Everything Dinosaur Homepage Links to Social Media Sites

Today saw the realisation of a long held ambition of the Everything Dinosaur team members.  The home page of Everything Dinosaur’s website has been linked up to the company’s Youtube and Facebook accounts.  Timing could not be better as there are an additional two video reviews of Safari Ltd products to view on Everything Dinosaur’s Youtube channel – “DinoaurMike1”.  One video is a review of the Prehistoric Sealife Toob made by Safari, the second is a brief review of the new T. rex model, that forms part of the “Wild Safari Dinos” series.

A Sneak Preview New Prehistoric Animal Models for 2012 (Safari Ltd)

By |2023-01-22T19:30:27+00:00October 16th, 2011|Categories: Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal News Stories, Dinosaur Fans, Press Releases|1 Comment

Peeping Behind the Curtain 2012 – New Dinosaur Models

Next year might be the year of the London Olympics, but for us one of the biggest events in 2012 is going to be the launch of new prehistoric animal models from Safari Ltd.

It is always exciting to see the introduction of new models into Safari Limited’s prehistoric animal ranges and the high quality of recent years is being kept up by the latest releases to be announced.

The big news is that the Carnegie Dinosaur Collectibles authentic scale model replicas is going to have a new sauropod.  To accompany the recently introduced Diplodocus, next year a Brachiosaurus in 1:50 scale is coming out.  We said it was big news, the model measures a colossal fifty-five centimetres in length.  It is going to take up pride of place in many a model fan’s collection.  This new replica builds on recent research into the Macronaria and depicts Brachiosaurus as less massive, less “porky” as it were.

“Arm Lizard” – a new model.

The neck is not fully upright, this is to our packing team’s relief as we anticipate a little bit of trouble getting this very large model to fit into padded envelopes for mailing out to customers.

In addition, Safari Ltd are adding four new replicas to their very well crafted Wild Safari Dinos range.  The new introductions are an eclectic bunch that is for sure, we have Dracorex, Ceratosaurus, Acrocanthosaurus and Vagaceratops.  The Dracorex is much more lithe than other models of this pachycephalosaur and it is good to see the “Dragon King of Hogwarts” in this replica range.  For fans of meat-eating dinosaurs you have the Jurassic Ceratosaurus and the Early Cretaceous Acrocanthosaurus to get your teeth into.  We made a friendly wager with another museum that we have not heard the last of Acrocanthosaurus and this American predator might well prove to be a contender for the biggest terrestrial carnivore of all time – we shall see.  Great to see another ceratopsian represented, a really nice model of Vagaceratops, a chasmosaurine whose remains are associated with Alberta and the Dinosaur Provincial Park Formation.

New models from Safari Ltd.

We are grateful to Safari Ltd for releasing the images to our Everything Dinosaur, team members.  We are all looking forward to 2012, looks like it is going to be an Olympic year for dinosaur replicas.

Create a Prehistoric Landscape

Inspired by all the good ideas and suggestions sent into Everything Dinosaur by all those enthusiastic dinosaur fans we wrote and article for an Ezine site on how to build your very own dinosaur play set.  This is a fun and easy thing to do.  Best of all it uses materials that would only have ended up going to recycling or being thrown out.

We have built a number of table top play sets, these allow children to learn about dinosaurs through creative play.  It also provides a handy storage area for the dinosaur toys “to live” without us grown ups tripping over them as they lie on the floor.

With autumn in full swing in the UK, this is the time to collect pine cones and other other such objects, they make great cycad and seed fern substitutes and help to give your home-made prehistoric play set that very realistic look.  Give it a try, we built our first dinosaur play set in just a couple of hours and it kept our young dinosaur fans busy for a wet afternoon at half term.

