Dinosaur Dino-opoly Featured in National Women’s Magazine

The November edition of “Prima” – a women’s magazine with a strong practical content featuring crafts, cookery, fashion and beauty as well as shopping tips and ideas, carried a feature on Dinosaur Dino-opoly.

In an article, which featured on the “Family Notebook” page of the magazine, the top five suggested family games for Christmas were reviewed.

Lovely to see Dino-opoly given the number one spot.

This is what the reviewer said:

“Have hours of fun with Dino-opoly (age 7 and up), a prehistoric version of a classic family board game.  Players can buy their favourite dinosaur, collect bones and trade them in for museum exhibits.”

It certain is a twist on the traditional family board game, there is even a quick 1 hour whizz round the board version.  The best thing of all is that it provides children with lots and lots of facts and information about dinosaurs, helping them learn.

Megalodon Makes its Debut – A New Shark Model

By |2024-04-02T21:30:24+01:00November 5th, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Carcharodon megalodon Makes its Debut

At Everything Dinosaur we get lots of requests for our team members to find unusual prehistoric animals through our “Dino Hunt” service.  Customers and prospective customers can e-mail us with requests to help them find a particular model or item for their collection or to satisfy the curiosity of a young dinosaur fan.

With our connections to manufacturers and our links to a number of museums and other educational bodies, we can help out most of the time.  This can save our customers, a lot of time and effort.

Model of Megalodon

We have received over the last twelve months or so Dino Hunt requests to help people find a suitable model for a Megalodon, a giant shark that lived during the Miocene and Pliocene periods (about 16 -1.6 million years ago).  In response to these requests we did some research into shark models in order to try and find a Megalodon model to add to our range.  Unfortunately, at this moment in time, there are no specific Megalodon models widely available so we changed tack and began to look at models of modern shark species in order to find a suitable alternative.

We had no idea how many model sharks were out there!  However, drawing on the expertise of our contacts with museums – particularly helpful were our friends in the educational department at the Royal Tyrrell museum – Canada; who advised us and supplied us with our own Megalodon cast tooth.

A short-list of potential candidates was drawn up including the Great White Shark model from the Sea Animal series of Schleich of Germany and the Wild Safari Dinos Megalodon shark model.

Megalodon Alternative – Schleich Great White Shark

A model of Megalodon – a giant prehistoric shark.

The model displays the five gill slots, so typical of a modern shark species and the appropriate layout of fins that Megalodon is believed to have had.  The aggressive posture is a nice touch, particularly for an animal calculated to require about ten percent of its body-weight in food each week, just to keep going – no wonder it ate whales!

To view the model Megalodon: Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Models.

Prehistoric Shark Colouration

The colouration is also important, like modern Great Whites, this animal was an active predator of surface waters, its large eyes supplemented the other senses that sharks have to help close in our prey.  The white underside would have made it difficult for mammals to spot this huge predator if it was swimming above them.  The white markings would have made it blend into to the sun dappled surface waters.  The slightly curved posture of the model mirrors a big shark’s swimming style accurately and we liked the little touches such as the strongly forked tail and the darkened tips on the pectoral and caudal fins.

Carcharodon megalodon, is sometimes referred to as Carcharocles megalodon, as this animal had a skeleton made of cartilage few elements of the body have been preserved, but we have plenty of teeth – form the large, broad daggers of the anterior dentition to the smaller posterior teeth to be found at the back of the mouth.  It is estimated that estimated had about 290 teeth in its jaws.  Like dinosaurs these teeth were replaced constantly, with new ones erupting from the jaws as older teeth were broken and worn down.

This giant shark, estimated to reach lengths of perhaps 16 metres or more was named from its spectacular teeth.  Carcharodon megalodon means “sharpen, huge tooth”.  Scientists still debate whether this animal was very closely related to modern Great White sharks, or whether it shared a common ancestor.  Some marine biologists see Megalodon as being more akin to the Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier).  Like Great Whites, Tiger sharks are solitary hunters, palaeontologists believe that adult Megalodons were also solitary.

The Tiger shark was named in honour of Georges Cuvier, the great French naturalist.  The Tiger shark is the only member of the genus Galeocerdo, it has been given a separate classification because of its strangely shaped, heavily serrated teeth.  The fossil teeth of Megalodon resemble very closely the teeth of a modern Great White, this is why some scientists classify Megalodon with the Great Whites (Carcharodon carcharias).

However, the teeth may be similar as these two animals shared a similar lifestyle and the dentition may be an example of parallel evolution and not indicate that these two genera were closely related.

