A Review of the CollectA Ankylosaurus Model (1:40 scale)

By |2023-03-07T08:04:47+00:00March 16th, 2011|Categories: Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

CollectA Ankylosaurus Model Review

CollectA have added a 1:40 scale model of the Late Cretaceous armoured dinosaur Ankylosaurus to their scale model range.  This range has increased over the last two years and includes a number of dinosaur and prehistoric animal models, including T. rex, Brachiosaurus and a number of other armoured dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus and Hylaeosaurus. Today, we review the CollectA Ankylosaurus model.

A Picture of the Collecta Deluxe Ankylosaurus Replica

The model measures twenty-five centimetres in length and stands nearly 10 centimetres tall at the shoulder.  The tail club is shown in mid swing and the animal seems to be bellowing, perhaps warding off an attack from a predatory Tyrannosaurus rex.  The model is well painted and the detail quite fine on what is a large model of an Ankylosaurus.

Purchases of the CollectA Deluxe Ankylosaurus made from Everything Dinosaur’s award-winning website will also include an Ankylosaurus fact sheet, researched and written by team members.

A Video Review of the New Papo Sabre-Tooth Cat Model

Papo introduced a hand-painted Smilodon model into their “Les Dinosaures” range a few weeks ago.  Our team members at Everything Dinosaur, have already written a number of reviews and articles concerning this new replica from the French figure manufacturer.  As part of our product review, we have produced this short video that shows this new model and comments on the use of Smilodon fossil material to help re-create this predator from the Pleistocene.

These extinct predators seem to hold a fascination for many people, and no Ice Age tale such as 10,000 BC or indeed the trilogy Ice Age animated films can do without its resident Smilodons or Sabre-toothed cats amongst the cast of characters.

Smilodon Model

There are a number of Smilodon models available, the fine detail on the coat and the attention to anatomical accuracy puts this new Papo Smilodon up there with the best replicas.

Safari Wild Dinos – Four new Models for 2011

Those clever people at Safari Ltd have created four new exciting models in readiness for 2011 as part of the Safari Wild Dinos models range.  The four models represent two dinosaurs, a gorgonopsid and an ancient crocodile.  The two dinosaurs are Edmontosaurus, a hadrosaurine and Guanlong, an Early Cretaceous theropod from China.  The gorgonopsid is an Inostrancevia, a Late Permian carnivore, whose fossils are associated with Russia.

Clockwise from the back, Inostrancevia, Kaprosuchus, Edmontosaurus, Guanlong.  The crocodile is an ancient ancestor of modern crocodiles.  Its fossils have been found in Africa, and Kaprosuchus was about the size of a modern Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), but was much better adapted to a cursorial lifestyle, and was capable of running quite quickly.  It fed on a variety of animals including small dinosaurs.  This particular animal is sometimes known as “Boar Croc”, due to the size of its tusk-like teeth in its jaws.  Lots of new replicas including dinosaur models available from Everything Dinosaur shortly.

A New Dinosaur Scene Play mat

By |2024-04-20T07:50:10+01:00October 12th, 2010|Categories: Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Dinosaur Scene Play mat with Two Dinosaur Models

We have had several requests from parents and guardians to suggest a dinosaur themed play mat for young children.  There are a number of products on the market and our dinosaur experts are happy to advise on making your very own dinosaur land, it is fun and quite easy to do, especially when you realise that in the Late Cretaceous for example, much of the fauna and flora we see around us today (birds, flowers, trees) had already evolved.

However, if you are looking for a cheap, robust dinosaur play mat, we suggest you check out this particular dinosaur scene play mat from our product range:

Dinosaur Scene Play mat

Dinosaur Scene

This is a great play mat for dinosaur adventures, it comes with two dinosaur models and measures nearly 45cm long by 32 cm wide.  The play mat can be wiped clean so we have also had a number of our customers use this item to sit a dinosaur birthday cake upon it.  In this way, once the dinosaur party is over the host can have the play mat as an extra, special present.

To view the extensive selection of prehistoric animal and dinosaur themed toys and gifts available from Everything Dinosaur’s award-winning website: Visit Everything Dinosaur.

We even have had some of our customers use this play mat as a place mat, which is fine by us.  It certainly is very bright and colourful and very well made.  The parents who trialled this product for us, also liked that it could be rolled up and put away when not being played with.

Guaranteed to help prevent dinosaur models from ending up all over the floor and a great aid to help stimulate creative, imaginative play.

Review of the Safari Prehistoric Sealife Toob

By |2023-01-12T14:55:12+00:00September 22nd, 2010|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Main Page, Press Releases, Product Reviews|2 Comments

Safari Prehistoric Sealife Toob

Everything Dinosaur team members take a look at the Safari Prehistoric Sealife Toob.

Safari Ltd, the American manufacturer of models and historical figures has for a long time marketed sets of small, well-made models in a clear plastic, storage tube.  These sets have proved very popular and a variety of these “toobs”, as our American friends call them, are available.

Safari Prehistoric Sealife Toob

Naturally, we at Everything Dinosaur, are only interested in those items in the range that are related to dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals.  What’s more; our dinosaur experts are particularly fussy about what products we stock.  Each item, is assessed for creative play, quality and the types of prehistoric animals depicted in any model sets.  We work closely with Safari and have already been briefed about new products for 2011, expect to see a tube of prehistoric crocodiles available soon (we will blog about this shortly).

