New Schleich Dinosaur Models now in Stock

By |2023-02-13T20:35:38+00:00September 12th, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

New Parasaurolophus, Tyrannosaurus rex and Stegosaurus models

The new Schleich dinosaur models have arrived and are now in stock.  The German manufacturers Schleich have recently started a revamping programme to update a number of their existing models and to introduce several new ones over the next few years.

Schleich Dinosaur Models

The three new additions to the Saurus range are Parasaurolophus, a Stegosaurus and a traditionally posed Tyrannosaurus rex.  The kangaroo posture for the T. rex (tail on the ground) was introduced for this model to mark the 100th anniversary of the naming and describing of this huge carnivorous reptile.  The model pays homage to the early interpretations by Brown and the famous illustrators such as Knight and Zallinger who helped popularise dinosaurs with their wonderful artwork which adorned many children’s books.

The Three new Saurus Series Dinosaurs

Each beautifully hand-painted model comes with its own Everything Dinosaur fact sheet and the detailing is up to the high standards expected of Schleich.  The skin textures are based on real fossil evidence and the colouration is based on scientific theory and interpretation.  Hence the blood red plates on the Stegosaur and the spotted coat of the Parasaurolophus (excellent camouflage in woodland habitats).  Parasaurolophus may have inhabited more forested areas than other hadrosaurs such as Corythosaurus.

Palaeontologists studying the Campanian deposits of the Dinosaur Provincial Park formation have noted that a greater proportion of Corythosaurus remains have been discovered compared to animals such as Parasaurolophus.  This could indicate that corythosaurs inhabited areas close to rivers and lakes (areas where fossilisation is more likely to take place), whereas Parasaurolophus may have preferred drier woodland habitats.  One theory about the unusual shape of the Parasaurolophus head crest is that it may have been used as a type of “plough” pushing branches out of the way, to help the animal move through forests.  It is because of this theory that the spotted coat has been painted, a coat such as this would have provided excellent camouflage in such environments.

New Prehistoric Fact Finder – Test your knowledge on Prehistoric Animals

By |2023-02-12T08:52:46+00:00September 1st, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Explore and Learn all about Prehistoric Animals

Back in the spring we were advised about a new product being introduced into the UK, a double sided wheel that when turned revealed prehistoric animal facts and figures.  The product was to be called “Prehistoric Fact Finders” and the information on the 40 or so animals featured had been vetted and verified by Dr Paul Barrett of the Natural History museum – London.  We know Paul quite well as he has worked on a number of merchandise projects for the museum, including the Natural History museum models.  We thought this type of item would be a useful addition to our dinosaur books inventory.

Prehistoric Fact Finders

The Fact Finder is sealed inside a sturdy, robust clear plastic cover and the facts are revealed by turning the wheel.  The front image is dominated by a mosasaur with an elasmosaur and ichthyosaur swimming in the background.  On the land a Triceratops is carefully watching a group of pterosaurs including a rhamphorhynchoid.  Clearly this illustration is not prehistorically or palaeontologically accurate, it merely serves to illustrate the range of animals covered in the fact finding disc.  We loved the placoderm, seen swimming in the bottom of the picture.  The placoderm and the marine reptiles make strange bed fellows with much of the Devonian, the Carboniferous, the Permian and a good deal of the Mesozoic separating them in reality.

Still, at list the artist has been consistent, the back illustration features a tyrannosaur and several dinosaurs more suited to the Jurassic than the very end of the Cretaceous.

Prehistoric Animals

Putting aside the artistic licence the fact finder certainly delivers what it promises in terms of providing facts about prehistoric animals.  There is a wide range of animals featured, the well known ones but also some of the more unusual and less common such as Amargasaurus (a titanosaur from South America) and Bambiraptor (the only dinosaur we know that was named after a Disney character).

By moving the wheel young dinosaur fans can learn about each animal in turn.  Facts such as the correct pronunciation of the scientific name (a godsend to all parents), what the name actually means, where the animal lived and at what time in geological history.  The Fact Finder also provides information on the size of the animal, plus what it ate and a section providing further information.  The thumbnail illustration of each creature featured gives a good impression of what the animal looked like.

