A Fantastic Late Cretaceous Dinosaur Diorama

A Late Cretaceous Dinosaur Diorama

Prehistoric animal model collector Robert Townsend very kindly sent some photographs into Everything Dinosaur featuring his Late Cretaceous dinosaur diorama.  Robert has created for himself, his very own super-sized model prehistoric landscape, featuring authentic vegetation, artificial rocks and a dinosaur watering hole complete with dinosaur tracks and footprints.

His latest project involved creating typical prehistoric scenes reflecting the fauna of the Late Cretaceous (Campanian and Maastrichtian faunal stages), of North America.  We can expect to see a landscape dominated by duck-billed dinosaurs, ornithomimids, pachycephalosaurs with the apex predatory positions occupied by tyrannosaurids.

North America in the Late Cretaceous

Using Robert’s large collection of prehistoric animal models, the majority of which have been purchased from Everything Dinosaur, he has created a series of mini dramas within his super-sized landscape and his focus has been to use prehistoric animal figures representing animals from the famous Hell Creek and the slightly older Dinosaur Provincial Park Formations of North America.

Admittedly, the addition of the Bullyland Pteranodon sternbergi model (Geosternbergia sternbergi), which is associated with the Smoky Hill Chalk Member of the Niobrara Formation (Kansas) is interesting, after all, this animal is associated with marine and not terrestrial deposits.  However, these large pterosaurs were accomplished fliers and they may have frequently flown inland, perhaps to find fresh water.

The Bullyland Pteranodon sternbergi figure has been out of production for a long time, but Everything Dinosaur was able to acquire some of these extremely rare figures.

Not All Horned Dinosaurs and Hadrosauridae in the Dinosaur Diorama

Although, North American herbivorous populations were dominated by the horned dinosaurs and the duck-billed dinosaurs, there were many other types of dinosaur resident too.  Robert has skilfully added a range of different prehistoric animals to his landscape.  For example, ornithomimids and pachycephalosaurs feature as well.

The fleet-footed ornithomimid had better watch out, a recent scientific paper which involved the analysis of the front of the jaw of a pachycephalosaur proposed that these bone-headed dinosaurs may have been partially carnivorous.  To read more about this hypothesis: Pachycephalosaurus – Was it Carnivorous?

Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops

No North American Late Cretaceous dinosaur diorama would be complete without the appearance of Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops.  Creator Robert does not disappoint, he depicts a T. rex feeding on the corpse of “three-horned face” and within the prehistoric scene the tyrannosaurid Albertosaurus can be found along with a horned dinosaur very distantly related to Triceratops – Styracosaurus.

A spokesperson for the UK-based Everything Dinosaur praised the prehistoric landscape and stated:

“We congratulate Robert for his creative use of the prehistoric animal figures and the beautiful details of the diorama.  It is always a pleasure to receive photographs of prehistoric scenes which have been choreographed by our customers.”

Rebor Killer Queen T. rex – Attaching the Tail

By |2023-12-05T10:19:06+00:00April 30th, 2019|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

Rebor Killer Queen T. rex – Attaching the Tail

Fans of the Rebor range of prehistoric animal replicas will know that some of the recent model introductions have had flexible tails.  The three Ankylosaurus models “War Pig” for example, along with the two colour variants of the tyrannosaur figure “Vanilla Ice”, these figures have all been supplied with detachable, flexible tails.  Team members at Everything Dinosaur thought it might be helpful to would-be Rebor collectors if we were to shoot a short video to show how these tails attach to the models.  In addition, for those people who had not purchased one of these Rebor dinosaur models before, we could show how the figures are supplied.

How to Attach the Tail to the Rebor Killer Queen T. rex Dinosaur Model (Jungle Colour Variant)

Video credit: Everything Dinosaur

The Tail is Supplied as a Separate Piece

In this short, thirty second video, we show how the tail is supplied as a separate piece (Rebor Killer Queen Tyrannosaurus rex models) and how it can be inserted into the back of the figure to make the model complete.  Both the Rebor Killer Queen “jungle” and “plain” variants have this feature and the tails are flexible, allowing collectors to put their T. rex into a variety of poses.  The nature of the joint into the posterior of the animal reduces the amount of vertical movement, but in the Dinosauria, generally, the tail could not move a great deal in the vertical plane.  However, the flexible rod in the tail piece permits quite a degree of lateral movement.

In an earlier blog post, we included a short video that demonstrated the flexibility of the tail in a Rebor tyrannosaur model.  To view this post: Rebor Killer Queen T. rex Models Have Poseable Tails.

All the tails in the photograph come from 1:35 scale Rebor replicas.

