In June 2015, the Everything Dinosaur Facebook page passed the landmark of 2,000 “likes”.  By early November 2017, this had been doubled to more than 4,000 and now we have had a fifty percent increase on this with an additional 2,000 “likes” added in less than fifteen months.

A representative from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“I would like to thank all our friends, followers, customers, dinosaur enthusiasts and collectors of prehistoric animal figures who have taken the time and trouble to visit our Facebook page and to give Everything Dinosaur’s page a “like”.  We really do appreciate this and, unlike some Facebook sites, all of our “likes” are genuine.  The increase in our page’s popularity has come from organic growth and not a single “like” has come from any form of paid for advertising and promotion.  We all feel very honoured.”

Feathered Theropod Models Triumph in Poll

By |2023-11-24T13:40:31+00:00March 4th, 2019|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

Feathered or Scaly Theropod Dinosaur Models?  The Results are In

Recently, Everything Dinosaur team members set up a poll on the company’s Facebook site asking dinosaur fans and model enthusiasts which they preferred, feathered theropod dinosaur models or models of theropods with scaly skins?

The results are in and in this particular survey it is the feathered theropod dinosaur models that have come out on top.  It’s a feather in the cap for feathered theropod model designers.

Which Type of Theropod Model do you Prefer – Feathered or Scaly?

Feathered Theropod models preferred over scaly-skinned Theropod models.
In Everything Dinosaur’s survey of dinosaur model preferences with collectors it was the feathered theropods that triumphed.  In this poll, 59% of respondents opted for the feathered dinosaur model option.

Theropod Models Reflecting Current Scientific Thinking

Step back ten years and virtually all the models of fearsome, carnivorous dinosaurs such as Allosaurus, Acrocanthosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex were entirely devoid of a feathery integument.  Many mainstream manufacturers still prefer to produce non-feathered figures, an example being Schleich of Germany.

Schleich Have Yet to Produce a Feathered T. rex Dinosaur Model

Other model manufacturers have chosen to reflect current scientific thinking and produce feathered theropod replicas, including fuzzy T. rex dinosaur models.  Schleich has moved towards introducing feathered theropods, a number of dromaeosaurids have been introduced into their range over the last few years with varying degrees of feathery integumentary covering.

A model of the Late Triassic, fast-running predator Tawa (T. hallae), which was introduced by Schleich in 2018, has a feathery crest on its head and a “tuft” of feathers on its tail.  The Schleich Psittacosaurus, a model of an ornithischian dinosaur, which was also introduced by Schleich last year, had feathers, reflecting the current scientific thinking.  In addition, the Oviraptor and the Therizinosaurus, both examples of theropod dinosaurs have feathers, perhaps it is just a matter of time before Schleich introduces a feathered Tyrannosaurus rex.

59% Versus 41%

In the Everything Dinosaur poll, 59% of respondents voted in favour of feathered theropod dinosaur models, whilst 41% stated that they preferred scaly theropod figures.  A big thank you to all those who participated.  We appreciate all the comments that were posted up and the “shares” of our Facebook post too.

The Bullyland Pteranodon sternbergi is in Stock

The Bullyland Pteranodon sternbergi is in Stock

The Bullyland Pteranodon sternbergi model is in stock at Everything Dinosaur.  Everything Dinosaur team members have been able to secure some additional models from a product line that was retired several years ago.  Limited numbers are available and staff have been busy emailing customers on our priority reserve list, letting them know that this flying reptile figure is available and that one has been set aside for them.

A Long Retired Bullyland Figure

A lot has happened since this excellent pterosaur figure went out of production.  The range of flying reptile figures has certainly increased but as far as we are aware, no mainstream manufacturer has introduced a P. sternbergi model.  A lot has also happened when it comes to research into the Pterosauria and the Pteranodon genus.  Although arguably, Pteranodon is perhaps the best known pterosaur, both with palaeontologists and the wider public, after all, there are in excess of 1,100 Pteranodon fossils in museums all over the world, there has been a dramatic revision of the fossil material ascribed to this genus.