Favourable Reviews

The team at Everything Dinosaur received samples a few months ago, these were tested in our usual way with readers of prehistoric animal books and books about dinosaurs and the results were very favourable.  It is amazing how many snippets of information the manufacturers have crammed into the space.  We were asked to produce a report and make some recommendations which we duly did.  With members of our team actual teachers they were interested in how this product could be used in classroom exercises.  By covering up the facts it could be used to set animal quizzes and the wheel did provide an insight into animal diversity and evolution.  Children were keen to use it and the carefully crafted mix of scientific terms helped get across some basic concepts as well as assisting with their reading skills.  Best of all teacher, could secretly “crib up” on the prehistoric animal information in the hope of being able to keep up with their charges.

Girls like Pink, Boys like Blue – Why? Because we Evolved this way According to New Research

By |2024-04-01T09:59:21+01:00August 21st, 2007|Categories: Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal News Stories, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Why do Girls like Pink?

The colour preferences of men and women may seem like an unusual subject to merit serious scientific study, but new research published today from Newcastle University points at girl’s preference for pink being as a result of our biological and evolutionary programming.

There may be an evolutionary advantage in the old adage of “pink for a girl and blue for a boy”.  Tests results produced by the Newcastle University team and re-printed in this month’s edition of the magazine “Current Biology” show that women have a strong preference for red tones.  Using a representative group the researchers recorded people’s reactions to a series of flash cards that were shown to them.  Blue proved to be the most popular colour amongst the men and women test subjects but real differences between the sexes showed up when reactions to different hues and blends of colours were tested.

Girls Like Pink, Boys Like Blue

Whilst the male subjects showed no real preference for different hues and tones shown to them across the colour spectrum, women overwhelmingly plumped for the red end of the red-green colour spectrum.  The differences between the sexes in the results recorded were so significant that just by analysing the data produced; the research team were able to accurately predict the sex of the respondents.  Chinese subjects were also included within the study, in a bid to remove any possible cultural differences in colour preference, but their results were in line with the overall findings.  Females preference for the red spectrum seems to go beyond cultural and nurturing influences.

The research, led by Professor Anya Hurlbert says more about Homo sapiens, than females liking for reds, pinks and lilacs.  Their love of the red spectrum may influence the clothes they wear and the colour of their handbags but this fascination may go deeper and reflect an important evolutionary trait of our ancient ancestors.

Colour Preferences Have Ancient Origins

As hunter-gatherers, a long held view is that the women took on the role of finding food whilst the men were the hunters.  Certainly, there is strong evidence to suggest that our brains are wired differently to assist with these tasks.  We have only to look at what goes on in our company; Everything Dinosaur; to see evidence of this.  For example, the girls are better able to remember where things are kept in the warehouse.  Perhaps this is a manifestation of their evolutionary trait of being able to remember where to find food sources as they wandered around the Pleistocene landscape.  Or perhaps it is because they are just cleverer than us boys!

Prehistoric women who were able to find ripe fruits would have been greatly appreciated by the other  members of the tribe.  In nature, the colour red is often an indication of ripeness and readiness to eat, so being able to see reds well may have been a significant evolutionary advantage.

At Everything Dinosaur we too have found that females have a strong preference for pinks and lilacs.  We recently introduced a range of dinosaur themed items especially for girls.  Their preference for the colour pink was reflected in our choice of products and helped in the design of things like the Utahraptor soft toys (they have a pink crest on them).

Some of the Everything Dinosaur – “Pink Influenced Products”

We introduced a special range of products in recognition of the need to get more young girls interested in science.  Girls as well as boys seem to be fascinated with dinosaurs, although strangely when we carry out our prehistoric animal surveys dinosaurs such as Triceratops and Stegosaurus seem to be more popular amongst the girls than the boys.

Dinosaur Models: Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Models.

At the time we thought this was just a cultural thing, but perhaps the work of nurture rather than nature but Newcastle University have revealed that this perceived colour preference is a much more deeper held belief.