Slightly worryingly, especially for all those surfers and divers out there, a small group of dedicated cryptozoologists believe that Megalodon is not extinct and that populations are still roaming the oceans of the world today.  However, most scientists doubt this; believing that the sightings are possibly over-sized Great Whites or figments of people’s imaginations.

As the Coelacanths have proved anything is possible…

Please note, since this article was first published there has been a revision of the taxonomy of this extinct shark.  The consensus is to refer to this shark as Otodus megalodon.

Being a dinosaur!

Dinosaur Foam Masks

The face masks are made from flexible foam and are held onto the face securely by a piece of elasticated string.  There are six different masks to choose from, each one representing a different dinosaur.  We were even able to get a pink horned dinosaur face mask, especially for the girls.  As they are flexible the masks are suitable for a variety of different age groups, although we would not recommend as being suitable for children under 36 months.

These items would make a colourful yet inexpensive addition to a party gift bag and most certainly will prove popular at parties as well as being ideal as a stocking filler or for use in schools for teaching, playtime and theatre activities, they are wonderful dinosaur masks for children.

New Information About the Postal Workers Industrial Action (United Kingdom)

By |2024-04-01T10:14:07+01:00October 4th, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

The Postal Strike – what can we do about it?

Today, Thursday 4th October marks the start of a prolonged period of industrial action by the Royal Mail postal workers.  They are in dispute with management over pay and reforms to the postal service.

Industrial action has been going on for some months, with different parts of the network going on strike at different times.  This strike action starting today is a 48-hour walk out of all staff.  Another 48-hour strike is planned for Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Postal Workers Industrial Action

Unions are in last minute talks with management to try to avert this action and bring about a settlement, however, the team at Everything Dinosaur has already put in place plans to cope with deliveries whilst this industrial action takes place.

Firstly, we will be sending out parcels this morning, we have arranged with the Post Office service team we use to get customer’s parcels to a local depot in time for a late morning collection.  At least items ordered this morning and last night will start their journey.

Secondly, staff have agreed to work late Friday to permit us to prepare and pack parcels so that we can despatch on Saturday morning, after the first strike action has taken place.

Arrangements in Place

We have in place arrangements to permit us to take advantage of any unscheduled collections that may take place with the second period of strike action next week, our good working relationship with the local Post Office staff has enabled us to take advantage of any opportunities to get parcels out as and when they occur.

We have also introduced recently a discounted courier service.  This subsidised courier service (signed for 3-day parcel service) covers a very large part of the UK,  more information can be found on the relevant section of the Everything Dinosaur web page:

Delivery options: Everything Dinosaur Delivery Options.

Sue and her team are also actively exploring offering a second discounted courier service from a subsidiary of DHL, this parcel delivery service is being considered so that we can offer a permanent alternative to Royal Mail.

Be assured we will do all we can to prepare and pack parcels quickly and get them despatched in a bid to minimise any delay.

Everything Dinosaur Helpful Postage Saving Rates

By |2024-04-01T10:14:40+01:00October 2nd, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Thoughts turn towards Christmas – saving Customers Postage

Just 84 days to go before the big day – Christmas.  My how the time flies, it hardly seems five minutes since Christmas last came and went.  We still have lots to do before the end of the year and as you can imagine the period up to Christmas tends to be the busiest for us in terms of mail orders. Here is a quick guide to the postage saving rates that Everything Dinosaur offers.

Everything Dinosaur

Hopefully, this year will be better than ever for us, we have had a lot of interest from consumer magazines wanting to feature our products and services in their Christmas gift guides.  It is always nice to get some publicity, we work very hard on our customer service and this time of year is when things really begin to pay off.

Everything Dinosaur Works with Several Major Parcel Companies Including Royal Mail

Royal Mail Logo 2022 postage saving rates

Everything Dinosaur team members have taken steps to help minimise disruption for customers, but due to industrial action UK and overseas deliveries of parcels will be subject to delays. Picture credit: Everything Dinosaur.

One thing we have been very conscious of is the recent increases in UK postage costs.  Whilst Royal Mail and the Post Office still represent excellent value for money, over the last 18 months or so there have been price increases on first class, second class and Royal Mail parcel service.

Delivery charges are based on the weight of the goods ordered. At Everything Dinosaur we don’t believe in charging excessive fees for postage and shipping.  Where possible we try to subsidise delivery charges offering a discounted courier service (signed for 3-day parcel service) for deliveries to the UK mainland.