Flattened Like a Pancake

Visitors to museums seeing a beautifully modelled Pteranodon replica, often dangling from the ceiling, can get the wrong idea when it comes to the fossil material associated with this genus.  The three-dimensional replicas do not portray the reality.  The vast majority of fossil material comes from the Pierre Shale Formation and the Smoky Hill Chalk member of the Niobrara Formation, both marine deposits and Pteranodon fossils tend to be crushed, highly fragmentary, distorted and flattened like a pancake.

Unloading a Pteranodon.
A life-size Pteranodon replica is unloaded.  Is this P. sternbergi or a representative of the genus Geosternbergia?  Although the fossil record of assigned Pteranodon material is extensive, the fossils tend to be fragmentary and crushed.

Geosternbergia sternbergi or Pteranodon sternbergi

The genus was erected back in 1876, when Othniel C. Marsh named Pteranodon longiceps.  Over the years, several species have been added to this genus, one of which was Pteranodon sternbergi, named in 1966 from fossil material found in 1952.  The species name honours the Sternberg family, who between them have made a tremendous contribution to North American palaeontology.

Such a high profile pterosaur genus with a wealth of fossils to study, has led to academics focusing on this genus and large numbers of scientific papers about Pteranodon have been produced.  Inevitably, numerous revisions have been suggested.  For example, it has been proposed that the fossil material represents a total of four different flying reptiles (Kellner 2010) and this led to the idea that P. sternbergi, was so different from P. longiceps that it should be assigned a separate genus.  Hence the use of the genus Geosternbergia (G. sternbergi) often regarded as a subgenus, in recent literature.

Much of the Revision of Pteranodontidae Fossil Material is Based on the Morphology of the Crest and Mandible

The Bullyland Pteranodon sternbergi model.
The shape and size of the crest and subtle differences in the mandible has led to a revision of Pteranodon fossil material.

In essence, over the period of time that the Bullyland Pteranodon sternbergi has been out of production, a revision of the fossil material has led to the placement of material formerly ascribed to P. sternbergi being assigned by some scientists to Geosternbergia.  The debate over the taxonomy of the pterosaur that honours the Sternberg family (and other Pteranodontia material), is likely to continue, at least, for the time being collectors have the chance to acquire the model.

The New for 2019 Papo Brown Running T. rex

The New for 2019 Papo Brown Running T. rex Dinosaur Model

The new for 2019 Papo brown running T. rex dinosaur model is now in stock at Everything Dinosaur.   This is the first of the 2019 prehistoric animal figures to be released by the French model and figure manufacturer.  It will be replacing the Papo running Tyrannosaurus rex (colour variant), which has now been retired, as announced in our blog post dated 15th December, 2018.  The figure is based on the same mould as the green running T. rex dinosaur model, but the colour scheme is different.

The green running T. rex figure was introduced into the “Les Dinosaures” range back in 2012 and Papo did make a limited edition brown running T. rex subsequently, but this was only in production for a few months.  Now the brown version of this popular figure has been included in the company’s catalogue and this figure will be more widely available.

Celebrating with a Short Video

This new dinosaur model has an articulated lower jaw and it measures more than thirty centimetres long.  The head stands an impressive thirteen centimetres off the ground.  Everything Dinosaur team members have produced a short video (around 45 seconds duration), to give our blog post readers an opportunity to get a better look at this exciting new model, the first of two tyrannosaurid replicas coming from Papo this year.  A Gorgosaurus model is due to be introduced in the summer.

Commenting Upon the Papo Brown Running T. rex Dinosaur Model

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Dinosaur model collectors have been lobbying Papo to bring back the brown coloured version of their popular running T. rex sculpt.  It is great to see this figure in the mainstream and available to a much wider audience than previously.  One caveat to sound though, we do not know how long this figure will be in production for, at least the model is included within the company’s model catalogue.  This catalogue is available from Everything Dinosaur free of charge, there’s just the postage to pay, collectors can see all the 2019 models, including the soon to be released Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, Pentaceratops and the eagerly awaited Gorgosaurus.”

