New Review of the Haolonggood Megaraptor Model

By |2024-05-18T06:19:20+01:00May 17th, 2024|Categories: Haolonggood Prehistoric Animal Models|0 Comments

Our thanks to dinosaur model fan William who sent into Everything Dinosaur his review of the recently introduced Haolonggood Megaraptor model (M. namunhuaiquii).  William has been an avid prehistoric animal model collector for some years.  He has recently started collecting Haolonggood prehistoric animal figures.  This is his review of the blue/grey Megaraptor model known as Shi Qian.

The blue/grey Haolonggood Megaraptor figure called Shi Qian.

Haolonggood Megaraptor Model Review (Shi Qian)

William explained that from the moment he first saw the Haolonggood models on a YouTube video he was impressed with them.  He considers them to be very special. Furthermore, he thinks they are rare and unique examples of dinosaur models.  Haolonggood is to be praised for listening to what collectors wish to add to their collections.

The Haolonggood model range: Haolonggood Prehistoric Animal Models.

The Megaraptor figure was described as:

“A superb and accurate sculpt from the slender snout to the nicely balanced tip of the right toe.”

The hands were highlighted, and the claws commended.  In proportion to their bodies, Megaraptors have some of the largest hands of any big theropod known to science.  The long, narrow articulated jaw was also praised.

William also commented:

“Shi Qian’s ocean blue-green hues are very pleasing to the eye.”

In conclusion, our reviewer advised collectors to pick up both the Haolonggood Megaraptor figures if they could.  In addition, William thanked Everything Dinosaur for helping dinosaur model fans to build up their collections.

William added:

“Parcel and packaging are strong and secure from their clear address labelling to the securing of the item in protective bubble wrap.”

The New CollectA Nanuqsaurus – Stalking Dinosaur Model

By |2024-05-16T13:54:42+01:00May 13th, 2024|Categories: CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Popular and CollectA Prehistoric Life Models|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur team members are looking forward to receiving the new CollectA Nanuqsaurus – stalking dinosaur model.  This figure is expected to be in stock later in the year.  The model is part of the CollectA Age of Dinosaur Popular range.  This range of not-to-scale figures features over a hundred prehistoric animals.

The CollectA Nanusaurus - stalking.

The new for 2024 CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Popular Nanuqsaurus -stalking dinosaur model in lateral view.

The CollectA Nanuqsaurus – Stalking Figure

This new theropod dinosaur model measures a fraction under sixteen centimetres in length. It has been carefully crafted and represents Nanuqsaurus hoglundi. This dinosaur was formally named and described in 2014 (Fiorillo and Tykoski).

To read Everything Dinosaur’s blog post from 2014 announcing N. hoglundiAn Update on the New Arctic Tyrannosaur.

The name translates as “Polar Bear Lizard”. The binomial name being derived from the Greek and also the local dialect of the Alaskan Inuit people. The fragmentary fossils, including elements from the skull come from the famous Prince Creek Formation of Alaska.

Honouring the Inuit People of Alaska

The holotype fossils represented an animal around five to six metres in length. However, subsequent fossil finds such as isolated teeth indicate that Nanuqsaurus could grow much bigger. An overall body length of around nine metres has been proposed. This would make the size of the polar dinosaur Nanuqsaurus comparable with other Late Cretaceous tyrannosaurs known from lower latitudes.  It is likely that Nanuqsaurus was a permanent resident of the Arctic.  It was probably the apex predator in the palaeoenvironment.

A team member from Everything Dinosaur confirmed that they were expecting this new Age of Dinosaurs Popular figure in stock later in the year (2024).

The New CollectA Deluxe Velociraptor will be in Stock Soon

By |2024-05-10T14:18:08+01:00May 10th, 2024|Categories: Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Models, Dinosaur Fans, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

The new for 2024, CollectA Deluxe Velociraptor dinosaur model will be in stock soon.  A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that the first new for 2024 CollectA figures will be arriving shortly.  The model has been created to mark the centenary of the formal scientific description of the first Velociraptor species (Osborn, 1924.)  The first Velociraptor species was V. mongoliensis. A second species was named and described in 2008 (V. osmolskae).