We have written about the Dinosaurs for Girls in two previous blog posts to read them click here:

Dinosaurs for Girls (Part 1).

Dinosaurs for Girls (Part 2).

So there you have it, the next time you see a woman in a pink top, or a girl with a pink teddy bear you are not observing a modern cultural phenomenon but you may be looking through a window into our own past and catching a glimpse of an affinity for a colour that may have led to the survival and eventual success of our species.

New Discounted Postal Deliveries from Everything Dinosaur

By |2023-02-13T09:47:28+00:00August 16th, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Three new Postal Services to help reduce UK Delivery Charges

At Everything Dinosaur we constantly try to improve our customer service, we are fortunate to receive a lot of very favourable feedback from our customers but we have been aware of rising UK postal charges.  Over the last 18 months there have been three separate price increases from Royal Mail and a change in the pricing structure to pricing parcels on size as well as weight.   The Royal Mail and the Post Office (we have fantastic help and support from our local Post Offices and their staff), still represent good value but we wanted to help customers further and provide more choice when it comes to UK delivery options.

Everything Dinosaur Introduces New Discounted Shipping Rates

Everything Dinosaur

At Everything Dinosaur we don’t believe in charging excessive fees for postage and shipping.  The team come from a variety of backgrounds be they parents, teachers or palaeontologists, looking on-line there are a number of companies that offer special monthly promotions on postage and other delivery gimmicks.  We started a project back in the spring to review delivery options and to see if we could find a better way to support our customers.

Special offers and such like, we felt, were not really for us.  One minute they are there and the next gone.  We wanted to offer genuine discounts and support.  A lot of different pricing models and ideas were tested, Sue as the financial brains behind the company was given the final say so, after all there would be little point in offering a fantastically quick and heavily discounted delivery service if we were no longer in business to provide it!

Multiple Shipping Options

As well as offering Airmail, Surface Mail and Parcel Force services to our international customers we have increased the choices customers have for UK deliveries.

At the moment, UK deliveries can be sent by First Class, Second Class, or Standard Parcel Service.  Where possible we have tried to subsidise delivery charges offering a discounted courier service (signed for 3-day parcel service) for deliveries to the UK mainland.  This service can delivery parcels in about three days and requires a signature for receipt of the delivery.  This is operated via a courier company and provides an additional option for customers who might request larger items being delivered to a work address or school for example.

Courier service (for UK mainland and southern Scotland) is priced at just £7.99

New Saver Rates and Super Saver Rates Introduced

In addition, we have introduced two new subsidised UK postal options for orders totalling more than £25.00.

The Saver Rate and the Super Saver Rate (not the most catchy of names we have to admit but these are the best that we could come up with – not bad for teachers, parents and palaeontologists).

These two new services will work like this; our postal charges are based on Royal Mail, Parcel Force or Carrier service rates, depending on the most appropriate and cost effective service.  All the postage options available to customers are displayed by our clever computer systems when placing an order.  Simply tick the box for the service that you require.  As well as having all the existing options, UK deliveries will be able to take advantage of these discounted postal services.

– the Saver Rate for orders between £25.00 and £49.99 delivery charge is just £4.94

– the Super Saver Rate for orders over £50.00 delivery charge is just £6.94

Working Hard for You

We continue to work very hard to ensure goods are despatched efficiently and promptly, this is Everything Dinosaur customer service.  We still check by hand all mailing addresses and orders received by 1pm are usually despatched on the same working day. Orders placed on a Saturday/Sunday will be despatched on the next working day. To assist with the rapid turnaround of orders; we pack and despatch orders on Saturday mornings.  Delivery times given are estimates only and cannot be guaranteed but we do try our best. In the event, that ordered items are out of stock, a member of staff will contact you to confirm a delivery date.

We think these new services represent genuine discounts and will help safeguard customers from rising postal prices.  Naturally, we will continue to review our pricing policies and monitor the situation but rest assured we will always strive to improve our customer service.

