ITOY Studio Dilophosaurus A New Review

By |2024-05-19T08:08:37+01:00February 15th, 2021|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|Tags: |0 Comments

Our thanks to “Jurassic James” for sending into Everything Dinosaur his review of the ITOY Studio Dilophosaurus dinosaur model.

James placed his review on the Everything Dinosaur website here is his dinosaur model review.

“This is one model I was torn with whether to buy or not. It was a split decision between this or the Rebor versions. I am so glad I opted for this version I’m sure the Rebor is great too but I just think this model has better detail for the scale it is in. That having been said I haven’t got the Rebor figure so maybe their models are just as good.”

He went onto add:

“I personally like models that are similar to “Jurassic Park/Jurassic World”. This model to me is based on the colouring we see on the dinosaur from the original “Jurassic Park” movie but with some differences. For instance, the deep red head frills, so maybe it is a different variant, a male or a mature female as the one in the film was supposed to be a juvenile. I also have the green T. rex by ITOY Studio and found mine to be better than the promotional images colour wise having more yellow shades as it looked bright green on the promotional images but I find this gave more character and detail.”

The ITOY Studio Dilophosaurus.

A Highly Detailed Display Base

Commenting on the base, James went onto say:

“The base that comes with this figure is of the highest quality something else that attracted me to it. The only slight issue I have with mine is there are two small metal rods that line up with the dinos feet and mine will only line up with one at a time. This in no way effects the balance of the dinosaur and it also balances perfectly without the base. I do think the pose works well with the base though as it looks as if the animal is looking out for danger before taking a drink.

Thank you once again to Everything Dinosaur for a swift and excellent service.”

How to Position the Dilophosaurus on its Base

We noted the comment about placing this model onto its display base, so a team member from Everything Dinosaur explained how to position the ITOY Studio Dilophosaurus on its base. Check the holes in the base of the feet are clear of any obstruction, then place the front foot in position first. When this foot is in position, carefully wiggle the rear of the model and gently ease the back foot into place on the second metal rod.

A note to model collectors, the rods are supposed to be bent, these add extra security helping to stabilise the figure.

Beasts of the Mesozoic Zuniceratops Dinosaur Model

By |2024-05-18T22:14:02+01:00February 8th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Beasts of the Mesozoic Zuniceratops Dinosaur Model

One of the first wave of horned dinosaur figures to be introduced under the Beasts of the Mesozoic banner, Zuniceratops is one of those dinosaur models that since its introduction it has helped inform and educate model collectors about the huge diversity now associated with the Ceratopsia.  Models of this Late Cretaceous horned dinosaur are few and far between and the inclusion of this figure, a replica of a member of the Ceratopsidae which was about the size of a cow, helped broaden the understanding of dinosaur fans and model collectors.

Zuniceratops represents a “transitional form”, a dinosaur with a combination of primitive traits and more derived characteristics.  Roaming around the southern United States approximately 90 million years ago (Turonian faunal stage), it is one of just a handful of dinosaurs known to science from this time, some twenty-four million years prior to the evolution of more famous horned dinosaurs such as Triceratops.

Zuni Horned Face

Measuring a fraction under 22 cm in length, this is one of the smallest of the horned dinosaurs in the Beasts of the Mesozoic series.  In order for it to be given the standard scale for this range (1/18th scale), a small replica was required as this dinosaur measured around three metres long and weighed approximately 200 kilograms, making it considerably smaller and lighter than its much more famous horned dinosaur distant relatives such as Styracosaurus, Triceratops and Pachyrhinosaurus.  The figure might measure just under 22 cm long but it does have 19 points of articulation crammed into its small but sturdy frame.

The Beasts of the Mesozoic Zuniceratops christopheri dinosaur model.  Despite its formidable appearance, Zuniceratops was actually quite small for a member of the North American ceratopsids.

A Fantastic Paint Scheme

The colours chosen for this articulated dinosaur model are certainly bold and striking.  The body shows signs of counter shading which then give way to contrasting orange flashes which blend with the deep blue to be found at the top of the front legs, around the eyes and framing the long neck shield.   The two brow horns are beautifully painted.  These horns may have played a role in visual communication or as defensive weapons to deter the advances of theropod predators.  Ironically, as far as Everything Dinosaur team members know, there have been no large carnivorous dinosaurs from the Moreno Hill Formation of New Mexico formally described.  Fossils of Zuniceratops are associated with this geological formation and nowhere else.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Because it represents one of the smaller Late Cretaceous ceratopsians from North America, this Beasts of the Mesozoic figure is a little smaller than the rest of the first wave of these dinosaur models.  We have subsequently priced it a little cheaper so it has become the ideal entry point for model collectors who wish to familiarise themselves with this exciting dinosaur model series.”

