Paleo-Creatures Moschops “Turntable Tuesday”

It is time to pop into the Everything Dinosaur studio to produce another YouTube video.  This week, it is the Paleo-Creatures Moschops model that is being put through its paces for our “turntable Tuesday” feature.  This is the first time that we have made such a video involving one of the prehistoric animal replicas from the Paleo-Creatures range.

A Paleo-Creatures Moschops Model

The Paleo-Creatures range features an array of incredible replicas, all designed and individually sculpted by Jesús Toledo, a very talented artist based in Spain. The Paleo-Creatures range includes dinosaurs and some of the more bizarre and astonishing animals from the fossil record, amazing creatures such as Moschops, a 1:20 scale figure of a therapsid, fossils of which come from the famous Karoo Basin of southern Africa.

The Paleo-Creatures Moschops figure is supplied with a display base, two plant accessories and a helpful bilingual data card (written in both English and Spanish).

An Exciting Range of Prehistoric Animal Figures

Each and every one of the figures in the Paleo-Creatures range has been individually hand-crafted.  Only a few of each type of model is produced at any time.  The beautifully detailed scale models represent a wide range of extinct creatures, including replicas from the Palaeozoic, such as the Late Permian Moschops, but also the likes of Aegirocassis, an Ordovician anomalocarid, the prehistoric shark Xenacanthus, the astonishing Tullimonstrum and the enormous arthropod Arthropleura.

New CollectA Rearing Diplodocus “Turntable Tuesday”

CollectA Rearing Diplodocus “Turntable Tuesday”

Another week, another “Turntable Tuesday” experience for a prehistoric animal model.  This time, it’s the new for 2020 CollectA rearing Diplodocus model going for a spin on the Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel.  This figure is a new colour variant (elephantine grey), of the original rearing Diplodocus figure that was introduced in 2013.  The beautifully painted sauropod has certainly proved to be a big hit with collectors.

The CollectA Rearing Diplodocus (2020) “Turntable Tuesday”

CollectA Rearing Diplodocus

In this short video, (it lasts a little under ninety seconds), we show the model in its rearing pose as well as balanced on four legs.  The CollectA rearing Diplodocus has been beautifully sculpted and it is so well balanced that the model stands on four legs as well as in its rearing pose.  The video also shows how well painted the figure is.  When the 2013 figure was released, it had a very different colour scheme, this new colour variant depicts the colossal Diplodocus in a colour scheme we describe as “elephantine grey”.

Many large terrestrial tetrapods such as elephants and rhinos tend to be a uniform grey in colour.  Whether large dinosaurs such as the sauropodomorphs shared this colour scheme is open to speculation, but the new 2020 rearing Diplodocus contrasts nicely with the earlier rearing Diplodocus figure.

To make this point about the colour scheme chosen for this new model, the Everything Dinosaur “turntable Tuesday” video does feature an elephant!

CollectA Age of Dinosaurs “Prehistoric Life”

Suitable for dinosaur fans and collectors aged three years and over, the Diplodocus stands around twenty-three centimetres high and it is one of the larger models in the CollectA Age of Dinosaurs, popular “Prehistoric Life” range.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We intend to produce at least one new video for the Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel each week.  Our idea for “turntable Tuesday”, is to post up a short video, which is less than two minutes in length that permits collectors and model fans to get a really good look at a prehistoric animal figure.  The turntable allows us to show the animal in three hundred and sixty degrees.  It’s a dinosaur review in the round, providing an all-round perspective.”

In this short video, (it lasts a fraction under one minute fifty seconds), the new for 2020 CollectA Baryonyx dinosaur model is highlighted.  The figure is mounted on a base so that the hind feet can be kept in proportion to the rest of the body.  The base itself shows some nice detailing, even a couple of leaves are depicted.  The base gives the impression that this dinosaur, associated with aquatic environments, is walking through soft sand or mud.

