A Unique Predator of Lisowicia – Smok wawelski

A Predator of Lisowicia – Smok wawelski

Prehistoric animal model collectors have been eager to get their hands on the new for 2020 CollectA Deluxe Lisowicia bojani, dicynodont model.  Everything Dinosaur team members are busy creating a short video review of the model entitled “Dynamic Dicynodonts”.  Our YouTube video aims to showcase the CollectA 1:20 scale figure and to discuss dicynodonts in general.  Ironically, in the Late Triassic there was a predator that the elephant-sized Lisowicia might have feared.

The bonebed in southern Poland has revealed the presence of a five-metre plus archosaurian carnivore.  A powerful animal scientifically described in 2011, the meat-eater has been named Smok wawelski and although a fully grown Lisowicia was probably invulnerable to attack, Smok would have been capable of bringing down juvenile or sick individuals, as Smok is the largest terrestrial predator known from the Late Triassic of central Europe.

The “Dragon of Lisowice”

Smok had a skull which was more than half a metre in length.  It was the apex predator of a diverse biota revealed by the clay pit fossils found close to the village of Lisowice in Silesia, southern Poland.  The first evidence of this large animal, consisting of cranial material was discovered in 2007, based on these fossils it was assigned to the Theropoda.

The braincase was similar to that seen in allosaurs, hence the classification.  However, more recent fossil discoveries have thrown doubts upon this taxonomic assessment.  It may not belong to the dinosaur/bird lineage of the Archosauria at all, Smok could be a member of the Rauisuchidae, a globally diverse family of archosaurs from the crocodile branch of the Archosauria.

Femur Bone Comparison Smok wawelski Compared to a Theropod (Liliensternus) and a Rauisuchid (Postosuchus)

Archosaur bone comparison (thigh bone comparison).
The femur of S. wawelski is compared to femori representing two other archosaurs, one from the Theropoda (Liliensternus) and a femur from the rauisuchid Postosuchus.  When first described Smok wawelski was thought to be a theropod but further fossil discoveries led to its placement within the Archosauria becoming more uncertain.

New Papo Models Feature in Newsletter

New Papo Models Feature in an Everything Dinosaur Newsletter

New Papo models feature in the Everything Dinosaur early September newsletter including the controversial Papo Giganotosaurus dinosaur model.  The Papo Giganotosaurus is very well made and distinctly Papo, however, its anatomically inaccurate stance and unusual body proportions have led to criticism from some prehistoric animal model collectors.  This substantial dinosaur model has certainly divided opinions.  Some collectors might regard it as a throwback to much earlier dinosaur sculpts but there is no denying the quality of the finish and the excellent detailing, especially those carefully created skin folds and scales.

Papo Chilesaurus and the New Colour Variant Papo Parasaurolophus

Such has been the excitement and controversy over the introduction of the Papo Giganotosaurus dinosaur model, that the other recently introduced Papo models have been somewhat overlooked by dinosaur model fans and collectors.  However, Everything Dinosaur team members were eager to make amends and include the Papo Chilesaurus and the new colour variant of the Papo Parasaurolophus model in the company’s newsletter too.

A Popular Postosuchus and a Rare Bullyland Ichthyosaur

Everything Dinosaur had received a number of enquiries about the popular, recently introduced Schleich Postosuchus figure.  More stock of this replica of a Late Triassic predator had recently arrived and team members were keen to communicate this information to our subscribers.  In addition, there were just a few of the very rare and now out of production Bullyland Ichthyosaurus models still available.

This Ichthyosaurus figure had been officially retired around seven years ago, it was first omitted from the Bullyland brochure back in 2013.  We know how collectors like to acquire rare models, so we included a mention of the Bullyland Ichthyosaurus in our newsletter, helping our customers to avoid paying exorbitant prices for the same figure on auction sites.

Preparing a Video Review of the CollectA 1:20 Scale Lisowicia

Everything Dinosaur has been busy planning a video review of the new for 2020 Lisowicia bojani 1:20 scale replica.  This eagerly anticipated prehistoric animal model has been in stock for a couple of weeks and it has been very well received by model collectors and fans of prehistoric animal replicas.  CollectA are to be praised for introducing a model of a Triassic giant, as Lisowicia had only been named and described in 2018.