Rare Prehistoric Shark Models Resurface

Safari Ltd Prehistoric Sharks Toob Back in Stock

Originally launched in 2011 but then retired in 2017, Everything Dinosaur is delighted to announce that team members have been able to secure a limited stock of the rare Safari Ltd prehistoric sharks toob.  This exciting set of ten prehistoric shark figures is now back in stock at the UK-based specialist prehistoric animal model and dinosaur replica company.

The Safari Ltd Prehistoric Sharks Toob is Back in Stock at Everything Dinosaur

The Safari Ltd prehistoric sharks toob.

The Safari Ltd prehistoric sharks toob.  A set of ten different prehistoric shark models demonstrating the diversity of the shark family through deep time.

The Ultimate Marine Predator

Sharks have been around for more than 400 million years.  Sharks are part of the Chondrichthyes, the fish with cartilaginous skeletons.  There is some evidence to indicate that the first sharks evolved in the Late Ordovician geological period around 450 million years ago, but many palaeontologists consider that this subclass of the Chondrichthyes (the Elasmobranchii), first appeared in marine environments during the Silurian.

The Safari Ltd prehistoric sharks toob celebrates the diversity of these highly successful marine vertebrates.  Each of the ten different models represents an important shark genus from the fossil record ranging from the Late Devonian to the very end of the Mesozoic and possibly into the early Cenozoic too.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“When first introduced ten years ago the Safari Ltd prehistoric sharks toob proved very popular with model makers re-creating ancient marine environments.  These shark replicas were very useful when creating prehistoric underwater scenes.  If the scene featured a Dunkleosteus for example, then one of the Safari Ltd prehistoric sharks figures could be added to help give the diorama more authenticity.  If the underwater scene focused on a pliosaur or perhaps a mosasaur, then other figures from this set representing sharks which were contemporaneous could be added.”

ITOY Studio Resurrection Dilophosaurus

The ITOY Studio Resurrection Dilophosaurus dinosaur model has certainly caused a stir with prehistoric animal fans and dinosaur model collectors since its arrival at Everything Dinosaur.  This beautiful replica, depicting what is now believed to have been one of the largest terrestrial carnivores on the planet during the Early Jurassic.  It ticks all the boxes when it comes to dinosaur replicas, with its innovative colouration, stability and stunning detail.

ITOY Studio Resurrection Dilophosaurus and Revising Dilophosaurus

A recent revision of Dilophosaurus fossil material (D. wetherilli) revealed that the lower jaw (dentary), was more robust than previously realised and it has been suggested that this dinosaur was a much more formidable predator, a terror of the contemporary Sarahsaurus, a member of the Sauropodomorpha.  The large crests on the ITOY figure reflect the latest thinking in terms of the crest size and the design team have given their figure crimson head crests, possibly a nod towards the idea that these crests were primarily used for display.  The inside of the mouth is particularly well painted.  The Dilophosaurus has an articulated jaw, so the figure can be posed with mouth closed, mouth open or indeed somewhere in between.

Model Measurements

The Model measures a fraction over twenty centimetres in length.  The head is some seven and a half centimetres off the ground.  Naturally, when placed on its display base the figure appears a little taller.  Team members at Everything Dinosaur have enjoyed taking photographs and videos of this replica.  There are plans to make a more detailed video in the future showcasing this model and revealing just how securely this dinosaur stands on its base.

The New ITOY Studio Paraceratherium Product Testing

By |2024-06-10T10:48:15+01:00December 31st, 2020|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

ITOY Studio Paraceratherium Product Testing

Everything Dinosaur promised the company’s Facebook, Twitter and other social media fans/followers an update on the amazing ITOY Studio Paraceratherium figure before the end of the year (2020).  True to our word, we have posted up a short video on the Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel.  In the video, the narrator explains about product testing for these prehistoric animal replicas and if all goes to plan, the Paraceratherium models will be in stock at Everything Dinosaur early in 2021.

