PNSO Cameron the T. rex

William comments that the majority of the reconstruction of “Cameron” is based on a T. rex specimen known as “Sue”. This tyrannosaur fossil specimen is on display at the Chicago Field Museum (specimen number FMNH PR 2081). The lacrimal crests bear a resemblance to another T. rex specimen nicknamed “Stan”. The “Stan” specimen is formally referred to as BHI 3033.

The model reviewer stated that from tip to tail the PNSO T. rex was perfection. The colour of the skin and its texture was praised. This was an apex predator.

William commented:

“He is no upgrade. He is 100% his own tyrant in every way.”

It was noted that as with other PNSO figures the box contained posters, a full-colour booklet and a transparent support stand.

The New PNSO Meraxes Model Reviewed

By |2024-01-02T20:10:29+00:00May 29th, 2023|Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Dinosaur fan and model collector William sent into Everything Dinosaur his review of the recently introduced PNSO Meraxes model. William began his review by highlighting how quickly PNSO have produced a replica of Meraxes. This dinosaur was only named and scientifically described last year (2022).

He explained that collectors can never have enough PNSO theropods in their collections. The head sculpt was praised for its scientific accuracy. The well-defined lacrimal crests and the nasal ridge were commented upon. The model has an articulated lower jaw. When the mouth is opened the characteristic “shark-like” teeth of the theropod can be seen.

To read Everything Dinosaur’s article about the discovery of Meraxes gigas: Meraxes gigas A New Giant Carcharodontosaurid from Argentina.

The PNSO Meraxes Model

The reviewer states that the body sculpt is highly accurate and reflects what is known about this predator from the holotype fossil material. The figure has a muscular neck, a strong body and a powerful tail. He comments that members of the Carcharodontosauridae family tended to have very similar body shapes.

William explains:

“From start to finish all areas are detailed to the highest degree. No blank spots on the PNSO Meraxes model, there is even a cloaca.”

When reviewing the dinosaur’s limbs, the reviewer outlines the evolutionary path of these giant theropods. Reference is made to an earlier PNSO model review (Giganotosaurus 2.0). The small, highly detailed muscled forearms and the hands are well armed with the three fingered hand retaining powerful claws.

The reviewer comments that a new unique feature of “Mungo” are the pair of ankle spur claws that may have been used in intraspecific combat.

PNSO Mungo the Meraxes
The new for 2023 PNSO Mungo the Meraxes dinosaur model, which will be available shortly from Everything Dinosaur.

The Dinosaur Model’s Colour Scheme

The main body colour is described as a mixture of stunning silver which phases into a silvery-blue. There is a rose tint added to the face, head, neck and jaw area. The charcoal stripes have been executed with careful consideration. The stripes on the tail are reminiscent of those seen on extant tigers.

William comments that the model measures around 11.9 inches long. The head height is 4.1 inches and the declared scale 1:35.

As with previous model reviews, William confirms that the PNSO Meraxes model is supplied with a transparent support stand, full-colour booklet and a poster.

Meraxes gigas

William also sent in some information about this dinosaur’s fossils and their discovery.

Time Period: Late Cretaceous 95–93.9 million years ago (Cenomanian stage).

Location: Argentina Province of Mendoza in the western central of the Cuyo region.

Discovery: Meraxes’s holotype the “Campanas carcharodontosaurid” was found in 2012. It is the most complete carcharodontosaurid skeleton ever unearthed. The skull material permitted scientists to better understand the skull morphology of other carcharodontosaurids including Giganotosaurus and Mapusaurus.

The name Meraxes is derived from the name of a great, grey, female dragon from the fantasy book series, “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R. R. Martin. William speculated whether the colour scheme chosen for the PNSO figure had been influenced by this book.

Classification:

Order: Theropoda.

Superfamily: Allosauroidea.

Clade: Carcharodontosauria.

Family: Carcharodontosauridae.

Subfamily: Giganotosaurini.

Genus: Meraxes.

Species: M. gigas.

William commented that this dinosaur has been estimated to have been around 33 feet long, with a head height of 9 feet. It weighed approximately 4.26 tonnes.

In concluding his review William declared:

“Meraxes is the second of three recent Carcharodontosauridae releases by PNSO. “Mungo” alone is spectacular by himself from his sculpt to paint application, to the spurs on his heels. No soul can say he is a toy, he is a museum display piece or teaching aid demonstrating what a theropod should be.”