Turntable Tuesday – CollectA Deluxe Microraptor Dinosaur Model

It’s “Turntable Tuesday” and it is time to put another prehistoric animal model on the Everything Dinosaur turntable and give it a spin.  Today, we feature the awesome, new for 2020 CollectA Deluxe 1:6 scale Microraptor dinosaur model.

The CollectA Deluxe Microraptor is in stock at Everything Dinosaur, this fantastic, feathered dinosaur figure and the rest of the CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Life collection can be found here: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Life Models.

The CollectA Deluxe Microraptor Dinosaur Model

First named and scientifically described twenty years ago, Microraptor has become one of the most studied of all the Chinese dinosaurs from Liaoning Province.  It was the first dinosaur specimen found to demonstrate the presence of flight feathers on its hind legs as well as on its arms.  Three species have been assigned to this genus, although there is some debate as to their validity as separate species.  Microraptor fossils are the most abundant non-avialan dinosaur found in the Jiufotang Formation (Liaoning Province).

All the material comes from the same bedding plane – the Shangheshou Bed.  It has been estimated that over three hundred specimens have been collected to date, although it is difficult to verify this figure as a large number of specimens are in the hands of private collectors who are reluctant to come forward due to the difficulties that might arise once these fossils come to the attention of the Chinese authorities.

Iridescent Feathers and a Bifurcated Tail

In 2012, a scientific paper was published in “Science”, the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, that reported upon a study of fossilised pigment cells (melanosomes), preserved within a Microraptor fossil specimen (BMNHC PH881).  The researchers compared the arrangements of the melanosomes to those of extant birds and concluded that although Microraptor feathers were black, the melanosomes were reminiscent of the melanosomes found in birds that have iridescent feathers.

The scientific paper that proposes iridescence in the plumage of Microraptor “Reconstruction of Microraptor and the Evolution of Iridescent Plumage” by Quanguo Li, Ke-Qin Gao, Qingjin Meng, Julia A. Clarke, Matthew D. Shawkey, Liliana D’Alba, Rui Pei, Mick Ellison, Mark A. Norell and Jakob Vinther published in the journal Science.

In Everything Dinosaur’s short “Turntable Tuesday” video, these iridescent feathers on the CollectA Microraptor are highlighted.  In addition, the model also sports a bifurcated tailfan, as reflected in fossil discoveries.  It has been suggested that this tailfan structure and the iridescent feathers were primarily used for display.

CollectA Deluxe Fukuisaurus 1:40 Scale Dinosaur Model Reviewed

Team members at Everything Dinosaur have been busy preparing a bespoke video studio so that they can provide more in-depth video reviews for customers and fans of dinosaur model collecting.  The first full-length review of a dinosaur model has been published on the company’s YouTube channel.  The dinosaur model reviewed is the beautiful, new for 2020 CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Fukuisaurus.

CollectA Deluxe Fukuisaurus Video Review

In our short video we try to combine a little bit of the science behind the study of this Japanese dinosaur with comments about the CollectA Deluxe replica.  For example, we discuss the model and its quadrupedal stance but in reality this herbivorous dinosaur probably spent the majority of its time in a bipedal posture (the forelimbs were much shorter than the hindlimbs).  In addition, we comment on the beautifully painted mouth and beak of Fukuisaurus.  The video then provides information about the unusual anatomical features associated with the skull of Fukuisaurus.

The Fukuisaurus Video Review Provides Plenty of Close-up Views of the Dinosaur Model

A 1/40th Scale Model?

The video also provides the opportunity for the Fukuisaurus to be measured.  Viewers can see that the figure measures approximately 14 centimetres long.  CollectA have included this model in their CollectA Deluxe range and it is described as being in 1:40 scale.  However, team members at Everything Dinosaur advise collectors to take a more relaxed approach to stated scales when it comes to prehistoric animal models, especially dinosaurs.  Most dinosaurs are known from relatively scrappy and incomplete skeletons, therefore, it is often very difficult to provide accurate information about the size and weight of the animal.