For orders totalling more than £25.00 Everything Dinosaur offers subsidised delivery:

– the Saver Rate for orders between £25.00 and £49.99 parcel service just £4.94

– the Super Saver Rate for orders over £50.00 parcel service just £6.94

Postage Saving Rates

Our shipping and postal charges are calculated on the Royal Mail, Parcel Force or Carrier service rates, depending on the most appropriate and cost effective service for delivery of goods. We do add a small fee onto the cost of each transaction to cover packaging, packing and handling, however, we do subsidise customer’s delivery costs by offering these additional postal options.  As a business made up of teachers, parents and dinosaur experts we decided that offering short-term promotions and gimmicks wasn’t really for us.  We just worked out a way of saving customers money and offered it, it was as simple as that.

Orders received by 1pm are usually despatched on the same working day. Orders placed on a Saturday/Sunday will be despatched on the next working day. To assist with the rapid turnaround of orders; we pack and despatch orders on Saturday mornings.  Delivery times given are estimates only and cannot be guaranteed, but we really do try to turn around orders quickly.  In the event, that ordered items are out of stock, a member of staff will always contact customers to confirm a delivery date.

UK Deliveries
For deliveries within the UK, customers can choose which carrier service they would like to use – First Class, Second Class, Standard Parcels service or a discounted Courier service (signed for parcel service).  To help save customers postage; Everything Dinosaur has introduced two additional UK postage rates.  For orders between £25.00 and £49.99 a subsidised postal service – the Everything Dinosaur Saver Rate; charging just £4.94 for delivery.  For orders over £50.00 Everything Dinosaur offers a further subsidised postal service – the Super Saver Rate; charging just £6.94 for delivery.

The Everything Dinosaur Saver Rate and the Super Saver Rate are available for UK retail deliveries only, our aim is to deliver within 3-5 working days.  The maximum weight of parcel for this service is 20KGs.

Subsidised Courier service (signed for 3-day parcel service) covers mainland UK and southern Scotland only, for any other UK areas please contact Everything Dinosaur for advice:

Unique 2008 Dinosaur Calendar for Young Palaeontologists

By |2024-04-01T10:17:00+01:00September 28th, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

The Everything Dinosaur Calendar for Young Dinosaur Fans

As Christmas is getting nearer and thoughts turn to the end of the year, it is time to introduce the Everything Dinosaur Calendar for 2008.  The calendar is now available, inplenty of time for Christmas orders.

Everything Dinosaur Calendar 2008

This Dinosaur calendar features illustrations and dinosaur facts produced by the team of dinosaur enthusiasts at Everything Dinosaur in association with American illustrator Mike Fredericks.

No one really knows what colour dinosaurs were as colour does not fossilise in bones.  Palaeontologists have to work out what colours they think these prehistoric animals were.  Now it is your turn!  Using the scientific drawings of famous dinosaurs such as Ankylosaurus, Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex young dinosaur fans can colour them in and bring them back to life!

One dinosaur for each month of the year featuring animals such as Saltasaurus, Protoceratops, Brachiosaurus, Spinosaurus and Triceratops each illustration comes with scientific details to provide youngsters with more information on their favourite dinos.

The calendar makes an excellent Christmas present for budding palaeontologists, it will be available exclusively from Everything Dinosaur in plenty of time for Christmas.

Talking of time we are in the Holocene stage (means entirely recent), this segment of geological time began approximately 11,500 years ago and amongst other things it marks the ascent of man.

Dinosaur Pyjamas and Dinosaur Raincoats available from Everything Dinosaur

By |2022-10-31T17:50:44+00:00September 25th, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Dinosaur Pyjama sets and Dinosaur Raincoats for little Monsters!

Historically, the girls have always been given the casting vote when it comes to deciding about any dinosaur themed clothing that we stock at Everything Dinosaur.  The boys tend to defer to them when it comes to sorting out suitable ranges and stock lines.  They have been known to venture into clothing exhibitions and fashion shows but the sight of them wandering up and down the aisles in their big, heavy outdoor boots is enough to put even the most ardent exhibition manager off.

To read an article on one of the team member’s visit to a clothing show click here:  Dinosaurs at the Fashion Show.

However, the girls have come up trumps again and we have just introduced a range of Dinosaur pyjamas plus a new raincoat for budding palaeontologists.

The pyjamas are made from 100% cotton and have proved to be a big hit with dinosaur fans, the samples we had in the Summer and the reaction to them have convinced us to add these items to our range.  They are pyjama sets, consisting of a trouser with a colourful dinosaur pattern and a top which has a dinosaur applique motif on the chest.  The caption on the top says “PJ Rex” we won’t get to fussy over the scientific accuracy of the theropod featured on the motif, or in the way that the manufacturers have misappropriated a species name by giving it a capital letter, but we will heartily recommend them.