William added:

The New PNSO Giganotosaurus 2.0 Reviewed

By |2024-01-02T20:16:18+00:00May 21st, 2023|Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Our thanks to dinosaur fan and model collector William who sent into Everything Dinosaur his review of the new 2.0 PNSO Giganotosaurus figure. The reviewer commented that the head sculpt of this new PNSO theropod had been influenced by recent carcharodontosaurid research.

The detailing around the eyes and the ridges on the naris are praised.

PNSO Lucas the Giganotosaurus dinosaur model (new for 2023).

PNSO Giganotosaurus 2.0

The deep set of the nostrils and skull shape is commented upon. When the articulated jaw is opened, rows of sharp teeth are displayed.

William comments:

“The PNSO Giganotosaurus is the most accurate Giganotosaurus carolinii head sculpt created to date.”

The reviewer states that dinosaur fans have a true Giganotosaurus standing before them when the model is unpacked. It has powerful neck muscles, a broad, strong back and a muscular tail. A wealth of varied folds and scales cover the model’s main torso.

“From top to bottom no area goes unloved. All is covered in the details never missed by PNSO and the figure has a cloaca.”

Giganotosaurus Limbs

The arms end in hands with fearsome claws. The middle digit is slightly larger than the other two. The hindlimbs are robust and powerful. The left foot is slightly raised as if this dinosaur was captured in mid stride. The reviewer comments on the colour scheme chosen for the model. He praises the subtle application of ochre around the snout. The orange eye is almost watching you. The fudge brown of the lacrimal crest and nasal ridges draws the eye towards the head.

PNSO Giganotosaurus dinosaur model.

The Model Measurements

As with previous reviews, William provides the model’s measurements.

Scale = 1:35 with a length of 14 inches and a head height of approximately 3.5 inches. He explains that the figure is supplied with a clear, support stand. The Giganotosaurus box contains a full-colour booklet and dinosaur posters.

Time Period: Late Cretaceous 99.6–95 million years ago (Cenomanian).

Location: Argentina, Patagonia, Villa El Chocón, in the Neuquén Province.

The Science Behind the PNSO Giganotosaurus

Just ten years after the discovery of the fossils of Baryonyx walkeri, once again good fortune led to the discovery of another theropod dinosaur. Rubén D. Carolini was cruising the Villa El Chocón Badlands when he spotted a dinosaur bone (tibia). He contacted professional palaeontologists and at the 1994 meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, Giganotosaurus was introduced to the world.

Giganotosaurus carolinii means Carolini’s giant southern lizard and the first illustration was created by renowned artist James Gurney. After viewing photos taken at the fossil site of the holotype, the team was offered funding to recover the specimen by Don Lessem. The team recovered 70% of the holotype skeleton which is now preserved and exhibited in the Ernesto Bachmann Paleontological Museum in Villa El Chocón.

Theropod Classification

As part of his review William provided information on this dinosaur’s taxonomy.

Order: Theropoda

Superfamily: Allosauroidea

Clade: Carcharodontosauria

Family: Carcharodontosauridae

Tribe: Giganotosaurini

Genus: Giganotosaurus

Species: G. carolinii

William explained that palaeontologists estimate the length of this dinosaur at around 43 feet. It may have weighed in excess of 13 tons. It was the apex predator in the ecosystem. Giganotosaurus may have hunted titanosaurs. Perhaps packs of these carnivores mobbed large titanosaurs, or perhaps hunting tactics were more co-ordinated. Our thanks to William for providing some suggestions as to the hunting tactics employed by these super-sized predators.

The reviewer concluded by praising Everything Dinosaur and the manufacturer stating that PNSO had created a most accurate version of Giganotosaurus. He commented on the other theropod dinosaurs that PNSO had recently introduced and suggested that a Concavenator model should be included in the range.

William added:

“My thanks to all the team at Everything Dinosaur. Praise where praise is due to Everything Dinosaur. A Giga thank you to you all for your hard work now and in the future. With Everything Dinosaur, we are given a great choice of delivery options, and all are fairly priced.”

New PNSO Mila the Mapusaurus is Reviewed

By |2024-03-09T15:54:37+00:00May 14th, 2023|Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Our thanks to model collector and dinosaur fan William who sent into Everything Dinosaur a review of the Mila the Mapusaurus dinosaur model. The Mapusaurus figure is one of several carcharodontosaurid models offered by PNSO.