Lisowicia bojani – A Member of the Dicynodontia

Lisowicia is the largest member of the Dicynodontia, a group of protomammals that originated in the Permian and persisted (in the case of Lisowicia, the youngest dicynodont to be described to date), into the Late Triassic of Europe.  The fossil remains of several individuals, found in clay pit in southern Poland are at least ten million years younger than any other member of the Dicynodontia.

Picking up a Placerias

Team members intend to provide information about the discovery of Lisowicia and its significance.  In addition, the video will also feature an inexpensive replica of Placerias (another dicynodont, but this time from North America).

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Our objective for the video is to showcase the new CollectA Lisowicia and to discuss dicynodonts in general.  The video will also permit us the chance to take a good look at the Placerias model we also offer.  This particular synapsid figure has proved to be very popular with model makers wanting to include a variety of Late Triassic fauna in dioramas.”

Papo Giganotosaurus, Chilesaurus and the Parasaurolophus Colour Variant

The first of the new for 2020 Papo dinosaur models are in stock!  The Papo Giganotosaurus, the Papo Chilesaurus and the Papo Parasaurolophus (new colour variant).  Papo’s production plans were badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic but the first of the 2020 batch of new figures planned for this year are safe and sound in Everything Dinosaur’s warehouse.  Team members are busy working through all the reserve lists, contacting customers and despatching the Papo product newsletter that we had been promising our subscribers.

For Papo dinosaur models and other amazing prehistoric gifts: Everything Dinosaur.

The Papo Giganotosaurus Dinosaur Model

When team members first saw a prototype of the Giganotosaurus they lobbied Papo to try and change the posture.  The figure is posed in the “kangaroo stance”, a body plan long abandoned by vertebrate palaeontologists.  The dinosaur might reflect the Allosaurus illustration by Zdeněk Burian, or the titular theropod “Gwangi” as depicted by Ray Harryhausen in the movie “Valley of the Gwangi”, as such it is very much a retrospective, but just like those earlier depictions, the replica certainly has appeal.

A Papo Giganotosaurus Model has an Articulated Jaw

This is a figure that is unlikely to appear in a museum exhibition next to a Giganotosaurus mount in a bid to demonstrate what scientists think this theropod actually looked like.  However, we suspect that it is going to make a lot of young dinosaur fans and Papo model collectors very happy.

Papo Chilesaurus

In addition, the new for 2020 Papo Chilesaurus dinosaur model has arrived, a replica of one of the strangest dinosaurs described to date.  The model measures around fifteen centimetres in length and the tail is some eight centimetres in the air.  The Papo Chilesaurus has an articulated jaw.

In Stock!  A Papo Chilesaurus Dinosaur Model

Regarded as a “transitional taxon” by many palaeontologists as its skeleton exhibits a suite of characteristics that show affinity to both the Theropoda and the Ornithischia, Chilesaurus has been cited in the debate regarding the structure of the Dinosauria and whether or not the Baron et al scientific paper published in 2017, has redefined the phylogeny of the dinosaurs.  Although regarded as a biped that was capable of moving around on all fours, Papo have chosen to put their figure in a quadrupedal position.

Papo Parasaurolophus (New Colour Variant)

The third in this eagerly anticipated trio, is the Papo Parasaurolophus colour variation.  This model is the same sculpt as the previous Parasaurolophus but the mottled greens in the original figure have been replaced by a striking series of black stripes that run from the tip of the tail up to the neck.  The stripes are also present on the curved head crest.  The colour scheme of the figure is a blend of greys, browns and muted oranges.  The new colour scheme is certainly intriguing, the stripes would have helped camouflage this dinosaur in a woodland for example and there is some evidence to suggest that these duck-billed dinosaurs preferred inland, forested environments.