ITOY Studio Paraceratherium Product Testing

A Quick YouTube Paraceratherium Preview

Before Everything Dinosaur can bring the ITOY Studio Paraceratherium models into stock, the figures have to pass product safety tests, but this doesn’t stop us giving you a quick preview of the Paraceratherium.  In the video we showcase both variants:

  • ITOY Studio Paraceratherium – Deluxe (model supplied with polystone display base)
  • ITOY Studio Paraceratherium – Elite (model supplied without polystone display base)

For prehistoric animal models and figures: Prehistoric Animal Models and Figures.

What a fantastic model it is!  The detail on the figure is simply amazing!  It is incredibly life-life with beautiful skin folds and creases.  It is big too, the model measures over 40 cm long and the display base is a generous 32 cm in length and over 14 cm wide.

Works with 1:20 Scale Replicas

Although no scale is declared for this figure, based on an adult Paraceratherium being around 8 metres in length with a height at the withers (just behind the shoulders), of 4.5 metres, Everything Dinosaur team members estimate that this replica is in approximately 1:20 scale.  So, it will work well with lots of other prehistoric mammal models, which are in the same or similar scale such as Mastodons, Mammoths, Sabre-toothed cats and Hyaenodonts.

Once Product Testing Has Been Completed Everything Dinosaur Intends to Bring this Figure into Stock

Paraceratherium Model Product Testing

As the authorised European importers of the ITOY Studio range, Everything Dinosaur has commissioned product safety tests with the highly respected Eurofins (independent testing company).  Once these tests have been completed and the ITOY Studio figures certified, Everything Dinosaur intends to bring these spectacular models into stock.

A spokesperson for Everything Dinosaur stated that they hoped that the test results would be available in a few days, once certified, the Paraceratherium figures would be available early in 2021.

Customising Caiuajara Creating a Unique Figure

Customising Caiuajara dobruskii

Our thanks to model collector Elizabeth who sent into Everything Dinosaur a superb selection of photographs of her customised CollectA Deluxe Caiuajara flying reptile figures.  CollectA have introduced several large pterosaur figures in recent years, the Caiuajara (C. dobruskii) model was introduced in 2019, following the earlier introduction of a Dimorphodon (2017) and a Guidraco figure in 2015.  These large figures provide plenty of scope for modellers to add their own slant when it comes to depicting these long extinct archosaurs.

The flying reptile figures have been given custom make-overs by the extremely talented Ben Van Steenberge and Martin Garratt, what fantastic efforts too.

Caiuajara dobruskii

This large crested tapejarid, fossils of which herald from southern Brazil, was formally described back in 2014 (P. Manzig et al).  To read an article about the discovery of Caiuajara: New Species of Flying Reptile Identified from Pterosaur Graveyard.

Although the dating of the strata in which the pterosaur fossils were found has proved controversial, several palaeontologists estimate that this flying reptile with its 2-3 metre wingspan was flying over southern Brazil between 93 to 75 million years ago (Turonian to Campanian faunal stages of the Cretaceous).

Leaving feedback on the CollectA Deluxe Caiuajara figure on Everything Dinosaur’s website, Elizabeth commented:

“The CollectA Supreme line is a dream for lovers of pterosaurs.  I have leapt to buy each one!  This is a particularly striking creature with its massive crest.  I like the way that CollectA chose to paint it brightly to indicate a display feature to other Caiuajara.  The model is large and well made – an asset to any collection.”

CollectA New for 2021 Models (Part 3) Video

Having posted up information about the latest batch of new for 2021 prehistoric animal models to be introduced by CollectA, team members put together a video review for Everything Dinosaur’s YouTube channel.  The video review provides information about the new Age of Dinosaurs Popular Elasmosaurus, discusses the famous mistake made by the American palaeontologist Edward Drinker Cope and looks at the scientific evidence for giving this huge plesiosaur a tail fin (fluke).

CollectA Deluxe 1:40 Scale Xiphactinus Model

The YouTube video review lasts about thirteen and a half minutes and provides a comprehensive review of the new CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Xiphactinus, a contemporary of Elasmosaurus.  However, team members stress that this prehistoric fish was much more widely distributed and it was not limited to the Western Interior Seaway.

