How Big is the PNSO Ceratosaurus Dinosaur Model “Nick”?

By |2023-11-30T22:04:45+00:00April 3rd, 2019|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

How Big is the PNSO Ceratosaurus Dinosaur Model?

The new for 2019 PNSO Ceratosaurus dinosaur model “Nick” is certainly making waves amongst dinosaur fans and model collectors.  Staff at Everything Dinosaur are not sure why our chums at PNSO chose to call their Ceratosaurus figure “Nick”, but all of us have been very impressed with the quality and craftsmanship demonstrated in this exceptionally large dinosaur model.

PNSO “Nick” the Ceratosaurus

How big is the PNSO Ceratosaurus?   We could get out one of our tape measures or geological rulers to show just how huge this model is, but, instead we have created a short video that compares the PNSO Ceratosaurus with the recently introduced CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus.  After all, a picture (or in this case a short video), is worth more than a thousand words, or so the saying goes.

The New for 2019 PNSO Ceratosaurus “Nick” Compared to the CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus Figure

Comparing the PNSO Ceratosaurus to the CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus

In this short video (it lasts a little over thirty seconds), we compare the PNSO Ceratosaurus dinosaur model with the CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Ceratosaurus, which itself is a sizeable dinosaur replica.  The CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus is a recently introduced model, it only came out last year.

To read about all the new for 2018 CollectA Deluxe prehistoric animal models: CollectA Deluxe Figures Introduced in 2018.

However, the CollectA figure is dwarfed by the impressive and enormous PNSO Ceratosaurus.   The PNSO replica is one of the largest theropod figures that we have ever stocked.

Tale of the Tape – Ceratosaurus Dinosaur Models

The CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus is not a small dinosaur model by any means, but in our video, it looks tiny compared to the colossal PNSO Ceratosaurus.  For the statisticians amongst us here are the model measurements:

  • CollectA Ceratosaurus – length 27 cm approximately with a head height of 12 cm.
  • PNSO Ceratosaurus “Nick” – length around 58 cm approximately, with a head height of about 26 cm.

Remarkably, the base for the PNSO figure is around ten times the size of the base associated with the CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus.

Ceratosaurus But Which Species?

A number of species have been assigned to the Ceratosaurus genus and it is difficult to decide which species these replicas represent.  For example, do they represent C. nasicornis or perhaps C. dentisulcatus?  Whatever the species epithet, both these models are most impressive, but the PNSO Ceratosaurus is going to need a lot more shelf space.

In terms of calculating a scale for the PNSO model, this is challenging.  The maximum size for Ceratosaurus is unknown with estimated lengths ranging from about 4.5 metres to excess of 6 metres depending on the fossil specimen and the species.  If we take the upper figure (six metres) and we estimate the length of the PNSO Ceratosaurus to be about sixty centimetres, then, based on this crude assessment, the PNSO figure is in approximately 1:10 scale.

This is a huge model, the box alone measures more than half a metre in length.  The model inside is enormous and it deserves top billing in our spring newsletter.  The figure is beautifully painted and depicts this Late Jurassic theropod in an aggressive pose with one foot raised off the ground.  The model is supplied with two supports to help it to be displayed.  It towers over other theropod dinosaur models.

The eagerly awaited PNSO Ophthalmosaurus has also arrived and it features in the newsletter too.  A number of academics, palaeontologists and other scientists have made enquiries about PNSO replicas.  The Ophthalmosaurus replica for example, will be used in science communications work.  As well as sending out the newsletter to our subscribers, team members were busy ensuring that all those customers who had requested one of these models was contacted.

A New Mamenchisaurus Plus the Return of Megalodon and Basilosaurus

PNSO have created a 1:35 scale model of Mamenchisaurus, an iconic sauropod from China that had the longest neck relative to its body of any known member of the Sauropoda.  Mamenchisaurus had nineteen cervical vertebrae and the neck of this twenty-one metre monster measured a whopping fourteen metres or so.  It features in the Everything Dinosaur newsletter alongside a returning favourite, the PNSO Megalodon shark model is back in stock.

PNSO T. rex “Wilson”, Triceratops “Doyle” and the Small Prehistoric Animal Figures

It can’t really be an Everything Dinosaur newsletter without one mention of Tyrannosaurus rex.  The 1/35 th scale T. rex called “Wilson” is back in stock along with its counterpart, the magnificent Triceratops “Doyle” which has been modelled in the same scale.

Also just arrived at Everything Dinosaur, are the latest editions to the PNSO small prehistoric animal model range.  The set includes twenty-four, beautifully sculpted little prehistoric animal figures in the PNSO Toys that Accompany your Growth series.  In the image, that we created for our spring newsletter, only fourteen of the twenty-four models were depicted, but this is enough to give model collectors a good idea of the breadth and the quality of this exciting replica series.