A spokesperson from the UK-based mail order company confirmed that the CollectA Deluxe Dearc pterosaur figure along with the 1:100 scale Dreadnoughtus models were arriving first.  In addition, the set of mini-sauropod models will also be stocked shortly.  The new 1:6 scale Velociraptor will be available later in the year.

The CollectA Deluxe Velociraptor Model

The new dromaeosaurid figure features some new anatomical features associated with this type of dinosaur.  This model has a propatagium on each forelimb. A propatagium is a fold of skin associated with the wing of volant birds. It is a soft tissue structure that unites the wrists and shoulders. It helps with the wing flapping motion. Scientists think that this structure may have first evolved to help these terrestrial animals make sharp turns yet remain balanced and stable as they ran.

Scent Glands

The beautiful figure has also been given a pair of scent glands, either side of the cloaca.  Velociraptor was an animal that lived in a desert environment.  It probably lived in packs and had an extensive territory.  It may have used scent marking to define territory and to delineate individual status within the pack.  Many extant birds have scent glands.  Reptiles such as crocodiles have scent glands as well.  The CollectA design team have speculated that Velociraptor used scent marking too.

With such a big tail to waft any fragrances about, it does make sense.

The shape of the figure suggests an agile pursuit predator.  The big tail with its extensive surface area could have helped to disperse scent on the desert wind.  Picture credit: Everything Dinosaur.

New Haolonggood Baryonyx Model (Wei Ding Guo) Reviewed

By |2024-05-02T15:17:40+01:00May 7th, 2024|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Our thanks to dinosaur fan William who sent in a review of the Haolonggood Baryonyx model.  William chose to review Wei Ding Guo, the brown coloured Baryonyx.  William suggested that this model represented a female.  The blue colour variant (Shan Ting) probably represented a male.  Haolonggood have chosen to depict Baryonyx as a lithe and agile animal.  Both Haolonggood Baryonyx models have articulated lower jaws.

William praised the design team and suggested that these figures had been inspired by Dr Scott Hartman’s interpretation of Baryonyx walkeri.

A stunning image of the new for 2024 Haolonggood Baryonyx model Wei Ding Guo wading through some water.

The reviewer stated:

“I really like the brown colouration with the admixture of mottling. It is all very natural and the heavy claw on both hands is expertly done.”

The Haolonggood Baryonyx Model (Wei Ding Guo)

William had been on a special quest to obtain accurate models of Baryonyx. He suggested that the late William Walker, who discovered the holotype fossils, would have been proud to own these Haolonggood figures.  Both models measure twenty-six centimetres in length and stand nine centimetres high.  Haolonggood have proposed a scale of 1:35 for their Baryonyx dinosaur models.

This Haolonggood Baryonyx model was described:

“A most excellent and accurate example of the species to add to one’s collection.”

Best Dinosaur Models and Where to Find Them

By |2024-05-06T21:01:46+01:00May 5th, 2024|Categories: Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Models|0 Comments

What are the best dinosaur models?  Where can I find them?  These are two questions that we at Everything Dinosaur get asked frequently. We would like to think that our website: Dinosaur Models, Toys and Figures. with its award-winning customer service, excellent reputation and worldwide delivery would be an appropriate answer for the second question.  However, what about the first question: what are the best dinosaur models?

The Papo Baby T. rex Models from Everything Dinosaur.  Papo is a popular range.  What are the best dinosaur models to buy?  To answer that question, you need to consider your motivation for purchasing prehistoric animals in the first place.  Picture credit: Everything Dinosaur.

The Best Dinosaur Models

In order to assist you on your search for the best dinosaur figures, it is helpful if we take a step back first.  What is your motivation for making the purchase?  For example, are you buying for yourself or for someone else?  Is this purchase a gift?  Just as we need to consider your motivation, we also have to take into account the needs of the end user, if the dinosaur model is a present.