In the Everything Dinosaur Fukuisaurus fact sheet that accompanies sales of this model, we state that Fukuisaurus (F. tetoriensis), was approximately 4 to 4.5 metres in length.  Based on these dimensions, we estimate that the model is in approximately 1:30 or 1:32 scale.

Our video review permits us to explain a little more about the size and scale of this dinosaur model.

Fossils Found in Close Association with Fukuiraptor (F. kitadaniensis)

The bedding plane from where the fossils of Fukuisaurus were found (the lower portion of Bonebed I at the famous Kitadani Quarry on Honshu Island, Japan), also contain the fossilised remains of a theropod dinosaur. This dinosaur is the similar-sized Fukuiraptor, which was actually formally described some three years before Fukuisaurus. The phylogeny of Fukuiraptor remains open to debate, although numerous vertebrate palaeontologists support the idea that Fukuiraptor was a member of the enigmatic Megaraptora clade.

Fukuiraptor may have hunted Fukuisaurus. In the Everything Dinosaur video review, the narrator comments upon this possibility and discusses the lack of evidence to support this notion.

The Pleurokinetic Skull of an Ornithopod

The dinosaur model video review also provides the opportunity to discuss some of the unique anatomical traits associated with Fukuisaurus.  Ornithopod skulls were remarkable examples of natural selection.  These dinosaurs evolved the ability to chew their food.  In order to process the tough stems of cycads, pine needles and horsetails, these dinosaurs evolved pleurokinetic skulls.  To process food in their mouths, the lower jaw moved up and against the inner surface of the teeth in the upper jaw, to produce a scissor-like cutting action.  To achieve this, the top part of the skull had to accommodate the movement of the lower jaw.  The skull could flex slightly in several places allowing the skull to be hinged (pleurokinetic joints).

In our video review, we discuss this and point out that the maxilla (part of the upper jaw), was closely associated with a facial bone in the skull.  This suggests that the skull of Fukuisaurus either could not flex, or that it was hinged in a different way to the skulls of related ornithopods.

The CollectA Deluxe 1:40 Scale Bajadasaurus (B. pronuspinax)

Bajadasaurus was only formally named and scientifically described in February 2019 (although the fossils were found back in 2010), we congratulate the design team at CollectA for being so quick off the mark when it comes to bringing out a figure representing a dinosaur that was described a little over a year ago.  It has been assigned to the Dicraeosauridae family of long-necked dinosaurs, although, these dinosaurs are characterised by their relatively short necks when compared to the related diplodocids such as Apatosaurus, Brontosaurus and Diplodocus.

A Bizarre Member of the Dinosauria

If the fossil material has been interpreted correctly, then Bajadasaurus was one of the most bizarre of all the Dinosauria known to science.  The model, and indeed the scientific illustrations of this prehistoric animal have been based on better-known dicraeosaurids.  The huge neural spines, associated with the cervical vertebra assigned to position C5 in the neck of this dinosaur, gave rise to the idea that each neck bone had a pair of enormous, keratin-coated spines which would have acted as a formidable deterrent for any meat-eating dinosaur looking for a meal.

CollectA Deluxe Fukuisaurus 1:40 Scale (Turntable Tuesday)

As Everything Dinosaur team members get better acquainted with the video management software and other technical aspects of the company’s small studio, we have opted to try and produce at least one dinosaur or prehistoric animal themed YouTube video a week.  With the arrival of a small turntable, we decided to start showcasing various dinosaur figures by producing short (around one or two minutes long), videos.  In this brief YouTube video, we highlight the new for 2020 CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Fukuisaurus dinosaur model.

Fukuisaurus – A Japanese Dinosaur

The CollectA Fukuisaurus model follows hot on the heels of the CollectA Fukuiraptor figure that was introduced in 2019.  Both dinosaurs are associated with the famous Kitadani Formation of Fukui on the Japanese island of Honshu.  The ornithopod Fukuisaurus (which was named and described in 2003) and the theropod Fukuiraptor, which was formally scientifically described three years earlier, come from the same bonebed in the Kitadani Dinosaur Quarry (Bonebed I).  It has been speculated that Fukuiraptor preyed upon Fukuisaurus, but there is very little scientific evidence other than the proximity of the fossil material to support this supposition.