Everything Dinosaur’s first newsletter of the spring features the first of the new for 2019 CollectA figures and a special offer on an extremely rare Bullyland flying reptile figure.  The latest figures in the CollectA “Age of Dinosaurs” series have arrived and it is great to see the Deluxe Caiuajara with its movable jaw, the Borealopelta, Edaphosaurus and the box of mini prehistoric animal models in stock.  Top billing in the newsletter is given to the remarkable CollectA Deluxe Carnotaurus – we know how keen dinosaur fans and model collectors have been on this model since we announced that it was going into production, back in November (2018). An opportunity for Carnotaurus fans to rejoice.

The CollectA Edaphosaurus

Ever since the 1:20 scale CollectA Dimetrodon was introduced in 2018, fans of this range have been eagerly looking forward to the addition of another Permian pelycosaur to this series.  The hand-painted 1:20 scale CollectA Edaphosaurus lives up to all the hyperbole and it makes a great accompaniment to the Dimetrodon figure.

Flying Reptiles from Brazil and an Armoured Dinosaur from a Canadian Mine

Everything Dinosaur has also received a shipment of Caiuajara models, complete with an articulated lower jaw.  Fossil of this pterosaur were found in Brazil.  The CollectA Borealopelta figure has also arrived, although sadly, several cases of models were lost during shipment.  A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that plans were in place to get more of these armoured dinosaur models into stock as quickly as possible.  Perhaps, the missing models have got lost in a mine, as the only known Borealopelta specimen was discovered in a mine located in north-eastern Alberta (Canada).

A Recipe for Dinosaur Shortbread Biscuits

Ingredients (Makes About Twenty Biscuits)

  • Butter or margarine 110 grammes (4oz)
  • Caster sugar 50 grammes (2oz)
  • Plain flour, sifted 175 grammes (6oz)
  • Extra caster sugar for dusting

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 150°C /300°F (Gas mark 2).  Lightly grease two baking sheets.
  2. Begin by first beating the butter (or margarine) with a wooden spoon to a soft consistency, and then beat in the sugar, followed by the sifted flour.
  3. Still using the wooden spoon, start to bring the mixture together, then finish off with your hands to form a paste.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a board lightly dusted with caster sugar, and then quickly and lightly roll it out to about 1/8 inch (3mm) thick (dusting the rolling pin with sugar if necessary).
  5. Cut the biscuits out using dinosaur biscuit cutters or, a dinosaur-shaped card that acts as a template and then arrange them on the baking sheet and bake on a highish shelf in the oven for 30 minutes.  Cool the biscuits on a wire rack, dust them with some caster sugar, and store in an airtight tin to keep them crisp.
  6. Once cooled, the biscuits can be iced and decorated to make a fun dinosaur themed snack or an ideal party food for a prehistoric animal themed party or other special occasion.

New Reflections on Hyaenodon gigas

By |2023-11-30T07:22:28+00:00March 19th, 2019|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

Reflecting on Hyaenodon gigas

The extinct clade Creodonta, a term first used by the famous American palaeontologist Edward Drinker Cope (1875), was composed of a great variety of carnivorous mammals, of all shapes and sizes.  One of the most imposing of these predatory mammals was Hyaenodon gigas.  With a shoulder height of around 1.4 metres H. gigas was one of the largest members of the Hyaenodontidae family.  For a comparison, male Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris tigris), stand around 1 metre high at the shoulder.

A fully grown H. gigas is estimated to have weighed around half a tonne.  This was a very formidable carnivore.

Those clever people at Safari Ltd have created a stunning image that highlights the beauty and detail of their Wild Safari Prehistoric World Hyaenodon model.

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Hyaenodon gigas Model

Last year, Safari Ltd introduced several new synapsid models.  For instance, a Przewalski’s horse was added to their “Winner’s Enclosure” collection.  Numerous prehistoric mammals as well as a stunning Dimetrodon replica were also launched.  In 2018, Safari Ltd added the Hyaenodon gigas, Uintatherium, Megacerops, Macrauchenia, a Daeodon and a model of an American Mastodon (Mammut americanum).

Congratulations to Safari Ltd

Our congratulations to Safari Ltd for making such a diverse range of figures and for producing such stunning images to accompany their model range.  The use of light and the clever photoshop effect of movement of the water in the puddle adds a new level of authenticity to their figures.  The reflection of the Hyaenodon model has been skilfully created and we look forward to posting up more examples of this sort of creativity on our blog in the near future.