Schleich prehistoric animal models are great for robust, creative play.  There are a wide variety of colourful figures to choose from and famous dinosaurs like Stegosaurus and T. rex are represented.  These figures tend to be inexpensive, at least when compared to large, scale models (more about these types of figures later). If you are a grandparent, parent or guardian buying a present for a child, then the Schleich range could be for you.

Mojo Fun Prehistoric Animal Figures

An alternative to Schleich is the Mojo Fun range of prehistoric animals.  This range is also quite substantial.  In addition, the models are colourful and suitable for robust, creative play.  In common with Schleich, the models are suitable for children from three years and upwards.

Schleich prehistoric animal models are great for robust, imaginative play.  Mojo Fun have their advocates too. However, these ranges are not the most scientifically accurate.  What do you do when your young dinosaur fan wants figures that more accurately represent the fossil record?

Finding Accurate Dinosaur Models

Finding accurate dinosaur models can be challenge.  Fortunately, our dinosaur experts are on hand to provide advice.  There are two ranges that help support creative, imaginative play and also reflect scientific thinking.  Firstly, there is the Wild Safari Dinos model range.  This is a beautiful range of dinosaur and prehistoric animal figures.  It has an excellent reputation for scientific accuracy.  The models tend to be relatively inexpensive and there is a wide selection to choose from.

Nine new models in stock at Everything Dinosaur

The extensive range of Wild Safari Prehistoric World prehistoric animal models are in stock at Everything Dinosaur.

To purchase Wild Safari Prehistoric World figures: Wild Safari Prehistoric World Models.

Secondly, we can recommend CollectA.  This company produces two ranges.  The first range consists of models of prehistoric animals with a declared scale.  This range is called “CollectA Deluxe”.  The other, much bigger range consists of not-to-scale figures. This range contains hundreds of models, including many obscure ones which would keep the most fussy of young dinosaur model collectors happy.  It is referred to as “CollectA Popular Age of Dinosaurs” or sometimes as “CollectA Prehistoric Life”.

Dinosaur Models for the Serious Collector

Which ranges to recommend for the collector who just wishes to display their figures?  What can we say about those collectors who view model collecting as an investment?  There are two ranges that have emerged as favourites with prehistoric animal model collectors.

The first of these ranges is from PNSO.  This manufacturer has been around for ten years or so.  They produce small figures, but their reputation has been earned through their 1:35 scale model series and their beautiful mid-sized models.

Are these the best dinosaur models?

In addition, there is the recently introduced Haolonggood range to consider.  Everything Dinosaur began to ship in Haolonggood figures around two years ago.  These models have proved popular with prehistoric animal figure collectors.  There are about twenty models to collect in this 1:35 scale range.  Haolonggood intend to add another dozen or so this year.

The Best Dinosaur Models – These are the Ones You Decide to Collect

In truth, there is a huge selection of dinosaur models to choose from.  We have not mentioned Papo, Bullyland or Wild Past for example.  In addition, we have not included our thoughts on Nanmu Studio, Beasts of the Mesozoic, Rebor, Kaiyodo or ITOY Studio in this blog post.  With dinosaur model collecting, there are no hard or fast rules.  Our advice is to simply enjoy the dinosaur models that you purchase.  The best dinosaur models?  These are the ones that you like, and that’s really all that matters.

Popular Beasts of the Mesozoic Gorgosaurus and Feefo Reviews

By |2024-05-01T13:29:45+01:00May 3rd, 2024|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur team members came across a post on Facebook enquiring about the Beasts of the Mesozoic Gorgosaurus model.  A request had been made for views and opinions on this articulated dinosaur figure.  The UK-based mail order company had received several customer reviews regarding this tyrannosaur.  We were happy to share these reviews and to post them up onto the Facebook thread.

The Popular Beasts of the Mesozoic Gorgosaurus

The Gorgosaurus figure has proved to be extremely popular amongst collectors since its launch.  The two customer reviews we shared on the Facebook thread had been collated by Feefo.  Feefo provides genuine customer reviews.  Both reviewers gave the figure five stars (top marks).

