Young Dinosaur Fans Say Thanks to Everything Dinosaur

Following a trip to Staffordshire to visit a primary school to work with Year 1 and Year 2 children as they studied dinosaurs, our fossil expert set the children a challenge.  Could they produce for her a thank you letter which began with a capital letter, had connectives and used punctuation correctly?

A couple of weeks later our mail bag was extra full as the post office delivered around forty letters. Encouraged by their teachers the children had written some lovely thank you letters to Everything Dinosaur.

For example, Taijah wrote:

“Dear Everything Dinosaur,

Thank you for teaching us about dinosaur fossils.  My favourite part was when you showed me the dinosaur bones.”

Milly added:

“Thank you for teaching us about dinosaurs.”

Dinosaurs as a term topic or even as part of a special science week in primary schools can really help young children get to grips with some fundamentals of science such as observation, investigation and experimentation.  Teaching about dinosaurs in school lends itself to all sort of other extension activities such as independent learning, creative writing and even numeracy exercises.

Everything Dinosaur stocks a rang of dinosaur themed, educational toys and games: Dinosaur Toys and Gifts.

Young Taylor-Joe summed out the benefits of a school visit from Everything Dinosaur when she wrote in her letter:

“I loved learning about dinosaurs and thank you for letting me help with the fossils that you showed the class.  I had a great time.”

School Children Make Dinosaur Notebooks for Display

By |2022-11-14T22:58:57+00:00May 6th, 2008|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Educational Activities, Teaching|0 Comments

Year 1 Children Display their Dinosaur Notebooks

Engaging Year 1 children (aged 5-6), with writing activities can be a challenge for teachers and their teaching assistants, however, if the term topic is dinosaurs and fossils, then it can be more of a case of getting them to stop writing about dinosaurs.  A team member at Everything Dinosaur, came across some marvellous notebooks and workbooks that had been prepared by Year 1 children as part of the study of dinosaurs and prehistoric animals.  With so many extension activities coming out of the lesson plans, the children ended up producing a notebook each all about their favourite prehistoric animal.

Teaching About Dinosaurs in School

Teaching about dinosaurs in school can certainly help and enthuse young children with their writing.  Our member of staff saw books about Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, plesiosaurs and even one about Mary Anning.  Just like real scientists the children had been keen to put their own names on the workbook and it was fun reading them as our team member took a quick break from delivering a dinosaur themed workshop in the school.

Young Dinosaur Fan Writes to Everything Dinosaur

For young Holly, a visit to her school by Everything Dinosaur to teach about dinosaurs and prehistoric animals really made her day.  She was so thrilled to have taken part in a dinosaur workshop that she put pen to paper and wrote Everything Dinosaur a lovely letter telling us how much she enjoyed the event.

Holly wrote:

“Dear Everything Dinosaur,

I liked it when you came to visit our school the other day.  It was my favourite thing that I have done in school all year.  I liked it when you showed us the fossils and thank you for telling us some dinosaur facts.  It was hard to believe that a dinosaur could be as big as my house.  I didn’t know that a girl Tyrannosaurus rex was probably more scary than a boy Tyrannosaurus rex.  I like dinosaurs but I am glad they are not around and that they are extinct!  Dinosaurs can be very big and scary.

Thank you once again for coming to our school.

Holly.”

Thank You Letter

This letter from Holly is typical of the many letters that we receive from school children.  We aim to encourage literacy and creative writing as a result of one of our visits to a school to teach about dinosaurs.

Glad you enjoyed the day Holly.

A spokesperson from the award-winning, UK-based company praised Holly for her wonderful correspondence and thanked all her class mates for their super thank you letters.  The comments and feedback from the children was delightful.

Friendly and Happy Stegosaurus Picture

A Colourful Picture of a Stegosaurus

Team members from Everything Dinosaur, the UK based dinosaur company staffed by parents, teachers and real dinosaur experts saw a very colourful drawing of a friendly Stegosaurus whilst on a school visit to teach about dinosaurs.  The picture had been stuck up onto an outdoor white board in the nursery play area so that the young nursery and reception aged children could also get involved with the dinosaur workshop in school that had been planned for the day.

Friendly Stegosaurus

This dinosaur certainly looks quite friendly, he has a big smile on his face.  We are sure the children enjoyed learning all about dinosaurs and fossils and drawing pictures of colourful, friendly dinosaurs as part of the dinosaur teaching activities in school.

Dinosaur Jokes are Great Fun!

Jokes About Dinosaurs

Whilst delivering dinosaur workshops in school, team members at Everything Dinosaur get told jokes about dinosaurs from the school children that they meet.  Here are a selection of dinosaur jokes that Everything Dinosaur team members came across recently whilst teaching about prehistoric animals in school.

Q. Why did the dinosaur cross the road?

A. Because chickens had not evolved yet!

Q. Why do museums have old dinosaur bones on show?

A. Because they can’t afford to buy new dinosaur bones!

Q. What do you call two dinosaurs bumping into each other?

A. Tyrannosaurus wrecks!

Q. What do you call a Tyrannosaurus rex with a machine gun?

A. Sir!

Q. What do you call a dinosaur that sat on a drawing pin?

A. A Mega-sore-ass!

Q. Why did Archaeopteryx catch the worm?

A. Because it was an early bird!

Dinosaurs as a term topic for Key Stage 1 or 2 children can help them develop their vocabularies, enthuse them about reading as well as to encourage them to write creatively.  When Everything Dinosaur delivers a dinosaur workshop in school, lots of ideas for extension activities follow, as for the children’s jokes, we appreciate them and we are glad to help out in schools.

Which is Your Favourite Dinosaur? An Excellent Question!

Protoceratops is Our Favourite Dinosaur

The other day team members at Everything Dinosaur were asked by a Year 3 pupil during a dinosaur workshop in school, what was our favourite dinosaur?  With over 1,100 genera to choose from there is certainly a wide choice, but after a little bit of discussion we choose Protoceratops.  A large number of fossils of this horned dinosaur have been found, from very old, mature individuals down to babies and of course nests of eggs.  With so much fossil material to study, Protoceratops is right up there as one of Everything Dinosaur’s favourites.

During this particular school visit we discussed with the Year 3 pupils Protoceratops and other horned dinosaurs, we then concluded our dinosaur work in schools on this occasion with a quick question and answer session with our palaeontologists.  It seems that our visit and the dinosaur term topic in general was a big success.

Protoceratops Model

During our discussions we stated how much we enjoyed working on this Asian dinosaur and highlighted a top-quality Protoceratops model.
