Everything Dinosaur Bringing in More Stock of Papo Models
Things may be very difficult for all of us at the moment as the UK and much of the world for that matter, progresses through the fourth week of lockdown. Everything Dinosaur’s work in schools has had to be postponed and all events and outreach activities cancelled but the company’s mail order operations continue to function.
Fortunately, team members became aware of the potential problems that a widespread outbreak of coronavirus might cause relatively early in the year, many weeks before the disease became a pandemic. As a result, Everything Dinosaur was able to put in place a number of contingency measures to help the company to continue working.
Papo Prehistoric Animals
For example, making commitments to stock earlier than normal and putting in place plans to hold various products in readiness to bring them into the company’s warehouse. These measures have helped Everything Dinosaur to maintain the availability of a number of ranges, such as the popular Papo prehistoric animals. Yesterday, the first of the contingency stock was made available to customers.

Seventeen different types of prehistoric animal model from the Papo range were brought into stock. All the individual prehistoric animals still available in the Papo range are now in stock at Everything Dinosaur. The only out of stock items are the retired Tupuxuara, some gift boxes and the small tub of Papo dinosaur models.
A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:
“These are extremely challenging times. Whilst we have had to suspend our work in schools, postpone events and all the outreach work that we had planned, we are still endeavouring to provide a degree of normality for our many thousands of customers all over the world. We are still able to offer a mail-order service to those consumers wishing to purchase items. We do appreciate the comments of many parents and grandparents that we have received who have been delighted that we are still able to provide them with the special dinosaur themed gifts for the birthday of loved ones. Many collectors are self-isolating and we do understand how indulging a hobby or an interest can provide a welcome distraction and aid mental well-being.”
The spokesperson added:
“We have been happy to set items aside, keep items back until mail networks become more stable, reserve products for customers and provide updated advice on the potential availability for new for 2020 items. Our team members have been doing all they can to advise and support customers.”

The six new for 2020, dinosaur models from our chums at CollectA feature in the latest Everything Dinosaur newsletter. Top of the bill, or should that be beak, is the stunning 1:6 scale CollectA Deluxe Protoceratops replica. This is a superb model of a plant-eater, that is amongst the most extensively studied of all the Dinosauria.

CollectA Deluxe Microraptor Model
Another Asian dinosaur from the Cretaceous also features, the beautiful Microraptor figure, which like the Protoceratops is also in 1/6th scale. This figure which measures around eighteen centimetres in length and has a twelve centimetre wingspan, has been sculpted at the request of a Chinese research institute so that they could use the model to help illustrate what Microraptor is believed to have looked like.

Two more CollectA scale models (CollectA Deluxe), feature in the latest Everything Dinosaur newsletter. There is the 1:40 scale Bajadasaurus a recently described dicraeosaurid from Argentina and the 1:40 scale Fukuisaurus, a model of a dinosaur that roamed the Early Cretaceous of Japan. As Fukuisaurus was about one/third as long as Bajadasaurus and considerably lighter, the CollectA scale model is a lot smaller, so for our newsletter readers we chose to pair the Fukuisaurus with the new Prehistoric Life Baryonyx dinosaur model.

New CollectA Dinosaur Models
Although the Baryonyx is not a scale model it does measure about four centimetres longer than the Fukuisaurus replica (eighteen and a half centimetres compared to the Fukuisaurus model length of around fourteen centimetres), this is because, in reality Baryonyx, just like Bajadasaurus, was a much bigger animal than Fukuisaurus.
Two Related Sauropods Feature in the Everything Dinosaur Newsletter

Although Bajadasaurus with its amazing forward facing neck spikes, looks very different from Diplodocus, these dinosaurs were related. The Dicraeosauridae family, to which Bajadasaurus has been assigned, is the sister family to the Diplodocidae and as such both dicraeosaurids and diplodocids were members of the superfamily Diplodocoidea.

Sending Out Mojo Fun Lucky Charms
Mojo Fun has produced a limited edition run of golden lucky rat key rings, to celebrate the Chinese year of the rat. In the Chinese zodiac, the rat is the first animal in the cycle of animals and the year of the rat represents a time for fresh starts and new beginnings. People born in the year of a rat are thought to be hard-working and industrious.
In Chinese astrology, those born in the year of the rat are diligent with a positive outlook on life. They also like to collect things and involve themselves with many interests and hobbies. Such a hobby might be prehistoric animal model collecting. Everything Dinosaur certainly has lots of customers in the Far East.