The UK’s most Popular Prehistoric Animals

By |2023-02-13T09:52:26+00:00August 13th, 2007|Categories: Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Tyrannosaurus rex is UK’s Most Popular Dinosaur

We tend to get asked to do some odd things from time to time.  Yesterday some of the team were helping out at a maize maze, today we are working on a press release at the request of our PR agency.  This release is a little different as it is aimed at a radio station which periodically broadcasts unusual and bizarre lists.  We have been advised to contact the station and submit the results of our prehistoric animal popularity survey.  We gather lots of information from children about their favourite dinosaurs and such like so we gave it a go.

Underneath is the text of the release, with the top five animals from our survey.  We put in the pronunciation as we were mindful that this was an item aimed at broadcast media.

Our Media Release

Tyrannosaurus rex is UK’s Most Popular Dinosaur Tyrannosaurus rex (pronounced tie-ran-oh-sore-us rex) is the nations favourite dinosaur, although Velociraptor (pronounced vel-oss-see-rap-tor) is rapidly catching T. rex up according to a survey published by Cheshire based Everything Dinosaur, the specialist educational toy company.

Using information gathered from dinosaur drawing workshops with schoolchildren, as well as product sales and viewings from the company’s website: Everything Dinosaur, a top ten list of popular prehistoric animals has been compiled.  Not surprisingly, the ferocious Tyrannosaurus rex tops the chart but the much smaller; Velociraptor is gaining in popularity, with strong showings from other family favourites such as Stegosaurus (ste-go-sore-us) and Triceratops (try-sera-tops).

“Velociraptor was quite small by dinosaur standards, it was no bigger than your average Christmas turkey. The only difference being that with its sharp teeth and vicious sickle-like claws, if it was around today we would be the ones on the Christmas dinner menu”; commented Mike, one of the team members at Everything Dinosaur.

Mike’s passion for palaeontology, the study of ancient life, first took hold, when as a nine-year old, he learnt about these animals and saw fossils put on show in the school science display cabinet. Encouraged by his teachers, Mike began his own fossil collection and retained an interest in the subject throughout his school years. Now Mike and his team are able to help spur on the next generation of young scientists.

Popular Prehistoric Animals

To set up the company, research was undertaken to identify educational games, models, toys, posters and gifts related to palaeontology and geology, getting back to what the procurement team referred to as “kitchen table activities”, with Mums and Dads involved helping to build models, construct kits and galvanise youngsters enthusiasm.

UK’s Most Popular Prehistoric Animals

1).  Tyrannosaurus rex (always likely to be number one).

2).  Velociraptor

3).  Triceratops (proved to be very popular with the girls)!

4).  Stegosaurus

5)  Allosaurus

To conclude our release to the radio station we wrote a short letter to accompany the release and included a Tyrannosaurus rex soft toy.

By |2024-04-01T09:44:05+01:00August 10th, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Why not try Dinosaur this Christmas?

The Christmas market is vital to retailers such as ourselves.  Fortunately, our good record on customer service has stood us in good stead but this year we have employed a PR agent to help promote Everything Dinosaur at Christmas.  We have devised a strategy working in conjunction with our PR contact (Amy) and she has written a press release for us.

Everything Dinosaur Press Release

If you are looking for a Christmas gift which is big on fun and makes prehistoric times bang up to date, then a website all about dinosaurs Everything Dinosaur website is the perfect place to explore for dinosaur toys and games..

From the adorable cuddly Woolly Mammoth Mum and Baby to the clever Dinosaur Excavation game to the fascinating and educational posters there is truly something for everyone, of all ages.  And if you need to give Santa a hand to fill stockings, then take a look at Dino erasers, Dinosaur pens or the fantastic value Woodencraft Velociraptor.  It’s enough to make you want to flatten bushes by swishing your tail with excitement!

Maybe there is a dinosaur for everyone?  An inflatable Tyrannosaurus rex will add “roooar” to a children’s party or bedroom, whilst little sister will love the pink Diplodocus t-shirt.  Creative family members or friends will really enjoy the Mould & Paint Dino or the Dinosaur Paper Mache kit.  For the person who loves an unusual gift, why not surprise them with a Mammoth Skull kit or the replica tooth from a Sabre Tooth cat!

