Wild Safari Prehistoric World Pteranodon Model Review

The talented team at JurassicCollectables have posted up a short video review of the new for 2019 walking Pteranodon model from the Wild Safari Prehistoric World figure collection.  This video review really helps collectors and prehistoric animal model fans to appreciate the vivid colours that Safari Ltd chose for their new pterosaur figure.  Unlike most flying reptile figures, this new for 2019 introduction, depicts Pteranodon on the ground, after all, these members of the Pterosauria must have spent some time on “terra firma”.

Fantastic Details Around the Skull and the Eye

In the short video review, (the video lasts six minutes and thirty seconds), the narrator takes the Pteranodon model out of its wrapping and provides viewers with a guided tour of the figure.  Much of the video focuses on the beautifully-painted head, crest and beak.  In particular, the painting around the eye is praised.  Safari Ltd  have made Pteranodon figures before, but this is the first Pteranodon model that has been depicted in a walking pose and not with the wings stretched out in a flying position.

In the Video, the Quality of the Painting Around the Eye is Highlighted

Pteranodon longiceps

The genus Pteranodon and the first species (P. longiceps), was erected in 1876 (Othniel Charles Marsh).  Numerous models of this famous Late Cretaceous pterosaur have been made, but few of them with the quality of sculpt and the paintwork of this Safari Ltd replica.  The shape of the crest denotes the species and the tiger colouration and the subtle airbrushing on the crest is admirable.

A Well-crafted Pteranodon Model

This well-crafted figure measures over eight centimetres long and the head is some ten centimetres off the ground.  The Pteranodon model used in the review was one of the first of the production figures to be made.  In this most informative video review, the model is compared with the recently reviewed Kaiyodo Sofubi Toy Box T. rex figure .  The Papo green standing T. rex also features, along with a cameo appearance by off-colour Alan.  No JurassicCollectables video review would be complete without an appearance of the Alan Grant figure.

How Big is the PNSO Ceratosaurus Dinosaur Model “Nick”?

How Big is the PNSO Ceratosaurus Dinosaur Model?

The new for 2019 PNSO Ceratosaurus dinosaur model “Nick” is certainly making waves amongst dinosaur fans and model collectors.  Staff at Everything Dinosaur are not sure why our chums at PNSO chose to call their Ceratosaurus figure “Nick”, but all of us have been very impressed with the quality and craftsmanship demonstrated in this exceptionally large dinosaur model.

PNSO “Nick” the Ceratosaurus

How big is the PNSO Ceratosaurus?   We could get out one of our tape measures or geological rulers to show just how huge this model is, but, instead we have created a short video that compares the PNSO Ceratosaurus with the recently introduced CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus.  After all, a picture (or in this case a short video), is worth more than a thousand words, or so the saying goes.

The New for 2019 PNSO Ceratosaurus “Nick” Compared to the CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus Figure

Comparing the PNSO Ceratosaurus to the CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus

In this short video (it lasts a little over thirty seconds), we compare the PNSO Ceratosaurus dinosaur model with the CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Ceratosaurus, which itself is a sizeable dinosaur replica.  The CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus is a recently introduced model, it only came out last year.

To read about all the new for 2018 CollectA Deluxe prehistoric animal models: CollectA Deluxe Figures Introduced in 2018.

However, the CollectA figure is dwarfed by the impressive and enormous PNSO Ceratosaurus.   The PNSO replica is one of the largest theropod figures that we have ever stocked.

Our PNSO Ceratosaurus Dinosaur Model “Nick”

Tale of the Tape – Ceratosaurus Dinosaur Models

The CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus is not a small dinosaur model by any means, but in our video, it looks tiny compared to the colossal PNSO Ceratosaurus.  For the statisticians amongst us here are the model measurements:

  • CollectA Ceratosaurus – length 27 cm approximately with a head height of 12 cm.
  • PNSO Ceratosaurus “Nick” – length around 58 cm approximately, with a head height of about 26 cm.