A Short Video of the Schleich Diabloceratops Model

Everything Dinosaur have posted up a short video previewing the new for 2019 Schleich Diabloceratops dinosaur model.  This video is more of a teaser for fans of prehistoric animals and dinosaur model collectors.  In the video, we confirm the length of this figure (it is approximately sixteen centimetres long and those impressive horns are approximately eleven centimetres off the ground).

One of Four New Prehistoric Animal Models from Schleich in July 2019

The Schleich Diabloceratops will be replacing the recently retired Schleich Styracosaurus and the beautiful Pentaceratops figure.  It will be one of four new prehistoric animal models from Schleich due to arrive at Everything Dinosaur’s warehouse in July (2019).  The other figures are:

  1. Schleich Dracorex – a model of the “dome-headed” dinosaur Dracorex hogwartsia.  The Schleich Dracorex measures nineteen centimetres long and the head height is around ten centimetres.
  2. The Schleich juvenile Giganotosaurus – this figure has an articulated lower jaw and it measures around twenty-six centimetres in length and stands over ten centimetres high.
  3. Schleich Plesiosaurus – this marine reptile has a poseable neck and it is approximately sixteen centimetres long.

To read a brief article about the new for 2019 Schleich Plesiosaurus and to see a short video preview of this model: A Quick Look at the New for 2019 Schleich Plesiosaurus Model.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“The Schleich Diabloceratops model has certainly been getting a lot of attention.  Within the Schleich range of large dinosaur models, there is one chasmosaurine (Triceratops) and one centrosaurine which is the new Diabloceratops.  The two great tribes of Late Cretaceous horned dinosaurs are now represented by Schleich figures once again.  Diabloceratops may have been very distantly related to Triceratops, but they would never have met.  Diabloceratops lived millions of years before Triceratops evolved.”

A Preview of the New for 2019 Schleich Plesiosaurus Model

Schleich will be introducing four new prehistoric animal models in July 2019.  Today, we take a brief look at the only non-dinosaur figure to come out with this batch of replicas, the Schleich Plesiosaurus.  It had been rumoured that the German-based model manufacturer intended to produce a plesiosaur and thanks to Everything Dinosaur, we can now post up a quick video preview of this model that will be in stock in the summer.

A Short Preview of the New for 2019 Schleich Plesiosaurus Model

Four New Schleich Models

The four new Schleich prehistoric animal models scheduled to be released in July (2019) are as follows:

  • A juvenile Giganotosaurus.
  • A Dracorex.
  • The horned dinosaur Diabloceratops.
  • A Plesiosaurus (marine reptile).

Praising the Schleich Plesiosaurus

In the short video preview, a spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur comments on the unusual colouration on the top of the head of this figure, the dark blue markings have been described as looking like “goggles”, quite appropriate for an animal that spent much of its time under water.  It can be speculated that these reptiles had good colour vision and their heads may have played a role in visual communication. Crests or horns on the head would have affected streamlining so such ornamentation is not known in the Plesiosauria, so perhaps subtle markings on the head could have helped signal the maturity of the animal and its fitness for breeding.

Visit the Everything Dinosaur website: Everything Dinosaur.

A Plesiosaur Colour Scheme

The overall colouration of the plesiosaur model is also discussed.  The model is coloured a sky blue with flecks of white on the broad back.  This combines well with a paler underside which represents countershading, a concept long linked with extinct marine reptiles and seen in many marine mammals today.  The narrator in the video reflects on the fact that the colour scheme reminds him of polar conditions and states that as fossils of plesiosaurs have been found in high latitudes, such a colour scheme is appropriate as these reptiles are now known to have lived in cold waters.

A Model with a Flexible Neck

As with a number of earlier plesiosaur figures, the Schleich Plesiosaurus has a flexible neck.  This permits the neck to be placed in a variety of poses.  When tested the neck is quite stiff and this allows the figure to remain in the pose chosen without the head drooping down.  The Schleich Plesiosaurus will be in stock along with the three other figures (Dracorex, Diabloceratops and the juvenile Giganotosaurus), in July (2019).

