New for 2020 Papo Giganotosaurus (Sneak Peek)

Everything Dinosaur team members have been busy over the last few days posting up pictures of the new for 2020 Papo prehistoric animal models. They have featured the new colour variant feathered Velociraptor, Chilesaurus, the pachycephalosaur Stygimoloch, Megaloceros and have even made a short video featuring the new colour variant Parasaurolophus dinosaur model. The largest dinosaur figure to be introduced this year by Papo is the Giganotosaurus, naturally our staff have posted up plenty of pictures of this new replica too.

In addition, we have produced a short video on this new model, a dinosaur replica that has divided opinions. In our video (it lasts three minutes), we show the prototype production model and then discuss some of the features of this new sculpt.

How to Pronounce Giganotosaurus

Named and described in 1995, this South American theropod (Giganotosaurus carolinii), is regarded as one of the largest, if not the largest, meat-eating dinosaurs known to science. Whilst waiting for news of this Papo figure, our team members checked the correct pronunciation of the genus name. Thanks to the scientists who specialise in the Dinosauria from the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP), we can confidently state that the accepted scientific pronunciation is Gig-ah-note-oh-sore-us, think of terms like gigabyte or for that matter, gigametre.

The Papo Giganotosaurus – A Controversial Dinosaur Model

When the first images of this new model were released, the pose of this dinosaur attracted a lot of comments. In Everything Dinosaur’s brief video review, we look at the prototype figure and then discuss some of the other features of the sculpt, such as the detailed paint scheme and the quality of the skin tone and texture. The detail on the head of the dinosaur is remarked upon. The narrator comments on the skull shape and the attention to detail that can be seen in the depiction of the skull fenestrae.

New for 2020 Papo Parasaurolophus (New Colour Variant)

Fans of the Papo “Les Dinosaures” model collection may have a little while yet to wait for the new for 2020 prehistoric animal figures to become available. However, this does not stop Everything Dinosaur team members from posting up pictures and further information about these eagerly anticipated replicas. For example, recently a member of staff was able to get their hands on the new for 2020 Papo Parasaurolophus in the new “striped” colour scheme.

Plenty of pictures were taken, as our Facebook and Instagram followers will testify to, but we also shot a short video so that our customers can see the model in the “flesh” as it were.

This popular dinosaur is one of five new dinosaurs to be added to the Papo portfolio this year. Joining it will be Chilesaurus, Stygimoloch, Giganotosaurus and a new colour version of the feathered Velociraptor. The model is the same sculpt as the original Papo Parasaurolophus, but it has been given a striking makeover and the colour scheme chosen by the design team is vibrant and carefully thought through. For example, fossil specimens of Parasaurolophus spp. have been associated with forested environments, after all, these large herbivores fed on a variety of plant materials including conifers.

The striped markings on the flanks, legs and tail would have helped to camouflage this large animal as it moved through woodland (helping to break up its body outline).

In addition, this body pattern would also have given a degree of protection as the colour scheme can prevent a predator from selecting an individual to attack. Note also, the brighter colours associated with that splendid crest and the head/neck region. This is probably a nod towards the hypothesis that these social animals used colour cues to indicate maturity and social status within the herd.

Replacing the Early “Green” Papo Parasaurolophus

This new replica is replacing the original “green” Parasaurolophus figure in this range. Although team members at Everything Dinosaur have been able to secure some stock of the original Parasaurolophus model, so collectors can still acquire this figure.

The new for 2020 Wild Safari Prehistoric World Pachycephalosaurus model is a little bit special. Naturally, it is beautifully painted and an accurate depiction of a Late Cretaceous “bone-headed” dinosaur, but the design team at Safari Ltd have taken care to introduce an element of subtle “battle damage” to their figure. It is a case of a dinosaur model demonstrating some “pachycephalosaur pathology”.

A Pachycephalosaurus Model Demonstrates that Dinosaurs Had Tough Lives

In this short video, (it lasts a little over two minutes long), we show the model and provide close-up views of the brown mark on its skull. This is not a flaw in the particular replica we use in the video, to prove it we show another figure from our stock, with exactly the same feature. The design team at Safari Ltd have provided their Pachycephalosaurus figure with a little bit of “battle damage”, perhaps after a fight with another Pachycephalosaurus over social status in the herd, or perhaps in a dispute over food.

