Today (Wednesday 14th October), Everything Dinosaur joins fossil enthusiasts, scientists and museums in celebrating National Fossil Day 2026. This annual American-led event highlights the importance of fossils and the remarkable insights they provide into the history of life on Earth.
Established in 2010 by the United States National Park Service, National Fossil Day encourages people to learn about palaeontology and geology. It also promotes the protection and preservation of our precious fossil heritage. Although the event originated in America, its message resonates with fossil enthusiasts around the world.
Why Are Fossils So Important?
Fossils provide a fascinating window into the past. From tiny marine invertebrates to enormous dinosaurs, these ancient remains help scientists reconstruct long-extinct ecosystems. Moreover, fossils provide evidence of evolution, changing climates and major extinction events. Every new discovery has the potential to transform our understanding of prehistoric life.
For example, fossil discoveries have helped palaeontologists establish the evolutionary relationship between theropod dinosaurs and modern birds.

However, fossils are more than scientific specimens. They also inspire curiosity and encourage the next generation to explore the natural world.
Celebrating Our Remarkable Fossil Heritage
The UK has a rich palaeontological heritage. Famous fossil-hunting locations, such as the Jurassic Coast, have yielded extraordinary evidence of prehistoric life. Indeed, pioneering fossil collectors, including Mary Anning, helped establish palaeontology as a scientific discipline.

Today, researchers continue to make exciting discoveries. New techniques and technologies allow scientists to investigate fossils in extraordinary detail.
For example, we recently published an article about how researchers have been able to calculate the body temperature of Tyrannosaurus rex!

At Everything Dinosaur, we are passionate about sharing the science of palaeontology. We believe that fossils provide a wonderful opportunity to inspire learning and encourage an appreciation of Earth’s natural history.
Happy National Fossil Day 2026!
Whether you are a professional palaeontologist, an enthusiastic fossil collector or simply curious about dinosaurs, today is an opportunity to celebrate our planet’s amazing prehistoric past.
After all, every fossil has a story to tell!
