concludes that bulls were much larger than cows, as seen in living elephant species.

When discussing the coat, William states that it “is one of the finest sculpted I have ever seen, only surpassed by Eofauna’s Steppe Mammoth figure.”

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mastodon is a marvel to touch and to hold thanks to the exquisite details of the model’s coat. He states that it is refreshing to see this as with mammoths’ hair colour would have varied between individuals and William speculates that perhaps, every once in a while, a genetic abnormality would permit an albino variant to be born.

Strong Legs

William praises the strong legs and highlights the detailing such as the toenails. He comments that these large animals would have traversed temperate woodlands and conifer forests, eating a wide variety of plant material in order to satisfy their huge appetites. He completes his model review by stating that the model has a rich auburn colour with a dark wash that has been skilfully applied to highlight the skin folds and the muscles under the skin.

American Mastodon Fact File

To conclude his review of the model, William provided some additional information regarding this species, commenting that in 1705 in the New York village of Claverack a Dutch settler whilst out working dug up a large tooth, the first of many found over next two centuries. William briefly outlines the evolutionary history of the prehistoric elephant lineage and explained that it was the French naturalist Georges Cuvier who erected the genus.

William explained that these elephants ranged from Alaska/Canada in the north down to central Mexico, but there is no fossil evidence of these animals ever having reached South America. Most scientists believe that the last of the Mastodons perished along with much of the American megafauna around 10,000 years ago, although these huge herbivores may has survived until as recently as 4,000 years ago, in isolated pockets.

He states that the Wild Safari Prehistoric World American Mastodon is a great addition to his model collection and he adds that he received the figure with a fast despatch and delivery from Everything Dinosaur. It arrived in 100% perfect condition. William also praised the customer service of Everything Dinosaur.

The New Rebor Smilodon populator Stray Cat (Plain)

By |2024-10-11T08:31:47+01:00January 9th, 2022|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Team members at Everything Dinosaur have posted up some pictures of the recently introduced Rebor Smilodon populator Stray Cat (plain colour variant). The figure has a declared scale of 1:11 and the Smilodon is the first prehistoric mammal model to be added to the Rebor range. Previously, the only mammal figure in the range was the 1/11th scale figure of a Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei).

Two Interchangeable Smilodon Heads

This beautiful model is supplied with two interchangeable heads so the Smilodon can be displayed with either mouth open or mouth closed. The head fits securely into the neck of the body and it is difficult to discern a join. The clever design team at Rebor came up with this idea as it permits them to avoid having an unsightly joint on the figure associated with an articulated lower jaw.

Smilodon populator

Several species of “knife-tooth” have been named and described. S. populator is regarded as the largest. Some individuals had massive upper canine teeth around 28 cm in length. This robust and powerful predator roamed the southern portions of the Americas. It would have dwarfed the Sabre-Toothed Cats of the United States and was one of the largest felids to have ever lived, with a shoulder height of approximately 1.2 metres.

The Amazing Rebor Smilodon populator Stray Cat (Ice Age)

By |2024-10-10T05:59:32+01:00December 27th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Team members at Everything Dinosaur have taken some photographs of the impressive Rebor Smilodon populator Stray Cat model in the Ice Age colour scheme. The figure is a colour variant on the Rebor Smilodon “plain” replica. The colouration would provide excellent camouflage for a predator in a snowy landscape, although there is very little fossil evidence to indicate whether Smilodon populator inhabited mountainous areas where snow might have fallen on a regular basis.

Two Heads are Better than One

The Rebor Smilodon figures are supplied with two heads. One head depicts the mouth open, the other shows the mouth closed. The heads can be securely fixed into the body by a large peg on the back of the head. This peg fits into a socket in the neck and it cannot be seen (as demonstrated in the pictures on this post). The heads are interchangeable so collectors can display their figure with its mouth open or closed. How they choose to display the model is entirely a matter of personal choice. The use of interchangeable heads prevents the need for an articulated lower jaw, the large and obvious joint would have spoiled the look of this most impressive prehistoric cat model.