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Pachycephalosaurus model might have damaged his headgear whilst competing for females. After all, extant male red deer, the bucks, do damage their antlers in the autumn rut, when they are fighting to win the right to mate.

Stegosaurus armatus – Thank You Rebor

In December, Everything Dinosaur received stocks of the 1:35 scale Rebor Stegosaurus armatus dinosaur model. This beautiful figure is available in three colour schemes, “plain”, “woodland” and many team member’s personal favourite – “mountain”.

We had been asked to demonstrate how the tailpiece fitted into the model and we did produce a short video demonstrating how to insert the tail into the slot at the back of the figure, but we had more footage so we have posted up a slightly longer video that provides a little more detail about this excellent armoured dinosaur replica.

Providing More Information About the Rebor Stegosaurus armatus Figure

In this short video, (it is a little under one minute forty-five seconds in length), we show the “mountain” colour scheme figure as well as images of the two other colour variants “plain” and “woodland”. We comment on the tailpiece and demonstrate how to connect it to the body. In addition, we briefly discuss the fossil material that was once the type specimen for the Stegosaurus genus.

This fossil material was very incomplete, only the rear portion of the animal was preserved and only one iconic plate was found in association. The fossils once ascribed to S. armatus, were replaced as the designated type material for the genus by much more complete Stegosaurus stenops material in a ruling by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), in 2013.

We take this opportunity to thank Rebor for producing such an excellent dinosaur model.

Just before Christmas, Everything Dinosaur received stocks of the 1:35 scale Rebor replica Stegosaurus armatus. Dinosaur fans and model collectors will probably know that this figure is available in three colour schemes – “mountain”, “plain” and “woodland”. Since these exciting figures came into stock, Everything Dinosaur team members have posted up several pictures of these dinosaurs. Today, following a request from a Rebor collector, we have produced a short video which shows how to connect the tail to the model.

Rebor Stegosaurus Models – A Sixty Second Update

The video lasts approximately sixty seconds. The model is shown and the narrator explains how the figure is supplied (the tail piece can be found in the box, adjacent to the rest of the figure), then how the tail slots into the model is demonstrated. One firm push should do the trick, the tail fitting snuggly into the aperture. In the video, the flexibility of the tail is illustrated and compared to the neck which is also flexible.

A Guide to the New CollectA Models (Part 5)

Yesterday, Everything Dinosaur in collaboration with CollectA, announced the final five prehistoric animal models to be introduced by CollectA next year (2020). These figures include three invertebrates (two cephalopods and an arthropod), plus a bizarre pterosaur, one of the strangest of all the flying reptiles and a new colour variant of the popular rearing Diplodocus replica.

As with previous CollectA releases, we have produced a short video in which we discuss these five models in a little more detail.

CollectA Deluxe (Supreme) Caviramus Model in 1:2 Scale

The Pterosauria were the first vertebrates to master powered flight. These flying reptiles which have no close living relatives, were very strange animals, perhaps the most bizarre of all were the “campylognathoidids” – pronounced cam-pea-low-gnath-oi-dids, which are known from Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic strata.

Several genera have been assigned including Caviramus, but scientists are not sure where these types of pterosaurs fit into the Pterosauria family tree and indeed, how the genera within the Campylognathoididae family (also referred to as the Raeticodactylidae), are related to each other remains uncertain. All the fossil material known comes from northern Europe with one species described from Greenland. These were the first pterosaurs to demonstrate head crests as depicted on the CollectA Deluxe Supreme figure.

Caviramus (also referred to as Raeticodactylus), comes from Switzerland. It had large eyes, a curved lower jaw, that is reminiscent of these types of pterosaurs (the name campylognathoidid – is from the Latin for curved jaw), proportionately long legs and slender wings. Caviramus, with a wingspan of around 1.35 metres, is one of the largest representatives of this bizarre group.

The CollectA Deluxe Caviramus model measures around 32 cm long, it is referred to as a 1:2 scale model. The narrow jaw with its deep keel at the front, was lined by an assortment of teeth of several different shapes and sizes. What Caviramus ate remains a mystery but studies of the skull and jaws suggest that for such a small animal, it had a very powerful bite. Fittingly, this new for 2020 CollectA model will have an articulated lower jaw.

