Comparing Brands Prehistoric Animal Models – Some Helpful Advice (Part 2)

Earlier this month, we looked at prehistoric animal model brands that are generally classified as toys. We looked at the merits of brands such as Schleich, Wild Safari Prehistoric World and Mojo Fun. In the second and concluding part of this short series, Everything Dinosaur examines some of the options available for collectors of prehistoric animal figures. The fans of prehistoric animals that are looking for museum-quality replicas. Let’s take a look at prehistoric animal models that are likely to appeal to collectors.

There are no hard and fast rules as to which brands of prehistoric animal models are regarded as toys and which ones are collectables. For example, the Natural History Museum range of figures are highly collectable but have great play value too.

Rebor Replicas and Figures

Rebor produces an excellent range of highly detailed, hand-painted, and often articulated prehistoric animal models. Their extensive range includes dinosaurs, prehistoric mammals and extant creatures. Rebor figures include both scale and not-to-scale models. The company strives to produce accurate, museum-quality models as well as more unusual replicas such as the Titanoboa maquette.

Haolonggood Prehistoric Animal Models

The Haolonggood range of prehistoric animal figures is a recent addition to Everything Dinosaur’s portfolio. This Chinese company has ambitions. They intend to introduce more than a dozen new models in 2024. The majority of the figures are dinosaurs, although the company has introduced an extremely good replica of Otodus megalodon. Most of the dinosaur figures are in 1:35 scale and two colour variants are normally offered per genus.

This range is popular amongst dinosaur model collectors.

Beasts of the Mesozoic

The Beasts of the Mesozoic range has a great reputation for the quality of design. This is a range of articulated prehistoric animal figures. The first series to be introduced were the “raptors”. This was a range of mostly dromaeosaurids. A ceratopsian series followed and recently a selection of tyrannosaur figures has been launched. The figures are colourful, with some of the models having more unusual colour schemes such as blue or purple. They are aimed at adult collectors. This range has an age restriction as the models are for display and not for robust play.

There are plans to add prehistoric mammals and some fantasy figures to the portfolio.

Collecting Prehistoric Animal Figures Influenced by Dinosaur Films

Dinosaur movies such as “King Kong” and the “Jurassic Park/Jurassic World” franchises have influenced model making. Lots of manufacturers offer prehistoric animal collectables that reflect prehistoric animals from the big screen. For instance, ITOY Studio offers a small range of figures influenced by films such as “Jurassic Park”.

In addition, many collectors enjoy collecting the Nanmu Studio models. These models are quite large and beautifully painted. Many of the Nanmu Studio figures include bases which makes them ideal for display.

PNSO Prehistoric Animal Models

PNSO have a good reputation for producing scientifically accurate prehistoric animal models. The company offers 1:35 scale sci-art models as well as a wide range of mid-size models. The range has grown and Everything Dinosaur has been involved with this manufacturer for more than a decade. PNSO models are extremely popular amongst collectors.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur praised Eofauna Scientific Research for their range of scale prehistoric animal figures. In addition, the spokesperson mentioned the small, yet detailed and highly collectable Wild Past replicas.

Collectable Prehistoric Animal Figures

In summary, discerning collectors have a wide variety of prehistoric animal brands to choose from. If you are a fan of dinosaur movies, then ITOY Studio or Nanmu Studio are worth considering. However, if you want scientific accuracy then Haolonggood or PNSO might appeal. If you are looking for more than iconic dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex, then Rebor, with its more unusual figures is highly recommended.

Whether you are a budding palaeontologist or an avid model enthusiast, the wide-ranging prehistoric animal model collection at Everything Dinosaur has something to captivate any collector.

The Eofauna Scientific Research T. rex Figure

Dinosaur fans and prehistoric animal model collectors are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Eofauna Tyrannosaurus rex model. The model is expected in stock at Everything Dinosaur soon. Team members have been asked to post up more images of this 1:35 scale figure. A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur also confirmed that this T. rex will be supplied with a removeable display base. The display base has two pegs that the feet of the figure slide onto. Collectors can be assured that their dinosaur model will be stable.

The new for 2024 Eofauna Scientific Research Tyrannosaurus rex figure can be posed on its display base. Collectors can also display their figure without the base.

The Eofauna Tyrannosaurus rex Model

The model has been beautifully painted, and it measures around thirty- four centimetres long. It has an articulated lower jaw. The model can be removed from its base and displayed separately.