However, returning to the present for a moment, we have just taken stock of the new prehistoric sealife toob.

Prehistoric Sealife Toob from Safari

The picture above shows the ten models that are available in the new prehistoric sealife toob (tube of prehistoric animal models).

Top row, from left to right: Metriorhynchus (prehistoric Jurassic crocodile), Elasmosaurus (Cretaceous plesiosaur), Tylosaurus (Cretaceous mosasaur), Ichthyosaurus (marine reptile), Basilosaurus (primitive whale).

Bottom row, from left to right: Frilled Shark (prehistoric shark), Nothosaurus (Triassic marine reptile), Dolichorhynchops (Cretaceous member of plesiosaur family), Liopleurodon (Jurassic pliosaur) and Henodus  (Late Triassic placodont that resembled a turtle).

Benefits of the Model Set

One of the benefits of a set of models like this, is that it gives collectors the chance to own a model of a prehistoric animal not found in other collections.  A number of creatures featured in this tube for example, are not found in any mainstream model collection.  Each model measures around 8 centimetres in size.  Although, the models are not to scale, they make super additions to any model scenes that are being created.  The Henodus replica for example, would add authenticity to any prehistoric scene featuring primitive ichthyosaurs, and as the Henodus is only a few centimetres long it would fit the scale of many ichthyosaur models that are available.

As the tube contains, ten models, it lends itself to creative play.  Obviously the manufacturers have spent time deciding what animals are to be included in the set, and then quite detailed models have been produced.  Great to see a Basilosaurus model.  Basilosaurus was the primitive whale that featured in the television documentary series “Walking with Beasts”.  It was in episode two – “Whale Killer”.  At around fifteen metres long, this predator took over the niche in the food chain left vacant with the extinction of the marine reptiles.  Fossils of this whale have been found in the Sahara desert, which was part of a warm, shallow, tropical sea 40-36 million years ago.

To view the range of dinosaur sets and tubes and other dinosaur models: Safari Ltd. Wild Safari Prehistoric World.

It is always a pleasure to see a new prehistoric animal model range introduced, the prehistoric sealife set, features a number of prehistoric animals not normally found in model ranges.  Safari are to be congratulated for bringing such a well crafted set of models in a handy storage tube to the market.

New Ankylosaurus from Bullyland of Germany

By |2024-04-19T06:26:40+01:00January 2nd, 2010|Categories: Main Page, Product Reviews|2 Comments

Scale Model of Ankylosaurus from Bullyland of Germany

The new scale model of Ankylosaurus (Ankylosaurus magniventris), is a new interpretation of this Late Cretaceous ornithischian from Bullyland of Germany.  The model depicts this animal as quite lithe and animated in the middle of swinging its large tail club.

To view the Bullyland dinosaur range and other prehistoric animal models including pterosaurs and marine reptiles: Bullyland Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Models.

This scale model is beautifully painted and shows lots of fine detail.  Interestingly, for a model depicting the largest of the known and fully described ankylosaurs, the Museum Line Ankylosaurus model shows a relatively slim line version, far removed from the squat and heavy set Ankylosaurus models that we normally see.  The dermal armour resembles the shell of a turtle with a carapace like appearance, other models show the scutes and other elements of the body armour as more raised.

A New Mini-Dinosaurs Pop-up Book – Triceratops

By |2024-04-15T14:43:59+01:00February 5th, 2009|Categories: Book Reviews, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Mini-Pop Up Dinosaurs Review

At Everything Dinosaur, we are keen to help young readers learn more about dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals.  With a teaching background, our team members recognise the importance of early reading books and we have just added a set of four pop-up books designed with very young readers in mind.

Mini Pop-up Dinosaur Books

Each of the four books focuses on one specific dinosaur – Tyrannosaurus rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops and Brontosaurus.  Whilst we admire the robust hard covers and the size of the book ideal for small hands, it is clear they were not written by a palaeontologist.  The name Brontosaurus is no longer used, it has been replaced by Apatosaurus.

There is an article on our blog explaining why Brontosaurus got its name changed:-

Click here to read “Why Brontosaurus is no more”.

However, putting aside that one faux pas, these pop-ups are an excellent first dinosaur book.  The illustrations are very colourful, the series even includes a pink Stegosaurus (quite accurate as we do think some dinosaurs could turn themselves pink!); and a blue Triceratops.

To view the range of models and dinosaurs toys in stock: Everything Dinosaur.

In each book there are a serious of simple questions about the dinosaur concerned, the print is large and easy to read.  A flap in an illustration on the page is lifted and the answer revealed, there is a little more detail on the back of the flap to help Mums and Dads explain the answer.

A Mini Pop-up Dinosaur Book Featuring Triceratops

Learning about dinosaurs with a mini pop-up dinosaur book.

In addition, each book contains a card, self-assembly model of the animal featured in the book.  When we this series with a group of 3-4 year olds they took to them very well.  The mums had to help assembly the model but the children were able to read along and lift the flaps in the illustrations.

Team members at Everything Dinosaur get asked to review a number of dinosaur books for children, we are happy to oblige.