Amazing Arthropods and Cool Cephalopods

In line with CollectA’s policy of introducing more creatures from the Palaeozoic, a superb replica of a trilobite has been added to the range. Redlichia rex was only formally named and described earlier this year and it is the largest species of trilobite known from Australia to date. Two cool representatives of the Cephalopoda are also due out in the middle of 2020. Both are nektonic and predatory, but they herald from very different parts of the extensive cephalopod timeline. Nautilus pompilius can be traced back to the Pleistocene Epoch, whereas, the much larger and far more ancient Orthoceras is associated with the Ordovician-aged Baltic Sea limestones of Sweden.

All three of these beautifully sculpted replicas will be in stock at Everything Dinosaur by mid 2020.

CollectA Diplodocus – Grey

The final figure to be announced was the new rearing Diplodocus grey colour variant, which is due to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur early next year. At this time, Everything Dinosaur team members are not sure whether this figure will replace the original rearing Diplodocus model that came out in 2013. Naturally, if we receive information about model retirements from the CollectA ranges we will post this information up onto this blog and our other social media platforms.

The limited-edition Papo Spinosaurus dinosaur model is one of the most eagerly anticipated dinosaur models for years. Collectors and dinosaur model fans do not have much longer to wait as Everything Dinosaur expects to have this exciting, limited edition model in stock by around December 10th or thereabouts.

The box that this 42 cm long model comes in is huge! This box is far too large to be sent by airmail, signed or tracked and signed conventional international mail services. So, to help Everything Dinosaur’s customers overseas we are offering TWO purchase options:

Buy the model in its special edition gift box (fine for UK-based customers, but for customers overseas this would mean expensive postage).
Buy the model without the box, sending the model without the big, cumbersome box drastically reduces postage charges for our customers.

At Everything Dinosaur, we appreciate this postage dilemma, so team members are prepared to unpack the model for those customers who what to purchase it without the box. The model can then be sent out at a much reduced postage cost. It can be despatched by airmail and other postal services, such as the tracked and signed option (which we would recommend for this limited edition figure).

The model, although large, (that beautiful sail on the back stands some nineteen centimetres off the ground at its highest point), can be sent out on its own without the packaging using conventional international mail with Everything Dinosaur. If the model is taken out of its box and despatched, the overseas postage costs are very much reduced.

If the model is sent without the presentation box, it will be packed by Everything Dinosaur to ensure that the figure is protected and it will not have a product tag, this boxed model has no product tag associated with it.

With the mail services getting increasingly busy as we head towards the 25th December, customers can even message Everything Dinosaur when placing an order and let them know to delay sending out their parcel in order to avoid the risk of their purchase getting mislaid by the mail network in the Christmas rush.

Ensuring all the Cardboard and Plastic in the Presentation Box is Recycled

Everything Dinosaur is currently working towards 100% recycling of all wastepaper and cardboard at the company. This is a key component of our environmental policy. There is a lot of cardboard and plastic packaging associated with the Papo Spinosaurus presentation box. Customers can be assured that we have put in place plans to ensure that all the cardboard and plastic from any boxes that have had the model removed will be recycled.

We have had to commission a special box to accommodate all those customers who want to purchase the model within its presentation box (we show this new packaging in the video), as part of our environmental policy we have sourced this box from a supplier that has used 70% recycled cardboard in its construction. Only the facia elements are not made from recycled card, these in turn, have been produced from wood pulp from sustainable forests.

Yesterday, Everything Dinosaur in collaboration with our chums at CollectA, revealed the latest collection of prehistoric animal models for 2020*. CollectA Age of Dinosaurs – Popular Size Hunting Mapusaurus

The first model to be featured in this short video (it lasts a little over five minutes in length), is the only dinosaur figure announced in this batch, a replica of a hunting Mapusaurus. CollectA originally introduced a model of this giant, South American member of the Carcharodontosauridae (Giganotosaurini tribe), back in 2012. This model was subsequently modified and a base added. Already represented in the CollectA Deluxe range (a 1:40 scale Mapusaurus was added in 2018), the new hunting Mapusaurus model, which measures a fraction under 23.5 cm long, will be available from Everything Dinosaur in the middle of 2020.

CollectA Ammonite (Pleuroceras) and the CollectA Belemnite Model

Fossil collectors have two new models for 2020 to get particularly excited about. CollectA will be adding an ammonite model and a belemnite to their Age of Dinosaurs range. These two superb cephalopods help to demonstrate what the actual living animal looked like.