The design team at Eofauna Scientific Research have based their T. rex model on the famous “Sue” Tyrannosaurus rex from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. This is specimen number FMNH PR 2081. In the summer of 1990, a field team from the Black Hills Institute of South Dakota were prospecting for dinosaur bones on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. It was team member Sue Hendrickson who found the first evidence of fossils. The fossils were from a T. rex. Subsequent excavations recovered most of the skeleton including an almost complete skull.

The T. rex specimen was nicknamed “Sue” after Sue Hendrickson.

New Review of a Haolonggood Megaraptor Figure

Our thanks to prehistoric animal model fan William who emailed Everything Dinosaur a review of a Haolonggood Megaraptor figure. William had previously reviewed Shi Qian, the blue/grey Megaraptor model. This time, William chose to review the second Haolonggood Megaraptor – Duan Jing Zhu. This theropod dinosaur model is one of two Megaraptor models that have been recently introduced by Haolonggood.

A Haolonggood Megaraptor Figure is Reviewed

William explained that he had seen this dinosaur model featured in YouTube video reviews. He knew that he wanted the pair (Shi Qian and Duan Jing Zhu). In his opinion, the figures were very special and demonstrated that Haolonggood listens to dinosaur model collectors.

Our reviewer praised the accurate sculpt and commented that the figures were nicely balanced, giving the impression that the dinosaur was moving quickly. The large and anatomically accurate claws on the hand were highlighted.

William stated:

“A very fine set of mega hand claws correctly positioned on each forelimb.”

In the review that we had received, William explained that he liked the addition of lips on the figure, and he appreciated the articulated lower jaw. He also commented on the warm colours that the design team at Haolonggood had given the model.

In conclusion, both Haolonggood models were recommended, and the reviewer ended by thanking Everything Dinosaur for their excellent customer service.

William added:

Comparing Prehistoric Animal Model Brands – Some Helpful Advice (Part 1)

Everything Dinosaur is regarded by many as the “go to” company for dinosaur and prehistoric animal model figures. We have been supplying prehistoric animal figures to a global customer base for nearly two decades. With so much experience and knowledge of a wide variety of dinosaur model toys and collectables we are quite well placed to provide advice on different prehistoric animal model brands.

The range of figures can be split into two broad and sometimes overlapping categories. There are the collectables which are often limited editions, then there are those models that can be classified as toys. However, dinosaur toys can be highly collectable.

In the first of this two-part series, we will focus on those brands that are generally classified as toys. A second article will look at the collectables market in more detail.

Prehistoric Animal Model Brands – Toys

There are a huge number of generic toy lines. Some are better quality than others. For example, Mattel has a good reputation of its “Jurassic World” toys. If you are looking for something more accurate than the Wild Safari Prehistoric World range is worth considering. These models are made by the US-company Safari Ltd. They offer a substantial range of products featuring both popular and some of the more obscure prehistoric animal species. This range balances scientific accuracy with affordability and durability. These figures tend to be durable enough for children to enjoy whilst also appealing to collectors.

One of the most popular brands in the prehistoric animal model environment is Papo. Based in France, Papo have been making prehistoric animal figures for many years. They have their own unique style. Some models are more scientifically accurate than others. The figures have intricate skin textures, impressive paint jobs and they are great for creative, imaginative play. Papo models are also popular with collectors and have something of a cult following.

CollectA Prehistoric Animal Figures

If you are looking to collect a lot of models, then CollectA might be the company for you. This company has developed a strong reputation for their attention to detail and scientific accuracy. They also offer an extensive range of impressive figures. There are dinosaurs, including obscure ones, plus ammonites and other invertebrates as well as marine reptiles, pterosaurs and prehistoric mammals.

CollectA produces two model ranges. There is a range of scale prehistoric animal models as well as a range of not to scale figures.

Model Manufacturers in Germany

There are German model manufacturers too. Bullyland offers a small range of figures. This range includes Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops and Velociraptor. These models are great for robust, creative play. One of the best-known of all model manufacturers is Schleich. Schleich is a Germany company that has been producing toy figurines for nearly a century. This range is focused on the toy market, but some models still appeal to the serious collector. Popular dinosaurs are featured such as T. rex and Stegosaurus. However, other more unusual dinosaurs are included such as the bizarre sauropod Bajadasaurus.