CollectA Supreme Deluxe Caiuajara

Everything Dinosaur team members are preparing for the arrival in the next few weeks or so of the CollectA Supreme Deluxe Caiuajara pterosaur model.  This beautiful and most impressive figure of a Cretaceous flying reptile from Brazil is going to be one of the first of the new for 2019 CollectA figures that arrive in our warehouse.  As part of our preparations, team members have been busy researching and writing a fact sheet all about this weird and wonderful member of the Pterosauria.

A CollectA Speciality (CollectA Caiuajara)

Large replicas of pterosaurs are becoming a bit of a CollectA speciality.  When stocks of this 2019 figure arrive at our warehouse, it will be joining two other CollectA Supreme Deluxe pterosaur models.  CollectA introduced a 1:4 scale replica of a Chinese member of the Ornithocheiridae family – Guidraco back in 2015.  This was followed in 2017 by the award winning CollectA Supreme Deluxe Dimorphodon model.  All three models will have moveable, articulated jaws.

Pronouncing Caiuajara

When this pterosaur was formally named and described back in 2014, it caused quite a sensation amongst palaeontologists who specialise in studying the Pterosauria.  It is quite usual to have just a few fragments of bone to study, but in this case, the fossilised remains of more than forty individuals were recovered from a dig site in south-eastern Brazil.

This flying reptile had a remarkable crest, shaped a bit like the wing of a butterfly.  The fossil site was interpreted as a stop-over location as these animals migrated.  They were very competent flyers travelling great distances, so it is appropriate that the new for 2019 Caiuajara figure is travelling a great distance from the factory to our UK warehouse.

To read Everything Dinosaur’s 2014 article about the naming and scientific description of Caiuajara: New Species of Flying Reptile Identified from a Pterosaur Graveyard.

The fact sheet we are going to produce will also include a guide to pronunciation.  The genus name of this pterosaur is pronounced “Kay-you-ah-jar-rah”.  The CollectA Supreme Deluxe Caiuajara with moveable jaw measures around 19 centimetres in length and with that impressive and colourful crest the model’s height is about 23.5 cm.

We look forward to welcoming the CollectA Caiuajara model into our CollectA portfolio.

New Papo Gorgosaurus Previewed

Everything Dinosaur team members had the opportunity this week to view the new for 2019 Papo Gorgosaurus dinosaur figure.  As well as taking plenty of photographs, we were able to shoot a short video demonstrating that this dinosaur model stands on its hind legs and it does not need to balance on its tail in order to stand.

A Beautiful Model that is Beautifully Balanced

In this short video, we demonstrate that the Papo Gorgosaurus does not need to rest on its tail in order to balance.  This figure is one of five new for 2019 Papo prehistoric animal models, it should be available in quarter three of this year, perhaps around June/July .  It could arrive a little sooner, it could be in stock at Everything Dinosaur a little later.  At least our customers and dinosaur model fans have had the chance of a sneak peek of this new tyrannosaurid dinosaur figure from the French manufacturer.

New Papo Models for 2019

In total, five new figures are being introduced by Papo this year, there will (most likely), be a box set released in the autumn and we are already working on new for 2020 and 2021 production ideas.

The five new Papo models are:

  • Brown Running T. rex due into stock in a few days at Everything Dinosaur.
  • Papo Allosaurus (new colour variant), also due to arrive at Everything Dinosaur, in just a few days.
  • The Papo Gorgosaurus (see images and video), which is scheduled to be available sometime in quarter 3.
  • Papo Pentaceratops – also due to be in stock sometime in quarter 3 of 2019.
  • Stegosaurus, (new colour variant), this figure is also planned for launch in quarter 3 of this year.

Everything Dinosaur has also been made aware of a number of model retirements from the Papo “Les Dinosaures” range of figures.