Rebor Smilodon populator Model Measurements

Both the Rebor Smilodon populator Stray Cat models (plain and Ice Age colour variants) measure approximately 26.5 cm in length. The figures stand around 13.5 cm tall and the declared scale is 1:11. Since these figures arrived at Everything Dinosaur, they have received excellent reviews from model fans and collectors. The detail on these figures is extremely impressive, Rebor are to be congratulated for producing such beautiful Smilodon models.

The New for 2022 CollectA Triceratops Video Review

By |2024-10-09T22:24:54+01:00December 26th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur has published regular updates on the company’s YouTube channel keeping dinosaur fans and model collectors informed about the new for 2022 CollectA prehistoric animal models. Our blog post today features the fourth and final video in this sort series. We provide a video review of the new, 1:40 scale CollectA Triceratops horridus model.

Video credit: Everything Dinosaur

The CollectA Deluxe 1:40 Scale Triceratops horridus

Triceratops might be one of the most recognisable of all the dinosaurs, but scientists have learned a great deal about “three-horned face” over the last decade or so and the new for 2022 CollectA Triceratops (T. horridus) dinosaur model reflects some of the latest scientific thinking.

CollectA Deluxe Triceratops horridus

The new for 2022 CollectA Deluxe Triceratops dinosaur model.

The Shape of the Skull and Neck Frill

The CollectA model has been based on “Horridus”, an almost complete Triceratops horridus specimen excavated from Hell Creek Formation deposits exposed in Montana. This superbly preserved Triceratops skeleton has the most complete skull and neck frill of any Triceratops specimen described to date. It is more than 99% complete. The design team at CollectA have been able to use this skeleton to accurately depict the head and the neck frill on their dinosaur model.

Almost a Complete Tail

In total, around 87% of the entire skeleton of a single, individual animal has been recovered, including much of the tail apart from a few posterior caudal vertebrae. This has permitted palaeontologists to reconstruct the tail of this horned dinosaur. Its length, depth and relative proportions in relation to the rest of the body are reproduced in the new CollectA Triceratops figure.

PNSO to Add an Iguanodon Model to Their Remarkable Range of Figures

By |2024-10-09T16:21:40+01:00December 19th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

PNSO will introduce a replica of an Iguanodon into their prehistoric animal model range in 2022. Harvey the Iguanodon will be in stock at Everything Dinosaur, one of several new figures that PNSO will be adding to their portfolio in the coming months. For example, one of our earlier blog posts introduced the new version of Doyle the Triceratops, another ornithischian added to this exciting product range.

PNSO Harvey the Iguanodon dinosaur model

The PNSO Iguanodon dinosaur model.

Iguanodon bernissartensis

Named and described in 1825, only the second dinosaur to be scientifically described “iguana tooth” has had a troubled taxonomic history, with numerous revisions and changes. For example, the holotype for the species I. bernissartensis has changed. The holotype is the single, physical specimen which acts as the blueprint for all other fossil samples to be compared against. The original holotype consisted of the isolated teeth and partial remains identified by Gideon Mantell. The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) ruled that the type species be changed to the I. bernissartensis with the new holotype IRSNB 1534, a much more complete specimen which was part of a treasure trove of Iguanodon fossils discovered in a coal mine in Belgium in 1878 and studied by the famous Belgian palaeontologist Louis Dollo.

PNSO have added a model of an Iguanodon to their mid-size model range.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“It is wonderful to see this famous Lower Cretaceous ornithopod added to the PNSO model range. The figure will have an official, declared scale of 1:35 and we are looking forward to stocking this excellent dinosaur in early 2022.”