Schleich models tend to be reasonably priced. This makes them more affordable when compared to more accurate, museum quality figures. One differentiating factor of the Schleich brand is its focus on play value. Many of their prehistoric animal models are designed to be durable enough for children’s imaginative play. Several figures have articulated joints as well as articulated jaws. An example of good quality design is the Schleich Quetzalcoatlus figure. It uses special hinges and joints that permit the wings to be folded out and also folded up. This was the first pterosaur figure from a mainstream manufacturer to feature this innovation.

The New CollectA Deluxe Dearc sgiathanach Model is in Stock

The new for 2024 CollectA Deluxe Dearc sgiathanach model is now in stock. A scale model of one of the largest pterosaurs known from the Jurassic is now available. This pterosaur, known from a single specimen found on the Isle of Skye, was formally described in 2022 (Jagielska et al). CollectA chose to give their Dearc figure a colour scheme reminiscent of the extant northern gannet. Dearc sgiathanach was probably and animal that inhabited a coastal/marine environment. The northern gannet is a creditable analogue. Gannets are piscivores, just like Dearc and the northern gannet (Morus bassanus) is synonymous with the Isle of Skye.

The CollectA Deluxe Dearc sgiathanach Model

This new CollectA rhamphorynchid measures around thirty-nine centimetres long. The beautiful head with its articulated jaw is approximately eleven and a half centimetres off the ground. Furthermore, the model is nearly fourteen centimetres wide. The CollectA Dearc sgiathanach model has a declared scale of 1:3. Although the wingspan of Dearc sgiathanach is not known, calculations based on related flying reptiles indicate that it was one of the largest pterosaurs of the Jurassic.

An Amazing Dinosaur Model Collection

Our thanks to Dave, an Everything Dinosaur customer, who sent in some photographs of his amazing model collection. He began collecting prehistoric animal figures in January 2021. Since then, he has amassed a wonderful and eclectic collection. To build up such an incredible dinosaur model collection is such a short space of time is quite remarkable.

A Stunning Dinosaur Model Collection

At Everything Dinosaur, we enjoy seeing how our customers display their figures. There is an active and very supportive model collecting community and we really appreciate all the photographs that we get sent. This is an incredible collection, and our team members were able to spot some rare and difficult to find pieces. We could spot some of our own personal favourites too.

Dinosaur model collecting has become an increasingly popular hobby in recent years. Hobbies involving building a dinosaur model collection boomed during the lockdowns of the pandemic. For many collectors, the thrill lies in the hunt for new figures and rare pieces. There is often a race to acquire a model before it is retired and out of production.

Dave commented:

“I am very pleased, and surprised, at the progress I have made in a little more than three years. I have managed to find many retired and difficult to obtain items along the way, but my quest is far from over and there are several pieces which still elude me.”

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur explained that the choice of figures is vast. There the “classic” models of our childhoods as well as beautiful, hand-painted figures inspired by movie franchises. The range of scientifically accurate figures is extremely large. Collectors often specialise in certain areas, such as collecting models from certain manufacturers or confining themselves to figures representing animals from the Jurassic or Cretaceous.

Displaying a Prized Collection

Beyond the collecting itself, many enthusiasts also take pleasure in displaying their prized prehistoric animals. Elaborate custom shelves and cabinets allow collectors to artfully present their miniature prehistoric figures. Some even go so far as to recreate entire dioramas and prehistoric scenes.

We have received photographs of elaborate prehistoric animal dioramas, complete with cycads, conifers and other prehistoric fauna. However, how a collector chooses to display their figures is entirely down to them. Every inch of shelf space has been exploited by this collector. It is a truly remarkable prehistoric animal and dinosaur model collection.

The New for 2024 Eofauna T. rex Dinosaur Model in Stock Soon

The new for 2024 Eofauna T. rex model is due into Everything Dinosaur in the next few weeks. This 1:35 scale figure is based on a Tyrannosaurus rex specimen nicknamed “Sue”. This is the second theropod model to be added to the Eofauna Scientific Research range. A Giganotosaurus carolinii model was introduced in 2019. The new Eofauna T. rex figure is supplied with a removeable display base.

The Eofauna Scientific Research Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur model is supplied with a removeable base permitting the figure to be displayed with or without its display base.

The model measures approximately thirty-four centimetres in length. The figure has an articulated lower jaw.