The tail inserts into the posterior with a positive “click” and the separate tail piece helps Rebor to cut down on product packaging (less cardboard required as the model fits into a smaller box).

Rebor Killer Queen T. rex Models have Poseable Tails

By |2023-12-05T09:34:41+00:00April 25th, 2019|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

Rebor Killer Queen T. rex Models have Poseable Tails

The new for spring 2019 Rebor Killer Queen T. rex models have poseable tails.  Everything Dinosaur demonstrates this function in a short video.  In order to showcase the beautifully engineered Rebor Killer Queen 1:35 scale Tyrannosaurus rex replicas, team members have produced a trio of videos highlighting the various articulated parts.  A few days ago, we posted up a short video from our YouTube channel that showed how to use hot air to safely free up the articulated arms on these dinosaurs.  In addition, a second video was shot which focused on the articulated lower jaw.  Today, we conclude our look at these new figures by revealing that the tail is also poseable.

Rebor Killer Queen Available in Two Colour Variants – “Plain” and “Jungle”

The Killer Queen Rebor replica is available in two colour variants, “plain” and “jungle”.  The “plain” version has more of a brownish hue to it, whereas the “jungle” colour variant is dominated by green tones.  Both models have proved to be extremely popular amongst model fans and collectors.

So many of these figures have been sent out, that Everything Dinosaur team members still get confused for a few moments over which model is which.  For example, in this short video highlighting the moveable tail, the model is referred to as the “plain” version, actually it is the “jungle” variant.  Please be assured, all boxes are checked carefully prior to dispatch, after all, we would not want to send out the wrong coloured model to a collector.

The Everything Dinosaur Killer Queen Videos Have Featured the “Jungle” Variant

Rebor Killer Queen "jungle".

A Stiffened Rod Carefully Built into the Tail Piece

The tail piece fits securely into the rear of the model and it is this tail piece that contains a flexible, stiff rod that enables the tail to be moved into different positions.  We commend Rebor for their creativity and for designing such a beautifully crafted T. rex figure.  The tail has quite a lot of lateral movement and some degree of movement in the vertical plane as well.

The combination of the poseable arms, the articulated lower jaw and the flexible tail permits collectors and dinosaur model fans to depict Tyrannosaurus rex in a huge variety of poses.  Furthermore, they even have two colour variants to choose from as well.

Preparing for a Question and Answer Session with Year 2

By |2023-12-05T07:27:59+00:00April 19th, 2019|Categories: Adobe CS5, Educational Activities, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Teaching|0 Comments

Preparing for a Question and Answer Session with Year 2

This week, sees the beginning of the summer term for schools in the UK.  Everything Dinosaur team members have a very congested programme of dinosaur and fossil workshops to look forward to over the next few weeks and in a few days a member of staff will be visiting a school in Lancashire to conduct a series of workshops with Year 2 classes.

As part of a busy morning of dinosaur and fossil themed activities, the teaching team have requested that we participate in a question and answer session with the budding, eager palaeontologists.  The children will, no doubt, pose some challenging and intriguing questions to our dinosaur expert, however, we have prepared a special question just for them as part of our programme of suggested extension activities.

Visit the Everything Dinosaur website: Everything Dinosaur.

Our question for the Key Stage 1 children (Year 2) – how did dinosaurs keep themselves clean?

Did Dinosaur Preen their Feathers just like Birds?

Mei long illustration.
Did dinosaurs preen their feathers like modern birds?  If many dinosaurs were feathered, how did they keep their feathers clean?

Everything Dinosaur Providing an Extension Activity

Fossil bones and teeth can provide palaeontologists with lots of information about extinct animals, but evidence from body fossils can’t tell us much about how animals that lived in the past behaved.  Trace fossils preserve evidence of the activity of animals, such as tracks, burrows, trails and borings.  From this data, scientists can infer behaviour such as dinosaurs moving in a herd, based on fossilised footprints indicating the same type of animals all moving at the same pace in the same direction.  However, there is very little evidence preserved in the fossil record about how extinct animals kept themselves clean.

Did Sauropod Dinosaurs Wallow in Mud Like Some Large Mammals?

How did dinosaurs keep themselves clean?
If large mammals like extant elephants wallow in mud then perhaps large sauropod dinosaurs behaved in a similar way.

Our Challenge to the Year 2 Classes

In order to answer some of these questions about the behaviour of dinosaurs, palaeontologists examine the behaviours of animals alive today that are related to the Dinosauria.  By observing how birds and reptiles keep themselves clean, then perhaps the likely behaviours of dinosaurs can be deduced or inferred.

Can the Year 2 children conduct research into how living animals keep themselves clean?  Can they transfer this knowledge to the extinct members of the Dinosauria and suggest ways that different dinosaurs such as Apatosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex kept clean?