The Model Measurements

Harvey the Iguanodon model has a declared scale of 1:35. The model measures 27 cm in length and stands around 9.5 cm high at the hip. The acclaimed dinosaur expert and best-selling author Gregory S. Paul has stated that Iguanodon bernissartensis had a maximum length of approximately 8 metres. Based on this size estimate, the 27 cm long model would be in around 1:29.5 scale.

Beasts of the Mesozoic Wendiceratops

By |2024-09-15T20:41:56+01:00December 11th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

In the Northern Hemisphere it might be cold and dark as we approach the depths of winter, but here are some pictures of the colourful Beasts of the Mesozoic Wendiceratops to brighten your day. The bright and cheery Wendiceratops model (W. pinhornensis), was part of the second wave of horned dinosaurs to be introduced in this series. The Beasts of the Mesozoic ceratopsians are all very colourful, the Wendiceratops, a replica of a Late Cretaceous, Canadian centrosaurine is one of the most spectacular and flamboyant models in the entire range.

Colourful Packaging Too

Even the box the figure comes in is beautifully presented with stunning artwork and the packaging incorporates some facts about this large, horned dinosaur that was scientifically described in 2015 (Evans and Ryan).

Wendiceratops pinhornensis Model Measurements

The Beasts of the Mesozoic Wendiceratops pinhornensis is a fantastic 1:18 scale articulated model. Palaeontologist and author Gregory S. Paul estimates that this centrosaurine measured around 4.5 metres in length and weighed 1,500 kilograms. The Everything Dinosaur fact sheet on this dinosaur, which is sent out with sales of the figure concurs.

The model itself measures a generous 30.5 cm long, from the end of the tail to the tip of the dinosaur’s broad snout.

Described as a basal member of the Centrosaurinae subfamily, Wendiceratops roamed Alberta approximately 79 million years ago. Its fossils come from the Oldman Formation and a taxonomic assessment places Wendiceratops as a sister taxon to the geologically younger Sinoceratops (S. zhuchengensis) from the Shandong Province of eastern China.

Everything Dinosaur Reviews the New CollectA Edmontosaurus Model

By |2024-09-15T19:09:51+01:00December 4th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur team members have produced a video review of the recently announced new for 2022 CollectA Deluxe Edmontosaurus model. In our brief video, posted up on the Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel, the narrator looks at the model and outlines the research that has led to the features seen on this figure, such as the soft tissue head crest and the prominent hoof on the third finger of the hand.

Video credit: Everything Dinosaur

The Third Video in a Series of Four

The YouTube video, which lasts a little over 12 minutes, introduces the new figure and examines some of the latest research into the Edmontosaurus genus. It is the third video in a series of four. Team members producing a video every few days highlighting the new model announcements made by CollectA throughout the month of November.

CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Edmontosaurus dinosaur model

The new for 2022 CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Edmontosaurus dinosaur model. CollectA had wanted to introduce a replica of this iconic Late Cretaceous hadrosaur for some time.

Mummified Dinosaurs

The video looks at the remarkable research into one specific dinosaur specimen. A mummified Edmontosaurus specimen nicknamed “Dakota”. The narrator explains how “dinosaur mummies” are formed and looks at the particular circumstances that led to the remarkable preservation of the “Dakota” specimen, the fossilised remains of an Edmontosaurus annectens, that were found in North Dakota, hence the specimen’s nickname.

The fossil specimen “Dakota” is on display at the North Dakota Heritage Centre and State Museum and research into this remarkable fossil is on-going.

The Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel is jam-packed with videos reviewing prehistoric animal figures, updates on the latest fossil finds, book reviews and hints and tips about model collecting. Subscribe to Everything Dinosaur on YouTube: Subscribe to Everything Dinosaur on YouTube.

Edmontosaurus Video – Question of the Day

The design team at CollectA had been wanting to create a model of this Late Cretaceous ornithischian dinosaur for some time. In our video, we look at the reason why the model has been given dark stripes on its flank and tail. We look at the fossil evidence for a soft crest and examine recent photographs that reveal that Edmontosaurus had an enlarged, weight-bearing third finger with a hoof-like nail. The narrator explains why the neck scales on the new for 2022 CollectA Edmontosaurus look very different from the scales seen on the rest of the dinosaur figure and accurate model measurements are provided.

