A Special PNSO Sinopliosaurus Review

By |2024-02-08T08:54:51+00:00November 27th, 2022|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Our thanks to model collector William who sent into Everything Dinosaur a review of the new for 2022 PNSO Chongzuo the Sinopliosaurus figure. This new replica of the first spinosaurid to be described from fossils found in China has proved to be very popular and it is wonderful to be able to publish a PNSO Sinopliosaurus review.

The broad, deep tail can of Sinopliosaurus can be seen on this image of the new PNSO dinosaur model.

PNSO Chongzuo the Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis

In William’s email to Everything Dinosaur he exclaimed surprise that a replica of this spinosaurid had been produced by PNSO.

William stated:

“I was astounded to be honest but truly delighted! Never had I expected such a little known and fragmented fossil species would have received a highly accurate and superbly detailed PNSO figure but here we are reviewing Chongzuo.”

An Introduction to the Spinosauridae

In the review, it was commented that the Baryonychinae are members of the Spinosauridae family and a number of UK theropods had been assigned to the Spinosauridae. Commenting on the on-going debate about the validity of the Sinopliosaurus genus, William pointed out that Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis and Siamosaurus suteethorni might be synonyms as Sinopliosaurus is only known from fragmentary fossil material

Chongzuo the Sinopliosaurus Reviewed

William starts his review by examining the head of the figure, he states that the model has one of the most exquisite Spinosauridae head sculpts, a little longer and finer than a typical Baryonyx figure, which was probably used a reference. The placement of the nostrils is praised, and William highlighted the sagittal crest.

William commented that the head was

“Set atop of a superb but classical ‘S’ shaped spinosaurid neck.”

The Main Body

William’s review of the body stated that Chongzuo shares a similar Baryonychinae body plan. The presence of gastralia in the sculpt and the musculature of the figure was pointed out.

The neural spines giving this theropod a distinctive hump were commented upon William praised the skin texture and the tail length.

PNSO are adding a second member of the Spinosauridae family to their mid-size model range. Joining Essien the Spinosaurus is Chongzuo the Sinopliosaurus.

Forelimbs and Hindlimbs

The review continues with a statement that the Spinosauridae retained the three-clawed hands of their Megalosauroidea ancestors and the limb proportions of the Sinopliosaurus figure are highlighted. When commenting on the size of the manual unguals (claws), it was pointed out the one of the claws (digit I), should be larger and more recurved than the others. The hindlimbs are described as “outstanding” and a comment is made about the support stand (supplied) being helpful in stabilising the model.

PNSO Chongzuo the Sinopliosaurus model measurements.
PNSO Chongzuo the Sinopliosaurus measures 29.3 cm long and stands 8.5 cm high.

Colour and Texture of the Model

The dominate colour is a russet beige with slightly lighter shading on the underside of the figure, the upper jaw is a grey colour and there are a series of stripes running along the flanks and to the tip of the animal’s tail.

When commenting on the sagittal crest, William states:

“A dash of yellow highlights the sagittal crest which draws the eye to it, the eyes of the model are jet black, and the stained ivory teeth look very natural.”

Model Measurements and Dimensions

Scale: 1:36.
Length: 11.7 inches.
Height: 3 inches.

Packaging and Accessories:

  • Clear, plastic support stand.
  • Illustrated 64-page booklet.
  • A3 colour poster.
  • QR code to a video link.
PNSO Chongzuo the Sinopliosaurus has an articulated jaw.
PNSO Chongzuo the Sinopliosaurus has an articulated jaw. The genus was originally erected under the presumption that the fossil material including isolated teeth represented a pliosaur (marine reptile).

The reviewer went onto to list theropods ascribed to the Baryonychinae:
Baryonyx walkeri
Suchomimus tenerensis
Ceratosuchops inferodios
Riparovenator milnerae
Iberospinus natarioi
Vallibonavenatrix cani
Suchosaurus cultridens
Ostafrikasaurus crassiserratus?

White Rock Spinosaurus

Members of the Spinosaurinae clade were then listed:
Ichthyovenator laosensis
Irritator challengeri

Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis?
Camarillasaurus cirugedae
Oxalaia quilombensis
Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis
Spinosaurus aegyptiacus

Sinopliosaurus Discovery and Classification

As with earlier model reviews, William provided information on the discovery of Sinopliosaurus and its taxonomy.

Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis/ Siamosaurus suteethorni

Classification:
Superfamily: Megalosauroidea.
Clade: Megalosauria.
Family: Spinosauridae.
Subfamily: Spinosaurinae.
Genus: Sinopliosaurus/Siamosaurus.

Time Period:
Early Cretaceous 129–113 million years ago.

Location: Southern China into North-eastern Thailand.

The reviewer then commented on the fossil discovery that eventually led to the proposal of a Chinese spinosaurid genus, the first in the country. He also hoped that further fossil discoveries would be made providing palaeontologists with a more complete understanding of this dinosaur.

When explaining the differences between different clades defined within the Spinosauridae it was stated that Members of the Spinosauridae exhibit a skull with a profile similar to that seen within the crocodilians. Baryonychinae have a greater number of teeth as compared to their Spinosaurini cousins.
But they all share the unique terminal rosette hook which sets them apart from all other major theropod groups.

All members have their nostrils held higher upon their skulls to aid with the hunting of fish.

Weight: 1.1 Tonne.
Length: 30 Feet.
Height: 14.8 Feet.

The reviewer concluded by exclaiming:

“PNSO have given us an example of Spinosauridae perfection with Chongzuo the Sinopliosaurus”.

Our thanks to William for providing a comprehensive review.

New CollectA Models for 2023 (Final Part)

By |2022-11-24T14:49:14+00:00November 25th, 2022|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos, Press Releases|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur in collaboration with our chums at CollectA announce the fourth and final batch of new CollectA prehistoric animal models for 2023. Two new prehistoric animal figures have been announced, both scale models, one a recently named dinosaur, the second the first replica of an ancient amphibian to be made by CollectA namely:

  • CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale Koolasuchus cleelandi – due to be available mid-2023.
  • CollectA Deluxe 1:6 scale Stegouros elengassen – due to be available mid-2023.

CollectA Deluxe Koolasuchus cleelandi

The Koolasuchus figure is the first prehistoric amphibian model to be made by CollectA. It was the last of its kind, surviving in the fast-flowing rivers of what was to become Australia some fifty million years after its closest relatives had become extinct. In the notes that accompanied the model photographs, reference is made to the Koolasuchus figure having paired tusks and tiny teeth embedded into the roof of its huge mouth, anatomical features found in other temnospondyls and presumed present in this ambush predator.

CollectA Deluxe Koolasuchus cleelandi model
The CollectA Deluxe (Other Prehistoric Animals) 1:20 scale Koolasuchus cleelandi model, due to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in the middle of 2023.

The tail is deep and broad, which would have helped propel this three to five-metre-long carnivore through the water. The tail looks to have a few nicks in it, very appropriate for a replica of a large, mature animal. The mottled green markings on the model would have helped to camouflage this amphibian as it lurked amongst the weeds waiting to catch its next meal. Those formidable, different-sized teeth look most impressive too.

CollectA Deluxe 1:6 Scale Stegouros

The final new for 2023 prehistoric animal figure to be announced is a replica of the bizarre, armoured dinosaur Stegouros (S. elengassen), which was formally, scientifically described in December 2021.

To read Everything Dinosaur’s blog post about Stegouros elengassen: New Armoured Dinosaur from Chile.

Roaming the southernmost parts of Chile in the Late Cretaceous, Stegouros demonstrates skull features that reflect a close affinity with the Ankylosauria, but the postcranial skeleton shows more primitive stegosaur-like characteristics.

CollectA Deluxe 1:6 scale Stegouros elengassen dinosaur model
The CollectA Deluxe 1:6 scale Stegouros elengassen dinosaur model – due to be available mid-2023.

The unique tail club, reminiscent of an Aztec warrior’s club (macuahuitl) is depicted along with the dermal armour and the skin texture looks amazing. The model has been posed as if it is about to swing its tail. The white flash over the eye reflects the view that facial markings could have been important visual signals to denote maturity and the health of an individual. The figure has a declared scale of 1/6th.

To view the range of CollectA Deluxe figures in stock at Everything Dinosaur: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Life Models.

Model Measurements

  • CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale Koolasuchus (Other Prehistoric Animals) – length 21.4 cm, height 4 cm (approximately).
  • CollectA Deluxe 1:6 scale Stegouros (CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Deluxe) – length 30.5 cm, tail height 9.5 cm (approximately).