Extensions

As with all our dinosaur and fossil workshops in school, we like to provide lots of extension ideas to the teaching team.

  • What can the children do to help the animals that live around the school to help them keep clean?  For example, providing a shallow tray filled with water to make a bird bath – linking to the English national curriculum science syllabus – living things and habitats.
  • Why do we need to keep clean?  Why is it important to brush our teeth?  A link to hygiene and personal development.

Rebor Killer Queen T. rex Adjusting the Arms

By |2023-12-05T07:10:27+00:00April 17th, 2019|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

Adjusting the Arms on the Rebor Killer Queen T. rex Dinosaur Model

The recently introduced Rebor Killer Queen T. rex dinosaur models are proving to be very popular with collectors and dinosaur model fans.  This Tyrannosaurus rex figure is available in two colour variants (plain and jungle) and several parts of this dinosaur are poseable.  The lower jaw is articulated, the tail contains a flexible rod that enables it to be put into numerous poses and the arms move to.

Everything Dinosaur has created a short, helpful video that explains how to free up the arms on this Rebor replica.  When first unpacked, the forelimbs can be a little stiff and difficult to move.  However, give the joints a few seconds of heat, such as from a hairdryer and collectors will find that the warmed joints become easier to manoeuvre.  The video has been posted up on our Instagram page along with some more pictures and it is up on our YouTube channel as well.

Helpful Videos for Model Collectors and Dinosaur Fans

At Everything Dinosaur, we use our various social media platforms, such as this blog, our Facebook page along with Instagram and our YouTube channel to post up helpful information about prehistoric animals and dinosaur models.  We will also be posting up videos in the near future that demonstrate the articulated jaw on the Rebor Killer Queen and a video that highlights the poseable tail.

We try our best to educate and inform our customers about the various prehistoric animal models and figures that we supply.  However, we can sometimes get our colour variants mixed up, for example, in the video highlighting how to free up the arms we referred to the figure as a “plain” variant, however, eagle-eyed viewers will spot that we were actually using the Rebor Killer Queen “jungle” colour variant in our video shoot.

A Trade Mark for Everything Dinosaur

Eagle-eyed viewers to our various social media platforms will also notice some subtle changes to our themes and layout.  Everything Dinosaur has received a trade mark and our team members are slowly amending all our social media platforms to reflect this.  For example, our header image for the Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel has already been changed.

A spokesperson for the UK-based dinosaur company said:

“We try and post up helpful images, advice and videos for our customers.  Our YouTube channel contains a number of model reviews, competitions and helpful tips.  When it comes to the Rebor Killer Queen figures, our simple guide to freeing up the arms should help to prevent any unfortunate accidents.  In addition, we have commenced a programme to update our company visuals to reflect our trade mark status.”

Dimetrodon Confrontation Depicted in Stunning Artwork

Dimetrodons Battle for Dominance

Today, we feature another of those wonderful prehistoric scenes created by Safari Ltd.  Safari Ltd have produced some superb images illustrating various models within their excellent Wild Safari Prehistoric World range and today, the sail-backed, pelycosaur Dimetrodon steps into the spotlight.

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Dimetrodon Diorama

Dimtrodon confrontation.

In the illustration (above), a pair of Dimetrodons confront each other.  Such intraspecific conflicts may have been relatively common as animals fought for dominance, mates and territory.

Dimetrodon A Predator of the Permian

Known from North America, Europe and Russia, several species of Dimetrodon have been named.  One of the largest (D. grandis) is estimated to have weighed around two hundred kilograms and measured in excess of three metres in length.  Dimetrodon grandis would have been an apex predator within its ecosystem and it is quite probable that these reptiles (distantly related to modern mammals), would have battled each other to win mates and to gain territory in which to hunt.

In the illustration created by Safari Ltd, we see a pair of Dimetrodons confronting each other against a backdrop of a conifer forest.  It is possible, that these large reptiles may have competed with each other for the best basking sites, an example of intraspecific competition.  After all, if that large sail played a role in thermoregulation, the best places to warm up in the morning would have been at a premium for these large animals.

Evolving Dimetrodon Models

The latest incarnation of Dimetrodon by Safari Ltd was introduced into their model range in 2018.  It ostensibly replaced an earlier figure that had been part of the Carnegie Collectibles model series.  When the Carnegie relationship ended and this part of the Safari Ltd model portfolio was retired, the company had the opportunity to introduce several new figures in subsequent years.  For example, in 2018 the new Dimetrodon replica was one of fourteen new prehistoric animal figures launched.