The first reviewer stated:

“Gorgeous colours, fine details, love how big this figure is.”

The Beasts of the Mesozoic Gorgosaurus model is in 1:18 scale.  It measures more than fifty centimetres long.

The Beasts of the Mesozoic Gorgosaurus libratus articulated figure inspired the illustration. The Gorgosaurus figures is scheduled to be part of the third wave of these tyrannosaur figures (September 2023).

The second Feefo review that Everything Dinosaur added to the Facebook post stated:

“Five stars for the model for the paint application. Five stars for the sculpt work and style of the model. Size is nice. My only minor thing is the joints on mine are slightly too stiff but always recommend to heat gently with a hairdryer before doing too much posing to stop you breaking the joints. I definitely will be getting more from the range and would recommend them to collectors.”

It is always a pleasure to provide information to fellow dinosaur model fans.  We hope that the two Feefo reviews we posted were useful to the Facebook group members.

New Haolonggood Baryonyx Dinosaur Model Reviewed (Shan Ting)

By |2024-05-02T13:58:02+01:00May 1st, 2024|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Our thanks to William for sending into Everything Dinosaur a review of a Haolonggood dinosaur model.  William chose to review one of his recent acquisitions.  The review concerns the Haolonggood Baryonyx dinosaur model (Shan Ting).  This is the blue coloured Haolonggood Baryonyx.

The Haolonggood Baryonyx model is shown in lateral view in the image above.  This was one of a pair of Baryonyx figures introduced recently by this Chinese manufacturer.  The second figure is known as Wei Ding Guo.  Our reviewer considered the blue colour variant to represent a male.

The Haolonggood Baryonyx Dinosaur Model (Shan Ting)

William explained that he really liked this dinosaur model, and he admired the figure’s details.  He added:

“The Haolonggood Baryonyx walkeri (Shan Ting) is a superb sculpt from the articulated jaw to the legs with their well-executed skin texture. I really like the blue colouration used to display to his mate.”

Dinosaur model fans and collectors have been praising the Haolonggood range.  The Baryonyx figures are popular, and it is great to see a new version of this spinosaurid.  Both Haolonggood models have articulated lower jaws.

To view the range of Haolonggood figures available from Everything Dinosaur: Haolonggood Prehistoric Animal Models.

William highlighted the thumb claw on the figure and commented that the design team at Haolonggood had done an excellent job. He explained that it had been a quest for him to find the most accurate representation of “Walker’s heavy claw”. Haolonggood seem to have favoured Dr Scott Hartman’s gracile restoration.

In summing up his recent purchase William stated he thought these Baryonyx models were worthy of being given to the late William Walker who discovered the Baryonyx holotype.

How Accurate are Dinosaur Models?

By |2024-04-21T09:19:06+01:00April 28th, 2024|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|2 Comments

Dinosaur models are extremely popular today.  However, how accurate are dinosaur models? Or do they reflect the scientific inaccuracies of yesteryear?

In 1824 the first dinosaur was scientifically described (Megalosaurus bucklandii).  This dinosaur and others such as Iguanodon and the armoured dinosaur Hylaeosaurus were described before the term Dinosauria came into being.  With the Great Exhibition of 1851 being moved to South London under the direction of the Crystal Palace Company, the sculptor Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins was employed to create life-size prehistoric animal statues to populate the site.  It is thought that the first commercial prehistoric animal figures were commissioned due to the popularity of the sculptures created by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins.  They were designed to help educate and inform.

How Accurate are Dinosaur Models?

Many dinosaur models today are manufactured with the same lofty ambitions – to educate and inform.  However, the majority are aimed at children and designed for creative, imaginative play.  The makers of these models can still strive for scientific accuracy, to create a figure that reflects current scientific thinking.  To their credit, many manufacturers do achieve a high degree of accuracy with their products.  As our ideas about dinosaurs have changed, then so have dinosaur toys and models changed to reflect these developments.