This exciting pair of Cretaceous prehistoric animal models should be available from Everything Dinosaur in the middle of 2023.

This concludes the new for 2023 CollectA prehistoric animal announcements.

Appalachiosaurus montgomeriensis

Each Rebor 1:35 scale adult Deinosuchus hatcheri figure is supplied with a rather bloodthirsty accessory. The Deinosuchus models come with the head and partial torso of a theropod dinosaur (Appalachiosaurus). Appalachiosaurus is known from a single fossil specimen discovered in Upper Cretaceous aged sediments in Alabama, although other theropod fossils found elsewhere in the United States have been assigned to this genus.

Appalachiosaurus was named and scientifically described in 2005 (Carr and Williamson). The exact taxonomic relationship of this dinosaur is disputed, it is hoped that further fossil discoveries will help to clarify the phylogeny of this predator. The size of Appalachiosaurus is uncertain, the Alabama fossils represent a juvenile which measured approximately six metres long. A dinosaur this size coming down to the water’s edge to get a drink would have been a potential target for a Deinosuchus lying submerged ready to attack.

Deinosuchus Swamp and Estuary

In 2021, Rebor introduced a pair of limited-edition hatching Deinosuchus replicas. Only a few hundred of each figure (swamp and estuary) were produced. The adult Deinosuchus models are due to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur early in 2023, by then, it is likely that the hatching Deinosuchus models will have sold out.

Everything Dinosaur in conjunction with our friends at CollectA announce the third batch of new CollectA models for 2023. Two new prehistoric animal figures, both marine reptiles, have been announced namely:

  • CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Mosasaurus with an articulated jaw – due to be available early 2023.
  • Shastasaurus (Age of Dinosaurs Popular) – due to be available early 2023.

New CollectA Models

CollectA Deluxe Mosasaurus 1:40 Scale

A new 1:40 scale figure of a Mosasaurus, a giant, predatory marine reptile from the Cretaceous that was more closely related to modern snakes and lizards than it was to archosaurs such as the Dinosauria. The model incorporates the latest scientific thinking and includes an asymmetrical caudal fin, with a nick in the top portion as if this Late Cretaceous marine reptile has been bitten by another mosasaur. Inside the beautifully painted, articulated jaw, pterygoid teeth have been incorporated into the roof of the mouth.

The CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Mosasaurus will be available from Everything Dinosaur, early next year (2023). This figure is the second Mosasaurus model to be introduced by CollectA, as a not to scale Mosasaurus replica was added to the Age of Dinosaurs Popular range back in 2014.

CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Popular Shastasaurus

CollectA plan to introduce another marine reptile model next year (2023). It is a replica of the primitive ichthyosaur Shastasaurus, a large reptile, possibly gigantic that lived more than one hundred million years before the Mosasauridae evolved.

Shastasaurus marine reptile model.
CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Shastasaurus marine reptile model.

Shastasaurus was a big, whale-sized marine reptile from the Triassic. The replica has been given a striking black and white colour scheme reminiscent of the Killer Whale (Orca). These markings would have helped this giant hunter hide from its prey, the colour pattern making Shastasaurus less conspicuous from both above and below. The model has barnacles on its flippers and body, just like the barnacles associated with many large, extant cetaceans that swim in our oceans today. The asymmetrical tail fluke has also got a nick in it towards its apex.

The CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Popular Shastasaurus is due to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in early 2023.

New CollectA Models 2023 (Part 2)

By |2022-11-10T22:08:39+00:00November 11th, 2022|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos, Press Releases|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur in collaboration with CollectA announces the second batch of new CollectA models 2023. Three new prehistoric animal figures have been announced namely:

  • Ruyangosaurus (1:100 scale Deluxe model) – due to be available early 2023.
  • Brighstoneus (Age of Dinosaurs Popular) – due to be available in early 2023.
  • Anomalocaris (CollectA Other Prehistoric Animals) – due to be available in early 2023.

New CollectA Models

New CollectA Models 2023.
New CollectA prehistoric animal models. Anomalocaris (top left), the CollectA Deluxe 1:100 scale Ruyangosaurus (right) and the ornithopod Brighstoneus (bottom left). All three new CollectA models should be available from Everything Dinosaur in early 2023.