Dinosaur Toys and Gifts

The Dinosaur Toy Carrier/Tidy is ideal for little hands and makes keeping things in one place easy whilst gift cards and wrapping paper are the perfect finishing touch all year round.

End of Press Release …. however, we have been busy supporting the PR campaign with some additional releases of our own.  Working closely with the PR agent this has helped stretch our budget a little further.

Producing a Press Release

Writing a press release can be a bit of a challenge but here are some tips on how to go about it.

1).  Explain in the first paragraph what the release is all about.

2).  Use a headline and double space the article (this helps editors).

3).  Research your target publications (Hollin Press Guide found in most libraries is a good place to start).

4). Consider the audience you are writing for – write for the reader.

5).  Type “Ends” at the bottom.

6).  Include a image low res for e-mail but contact details of member of staff who can provide high res 300 dpi print copy if required.

7).  Put a release date on it.

8).  Include a “for further information contact”  details.

9).  Don’t mither the editor, we find that a follow up phone call is not always needed.  Editors and Feature Editors are busy people.  If you have sent in a press release they will know what to do with it.

10). Set up a system to monitor coverage received.

Last but not least don’t forget the embarrassing staff picture (seems like a prerequisite for us)!

The End of Everything Dinosaur’s First Week of Blogging

By |2022-10-26T10:45:19+01:00June 1st, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Press Releases|0 Comments

Blog Update from Everything Dinosaur

The end of our first week as bloggers at Everything Dinosaur has come.  We may be new to web logs and such things but we are slowly and surely getting used to the idea of writing this blog. Our aim is to write articles about new dinosaur and other fossil finds, updates on palaeontology and other aspects of research in a straightforward and hopefully uncomplicated manner.  We also intend to update readers on the progress made by our company “Everything Dinosaur” and to keep people informed about animal news stories from around the world that catch our interest.

As a small team made up of teachers, parents and dinosaur enthusiasts we have decided to split the workload between us and we do intend to try to blog everyday.  However, no promises, as answering emails from customers, helping teachers TAs (teaching assistants), HLTAs (higher learning teaching assistants) and such people must take priority.

Exciting Plans for the Everything Dinosaur Blog

Helping to keep visitors safe and secure (HTTPS).

The Everything Dinosaur blog site has HTTPS.  We have plans to post up an article every day.

Our blog site will also help us to keep our fans and customers up to date with new model releases, product reviews and other items of interest related to our growing company.  This site will also provide an excellent platform to enable our members to discuss dinosaur toys and dinosaur models.

Everything Dinosaur – our New Company Web Log

By |2023-11-23T10:34:28+00:00May 27th, 2007|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Welcome to the Everything Dinosaur Blog

Everything Dinosaur is a small, British company that was set up on 1st August 2005, we sell dinosaur and prehistoric animal themed games, dinosaur toys, models, posters and clothing to help young people learn more about science through their fascination with these creatures.

Here is a link to our company website: Everything Dinosaur

Our company is made up of parents, teachers and dinosaur enthusiasts and we spend our time helping to motivate young people to learn more about science as well as helping collectors source models, providing information, quizzes and all kinds of stuff to do with dinosaurs.

Everything Dinosaur is certainly a very unusual company, in the 665 days since we started the business we have learnt a lot, even having been nominated for a business award – Start up Business of the Year (we didn’t win but at least we were nominated).  As we are such a different organisation, after all there are not many people who can say they sell dinosaurs for a living, we have been asked to write a blog about our company and what we do.

This blog has a number of purposes:

To provide a diary of our day-to-day activities – what we get up to running our unusual company.

To act as a source for more information and a forum on dinosaurs/prehistoric animals for our visitors, customers and such like.

To discuss/review new dinosaur models, dinosaur toys and other items being added to our product range.

To perhaps, through our scribblings and notes here to help encourage others to set up their own little businesses doing these that they enjoy too.
