Mojo Tyrannosaurus rex Deluxe “Turntable Tuesday”

It is “Turntable Tuesday” on Everything Dinosaur’s YouTube channel once again and this time, it is the turn of the new for 2020 Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex deluxe to go for a spin on our studio turntable. The Mojo “Prehistoric and Extinct” range of figures is a little T. rex top heavy at the moment, Everything Dinosaur has seven Mojo tyrannosaur figures in stock at the moment, if the baby T. rex figure is included.

However, a number of the older models have been de-listed and are likely to be out of production very soon. All the more reason to focus on some of the sixteen new for 2020 dinosaurs introduced into this line, hence our decision to highlight the Mojo Tyrannosaurus rex deluxe dinosaur model.

Deluxe Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex

This carefully crafted dinosaur figure shows plenty of detail, the bright yellow eye can be easily seen in the close up shots of the model when the articulated lower jaw is demonstrated. The jaw opens quite well and the tongue has been skilfully painted.

The head sculpt has been designed to emphasis the stereoscopic vision of this apex predator. The orbit in the skull of mature T. rex specimens suggest that the actual eye of this carnivorous dinosaur was about the size of a tennis ball. Many palaeontologists believe, that just like its close relatives the birds, Tyrannosaurus rex had excellent colour vision.

Everything Dinosaur’s Video Review

In our short “Turntable Tuesday” review, (the video lasts 1:45), we compare this new figure to the Papo brown running T. rex figure, that was originally introduced in 2013. Although the figures are similar and both dinosaurs have articulated lower jaws, the Mojo model is slightly smaller and has a leaner look to it. The Mojo Tyrannosaurus rex deluxe has a darker colour scheme providing emphasis on the countershading.

Brachiosaurus has been a mainstay of the Mojo Fun “Prehistoric and Extinct” prehistoric animal model range since this series was introduced. Recently, new members of the Sauropodomorpha have been added, a colourful Diplodocus was included back in 2018 and this year, the long-necked dinosaur numbers have been swelled with the addition of a Mamenchisaurus, Brontosaurus and a new Mojo Fun Brachiosaurus deluxe model.

The Subdued Colouration of the Mojo Fun Brachiosaurus Model

The new Brachiosaurus figure has a more subdued colouration than the Mojo Fun Diplodocus. There is certainly much to be admired in this new replica of “arm lizard” and at around eighteen centimetres tall, this is quite a sizeable dinosaur model too. Prior to the model’s arrival we took the opportunity to take some photographs of the Brachiosaurus and other sauropods in the Mojo Fun “Prehistoric and Extinct” model range.

Commenting About the Sauropodomorpha

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Very little if anything is known about the colouration of the Sauropodomorpha. Many of these dinosaurs were giants and although their colouration is speculative, the largest terrestrial vertebrates today, animals such as elephants and rhinos, tend to have subdued, grey colouration. Whilst scientists cannot be certain what colour these dinosaurs were, a number of model making companies including Mojo have tended to depict these animals with more subtle colour schemes with greys and browns predominating.”

Many of the recently introduced models in this range are larger than their predecessors. For example, the new for 2020 Brachiosaurus is around 4 centimetres longer than the Mojo Fun “large” Brachiosaurus model. The Baryonyx dinosaur model is one of sixteen new dinosaurs introduced by Mojo this year (2020), within their prestigious “Prehistoric and Extinct” model range. In the Everything Dinosaur video, the model is put through its paces and viewers are given the opportunity to get a 360 degree impression of Baryonyx walkeri. The video review lasts for just over a minute and a half, it is the thirteenth video made in the Everything Dinosaur “Turntable Tuesday” feature,

The Beautiful Colouration on the New for 2020 Mojo Fun Baryonyx Dinosaur Model

This hand-painted replica measures around 25 centimetres in length and it is one of five new Mojo theropod figures to have an articulated lower jaw. The other new figures with articulated jaws are the Tyrannosaurus rex deluxe, the new Allosaurus, the feathered troodontid and the Spinosaurus deluxe. Dinosaur fans will know that Baryonyx was distantly related to Spinosaurus, although it lived many millions of years before Spinosaurus evolved.

Our eagerly anticipated video review of the recently introduced Wild Past Protoceratops dinosaur model is now up on Everything Dinosaur’s YouTube channel. In this short video (it lasts six minutes and fifty seconds), we combine a little bit of the science behind the study of this basal neoceratopsian with a review of the actual replica. The model represents Protoceratops andrewsi, which was named and described back in 1923 (Granger and Gregory).