Megalosaurus bucklandii

Numerous models of Megalosaurus bucklandii have been produced over the years.  This Jurassic theropod may not be as well-known as the likes of Tyrannosaurus rex, but Megalosaurus models do reflect changes in how we perceive the Dinosauria in general.  For example, the London Natural History Museum commissioned a range of dinosaur figures.  These models were designed under the stewardship of Professor Paul Barrett.

The Megalosaurus model in the range is more than twenty years old. It does show the dinosaur with its tail off the ground, an accurate reflection of dinosaur posture.  Megalosaurus is depicted as a biped.  The quadrupedal stance assumed by Sir Richard Owen and reflected in the Crystal Palace dinosaurs has gone.  The feet are oversized. This is a common issue with dinosaur models.  The feet are made bigger so that the model is more stable.

Natural History Museum Megalosaurus dinosaur model.

It might be the 200th anniversary of the scientific description of Megalosaurus, but the Natural History Museum Megalosaurus figure is still going out of production. Perhaps it will be replaced with a new line which might include an updated Megalosaurus model.  Picture credit: Everything Dinosaur.

The model manufacturer CollectA introduced an updated version of Megalosaurus bucklandii in 2021.  It replaced a Megalosaurus figure that had been introduced a decade earlier.  The body proportions are different, and the dinosaur has lips.  The position of the arms has changed, and the model has some quills running along the back of its tail.  This is a more accurate reflection of the science of palaeontology.  Although the designer has still used their imagination to help develop this figure.

Our Views About Dinosaurs Have Changed

Our understanding of the Dinosauria has changed dramatically since the middle of the 19th century. When Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins was designing his statues the science of palaeontology was very much in its infancy.  Sir Richard Owen, who was later to help establish what we now refer to as the London Natural History Museum acted as the scientific consultant for the project.  The trend for consulting palaeontologists to help design dinosaur models continues today. So, when determining how accurate are dinosaur models, some models do not reflect modern scientific thinking.  However, there are many dinosaur models in the market that do.

Today, customers have a lot of choice when it comes to prehistoric animal figures.  There are lots of manufacturers.  Some are better than others, but there is a growing trend to produce prehistoric animal models that at least attempt to reflect some of the latest ideas from palaeontologists.

Rebor Dinosaur Models Make a Fantastic Display

By |2024-04-19T13:49:41+01:00April 27th, 2024|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

Our thanks to model collector and dinosaur fan Carl who sent into Everything Dinosaur some photographs of his Rebor dinosaur models on display.  The cabinet is packed with excellent prehistoric animal models.  The Rebor Stegosaurus figures and the retrospective Tyrannosaurus rex figure are in 1:35 scale.  It certainly is a stunning dinosaur model display.

Rebor Dinosaur Models

The first Rebor figures were introduced a decade ago.  Since then, the range has grown dramatically.  The Stegosaurus models (S. armatus) were first manufactured in 2019.  The retrospective T. rex figure was added to the Rebor range two years later.  Carl has cleverly combined the two prehistoric animals to make a striking display.  Both figures show lots of detail, and the T. rex figure has an articulated lower jaw.

The Rebor 1:35 scale 80s T. rex Toy HD Remastered “Californiacation” VHS figure represented a departure for Rebor.  It is a tribute to the prehistoric animals seen in movies from earlier in the 20th century.  It reflects the way in which dinosaurs were depicted by famous pioneers of stop motion animation such as Willis O’Brien and Ray Harryhausen.

Collecting Prehistoric Animal Models

There is a lot to be admired about the Rebor model range.  The figures have been carefully designed and show some amazing detail.  They are robust and beautifully painted.  Several of the figures, including the stegosaur replicas are supplied with bases.  Carl has ensured the bases are incorporated into his dinosaur model display.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur praised the prehistoric animal model display and commented that the stegosaurs and tyrannosaurs looked very much at home.

The spokesperson added:

“We are always delighted to receive photographs from model collectors showing their prehistoric animal figures on display.  Rebor dinosaur models tend to be a favourite subject area when it comes to sending images to Everything Dinosaur.”