Remarkably, the base for the PNSO figure is around ten times the size of the base associated with the CollectA Deluxe Ceratosaurus.

Ceratosaurus But Which Species?

A number of species have been assigned to the Ceratosaurus genus and it is difficult to decide which species these replicas represent.  For example, do they represent C. nasicornis or perhaps C. dentisulcatus?  Whatever the species epithet, both these models are most impressive, but the PNSO Ceratosaurus is going to need a lot more shelf space.

In terms of calculating a scale for the PNSO model, this is challenging.  The maximum size for Ceratosaurus is unknown with estimated lengths ranging from about 4.5 metres to excess of 6 metres depending on the fossil specimen and the species.  If we take the upper figure (six metres) and we estimate the length of the PNSO Ceratosaurus to be about sixty centimetres, then, based on this crude assessment, the PNSO figure is in approximately 1:10 scale.

JurassicCollectables Reviews the Kaiyodo Sofubi Toy Box T. rex “Classic Colouration”

A few days ago, JurassicCollectables posted up onto their excellent YouTube channel an unboxing video featuring a trio of tyrannosaur models that we, at Everything Dinosaur had sent them.  The narrator could hardly contain his excitement as he opened the box and unwrapped the three colour variants of the Kaiyodo Sofubi Toy Box T. rex.  In that short, unboxing video we were promised that each model would be reviewed at length in the near future.  True to their word JurassicCollectables have posted up a video review of the Kaiyodo Sofubi Toy Box Tyrannosaurus rex “classic colouration”.

A Video Review of the Limited Edition “Classic” Kaiyodo T. rex Articulated Figure

Inspired by the Artwork of Zdeněk Burian

In this video review (it lasts for a little over twelve minutes), the narrator discusses the packaging (this model comes in a special edition box) and points out the degree of movement afforded by the ten points of articulation.  This tyrannosaur is known as the “classic”, as the colour scheme chosen for this figure was inspired by the highly influential Czech painter and illustrator Zdeněk Burian.

The recently reviewed Eofauna Scientific Research Giganotosaurus (G. carolinii), makes an appearance and helps to provide a size comparison with the Kaiyodo figure.  In addition, JurassicCollectables uses a Papo green standing T. rex model to help to give an impression of the figure’s size.  Naturally, off-colour Alan gets involved too and the narrator comments that when the Kaiyodo Sofubi Toy Box T. rex is placed next to the Alan Grant action figure, it looks like a juvenile T. rex.  This is highly appropriate as a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex is referenced in the original Jurassic Park novel by Michael Crichton.

Beautiful Background Provided in the Presentation Box

The narrator comments upon the beautiful background image provided in the special presentation box and reflects on the skilful craftmanship and the care taken to produce the stunning paint scheme and the graceful airbrushing.   The mouth and jaws (the figure has an articulated upper jaw), are singled out for special praise.

Designing New Dinosaur Models is Rewarding Work

By |2023-11-30T15:06:49+00:00March 5th, 2019|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Designing Dinosaur Models

Designing dinosaur and prehistoric animal models is a tricky business.  With the advent of three-dimensional printing technology and modelling software, things have got a little easier but there is still all the work involved in creating prototypes, mould building and so on.  Today, we feature the Kaiyodo Sofubi Toy Box T. rex figure, a dinosaur model that was developed to demonstrate how scientific thinking regarding the stance of theropod dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex has changed over the last hundred years or so.

The Japanese model maker Kaiyodo has employed state-of-the-art modelling techniques to produce fantastic, highly collectable dinosaur models and figures.  The design team excelled themselves when developing a collectable figure with ten points of articulation.  Many models have an articulated lower jaw, but for the design team at Kaiyodo, doing the ordinary was out  of the question, in their limited edition T. rex Toy Box figures, they opted for an articulated upper jaw instead.