Eofauna T. rex Model

The “Sue” T. rex fossil specimen was discovered on the 12th of August 1990, by Sue Hendrickson. Extensive excavation and careful preparation resulted in a substantial proportion of the skeleton being saved. The specimen has the formal name FMNH PR 2081. It is one of the most complete and extensively researched of all the large tyrannosaur specimens known. This Tyrannosaurus rex is on permanent display at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago (Illinois).

The design team at Eofauna based their figure on a reconstruction of the Field Museum fossils. They started with the dinosaur skeleton, added the musculature and finally the surface features such as scales, claws and teeth.

The Eofauna Scientific Research range of figures represents a diverse assortment of prehistoric animals. There are four prehistoric elephant figures and two sauropods. In addition to the Giganotosaurus there are two Triceratops replicas in this range too.

“A superb and accurate sculpt from the slender snout to the nicely balanced tip of the right toe.”

The hands were highlighted, and the claws commended. In proportion to their bodies, Megaraptors have some of the largest hands of any big theropod known to science. The long, narrow articulated jaw was also praised.

William also commented:

“Shi Qian’s ocean blue-green hues are very pleasing to the eye.”

In conclusion, our reviewer advised collectors to pick up both the Haolonggood Megaraptor figures if they could. In addition, William thanked Everything Dinosaur for helping dinosaur model fans to build up their collections.

Everything Dinosaur team members have created another YouTube video. This time, it is a YouTube #short. The video features the limited-edition Beasts of the Mesozoic Triceratops figure “Steelhorn”. Only a thousand of these articulated horned dinosaur models have been produced.

This short video highlights the twenty points of articulation and the interchangeable horns. In addition, the limited-edition status of this model is confirmed by the narrator. Only 1,000 “Steelhorn” models have been made.

Beasts of the Mesozoic Triceratops “Steelhorn”

The Beasts of the Mesozoic “Steelhorn” is a wonderful 1:18 scale figure. This articulated dinosaur model is supplied with an Everything Dinosaur Triceratops fact sheet. The model measures nearly forty-six centimetres in length. A spokesperson for Everything Dinosaur confirmed that the model does have twenty points of articulation.

Triceratops is a popular dinosaur model. Numerous Triceratops models have been introduced by manufacturers. In the Beasts of the Mesozoic range, there is a sub-adult Triceratops figure and an adult Triceratops as well as “Steelhorn”.

The Everything Dinosaur spokesperson added:

The YouTube short featuring the Triceratops figure was narrated by Sue. She chose the “Steelhorn” figure as it is one of her favourite models from the Beasts of the Mesozoic range. The video was created as part of an initiative to help team members to be more confident when making presentations. Sue commented that she enjoyed talking about prehistoric animals and model collecting with dinosaur fans. There are more videos including YouTube shorts scheduled to be made in the future. The next YouTube shorts will probably feature some of the new for 2024 CollectA prehistoric animal models.

The New CollectA Nanuqsaurus – Stalking Dinosaur Model

Everything Dinosaur team members are looking forward to receiving the new CollectA Nanuqsaurus – stalking dinosaur model. This figure is expected to be in stock later in the year. The model is part of the CollectA Age of Dinosaur Popular range. This range of not-to-scale figures features over a hundred prehistoric animals.

The CollectA Nanuqsaurus – Stalking Figure

This new theropod dinosaur model measures a fraction under sixteen centimetres in length. It has been carefully crafted and represents Nanuqsaurus hoglundi. This dinosaur was formally named and described in 2014 (Fiorillo and Tykoski).

The name translates as “Polar Bear Lizard”. The binomial name being derived from the Greek and also the local dialect of the Alaskan Inuit people. The fragmentary fossils, including elements from the skull come from the famous Prince Creek Formation of Alaska.

Honouring the Inuit People of Alaska

The holotype fossils represented an animal around five to six metres in length. However, subsequent fossil finds such as isolated teeth indicate that Nanuqsaurus could grow much bigger. An overall body length of around nine metres has been proposed. This would make the size of the polar dinosaur Nanuqsaurus comparable with other Late Cretaceous tyrannosaurs known from lower latitudes. It is likely that Nanuqsaurus was a permanent resident of the Arctic. It was probably the apex predator in the palaeoenvironment.

A team member from Everything Dinosaur confirmed that they were expecting this new Age of Dinosaurs Popular figure in stock later in the year (2024).