The CollectA Horseshoe Crab Model

The fourth replica that we discuss in our short video is the horseshoe crab replica. Everything Dinosaur will be stocking this fifteen centimetre long model of an ancient arthropod, often described as a “living fossil”.

Horseshoe crabs are fascinating creatures, despite their name they are not closely related to crabs, as members of the Arthropoda phylum they are more closely related to spiders and the extinct sea scorpions (eurypterids). All four living species are vulnerable to extinction due to loss of habitat, overfishing (they are caught and used as bait) and from the harvest of their blue-coloured blood which has medical applications. It is great to see a horseshoe crab model added to the CollectA range.

Eofauna Atlasaurus Features in Everything Dinosaur Video

Everything Dinosaur team members have been asked to post up some more images of the eagerly anticipated Eofauna Scientific Research Atlasaurus dinosaur model. This exquisite figure is the second dinosaur model to have been introduced by Eofauna, it follows the Giganotosaurus figure that came out earlier this year (January 2019).

We have posted up more pictures of this 1:40 scale replica, which is now in stock, both on this blog site and on our other social media platforms such as Pinterest and Facebook. However, we also shot a short video so that viewers could appreciate the size of the model and see the Atlasaurus data card and our fact sheet that accompanies sales.

Getting to Grips with the Eofauna Scientific Research Atlasaurus Dinosaur Model

The video is just under two and a quarter minutes in length, it is not really a review of the figure but we do highlight the paint scheme, discuss the anatomy of this bizarre sauropod and comment upon the beautiful, subtle osteoderms embedded in the back and the base of the tail. We also show the data card (as promised) and highlight the Atlasaurus fact sheet that we send out to our customers with their purchases.

Lighting Conditions Affect the Appearance of Replicas

An important point to note is that the lighting conditions under which a model is photographed or filmed will affect the way the model appears. Our film studio has no source of natural light, so if possible, we try and take some photographs of the model outside so that our customers can view the figure in natural light.

Even so, a photograph taken just minutes apart can provide an image that provides a different impression of the colouration of the model. For example, take a look at the picture (top) and contrast it with this view of the Atlasaurus model just a few moments later (below).

Surprise Unboxing – Everything Dinosaur

With the advent of the new Rebor GrabNGo range, team members at Everything Dinosaur thought it would be appropriate to send out some Rebor Komodo dragon models, the first model to be introduced into this range, to customers so that they could see for themselves the attention to detail and quality of manufacture.

Several unboxing videos and reviews are in the process of being posted up on social media, so today we thought we would feature one such unboxing video from the “Plastic Prehistorica” YouTube channel.

The video itself lasts for a little under six and half minutes and it documents the unboxing of the new Rebor 1:6 scale GrabNGo Komodo dragon model.

Commissioning Cardboard for the Rebor Komodo Dragon

The narrator points out the Everything Dinosaur had to commission special cardboard packaging to accommodate this new figure. The model measures nearly half a metre in length, so we worked with our packaging suppliers to create a bespoke box, one that was double-walled so that this beautiful varanid could be protected in transit. After all, we don’t want our customers receiving a Komodo dragon that has been damaged in the post. We do all we can to ensure that our customers receive parcels that are well packed and that the figures inside have plenty of protection.

As part of our environmental policy, all the cardboard boxes that we commission are made from 60-70% recycled material. Only the outer face of our cardboard boxes is made from new wood pulp, this in turn is sourced from sustainable managed forests.

An Unboxing Video

In the unboxing video, the narrator highlights the point that producing models of endangered animals helps to raise awareness about their plight. Everything Dinosaur has ensured that the current conservation status of the Komodo dragon has been highlighted in the company’s promotional materials. On the subject of materials, Everything Dinosaur is currently working towards 100% recycling of all waste paper and cardboard at the company.

The Rebor Komodo Dragon Could Also Represent Megalania

In this informative video, the narrator comments that this figure could also represent Megalania, a giant, extinct varanid known from the Pleistocene of southern Australia. The actual size of Megalania is disputed, however, size estimates based on fossilised vertebrae suggest a length of between five and seven metres for this lizard. If this is the case, then the Rebor replica would represent a 1:12 scale model or thereabouts of Megalania.