Wild Safari Prehistoric World Replicas

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Dimetrodon figure is approximately the same size as the earlier Carnegie Dimetrodon (approximately 19 cm long), but there are subtle differences between the two models.  The sails are different shapes, the supporting struts (elongated spines from the vertebrae), are more prominent in the most recently introduced version and the limbs in the 2018 model look more powerful and robust.  These changes reflect the changing interpretation of the fossil material associated with this genus.

To view the Wild Safari Prehistoric World Dimetrodon model and the rest of the figures and replicas in this range stocked by Everything Dinosaur: Safari Ltd/Wild Safari Prehistoric World Figures and Replicas.

Our congratulations once again to the design team at Safari Ltd.  Not only has this company produced some excellent prehistoric animal figures, including monsters from the Palaeozoic like Dimetrodon, they have also produced fantastic promotional images of their creations.

New Look for Everything Dinosaur Website

Regular visitors to Everything Dinosaur’s main website (Everything Dinosaur), will notice some subtle changes to the theme and the website’s framework.  Customers can still expect our award winning 5-star service, that has not changed, nor have we reduced the range of dinosaur and prehistoric themed products that we stock, however, our use of sliders and animation has been reduced to help maintain fast page load times when our site is viewed on mobiles and other devices.

A Fresh, New Look for Everything Dinosaur’s Website

Constantly Working to Improve our Customer’s On Site Experience

Team members at Everything Dinosaur are constantly working to improve and enhance the experience visitors and customers have when they visit our websites.  Making such improvements are part of a long-term and on-going programme of investment to help this UK-based company stay ahead of the curve when it comes to technical developments.  After all, with our knowledge of the Dinosauria, we don’t want Everything Dinosaur going extinct!

The changes we have made will have no bearing on how the site is viewed.  It will have no impact on the site pages, all the customer benefits are retained, the changes just permit those visitors using mobiles and other devices (not viewing the site from a personal computer), to have slightly quicker load times, for the pages that they wish to view or the landing pages that they are directed to.

The Front Page Will Still Inform Customers About New Products and New Models

“These changes are part of an on-going process to reflect changes in technology and the preferences of customers.  We continue to monitor the performance of our various websites on a daily basis and to adjust them so that we can continue to meet the needs of our ever-growing and international customer base.  The first slides we have put up on Everything Dinosaur’s home page support our work with Eofauna Scientific Research and Kaiyodo.  These slides also give us the opportunity to promote our very popular dinosaur and fossil workshops in schools.  We now have greater flexibility in the sort of slides and other visuals that we can use to keep our website refreshed and up to date.”

A Programme of Further Investment

Just like when writing a scientific paper or report, the work done so far is part of a continuing process.  As with science, things move on and the Everything Dinosaur websites are constantly being reviewed and updated to meet the changing needs of the market place.

More Improvements to the Everything Dinosaur Website

More Improvements to the Everything Dinosaur Website

Everything Dinosaur team members have set aside much of the time this week to schedule some adjustments and improvements to the company’s website.  Some minor changes are being made to the way in which pictures are being uploaded onto the site, these alterations are part of Everything Dinosaur’s on-going plans for continuous improvement and customers will not notice any difference in the operation of our various platforms.

As part of the changes, some of the visuals have been updated to include images of recently introduced or items that are being introduced in the very near future.

Continuous Improvement – Kaizen

The Everything Dinosaur website is being constantly examined and analysed in order to detect areas where improvements can be made.  Our aim is to build a culture of continuous improvement and these goals and aims are reflected in the way in which we try to maintain and develop our on-line presence.   All team members have a role to play in helping to develop continuous improvement.  Take for example, some of the visuals that we use to promote various categories and sub-categories of products.  These are updated and refreshed in order to reflect the latest additions to our product range.

Updating Papo Images on the Everything Dinosaur Website

As part of our revision of the images we use on the website, the visual associated with the Papo website has been updated to include the recently introduced brown, running Tyrannosaurus rex figure.  The image also depicts the Papo Pentaceratops and the Gorgosaurus, both models are due to in stock later on this year (summer 2019).

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Updating the visuals is important for our customers, it helps them to see how a product range is changing.  We not only take care to include upcoming, new items but also we ensure that out of production items are removed from these visuals.  After all, we don’t want to confuse our visitors.”

In addition to the Papo category being adjusted, other model categories have been revamped too.  Take for example, the Wild Safari Prehistoric World range of prehistoric animal models and figures.  Virtually all of the new for 2019 models are already in stock at Everything Dinosaur, but plans are well advanced to receive the last of this year’s new models – the Wild Safari Prehistoric World Allosaurus.  As a result, the visual used to promote this sub-category has also been revised.  The new Allosaurus model has been added to this image.