The picture above shows the first four models coming into stock along with the mini prehistoric animal model set which will feature an additional twelve figures.  Back in November, when we were given the official go ahead to discuss the 2019 CollectA offering, Everything Dinosaur team members posted up the first pictures of these hand-painted models.  They were very well received.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

” We are delighted to announce that the first new prehistoric animals from CollectA are going to be in stock very soon.  These quality models capture the essence of CollectA, they don’t just focus on dinosaurs, only two of the sixteen figures represent members of the Dinosauria [Carnotaurus and Borealopelta], we know how keen model collectors are to acquire animals from the Palaeozoic and Cenozoic Eras as well.”

Detailed Prehistoric Animal Models

Many manufacturers focus on just a handful of figures, but the CollectA range is huge with a wide variety of prehistoric animals (and plants) represented.  Over recent years the company has introduced several sets of mini-prehistoric animal figures.   Later on this month, Everything Dinosaur will be receiving stocks of the prehistoric animal model set, or as we at Everything Dinosaur like to call it “the synapsids plus one”.  All the figures are synapsids, with the exception of the mini Kelenken model, which as a bird comes from the archosaur lineage of diapsids.

Beasts of the Mesozoic Atrociraptor

Beasts of the Mesozoic Atrociraptor marshalli

Our thanks to dinosaur model fan and collector Caroline who sent us some beautiful photographs of her recently purchased Beasts of the Mesozoic Atrociraptor marshalli figure.  The taxonomic position of Atrociraptor within the Dromaeosauridae remains contentious, however, with a short, powerful jaw and oversized teeth this predator lives up to its scientific name meaning, that of “cruel or savage thief”.

Everything Dinosaur were sent some Photographs of the Atrociraptor Figure Outdoors

The outdoor location really brings out the colouration of the model, the exquisite way in which the bright red elements of the plumage have been blended in with the muted tones of brown and black.  The sun lit model highlights the texture and the individual feathers on the torso and the top of hips can be clearly seen in this well-composed photograph.

Atrociraptor marshalli

Named and described in 2004, some eighty years after the far better known Velociraptor (V. mongoliensis) was described, this dinosaur is estimated to have reached a length of approximately two metres and weighed around fifteen kilogrammes.  The fossil material associated with this genus comes from the famous Horseshoe Canyon Formation of southern Alberta, however, a single jaw fragment and some isolated teeth from the Two Medicine Formation of Montana may also represent Atrociraptor.

Fast Delivery of a Fast Member of the Dromaeosauridae

When sending her pictures to Everything Dinosaur Caroline commented:

“The order arrived not long ago.  Thank you for the fast delivery.  Please use the photos of the Beasts of the Mesozoic Atrociraptor marshalli if you wish.”

We are happy to post up Caroline’s excellent photographs, pictures of a fast running dinosaur, that was delivered quite fast as well.

A spokesperson for Everything Dinosaur praised the images saying:

“We are always pleased to receive photographs of purchases from customers.  The Atrociraptor model looks fantastic in these outdoor shots.”

Nemicolopterus or a Juvenile Sinopterus?

By |2023-11-23T14:28:47+00:00March 1st, 2019|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Drawings, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

Nemicolopterus or a Juvenile Sinopterus?

As it is March 1st, team members at Everything Dinosaur, thought it appropriate that on St David’s Day, the patron saint of Wales, it might be a good idea to post up a picture of one of the welsh dinosaurs such as Pantydraco (P. caducus) or the recently described Dracoraptor (D. hanigani), but in the end we decided to post up a picture of a very tiny pterosaur instead.

As we prepare for the arrival of the new for 2019 PNSO models, we have been busy researching and writing fact sheets to accompany sales of these figures.  One of these new PNSO models is a replica of Nemicolopterus, which if it is a valid genus, represents the smallest member of the Pterosauria described to date.

A Tiny Chinese Pterosaur

With a wingspan not much bigger than a garden robin (Erithacus rubecula), Nemicolopterus probably weighed less than 100 grams.  Assigned to the Tapejaridae family, this little flying reptile, known from a single fossil specimen, has attracted quite a lot of controversy since it was named and described in 2008.

To read Everything Dinosaur’s 2008 article about the discovery of Nemicolopterus: New Species of Tiny Pterosaur from China.

The unfused bones and body proportions are very typical of a juvenile pterosaur.  It has been suggested that the fossil specimen might not represent a tiny species, but the juvenile stage of a much larger pterosaur.  For example, a number of academics have compared the Nemicolopterus fossil to juvenile specimens of the tapejarid Sinopterus, which is also known from China.

The PNSO Nemicolopterus (or whatever genus the figure should represent), is coming into stock at Everything Dinosaur in the next few weeks.

Dragons and Dinosaurs

It has been suggested that Nemicolopterus may not be a valid genus.  It has been proposed that the fossil material should be re-assigned to the genus Sinopterus.  Whatever the outcome, on March 1st, in honour of a Welsh national symbol and with a nod towards the orient and the legends of dragons from the Far East, we thought it appropriate to post up some images of a tiny flying reptile.

Happy St David’s Day.