Visit Everything Dinosaur: Everything Dinosaur.

CollectA Deluxe Edmontosaurus

As part of our planned engagement with our customers and fans of the Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel we like to ask a question in our CollectA videos. For example, at the moment, there is a Deluxe Parasaurolophus in the CollectA 1:40 scale range, this is to be joined next year by the 1:40 scale Edmontosaurus, which brings us to this query – what other Late Cretaceous duck-billed dinosaur would you like CollectA to add to their CollectA Deluxe series?

We pass on feedback to our chums at CollectA.

The New PNSO “Logan” Nanotyrannus is Reviewed

By |2024-05-11T23:06:48+01:00November 29th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

The recently introduced PNSO Logan the Nanotyrannus dinosaur figure has divided model collectors and dinosaur fans. Is Nanotyrannus lancensis a valid species or do the fossils assigned to this theropod represent juvenile examples of Tyrannosaurus rex?

PNSO Nanotyrannus dinosaur model.
The new for 2021 PNSO Nanotyrannus dinosaur model. Is Nanotyrannus lancensis a valid species?

The consensus view amongst most palaeontologists seems to favour the latter interpretation, that Nanotyrannus is not a valid genus and that the fossil specimens represent juvenile tyrannosaurs but what about the actual Nanotyrannus model itself? One Everything Dinosaur customer, William offers an opinion.

PNSO “Logan” the Nanotyrannus

Logan is a fantastic little guy and whichever camp you are in he’s a perfect example of a top-of-the-line Nanotyrannus lancensis or medium-sized juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex figure. You decide what he is to be in your collection.”

The reviewer praised the detail on the head commenting on the articulated lower jaw and complimented the shape of the skull that provides an accurate reflection of the fossil record.

Tongue placement was highlighted and its position towards the rear of the mouth commented upon and the finely crafted lacrimal crests earned the reviewer’s approval.

PNSO Nanotyrannus dinosaur model with an articulated jaw.
Like most of the other mid-size PNSO theropod figures, Logan the Nanotyrannus has an articulated lower jaw.

Visit the Everything Dinosaur website: Everything Dinosaur.

Longer Forelimbs Reminiscent of Allosaurids

Scientists are aware that the body shape of Late Cretaceous tyrannosaurs changed radically as they grew. The limbs were proportionately longer and the longer forelimbs of this PNSO figure reminded the reviewer of the limbs of allosaurids. The limb shape contrasts nicely with PNSO T. rex figures, Andrea the female T. rex for example.

William commented upon the well-sculpted legs and feet and described juvenile tyrannosaurs/Nanotyrannus as “like Cretaceous wolverines”.

The packaging was described as “superb” and the box containing the Nanotyrannus figure includes a detailed illustrated booklet and a clear, plastic support stand for the model.

The new PNSO mid-size range Nanotyrannus is supplied with a clear support stand.

When discussing the colour scheme chosen for this theropod, the reviewer stated that the dinosaur model had been painted in a rich, warm beige, with chocolate brown patches. The painting around the eyes was highlighted and the dark stripes on the flanks praised.

As with previous model reviews, William summarised the figure’s vital statistics.

Model Dimensions

Length: 6.5 inches.

Height: 2.5 inches.

Scale: 1:30.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, William stated:

“The wee guy is a must for your collection be he a dwarf tyrant or a tyrant lizard king. Add him and you will see for yourself, he may be wee, but he is mighty!”

William Reviews the New PNSO “Andrea” Female T. rex

By |2024-08-26T17:50:52+01:00November 25th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Dinosaur fan and model enthusiast William sent into Everything Dinosaur his review of the PNSO Andrea the female T. rex figure. William has been avidly collecting PNSO prehistoric animal models and figures for a while now. He was delighted when “Wilson” a new version of Tyrannosaurus rex was introduced recently and has been able to acquire the “Andrea” female T. rex figure so that the male and his mate can be together.