The Wild Past Protoceratops Dinosaur Model

The Wild Past Protoceratops (P. andrewsi) model was introduced earlier this year (2020). It is the first figure in an exciting range of replicas to be introduced by Wild Past. In our short video review, we comment on the dinosaur model, provide size and scale information and we discuss pricing. The production run for the Protoceratops is actually very small, not that much bigger than the number of fossil specimens of Protoceratops collected by the American Museum of Natural History expeditions between 1922 and 1925! A 1/35th Scale Figure

The video review discusses the two species that are assigned to the Protoceratops genus (P. andrewsi and P. hellenikorhinus). We explain how a second species was erected and look briefly at the differences between these two species. In addition, we comment about the 2011 fossil discovery of a nest of Protoceratops andrewsi, complete with the fossilised remains of babies. Although the American Museum of Natural History field team found dinosaur eggs in association with Protoceratops fossil material in their expeditions of the 1920’s, these eggs were not ceratopsid eggs.

Palaeontologists now know that the eggs the American Museum of Natural History field team found were actually laid by an oviraptorosaur, a clade of very bird-like dinosaurs which will be forever referred to as “egg thief lizards”.

The “Turntable Tuesday” video is a weekly feature on the Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel. A prehistoric animal model is filmed at our bespoke studio on a turntable. This permits dinosaur fans and model collectors to get a three-hundred and sixty degree view of the replica. The objective of these short videos, all of which have to last for no more than two minutes or so, is to showcase the figure. These videos also give Everything Dinosaur the opportunity to comment on the prehistoric animal models and provide further information.

Brontosaurus excelsus

The model measures around twenty-two centimetres in length, but in reality the figure is much larger as the neck is turned slightly and the tail is twisted as if this sauropod was about to give an attacking theropod dinosaur a swipe. The fact sheet that accompanies sales of this figure provides more information on the type species for this genus – Brontosaurus excelsus. The colour scheme is muted with greys and tans predominating.

There are plenty of details to admire on the skin, especially the texture of the neck and the folds located underneath the sturdy body. It may not be the most accurate representation of “thunder lizard” made but the model is robust and ideal for imaginative, creative play.

The Brontosaurus is one of three long-necked dinosaur models introduced by Mojo Fun this year, the other two being Mamenchisaurus and a new Brachiosaurus.

Wild Safari Prehistoric World Ichthyosaurus Model

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Ichthyosaurus sports a colouration that resembles the Killer Whale (Orcinus orca). Several species of Ichthyosaurus are now recognised, this taxon having been something of a taxonomic waste basket for much of the 19th and 20th centuries. Ichthyosaurus was much smaller than an extant Killer Whale, with the largest individuals less than 3.5 metres long and some species such as Ichthyosaurus communis, which was the named and scientifically described in 1822, being smaller still, with most specimens from the Dorset coast for example, averaging 2 metres in length.

A Wonderful and Detailed Marine Reptile Model

The 2020 Ichthyosaurus replaces the 2010 Ichthyosaurus from Safari Ltd. In the “Turntable Tuesday” video the beautiful detailing around the eyes is highlighted along with the model’s colouration. A segment of the video is dedicated to showing the underside of the figure. The cloaca (vent) is highlighted, demonstrating how the sculptors at Safari Ltd have gone to great lengths to ensure an accurate interpretation of a marine reptile.

It’s “Turntable Tuesday” and today, it is the turn of the award-winning Wild Safari Prehistoric World Gryposaurus to be put through its paces on the Everything Dinosaur turntable. This fantastic model of a hadrosaur was introduced in 2013 and it was awarded the accolade of best dinosaur toy of the year by readers of the prestigious “Prehistoric Times” magazine.

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Gryposaurus Dinosaur Model

Our short video (it lasts under two minutes), shows the beautiful, blue-eyed Gryposaurus figure. We also use this opportunity to compare it to the recently introduced Edmontosaurus model, also from Safari Ltd.

Within the large Hadrosauridae family, both Edmontosaurus and Gryposaurus are members of the Saurolophinae sub-family, sometimes referred to as the Hadrosaurinae, although these duck-billed dinosaurs were not that closely related. Both genera are associated with the North American landmass Laramidia, in general terms, Edmontosaurus specimens tend to be associated with younger strata. For example, Edmontosaurus annectens is confined to the late Maastrichtian, whilst the species within the Gryposaurus genus are associated with older Campanian-aged deposits.

“Hook-nosed Lizard”

Named as a result of its prominent nasal arch, that gives Gryposaurus its distinctive bulbous-looking snout, this dinosaur compares very well to the 2020 Edmontosaurus. Although no scaling for these figures is given, the two models are roughly comparable in scale, Gryposaurus being regarded as smaller than both E. regalis and E. annectens. When these two figures are together on our turntable we refer to them as “a dazzling duo of duck-bills”.

Customers Praise Everything Dinosaur

These are certainly challenging times for us all. Much of the world continues to be in lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19). We hope that everyone is keeping well and staying safe. Our thoughts are with all those families that have been affected by this pandemic. We would like to convey our thoughts and sympathies to all those who have been affected.