CollectA Deluxe Ruyangosaurus (1:100 Scale)

The first CollectA Deluxe scale model to be announced for 2023 is this stunning replica of the enormous Chinese titanosaur Ruyangosaurus. Named and described in 2009 (Ruyangosaurus giganteus), this huge sauropod is estimated to have been around thirty metres long and to have weighed in excess of fifty tonnes. It is one of the largest dinosaurs known from Asia.

CollectA Deluxe Ruyangosaurus
The new for early 2023 CollectA Deluxe Ruyangosaurus dinosaur model.

The CollectA Deluxe Ruyangosaurus has been given a grey, almost elephant-like colouration in recognition of the sheer size of this leviathan. The neck is thick, but the cervical vertebrae (neck bones) of these huge dinosaurs were quite delicate and there were numerous air sacs to help lighten the neck.

The skin texture is very detailed, and this herbivorous giant has been given rows of dermal armour (osteoderms), which are most prominent over its vulnerable hips. The CollectA Deluxe Ruyangosaurus will make an interesting partner to the mostly geologically older genus Mamenchisaurus, a model of which (CollectA Deluxe 1:100 Mamenchisaurus) was introduced by CollectA in 2021.

CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Brighstoneus

Hot on heels of the Ceratosuchops model announced last week, comes Brighstoneus an iguanodontid from the Isle of Wight that was, coincidently, formally named and described just a few weeks after Ceratosuchops in late 2021.

The reassessment of fossil bones found in 1978 close to the village of Brighstone on the south-western coast of the Isle of Wight, which had been thought to represent the genus Iguanodon, led to the naming of Brighstoneus (B. simmondsi).

CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Brighstoneus Model
The CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Popular Brighstoneus dinosaur model. This ornithopod figure should be available from Everything Dinosaur in early 2023.

Examination of the naris bone indicated that this dinosaur had a bulbous snout, and this feature has been incorporated into the new CollectA figure. The patterning on the model would have helped to camouflage this eight-metre-long herbivore and the white flash around the eye suggests that visual communication was very important to this animal that probably lived in herds.

This recently described dinosaur suggests that there are probably several different iguanodontids still awaiting discovery in the Wealden Group strata. It is great to see this model representing another member of the Wealden Group dinosaur biota added to the CollectA range.

CollectA Anomalocaris

The third in this trio of new CollectA models to be announced this week is a replica of the apex Cambrian predator Anomalocaris. This superb model of Anomalocaris canadensis from the famous Burgess Shale deposits of British Columbia joins a growing number of CollectA invertebrate models that represent iconic animals from the fossil record.

CollectA Anomalocaris
The CollectA Anomalocaris model. A fantastic replica of an early apex predator. The CollectA Anomalocaris (Other Prehistoric Animal Models).

Anomalocaris is distantly related to extant crustaceans such as lobsters and shrimps. It is considered to be at the top of the earliest marine food chains because of its large body size, formidable grasping claws armed with sharp spikes and a ferocious-looking circular mouth positioned under the head. Once thought to measure more than a metre in length, most Burgess Shale specimens indicate a typical body length of thirty centimetres, still much bigger than virtually all of the other animals known from these Canadian Cambrian-aged deposits.

Model Measurements

  • CollectA Deluxe Ruyangosaurus (1:100 scale) – length 40 cm, height of head 29.5 cm.
  • CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Popular Brighstoneus – length 14.8 cm, height of head 4.8 cm.
  • CollectA Anomalocaris (Other Prehistoric Animals) – length 13 cm, height 3 cm.

This trio of fantastic CollectA figures are scheduled to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in the early part of 2023.

New CollectA Models 2023

CollectA intend to make new model announcements over the next few weeks (November 2022). Everything Dinosaur will create a video review of the new prehistoric animal models that are scheduled to come out next year, and in these videos, some of the science behind the figures will be highlighted.

The first of our YouTube videos showcasing the new CollectA models (part 1), is just under thirteen minutes and forty-five seconds in length (13:45). Each model is featured in its own specific section, with fossils associated with these iconic dinosaurs included and we examine some of the features on the models such as the large scales on the neck of the Hadrosaurus foulkii replica and the bright orange eye crests of the fishing Ceratosuchops (C. inferodios).