To see the range of dinosaur and prehistoric animal themed items in stock at Everything Dinosaur: Everything Dinosaur’s Website.

Pyjamas are available in age ranges 3 to 7 years with chest sizes from 21 inches.

The Dinosaur raincoats are a real find, we have had lots of enquiries and I know that Sue and Margaret have been busy looking at a number of options and testing out ideas.  These hard-wearing, durable raincoats are made from 100% waterproof polyurethane with a terry cotton lining (78% cotton, 22% polyester).  They have a hood to keep the rain off and the coat has a colourful dinosaur pattern on it with lots and lots of dinosaurs (and the odd flying reptile).  There are even two front pockets for young palaeontologists to keep their fossils in.  We had a lot of fun deciding which prehistoric animals were represented in the artwork, there is a real mixture with Stegosaurs, Spinosaurs, lots of other meat-eaters but our favourite is the blue coloured Ornithomimid with orange spots – wonderful!

The raincoats will be available in age ranges 3 to 6 years with chest sizes from 31 and 3/4 inches.  Lets hope it rains!

Everything Dinosaur and Shopping Portals

New website – Shopping Portals

Saturday morning saw everyone at Everything Dinosaur working as usual sorting out orders, despatching parcels and devising the running order for our new 2008 calendar (coming soon, we promise)!  We had a team meeting and amongst matters debated such as the expected shipping dates for our new clothing range and the organising of our blackberry picking expedition (more of this in a later blog); an e-mail that we had received was discussed.

Everything Dinosaur

The e-mail had been received late on Friday night (14th September), it was from a gentleman based in Northamptonshire (East Midlands of England) stating that he had linked our website to the dinosaur page on his shopping site.  The site aims to provide a resource for busy people to find on line toys and gifts under one electronic roof as it were.  Our IT expert calls this a shopping portal/shopping directory and although the site is relatively new, it has already built up an impressive list of mail order businesses.

I suppose it makes sense to include Everything Dinosaur if you are going to create a dinosaur page on a site such as toy-shelf.co.uk.  After all, we are a company that specialises in prehistoric animals and with staff that are parents, teachers and dinosaur experts we certainly fit the bill.

We are very lucky to get registered on a lot of directories and shopping portals, we are a very credible company that has been around for a number of years and with all the new products, our blog and the new websites we are planning our online presence is growing all the time.

A New Shopping Portal

This new website heralds from Northamptonshire.  This county, situated in the middle of England has a fascinating geology.  Underneath towns such as Daventry and Northampton there may well lie the remains of dinosaurs, many of them totally new to science.  There are also likely to be a number of marine reptile fossils lying under the ground awaiting discovery.  The truth is Northamptonshire has some remarkable geology.  Much of the underlying and exposed strata is sedimentary rock albeit mixed in with a good deal of Quaternary (late Pleistocene) glacial melt water deposits and alluvial concentrations in the Nene valley in the direction of the Wash basin.

The majority of the sedimentary rocks found in the county date from the Jurassic period (208-144 mya), including rocks dating from the lower and mid Jurassic.  For most of this time, the land that was to become Northamptonshire was underwater, it was covered by a shallow sea.  Overtime as sea levels rose and fell (transgressive phases), the influence of river deltas and the deposition of sediments from the land was felt.  These sediments make up part of the great Jurassic belt that runs from Dorset in the south to Cleveland in the north, but unfortunately so far no noteworthy dinosaur fossils have been discovered.  If we do find any dinosaur fossils in strata such as the lower lias (dating from the early Jurassic) then they are likely to represent new genera as the fossil record for this particular part of the Mesozoic is very poor.

Finding Dinosaurs

Finding dinosaurs in Northamptonshire could be tricky, as the geology represents a predominantly marine environment.  Dinosaurs were purely terrestrial so unlikely to swim far out to sea and end up deposited as bones ready to be fossilised in the middle of the sea – but many dinosaur fossils have been found in marine sediments.  For example, on many of our visits to our chums at Charmouth and the Visitor Centre on the Jurassic coast we marvel at the remains of several scelidosaurs that they have.  This little armoured dinosaur lived in the early Jurassic and is only known from fossils recovered from in and around the Charmouth area.  Although very much a “land-lubber” it seems that flood events occasionally washed animals and carcases out to sea and this is how a small, quadrupedal, herbivore was found in these marine sediments.  Only eight Scelidosaurus fossils are known in the world, all of them having been found within one mile of the Charmouth visitor centre.

So for the people of Northamptonshire, you never know what might be lying just underneath the top soil in your garden!