Articulated Dinosaur Models

There has been a trend in recent years for dinosaur models to have articulated jaws and front limbs.  One of the benefits of an articulated jaw for example, is this feature does permit collectors to be able to close the mouth of their figure.  Many theropod dinosaur models tend to depict these animals with their mouth open, not a natural pose at all.

Most tetrapods don’t walk round all day with the jaws wide open.  It is the lower jaw that is articulated in the vast majority of these figures. However, in order to demonstrate their engineering credentials, the design team at Kaiyodo gave their Sofubi Toy Box T. rex an articulated upper jaw (premaxilla and maxilla), as demonstrated in this short forty-five second video.

From Kangaroo to a Balanced See-saw

When first scientifically described, Tyrannosaurus rex was illustrated as a biped whose tail dragged on the ground.  The articulated tail of the Sofubi Toy Box T. rex permits the model to displayed in this position, a pose described as a “kangaroo pose” or sometimes a “kangaroo stance”.  However, the ingenious engineering allows this figure to be displayed in what is thought to be a more anatomically accurate pose, with the centre of balance over the hips and the tail lifted off the ground – a sort of pose described as a “balanced see-saw”.

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World T. rex Dinosaur Model (2019)

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World T. rex Dinosaur Model (2019)

Tyrannosaurus rex may have been formally named and described more than 100 years ago, but this iconic dinosaur has certainly not lost any of its appeal since Henry Fairfield Osborn’s scientific paper (1905).  The “tyrant lizard king” remains as popular as ever with casts of skeletons adorning many natural history museums and no dinosaur movie seems complete without an appearance or two of a T. rex.

The Enduring Popularity of Tyrannosaurus rex

For dinosaur fans and prehistoric animal model collectors, there are a plethora of T. rex figures to collect and most manufacturers carry at least one replica of this, perhaps the most famous of all the dinosaurs, within their ranges.  Today, we take a look at just one recently introduced figure, that of the 2019 Wild Safari Prehistoric World T. rex made by Safari Ltd.

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World T. rex Dinosaur Model (2019)

Wild Safari Prehistoric World T. rex Dinosaur Model

A lot of print space has been devoted to trying to explain this carnivores’ enduring popularity.  In the 2019 Safari Ltd catalogue there are no less than five Tyrannosaurus rex models within the Wild Safari Prehistoric World range and that does not include the baby dinosaurs in eggs.  The most recent figure was introduced a few weeks ago (see picture above), this has led to some speculation that a number of the older figures in this range will be withdrawn.

Measuring around seventeen centimetres in length and with that powerful head standing some eleven centimetres off the ground, this is not the largest T. rex figure available, but as with all the models in the Safari Ltd portfolio, it is well painted and has lots of fine detail.  The figure has already attracted a 5-star review on the Everything Dinosaur website.

Safari Ltd have taken some beautiful photographs highlighting the exquisite details on their prehistoric animal models.  We intend to post these pictures up onto our social media platforms as they permit model collectors the opportunity to see more than just the standard figure studio shots.  Perhaps the photographs will inspire collectors to take their own pictures showcasing their very own “Jurassic Park”

JurassicCollectables Reviews the Eofauna Giganotosaurus

Eofauna Giganotosaurus Reviewed by JurassicCollectables

Hot on the heels of several Schleich new for 2019 model reviews, JurassicCollectables have posted up a video of the new Eofauna Scientific Research Giganotosaurus dinosaur model.  The narrator correctly surmises that this is the first dinosaur figure to be introduced by Eofauna and the Giganotosaurus is heralded as being one of the most scientific accurate dinosaur models to have been made.

Exclusive Behind the Scenes Images

As Everything Dinosaur works closely with Eofauna Scientific Research, we were able to provide the JurassicCollectables team with exclusive images showing the three-dimensional skeletal reconstructions that the designers at Eofauna created in order to help ensure the accuracy of their figure.  Osteological measurements were taken in order to build up the muscles and the skin texture.  The wrinkles on the dinosaur model reflect how this Cretaceous hypercarnivore would have actually moved.