William emailed Everything Dinosaur and explained that Mila arrived along with the new Lucas 2.0 Giganotosaurus model and Mungo the Meraxes.

The reviewer commented:

“All together an impressive trio of titans from the Southern Hemisphere”.

PNSO Mila the Mapusaurus

William explained that with the discovery of the Meraxes fossil material palaeontologists had a better understanding of carcharodontosaurid cranium anatomy. The head of the Mapusaurus model was described as being well-defined with prominent lacrimal crests and a nasal ridge.

The detailing around the eyes and the skin folds associated with the head sculpt were praised.

PNSO Mila the Mapusaurus.
The PNSO Mila the Mapusaurus dinosaur model.

William explained that the majority of the theropod figures supplied by PNSO have articulated jaws. He highlighted the detailing around the jaws including the roof of the mouth.

Reviewing the Model’s Body

The powerful neck is mentioned, and the point made about the completeness of the holotype fossil material aiding the carcharodontosaurid design. The similarity between carcharodontosaurid body plans is noted and the skin folds and texture praised.

William stated:

“From tip to tip every inch of Mila is an example of how to do a proper dinosaur figure. Even the cloaca is spot on.”

The Mapusaurus Limbs

The reduced forelimbs on the figure are examined. They were reduced in members of the Carcharodontosauridae. The reduction in size is not as extreme as within the abelisaurids or Tyrannosauridae. The reviewer explained that the highly detailed hands had three fingers. Each finger displayed a large claw, with the middle finger the largest of the three.

When referring to the hind legs, William commented:

“Mila’s hindlimbs are superbly sculpted with ripples and hints of veins. Each foot has three superb toes.”

The reviewer comments on the body colour and praised the combination of grey with a hint of rose pink. The colour scheme is a homage to the rosy, pink rocks associated with the holotype fossil material and honours Rose Letwin a sponsor of the excavation project.

The wide, charcoal stripes are highlighted, and the reviewer contrasts the Mapusaurus with other PNSO theropod figures.

Concluding his review William states:

“To the touch you can feel the fine detailing of the scales and the small scutes, the ripples folds and muscles are all very pleasing.”

Providing Details About the Dinosaur

As with previous reviews, William provides model measurements.

Scale: 1:35.
Length: 14.2 inches.
Height: 4.2 inches.

He also explains that the PNSO Mila the Mapusaurus dinosaur model is supplied with a transparent support stand. An information booklet and a colour poster are also included.

Time Period:
Late Cretaceous 93.9–89.6 Million Years (Cenomanian faunal stage of the Late Cretaceous)
Location: Argentina Province of Neuquén Cañadón del Gato.

Discovery:
Over a period four years from 1997-2001 the Mapusaurus holotype was recovered by an Argentinian-Canadian Dinosaur Project. The holotype was described and named in 2006 by renowned palaeontologists Rodolfo Coria and Phil Currie.

Classifying the Dinosaur (PNSO Mila the Mapusaurus)

William also provided information on the taxonomy of Mapusaurus roseae.

Classification:
Clade: Theropoda
Superfamily: Allosauroidea
Clade: Carcharodontosauria.
Family: Carcharodontosauridae.
Subfamily: Giganotosaurini.
Genus: Mapusaurus.
Species: roseae.

He estimated that this theropod weighed around five tonnes and measured between thirty-six and forty feet in length.

Mapusaurus co-existed with several other theropods including Skorpiovenator and Ilokelesia.

Concluding his review William stated:

“All the PNSO Charcharodontosauridae figures are worthy of a place in any novice or serious collectorscollection. They are outstanding in every way.”

New Articulated Yutyrannus huali Model Reviewed

By |2023-12-12T08:45:14+00:00March 21st, 2023|Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Our thanks to William who sent into Everything Dinosaur his comprehensive review of the Beasts of the Mesozoic Yutyrannus huali model.

William explained that he had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Beasts of the Mesozoic tyrannosaur figures. He was particularly excited about the Y. huali model. In his review, he states that the nostrils are very well sculpted with nice texture. The eyes are vivid with accurate postorbital crests and the nasal crest’s midline sweeps upwards towards the postorbital crests. The jaw is praised for its accuracy.