From Tucows to WordPress – Everything Dinosaur’s Blog Moves Home

Everything Dinosaur’s Blog Moves to a New Home

Even old fossils like the team members at Everything Dinosaur have to move with the times.  The Everything Dinosaur web log has been functioning since late May 2007, to date, something like sixteen hundred articles and pictures have been published.  However, our hosting site has had to move house as Tucows announced that they would no longer be supporting the web log software we were using from early 2012.

Everything Dinosaur

So our blog has upped cyber sticks and moved to wordpress.  We have been assured that our geological tools will still be able to hammer out articles, news stories and other information related to the Dinosauria.  This is good news, as we have a big queue of dinosaur and prehistoric animal themed articles waiting to go up.  The team members at Everything Dinosaur have been assured that even though our brains are about the size of a Compsognathus cerebrum on a good day, we will readily adapt to this new environment.  We shall see, it may take a few days to get our blog site looking tickety boo, but with a bit of luck and practice we will get there soon.

Happiness is a Healthy Socks Life

Dinosaur Themed Socks for your Little Monsters

The new dinosaur themed socks and hand puppets have proved a “roaring” success with many comments received about these socks and how well they are made.  The new Tyrannosaurus rex socks are just what young palaeontologists have been looking for and there are two new additions to this range, both featuring an adult T. rex and a juvenile – a sort of Mum and Baby T. rex set.  With all the new evidence about tyrannosaurid pack behaviour and theories about tyrannosaurs having parental duties towards their offspring, it is always pleasing to see products keeping up with palaeontologists.

The socks shown are the “ice blue” T. rex socks but there is also another new pair in the same design except they are coloured a sandy brown.  These make great additions to our dinosaur themed clothing range.

Snazzy Dinosaur Socks

In addition, Everything Dinosaur has just introduced some snazzy long dinosaur socks that also can double up as dinosaur sock puppets. There are two fetching designs, firstly a skeleton of a horned dinosaur and in hot pursuit of its next meal comes a eye-catching Tyrannosaurus rex themed sock puppet.

The horned dinosaur themed socks are on the left (blue), the T. rex is on the right.  Not sure which ceratopsian is represented, we assumed Triceratops, perhaps the nose horn has been lost somewhere in the toes, anyone for Diceratops in the meantime?

Either way, we know that young palaeontologists are going to have happy feet!

Update on New BBC Television Programmes Featuring Dinosaurs

By |2024-04-22T11:46:44+01:00September 12th, 2011|Categories: Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal News Stories, Dinosaur Fans, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Don’t Forget Dinosaurs Myths and Monsters This Week

With all the excitement over the start of the BBC television series “Planet Dinosaur” this week, we at Everything Dinosaur thought it might be helpful to let readers know about another television programme being shown by the BBC this week.  The hour long documentary “Dinosaurs, Myths and Monsters” is being aired to accompany “Planet Dinosaur” on BBC.  Everything Dinosaur takes a look at television programmes featuring dinosaurs.

Television Programmes Featuring Dinosaurs

Shown on BBC 4 but we think it may also be available on the BBC HD channel, “Dinosaurs, Myths and Monsters”, is being shown straight after the CGI programme on BBC 1 on Wednesday 14th.  “Dinosaurs, Myths, and Monsters” starts at 9pm on the 14th, it is repeated at midnight that same night and it is also repeated late evening on Saturday 17th (10.40pm start).

Historian Tom Holland, explores the history of palaeontology and pieces together how ancient civilisations thought about fossils.  In an epic story that takes us from Greece and its Greek legends to the American Wild West, Tom goes on a journey of discovery to explore the fascinating ways in which our ancestors sought to explain the remains of dinosaurs and other giant prehistoric creatures, and how bones and fossils have shaped and affected human culture.

In the BBC press release they state that this documentary is an alternative history of dinosaurs – the neglected story of how mythic imagination and scientific enquiry have met over millennia to give meaning to the dry bones of prehistory.  Today, as our interest in dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures continues unabated, it turns out we are not so far away from the awe and curiosity of our ancient ancestors.

Which was the Largest Crocodile of All Time?