A “Boxer’s Chin” and the Correct Size of Scales

In this short video (duration just under nine minutes), the narrator opens up the plastic bag containing the model and the proceeds to take the viewer on a guided tour of the figure.  The close-up views of the articulated jaws and the inside of the mouth are particularly well done.  Everything Dinosaur team members pointed out to JurassicCollectables that if the lower jaw is viewed from the side, the tip of the jaw is thicker and more robust.

We have nicknamed this characteristic of Giganotosaurus anatomy the “boxer’s chin”.  Not that this dinosaur indulged in pugilism, however, this thickened bone may have evolved to help protect the rest of the jaw from impact damage as this predator lunged and attacked its prey.

Eofauna Giganotosaurus Video Review

In the video review, JurassicCollectables note the care and attention taken over getting the scales on this dinosaur to look right.  In the section of the video that focuses on the ribs, viewers will note the very fine scales with just the occasional, larger rounded scale on the model picked out, these scales are most prominent on this part of the figure.  As the replica has been designed based on a 3-D simulation, Eofauna have been able to add lots of wrinkles and folds to depict movement, at the back of the femur (thigh area) for example, these are once again highly accurate based on the skeletal assessment.  Such features are skilfully highlighted in this excellent video review.

JurassicCollectables have a wonderful YouTube channel dedicated to prehistoric animals and dinosaur models.  Everything Dinosaur recommends that fans of dinosaurs subscribe: Subscribe to JurassicCollectables on YouTube.

Comparing the Eofauna Giganotosaurus to Other Eofauna Figures

During the video review, the two other Eofauna figures, the Steppe Mammoth and the Straight-tusked Elephant are introduced and provide a size comparison with the Giganotosaurus.  Naturally, off-colour Alan also gets involved.

JurassicCollectables Reviews the Schleich Animantarx

Schleich Animantarx Model Reviewed by JurassicCollectables

The latest video to be produced by those creative people at JurassicCollectables features one of the new for 2019 Schleich prehistoric animal figures – the Schleich Animantarx.  The Animantarx is described as adorable and as it represents an armoured dinosaur that grew to a length of approximately three metres.  The model works well in scale with JurassicCollectables regular “off-colour Alan”, who makes an appearance towards the end of the review.

The JurassicCollectables Video Review of the Schleich Animantarx Dinosaur Model

An Adorable Schleich Animantarx

The narrator describes this model as an “adorable Animantarx” and it certainly has an appeal.  The figure is nicely proportioned and the wet-looking gloss added to the black eyes provides this replica with a certain charm.  It is described as “a cute looking dinosaur” and it is hard to disagree.

The “Adorable Animantarx” Dinosaur Model from Schleich

Animantarx

The narrator correctly points out that this member of the Nodosauridae family was named and described relatively recently (1999).  It is known from very fragmentary fossils, including a partial skull and a piece of fossilised jaw.  This dinosaur had a distinctive domed skull and tiny horns behind the eyes.  Features that can be seen in the close-up view of the head in the picture above.  It is this attention to detail that elevates this armoured dinosaur model.  Clearly, the Schleich design team have worked hard to produce a model that reflect scientific understanding.

The model may have flaws, but as the narrator points out, there is much to be admired when it comes to examining the dermal armour, the skin tones and the detailing of the body scales.

Comparing Schleich Prehistoric Animal Models

One of the great benefits of a JurassicCollectables video review is that it enables viewers to see up close a new figure and to compare it to other recent model introductions.  In this video review, the new for 2019 Schleich Spinosaurus figure is shown and the 2019, re-painted Dimetrodon makes an appearance.  Both the Dimetrodon and the Schleich Spinosaurus have also been recently reviewed on the JurassicCollectables channel.  As mentioned earlier, “off-colour Alan” appears in the video as well.  It is always a pleasure to see “off-colour Alan”.