PNSO Andrea the female T. rex dinosaur model in lateral view
Although the position of the hind legs in this resting pose is controversial it is great to see a manufacturer introduce a figure of a theropod dinosaur in a prone, resting position. The reviewer praised the position of the front limbs and commented on the detailed musculature hinted at by the skin folds.

PNSO Female T. rex Model Review

William started his review by praising PNSO for all the wonderful figures that they have introduced this year and he was looking forward to seeing what marvels the company would launch in 2022.

The head sculpt is highlighted for its detail. William commented that the artist Zhao Chuang did his research into whether this theropod had lips, explaining that osteological research has identified large facial scales present beyond the margin of the upper mandible and therefore no lips have been added to this figure. The fully articulated jaw is well designed and the lower jaw fits into the upper jaw exactly. As the dinosaur is in a resting pose, to display it with the jaws open, the model’s head must be positioned over the edge of a shelf or slightly raised.

The eyes are placed correctly to indicate stereoscopic/binocular version and the sclera is coloured a dark yellow/reddish hue with a black pupil. William stated that the eyesight of this apex predator was believed to be particularly acute T. rex could pick out prey even when the intended victim was hidden in cover.

PNSO Andrea the female T. rex dinosaur model has an articulated lower jaw.

In Praise of the Skin and Texture

The painstaking care taken to get the skin texture on the head so detailed is highlighted by the reviewer.

He comments that:

“The lacrimal crests are on the money and converge onto the nasal crest. No shrink wrapping on his antorbital fenestrae and orbits.”

The robust teeth are impressive and the mouth has been painted correctly in a rich, wet pink to give a natural look and William stated that if this dinosaur lost a tooth, then a replacement would erupt from the jaw. Tongue placement was accurate with a nasal opening in the roof of the palate also observed. William praised PNSO for these additional highlights.

The stocky body shape was commented upon in William’s review, both the male PNSO T. rex figure “Wilson” and his partner are regarded as having “ample heft”, the arms and figures of Andrea were praised. The shoulder muscles hidden under the skin folds were discussed and the muscles depicted in the tiny arms highlighted. William commented that the arms held close to the body gave the figure a natural resting pose.

PNSO Andrea the female T. rex in dorsal view.
PNSO Andrea the T. rex measures 19.7 cm long, accounting for the curve of the tail. The model is 13.8 cm wide and it has a stated scale of 1:35. The reviewer preferred to give the model’s measurements in imperial units.

Model Supplied with a Beautifully Illustrated Book

As befits a replica from PNSO with the talented palaeoartist Zhao Chuang on their team, this T. rex model comes with a beautifully illustrated book. The narrator comments on the position of the hind legs the presence of a cloaca and comments that this meat-eater looks poised ready to rise from her slumbers adding:

“Andrea’s powerful leg muscles are outstanding we can imagine her rising straight up in heartbeat to defend or feed.”

William explained that this figure is supplied in a superb white box, there is no need for a support stand for this dinosaur model, the prone position of the model is perfectly stable.

Comments on the Colour

The female T. rex has a much darker face with rich hues consisting of blacks and charcoals from the tip of the snout running along the upper jaw line rising upwards around the eyes with a column of black reaching up to fuse with the darkened crown of the skull. The reviewer comments that the chosen colour scheme “sets the head sculpt off to perfection”.

Model Dimensions

William states that the PNSO “Andrea” the female T. rex measures:

  • Length 12 inches
  • Height 2.75 inches

He concludes his review by stating:

“Andrea is worth adding to your collection! She is a true Tyrant Queen and accurate rexes come but once in one’s life.”

Our thanks to William for sending into Everything Dinosaur his review.