The CollectA Deluxe Microraptor Dinosaur Model
First named and scientifically described twenty years ago, Microraptor has become one of the most studied of all the Chinese dinosaurs from Liaoning Province. It was the first dinosaur specimen found to demonstrate the presence of flight feathers on its hind legs as well as on its arms. Three species have been assigned to this genus, although there is some debate as to their validity as separate species. Microraptor fossils are the most abundant non-avialan dinosaur found in the Jiufotang Formation (Liaoning Province).
All the material comes from the same bedding plane – the Shangheshou Bed. It has been estimated that over three hundred specimens have been collected to date, although it is difficult to verify this figure as a large number of specimens are in the hands of private collectors who are reluctant to come forward due to the difficulties that might arise once these fossils come to the attention of the Chinese authorities.

Iridescent Feathers and a Bifurcated Tail
In 2012, a scientific paper was published in “Science”, the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, that reported upon a study of fossilised pigment cells (melanosomes), preserved within a Microraptor fossil specimen (BMNHC PH881). The researchers compared the arrangements of the melanosomes to those of extant birds and concluded that although Microraptor feathers were black, the melanosomes were reminiscent of the melanosomes found in birds that have iridescent feathers.
The scientific paper that proposes iridescence in the plumage of Microraptor “Reconstruction of Microraptor and the Evolution of Iridescent Plumage” by Quanguo Li, Ke-Qin Gao, Qingjin Meng, Julia A. Clarke, Matthew D. Shawkey, Liliana D’Alba, Rui Pei, Mick Ellison, Mark A. Norell and Jakob Vinther published in the journal Science.
In Everything Dinosaur’s short “Turntable Tuesday” video, these iridescent feathers on the CollectA Microraptor are highlighted. In addition, the model also sports a bifurcated tailfan, as reflected in fossil discoveries. It has been suggested that this tailfan structure and the iridescent feathers were primarily used for display.

Everything Dinosaur and Fossil Workshops Postponed
The planned dinosaur and fossil themed workshops that were scheduled to take place this weekend (Saturday, 21st March, 2020) have been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. These events had proved to be extremely popular but with the growing concern over coronavirus, staff at Rochdale Borough Council responsible for the “Dippy the Dinosaur” exhibition, have reluctantly decided to postpone these workshops along with all the other related exhibition events and activities.
Fossil Workshops Postponed
Everything Dinosaur Was Conducting a Series of Family Themed Workshops and Other Activities
Everything Dinosaur’s dinosaur and fossil themed workshops planned for the “Dippy on Tour” exhibition have been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. Picture credit: Everything Dinosaur.
A statement posted on the Borough Council’s “The Dippy Experience” website explains the reasoning behind the suspension of planned events related to the dinosaur exhibition:
“In light of the current situation we’ve taken the difficult decision to suspend Dippy in Rochdale. The health and safety of our residents and visitors must come first and now is the time to take a pause. We will review the possibility of reopening Dippy on Tour in Rochdale in the upcoming months.”
A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:
“Families are at the centre of everything we do and this is particularly important during these challenging times. We have been monitoring the situation very closely and we fully understand and support the decision taken. The hands-on nature of our fossil handling activities would make operating the workshops extremely difficult given the current restrictions. However, we have moth-balled all the various activities that we had planned and prepared, these will be stored at one of our warehouses, so that before “Dippy” leaves the northwest of England, we could deliver the workshops we promised.”
A Chance to Reschedule the Dinosaur and Fossil Workshops
A spokesperson from Rochdale Borough Council thanked the team members at Everything Dinosaur for their efforts so far and stated that the Council would love to welcome Everything Dinosaur back, rescheduling later on in the year.
We shall see how things go, but dates in our busy diaries can be switched around and changed over to accommodate the eager young palaeontologists of the northwest of England.
Everything Dinosaur Continuing to Support Schools and Home Educators
At this time of uncertainty due to the coronavirus outbreak, Everything Dinosaur team members want to let you know how we are responding to the recent announcement about school closures. Our hearts go out to all those affected globally by the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. We are doing all we can to assist the education sector. Everything Dinosaur is currently operating as normal and we intend to provide regular updates in what is a very fluid situation. We are working very hard to limit the disruption to schools, nurseries and other academic bodies.