At Everything Dinosaur, we continue to do all we can to try to keep a sense of normality for our customers. Team members have provided support and assistance as they know how important birthdays can be so they have been working extra hard to ensure parcels are despatched promptly.

Stunning Wild Past Protoceratops Model on Display

The Photogenic Wild Past Protoceratops

Our thanks to model collector Elizabeth who sent into Everything Dinosaur a photograph of her recently acquired Wild Past Protoceratops dinosaur model on display. Enthusiastic collector Elizabeth had combined her Protoceratops andrewsi figure with the base from the Paleo-Creatures Moschops replica. The result is a very effective composition, highlighting the attention to detail that can be found in both these ranges, Wild Past and Paleo-Creatures.

Depicting an Ancient Environment

Elizabeth’s choice of display base for her model is very appropriate. Protoceratops fossil remains are associated with two geological formations, the Djadochta Formation epitomised by the astonishing beauty and desolation of the Flaming Cliffs site, the type locality for this formation, from which the fossil remains of Protoceratops andrewsi have been recovered. Secondly, the larger species Protoceratops hellenikorhinus, is known from the Bayan Mandahu Formation which outcrops some 450 km (280 miles) to the south-east of the Flaming Cliffs location.

Both formations are dominated by sandstones and remarkably, the climate in these areas today is roughly comparable to the palaeo-climate of the Late Cretaceous. Displaying the Wild Past Protoceratops andrewsi on a sandy base is an accurate reconstruction of the habitat of this neoceratopsian.

The biota associated with the Upper Cretaceous deposits of the Djadochta and Bayan Mandahu formations occupied a harsh, arid scrubland with little permanent water. Biologists refer to such difficult habitats as “stressed environments”, the absence of large vertebrates, such as the fossils of much bigger dinosaurs, supports the hypothesis that Protoceratops and the other Late Cretaceous residents had to endure a harsh climate.

An Exciting Start for a New Model Range

The 1:35 scale Protoceratops is the first in a new range of models (Wild Past), Elizabeth emailed to say:

“Here’s another photo for you to use if you wish. It’s the Wild Past Protoceratops – I think this is such an exciting start to a new line.”

Ironically, both the Wild Past Protoceratops and the Paleo-Creatures Moschops have featured on Everything Dinosaur’s YouTube channel, in a series of short videos we have entitled “turntable Tuesday”.

Commenting upon her photograph, Elizabeth added:

“She [the Protoceratops] is gate-crashing the base of the Paleo-Creatures Moschops. She seems intent on checking out the sizeable footprint of the animal that walked over the sand previously, perhaps while she was away foraging for her minute hatchlings in the nest!”

In our correspondence with the photographer, we highlighted a research paper published back in 2011, that examined an extremely rare event preserved in the fossil record. A footprint of a protoceratopsid dinosaur had been found in association with the fossilised remains of a Protoceratops. As Elizabeth’s photograph depicts a Protoceratops investigating a footprint, it could be argued that is an example of art imitating science.

“Turntable Tuesday” Bullyland Ammonite Model

It’s “Turntable” Tuesday at Everything Dinosaur! The time of the week when we put another prehistoric animal model on our turntable and give it a spin. Today, it is the turn of the Bullyland ammonite model, the first invertebrate to feature in this series and an ammonite replica that it is used by museums all over the world to illustrate the Ammonoidea.

Ammonite Replicas

The Bullyland ammonite is one of the most popular figures in the German company’s “Dinosaur Park” range. It depicts a typical ammonite, with large eyes, a hypernome and a beautifully detailed beak (mouth). The shell has an inverted keel and it is strongly ribbed, characteristics associated with a number of known genera from both the Jurassic and Cretaceous geological periods.

Ubiquitous and Important Extinct Group of Cephalopods

Although extinct, animals in the Subclass Ammonoidea are extremely important to scientists. Ammonites are members of the Mollusca Phylum that lived in chambered shells and were entirely marine. Many hundreds of different genera are known. The ability to evolve rapidly, to leave abundant fossil material in the form of their fossilised shells (comprised of aragonite, a naturally occurring crystalline form of calcium carbonate), has made these molluscs ideal candidates for zonal fossils.

Outcrops of rock, although in some cases, separated by thousands of miles and composed of different constituents, limestone and sandstone for example, can be correlated due to the fact that they contain similar ammonite fossils. The technique of using fossils to identify the relative age of sediments is called biostratigraphy. Rock layers are divided into distinct and easily identifiable zones as they are characterised by one or more particular fossil species. Ammonites make ideal zone fossils.

Used in Museum Displays and Exhibits

In the short video, the ammonite model is shown next to a fossil specimen. Many museums use the Bullyland ammonite replica in display cases so that visitors can get an idea of what the living animal was like whilst they view the fossilised remains of the ammonite aragonite shells.