Commenting on the Model

The Yutyrannus was an early prototype for the large-bodied tyrannosaurs that were to evolve later. The body sculpt is carefully thought out and the model has a robust body. The articulation of the figure, the model has twenty-two points of articulation, is highlighted and praised.

William comments:

“Pose as you wish without fear of a toppling figure. You have a stable figure like the real Yutyrannus was in life.”

The reviewer explained that the fully articulated, jointed tail is easy to add to the figure. He found the fully articulated jaw complete with the tongue a delight, and stated that swapping over the feet was easy, but recommended care when making model adjustments.

Attaching the figure to the stand peg is easy.

Yutyrannus huali model.
The Beasts of the Mesozoic Yutyrannus huali model comes complete with a display base.

The Feather Sculpt

The details on the model, particularly the feathers are described as “truly awe inspiring”. The reviewer exclaims that from “start to finish”, this is one of the best feathered dinosaur figures currently on the market.

William explains that as Yutyrannus was an early member of Tyrannosauroidea, the arms are powerful and equipped with strong hands and three fingers. He points out that the arms should be held downwards with palms facing inwards. William comments on the powerful legs with the toe claws blunted through wear.

The colour scheme chosen for the figure is based on Steller’s Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus). The reviewer describes the model and comments that stability is 100% with either sets of lower limbs fitted.

Scale: 1/18th
Length: 16 inches
Height: 6.5 inches
Points of articulation: twenty-two

Packaging and Accessories

The model is supplied in a window box with packaging art and the data card illustration created by Shannon Beaumont. The articulated model is supplied with two sets of interchangeable feet with closed and open toe versions. There is a rock and snow display base, with a peg to secure the figure.

As with William’s other model reviews he provides some information about the dinosaur.

Time Period: Early Cretaceous (125 million years ago) from the Yixian Formation.

Location: Liaoning Province, China.

Yutyrannus huali Model (Dinosaur Details)

Three fossil specimens are representing three individual animals of different sizes. The fossil material was originally recovered from a fossil dealer. This dinosaur was formally described in 2012.

To read Everything Dinosaur’s blog post about the fossil discovery: One Tonne Basal Tyrannosauroid.

Classification

Clade: Theropoda
Superfamily: Tyrannosauroidea
Family: Proceratosauridae
Type species: Yutyrannus
Species: Y. huali

Weight: 1.2 tons
Length: 29.5 feet
Height: 9 feet

William explained that during the Early Cretaceous northern China had a climate similar to British Columbia, with coastal forests dominated by conifers. He also highlighted some of the coeval dinosaurs that shared this cold, harsh habitat. The discovery of three individual animals of different sizes found together supports the theory that these dinosaurs were social, pack animals.

In concluding his review, William exclaimed:

“For my first Beasts of the Mesozoic figure I decided upon their 1/18th Yutyrannus huali. It has great articulation, and you are purchasing the Rolls Royce of dinosaur figures.”

New PNSO Therizinosaurus Dinosaur Model Reviewed

By |2024-01-02T16:10:48+00:00March 14th, 2023|Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Our thanks to model collector William who sent into Everything Dinosaur a review of the recently introduced PNSO Therizinosaurus dinosaur model.

William begins his review by commenting on the model’s head. He praises its shape, the placement of the nostrils and the details shown around the eyes. The articulated lower jaw is also commented upon.

PNSO Qingge the Therizinosaurus - view of the head.
The new PNSO Therizinosaurus model has a beautifully detailed head with lots of evidence of a shaggy coat of feathers on the neck. The model also has an articulated lower jaw.

PNSO Therizinosaurus Dinosaur Model

Turning to the main body sculpt, the superb integumentary coat of feathers is praised with the reviewer awarding “100 points for this feature”. The wide pelvis is present, and the model has been given robust and powerful thighs combined with four-toed, plantigrade feet. The huge gut is highlighted and the reviewer confirms that the PNSO figure has a cloaca.

The scythe-like claws, for which this dinosaur is famous are described as “just perfection”. William comments that his figure stands unaided, but he does recommend the use of the clear, plastic display stand provided with the model for long term display.

Qingge the Therizinosaurus

PNSO selected a sloth-like colouration for their figure. There are no bright, clashing colours. The colour scheme chosen suits “Qingge”.

His eyes are a strong orange with a determined look set in them as if he means business, with a ring of green feathers around each orbit. The upper beak is pink with grey wash at the tip, with a dark wash on the mouth interior. From the back of the head down to the wrist the figure is a dark, charcoal grey which then transitions into a russet brown over the main upper body. The massive claws have a very naturalistic look.