CollectA Fukuisaurus and CollectA Fukuiraptor

Towards the end of this short video (it lasts a fraction over two minutes long), the CollectA Deluxe Fukuisaurus and the CollectA Fukuiraptor are shown together.  This permits dinosaur model fans and collectors to get a really good look at both figures.  Although the Fukuisaurus is part of the CollectA Deluxe range and it is in approximately 1:40 scale, as Fukuisaurus was a relatively small member of the hadrosaurid lineage, the actual dinosaur model is quite small.  Everything Dinosaur team members have measured the replica and it is approximately 14 cm long and stands around 5.5 cm high at the hips.

It is beautifully detailed and there is much to be admired in this CollectA figure (yes, we do point out in the video that this dinosaur model does have a cloaca).

A spokesperson for Everything Dinosaur commented:

“A lot of dinosaur model fans and collectors have asked us to make more videos about prehistoric animals, we are working hard to get up to speed and we do intend to produce another forty or so videos this year, including reviews of some of the new for 2020 CollectA models.”

The video lasts just under 90 seconds, but the use of the turntable enables dinosaur model fans to get a really good look at this exciting new figure.

The Protoceratops is the first figure to be introduced in this range and the dinosaur replica comes complete with a little model of a nest of dinosaur eggs.  The addition of the dinosaur eggs is very appropriate, as the discovery of nests of eggs in association with the fossilised remains of Protoceratops andrewsi demonstrated that at least some of the members of the Dinosauria laid eggs.  The Protoceratops dinosaur model measures around 6.5 cm in length and the tip of that bristle tail is approximately 3 cm high.

“The turntable permits us to display a model in such a way that viewers can get a really good look at the figure.  We can operate the turntable in either a clockwise or an anti-clockwise direction, so our YouTube channel subscribers have a 360˚ view of the prehistoric animal on display.  We intend to post up more videos providing previews of up and coming models in the future, after all, we have a lot of new dinosaurs coming into stock in the next two months or so.”

How to Assemble the Rebor X-REX (Broodlord)

How to Assemble the Rebor X-REX (Broodlord)

The 1:35 scale Rebor Broodlord figure, a cross between an alien and a tyrannosaurid, has wowed collectors and model fans.  It is the first of four figures to be introduced in this series.  A second Broodlord is planned, the second model will have an “organic” colour scheme.  The other two figures will be known as “Swarm” and just like Broodlord, two colour variants will be offered “plague” and “radioactive”.

In order to protect the carefully sculpted back spikes, the typically tyrannosaurid arms and that beautiful, intricate extended jaw, during transit, Rebor has not attached them to the replica, the model has to be assembled, but this does not take too long.  Everything Dinosaur has created a short video that explains how to assemble the model and provides a few tips and tricks along the way.

An Impressive Extra-terrestrial Figure

The model measures an impressive 43 cm in length and Broodlord stands around 14 cm high at the shoulders.  In our video, (it lasts a fraction over 9 and 1/2 minutes), we examine the model in detail, discuss the other figures in this xenomorph/tyrannosaurid line and explain how to fix the four back spikes into their slots behind the animal’s shoulders without them wobbling.  We also demonstrate how to insert the two-fingered, small arms and then we show how the top of a ballpoint pen can be used to help secure the jaw extension into the lower jaw.

Insert the Tail Before Adding the Arms

The narrator provides plenty of help and advice to assist with figure assembly.  For example, it is recommended that the tail is inserted in place prior to adding the arms.  To secure the tail requires a firm push and by not adding the arms you can give yourself a greater purchase on the body to help you ensure that the flexible tail piece is inserted neatly and securely into place.

It is fitting that we have made one of our longest videos featuring one of Rebor’s longest (if not the longest replica) produced by this exciting company to date.  This video is available on Everything Dinosaur’s YouTube channel, a channel dedicated to dinosaur and prehistoric animal model collecting.