The New Set of CollectA Mini Prehistoric Animal Models

As well as providing information on fossils relating to Xiphactinus and Elasmosaurus, the new for 2021 set of mini prehistoric animal models is also discussed.  This set will feature ten figures, nine of which are entirely new sculpts.  These models are great for use in prehistoric landscapes or dinosaur dioramas where they can represent juveniles or sub-adults.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We aim to educate and inform with our CollectA model reviews.  Our intention is to provide some of the scientific information that is reflected in the figures.  For example, we examine amazing fossils showing the preserved remains of a victim entombed within the stomach cavity of a Xiphactinus audax specimen.  We discuss elasmosaurids and we provide pictures of plesiosaur tail bones that might indicate the presence of a tail fluke.  We have one more video to produce about new CollectA models for next year.  This video will be posted up on our YouTube channel next week.”

The New Papo Megaloceros Model

By |2024-03-05T07:34:59+00:00November 21st, 2020|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases, Product Reviews|0 Comments

The Magnificent Papo Megaloceros Model

The magnificent Papo Megaloceros model is now in stock at Everything Dinosaur.  This year (2020), has been exceptionally challenging for many companies due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.  Factory production has been severely affected and logistic operations, so reliable under normal conditions have been under severe strain.  As a result, team members at Everything Dinosaur have found themselves announcing new for 2021 figures, when some of the new for 2020 models had yet to arrive.  Take for example, the Papo Megaloceros, it had been originally scheduled to come out in May, but it has been worth the wait.

Papo Megaloceros Model

Although this giant deer is often referred to as the “Irish Elk”, this most impressive member of the Cervidae, was not restricted to Ireland.  The “Emerald Isle” marked the western edge of its distribution, during the Pleistocene Epoch and into the Holocene these large herbivores could be found as far east as Siberia.  Megaloceros is not closely related to the elk family either, genetic studies have revealed that the Megaloceros genus is related to the Fallow deer (Dama dama).  The term “Irish Elk” seems to have become popularised from the 18th century onwards.

Numerous specimens found in peat bogs close to Dublin (Ireland), provided museums and private collectors in Europe with a wealth of material to use in displays and the term seems to have originated as a result of these remains being widely seen by the Victorian public.

Model Measurements

The Papo Megaloceros figure is around 13 centimetres tall, with a shoulder height of 6 cm.  Those most impressive antlers have a span of over 11 centimetres.  Based on a 2.7 metre long adult animal, Everything Dinosaur team members estimate that this figure is in approximately 1/18th scale, so the Papo Megaloceros model will work well in dioramas using other prehistoric mammal models that are in 1/20th scale.

The huge antlers were shed and regrown by the bucks each year.  They may look extremely cumbersome, but given the size of the animal these palmate antlers are actually in proportion.

Papo in Perspective – Video Review

Everything Dinosaur has worked with the French model and figure manufacturer Papo for many years.  In the UK-based company’s latest YouTube video, Everything Dinosaur, as one of the largest retailers of Papo prehistoric animal models, looks at the recently released Papo Giganotosaurus, explains how to acquire rare Papo models and provides two sure-fire tips to spot a genuine Papo seller.

Papo Models in Perspective – A Different Type of YouTube Video

Usually, when Everything Dinosaur creates a video, it is a review of a single prehistoric animal figure.  However, the latest video explains what it is like to work with a model making company.  The new for 2020 Papo Giganotosaurus model is discussed and shown in detail, information on how to pronounce Giganotosaurus (Gig-ah-note-oh-sore-us) is provided, guidance provided by the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) is explained.

Tips on Finding Retired Models

The narrator discusses recent Papo model retirements and explains how Everything Dinosaur keeps the prices of out-of-production replicas reasonable so that collectors can acquire them without having to pay extortionate prices on other websites.  In addition, the narrator acknowledges that dinosaur fans like to get a good look at the actual figure rather than simply relying on the official images sent out by the manufacturer.

Everything Dinosaur’s dedicated team members post up lots of pictures and videos of the actual models on the company’s various social media pages including this blog (see below).

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We understand that model collectors and fans of the Papo range, like to see the figures themselves rather than rely solely on the official Papo images.  We take lots of photographs of the new models and figures in our own studio and produce some videos too.  This provides collectors with the opportunity to gain an impression of the actual models.  We also try to photograph new replicas next to other models from the same product range, by doing this, viewers can get a better understanding of the size and potential scale of any figure.”