Model Measurements

William provides details of the accessories supplied with the figure, the art poster and the clear, plastic support stand.

Scale: 1:35
Length: 7.8 inches
Height: 6 inches

He confirms that the dinosaur fossil material comes from Upper Cretaceous deposits of the Nemegt Formation (Mongolia).

Providing Information About Therizinosaurus

As with previous reviews, William provided some information about the fossil discoveries.

Three years after the end of World War II, palaeontologists and field teams were out back in the field looking for fossil bones. A joint Mongolian/USSR Academy of Sciences expedition was despatched to the Nemegt Formation exposed in the Gobi Desert. Strange, fragmented fossils were uncovered.

Renowned palaeontologist Evgeny Maleev (who also described the tyrannosaur Tarbosaurus), thought the bones represented a turtle-like animal. He erected the family Therizinosauridae. After years of research and the discovery of more complete fossil specimens, Therizinosaurus was revealed to be bizarre, herbivorous member of the Maniraptora clade of dinosaurs.

PNSO Qingge the Therizinosaurus
The PNSO model has been photographed against a green, stylised background and a more detailed prehistoric scene has not been used in the background – such was the company’s eagerness to get this model announced.

The PNSO Therizinosaurus Dinosaur Model

William described Therizinosaurus cheloniformis and provided details on taxonomy.

William also described the Late Cretaceous environment as represented by the Nemegt Formation and mentioned the presence of large tyrannosaurs, the apex predators in the ecosystem.

He explained:

“Therizinosaurus would have been no easy meal for either Tarbosaurus bataar and the fleet-footed Alioramus remotus.”

The reviewer added:

“Qingge is an example of how to execute accuracy within a scale figure. PNSO’s Therizinosaurus cheloniformis is the only version I’ll ever need to own.”

Our thanks to prehistoric animal model collector and dinosaur fan William who sent in his review of the PNSO Suchomimus dinosaur model. William has stated that from the first images he viewed, he has found “Thabo” very pleasing. He describes the PNSO figure as one of the finest and most accurate Baryonychinae figures available.

A Customer Reviews Suchomimus

The reviewer begins by commenting on the head sculpt. He explains that the nostrils are lower on Suchomimus compared to the Spinosaurini suggesting that Suchomimus and other members of the Baryonychinae subfamily were less aquatic, perhaps preferring to hunt in the shallows.

The colours chosen by PNSO are highlighted and the articulated jaw blends in well. The anterior of the jaws has the classical terminal rosette typical of the Spinosauridae.

The Body and the Limbs

The reviewer states that the flesh that was prominent along the spine has been recreated and any “shrink wrapping” of the figure avoided by the design team. The model has also been provided with a cloaca.

William exclaims:

“Thabo is a model that is fantastic from any angle, and it will make a great diorama figure.”

The musculature of the shoulder area is praised and the texture on the forelimbs highlighted. The size and proportions of the digits and their associated claws are commented upon and the hind limbs are also praised.

The reviewer explains that the blunt toe claws are realistic, the living animal having blunt toe claws as a result of its locomotion.

William highlights the bright, orange eyes which work well with the rainbow-coloured nasal crest. The body is described as being a deep, rich matt grey with a paler band running along the back and with stripes covering the tail. The skin texture of the figure is complimented and the numerous skin folds and wrinkles praised.

Information About Suchomimus

William also submitted some information about the dinosaur and its fossils.

Time Period: Early Cretaceous – 112 million years ago, fossils from the Elrhaz Formation.

Location:
Ténéré desert Niger Republic of Africa.

Family: Spinosauridae.
Subfamily: Baryonychinae.
Tribe: Ceratosuchopsini.
Species: Suchomimus tenerensis.

Weight: 2.8–4.2 Tons.
Length: 31-36 Feet.
Height: 12 Feet.

William explained that Suchomimus shared an extensive floodplain environment with other large theropods such as the early carcharodontosaurid Eocarcharia dinops and the abelisaurid Kryptops palaios. He also outlines some of the latest research that suggests that members of the Baryonychinae were not as well adapted to an aquatic life as later spinosaurids, whose nostrils were positioned higher up the snout.

Our thanks to William for providing Everything Dinosaur with such a comprehensive review.