By |2023-03-08T13:52:40+00:00August 24th, 2011|Categories: Animal News Stories, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|35 Comments

Sarcosuchus, Purussaurus, Deinosuchus or Any Other Candidate?

With a Saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) at an animal park in Queensland (Australia), being recognised as the largest crocodile kept in captivity, team members at Everything Dinosaur started a debate amongst themselves as to which was the largest crocodilian known from the fossil record.

Largest Crocodile Ever

Crocodiles are certainly an ancient group of reptiles, with their origins predating the dinosaurs.  However, which of these animals would be classified as the largest – this might be difficult to say.

A few days ago, we reported that Cassius, an eighteen foot long “Salty” had been declared the largest crocodile in captivity by the Guinness Book of Records.

To read more about Cassius: Record Breaking Monster Crocodile.

However, a number of extinct types of crocodile are known to be much larger.  Indeed, having checked with the Guinness Book of Records, the largest prehistoric crocodile (according to them), is Sarcosuchus (Sarcosuchus imperator), a member of the Eusuchia, fossils of this crocodile are known from Cretaceous strata from Niger (Africa).  Although, there is a lack of fossil material, estimates of length provide a consensus that this reptile may have been ten to twelve metres long.

It has been suggested that this fearsome predator may have weighed eight tonnes.  This would make Sarcosuchus (flesh crocodile) a contender for the largest type of crocodile known.

A Model of the Prehistoric Crocodile Sarcosuchus

2020 Wild Safari Prehistoric World Sarcosuchus.

Wild Safari Prehistoric World Sarcosuchus model.

Then there is the much more recent, South American, giant Purussaurus (Purussaurus brasiliensis).  This prehistoric caiman is known from a number of fossil locations in South America (Brazil, Peru and Venezuela).  An expedition to the Peruvian Amazon back in 2005 discovered more fossils and from one particular skull, which measures over fifty-five inches in length, it has been estimated that this caiman from the Miocene may have reached lengths of between ten and thirteen metres.  We think this member of the crocodile family is also known as Mourasuchus amazoniensis, but this is regarded as a junior synonym.

Deinosuchus

There is also Deinosuchus (Terrible Crocodile) to consider.  Deinosuchus (D. hatcheri) lived during the Late Cretaceous.  Its fossils have been found in the United States.  Once again size estimates are difficult to affirm.  When looking at extant species today, the head length can be assessed as being approximately one eighth the size of the entire animal measured from the tip of its snout to its tail.

This is a useful guide when trying to work out the size of a crocodile or alligator when it it swimming and only a portion of the head is above the water.  Using measurements taken from a huge, nearly complete skull, found in the Big Bend River formation, Texas, and described by the scientists Colbert and Bird back in the 1950s, Deinosuchus was estimated to be over fifteen metres long and to weigh in excess of eight Tonnes.  Since then further analysis of fossil fragments, bones and dermal armour (scutes) has been undertaken and palaeontologists now estimate Deinosuchus to be a little smaller, but it is still a contender for the largest croc of all time.

The jaws are more robust than those of Sarcosuchus, suggesting that Deinosuchus predated upon large animals, perhaps attacking dinosaurs as they came close to water to get a drink.

Which was the Largest Crocodile?

One for the Guinness Book of Records to contemplate.

Team members at Everything Dinosaur have had a go at producing art materials and drawings to illustrate the likely candidates for the title of largest crocodile known to science.

Recently, a group of scientists published a paper detailing their study of suspected Deinosuchus coprolites (fossilised dung), thus providing a potential insight into this reptile’s diet:

To read more about Deinosuchus and a follow up article: Ancient Crocodile Poop Provides Information on the Diet of Deinosuchus.

Update on Deinosuchus: Update on the Diet of Cretaceous Crocodiles.

The crocodiles are indeed an ancient group of reptiles, they evolved into a myriad of forms, some of these were gigantic but as to which genus was the biggest – it looks like we will be debating this for some time.