Dimetrodon and Giganotosaurus (Schleich) Reviewed by JurassicCollectables

Those talented people at the JurassicCollectables YouTube channel have released another video, this time, it is a review of two of the new for 2019 Schleich prehistoric animal figures, both re-paints, the Schleich Giganotosaurus and the Schleich Dimetrodon.

New for 2019/New Colour Schemes

Both these figures are new colour schemes of previously introduced sculpts.  Providing re-painted versions of existing models can help to broaden a product range and provides a contrast to previously introduced figures.  For example, the new for 2019 Schleich Giganotosaurus has an altogether darker colour scheme than the Schleich Giganotosaurus (orange) that was launched in 2015.  The narrator points this out and goes on to provide a detailed analysis of the subtle use of airbrushing as well as commenting upon the darker colour palette associated with the skull and the airbrushing to bring out the textures in the neck.

In the Video Review, the Darker Tones of the Giganotosaurus Colour Scheme are Commented Upon

Five New Schleich Prehistoric Animals

The Giganotosaurus and the Dimetrodon are two of the five new Schleich prehistoric animals to be introduced in the first part of 2019.  We will post up details of other Schleich models due to be introduced in July, but for the meantime, dinosaur fans have a Spinosaurus, Dimorphodon, an armoured dinosaur (Animantarx) and these two prehistoric animals to collect.

The Schleich Dimetrodon (2019)

Dimetrodon seems to be a staple in prehistoric animal model ranges and is often described incorrectly as a dinosaur.  However, this Permian predator from Schleich is praised by the video narrator for its excellent airbrushing and fine detail, especially on the sail.  The texture on the animal’s flank and the carefully painted eyes are highlighted.

JurassicCollectables have a long history of producing dinosaur model reviews, they suggest that the colour scheme for the new for 2019 Dimetrodon reflects the original “Jurassic Park” Dimetrodon model that was introduced in the 1990s.  The narrator comments that the figure has been painted in naturalistic colours, reminiscent of many living lizards.

“Hurricane” – Rebor Hatching Baryonyx

There have only been a 1,000 of these models made and the narrator begins the video by highlighting the box and the packaging.  Comments are made about taking care when it comes to removing the model out of the protective foam.  Those beautifully sculpted claws on this substantial figure might catch and get damaged, so the narrator emphasises the need to take care when opening the box and taking out the model and its accessories for the first time.

Why Hurricane?

At Everything Dinosaur, we have been asked why does this dinosaur figure have the nickname “Hurricane”?  Baryonyx (B. walkeri) is known from sediments that were deposited in a low-lying, flood plain environment.  When Baryonyx roamed that part of the world that we now know as the Isle of Wight, for example, large rivers meandered slowly eastwards to the sea.  This location would have been subjected to tropical storms and hurricanes from time to time and such events would have had a devastating effect on the environment.  Dinosaurs like Baryonyx would have had to endure such violent weather, so the term “Hurricane” is appropriate.  However, there is another reason for this Rebor figure’s nickname…

Dinosaurs and a Famous English Football Captain

“Hurricane” honours Harry Kane, the Tottenham Hotspur and England forward.  Harry Kane is the current captain of the England football team and he helped England reach two semi-finals in 2018.  Hence this football themed dinosaur replica from Rebor, it celebrates England reaching the World Cup semi-final as well as their qualification for the semi-finals of the inaugural UEFA Nations League.

A Detailed Video Review of the Rebor Hatching Baryonyx

In the detailed video review, the narrator comments over the subtle use of a wash that gives the replica a wet look, just like a newly hatched animal.  The shape of the egg is discussed and how to position it on its base is demonstrated and JurassicCollectables comment on the delicately shaped and realistic looking vegetation that is included with the figure.  Off-colour Alan makes his customary appearance and the recently reviewed Schleich 2019 Spinosaurus is included so that viewers can gain an appreciation as to just how big this hatching Baryonyx actually is.