Preparing for the New Zuniceratops Model

Preparing for the Beasts of the Mesozoic Zuniceratops

A neoceratopsian is drawing nearer.  Everything Dinosaur will soon be receiving stock of the new Beasts of the Mesozoic ceratopsians, including the wonderful Zuniceratops figure.  This colourful creation depicts Zuniceratops christopheri, the oldest North American ceratopsian possessing prominent, well-developed brow horns, a foretaste of what was to become with the evolution of the centrosaurine and chasmosaurine lineages of horned dinosaurs.

Preparing Fact Sheets on Horned Dinosaurs Including Zuniceratops

Everything Dinosaur likes to supply a free fact sheet with sales of dinosaur models.  Over the years, the company has researched and written hundreds of fact sheets.   As a result, most of the Beasts of the Mesozoic Ceratopsidae are already covered, but Zuniceratops is one of the exceptions.  Staff are currently completing their fact sheet all about this neoceratopsian from the Middle Turonian Moreno Hill Formation of west-central New Mexico.  A scale drawing of this relatively small member of the horned dinosaurs has already been commissioned.

Zuniceratops in the landscape.  The beautiful Beasts of the Mesozoic Zuniceratops dinosaur model.

Zuniceratops christopheri

Zuniceratops was formally named in 1998 (Douglas Wolfe and James Kirkland), in a preliminary description.  The publishing of the scientific paper coincided with the discovery of a substantial Zuniceratops bonebed that provided hundreds more fossil bones representing at least seven individuals (based on the number of lower jaws found).

The bones are disarticulated and represent a group of different sized animals, so calculating the maximum size for Zuniceratops is problematic, but most palaeontologists estimate that this horned dinosaur that lived around 90 million years ago (Turonian stage of the Late Cretaceous), measured between 2.2 and 3.3 metres in length.  As such, it was very much smaller than its descendants, the centrosaurine and chasmosaurine dinosaurs that were so diverse and numerous during the Campanian and Maastrichtian faunal stages of the Late Cretaceous.

The co-association of individuals of various sizes in the bonebed suggests that this dinosaur lived in herds, with adults and younger animals demonstrating communal behaviour.

Rebor Swarm X-REX (Plague Variant) in Stock

The Rebor Swarm X-REX (plague variant colour version) is now in stock at Everything Dinosaur.  This is the second in a series of four planned by Rebor, it follows on from the “Broodlord” figure that was introduced earlier on this year (2020).

A 1:35 Scale Figure

The model measures around forty-three centimetres in length once the tail has been added.   It should be noted that due to the weight of the head, the figure will not stand up without the addition of the tailpiece to act as a counterbalance.   The same is true for the Rebor Broodlord model that was introduced in January (2020).  The model is tentatively scaled at 1:35, although as this is a fantasy, science-fiction figure the stated scale is arbitrary.

Four Figures Planned in Total

A total of four figures had been planned in this science-fiction inspired series.   The aim had been to introduce one each quarter for 2020, however, the COVID-19 global pandemic delayed production and Swarm has been released some seven months after the first in the series – Broodlord was introduced.  The other two replicas are Broodlord “organic” and the intriguingly titled Swarm “radioactive”.

CollectA Deluxe Bajadasaurus Gets a Makeover

Whilst we wait for the arrival of the remainder of the new for 2020 CollectA prehistoric animal models, we can reacquaint ourselves with one of their earlier releases from the spring.  The CollectA Deluxe Bajadasaurus model was one of six figures that Everything Dinosaur was able to secure stocks of, before the COVID-19 pandemic began to disrupt the global economy.  Dinosaur model collector Elizabeth commissioned Martin Garratt to repaint her Bajadasaurus model.  The result is a spectacular reimagining of this Early Cretaceous, spiky dinosaur.

The CollectA model has been turnaround very quickly.  Bajadasaurus (B. pronuspinax) was formally named and scientifically described in February 2019 (although the fossils were found back in 2010),  the design team at CollectA were able to move from the prototype stage to full production remarkably swiftly to ensure that this model was available in early 2020.

Our thanks to Elizabeth for sending into Everything Dinosaur some photographs of her repainted figure.

Elizabeth commented:

“I’m absolutely thrilled with what Martin achieved.  I’ve never had a piece from him that I didn’t like, of course, but inevitably some pieces strike a particular chord.  This one does.  I just wish I’d ordered a base as well!”
