Important Announcement from Everything Dinosaur About U.S. Sales

The continuing trade war between the United States and China is going to have severe consequences for American sales of dinosaur toys and models. On April 7th, Everything Dinosaur announced that the company would be suspending sales to the USA due to the on-going uncertainties with regards to the level of tariffs likely to be incurred by sales to the USA. This decision was taken in response to an Executive Order (14256), that removed the de minimis threshold of $800 USD for all parcels entering the USA containing goods with China/Hong Kong as the country of origin.

New Tariffs on Dinosaur Models and Toys

The original Executive Order published April 2nd (14256) confirmed the removal of the de minimis threshold of $800 USD on all parcels entering the USA containing goods with China/Hong Kong stated as the country of origin. These new tariffs were to come into force at 12:01 am EST on May 2nd.

The rates set were:

30% tariff on each parcel

OR

a payment of $25 USD per item from 12:01 am EST on May 2nd rising to $50 USD per item from 12:01 am EST on June 1st.

Therefore, a parcel containing 1 dinosaur model of Chinese origin that costed the equivalent of $30 USD to purchase (including shipping into the USA) would from midnight on May 2nd cost $55. This is calculated by adding the $25 USD tariff to the original price of the item with shipping $30 USD, a total of $55 USD.

Executive Order 14259

There has been a flurry of executive orders. It is difficult for us and our customers to keep up with all the developments. Another Executive Order (14259) was published on April 8th. It increased the level of tariffs to be imposed.

This Executive Order 14259 stated:

The rate of duty set forth in section 2(c)(i) of Executive Order 14256 from 30 percent to 90 percent (ad valorem).
Increase the per postal item containing goods duty in section 2(c)(ii) of Executive Order 14256 that is in effect on or after 12:01 am EST on May 2, 2025, and before 12:01 am EST on June 1, 2025, from $25 USD to $75.
Increase the per postal item containing goods duty in section 2(c)(ii) of Executive Order 14256 that is in effect on or after 12:01 am EST on June 1, 2025, from $50 USD to $150 USD

Based on our understanding, these amended tariffs would mean that for a dinosaur model costing $30 USD the price would increase to $105 USD from May 2nd. On June 1st, this item would rise in price to $180 USD.

Committed to Helping Customers

The company remained committed to trying to help American customers. Team members were doing all they could to prevent parcel’s destined for the USA being held indefinitely. In addition, work was on-going to find ways to reduce any price increases for American collectors and model fans.

“Things are very much up in the air at the moment. We are still scheduled to suspend all sales in the USA from noon [12 noon BST (7 am EST) Tuesday 15th April]. However, we continue to collaborate with international carriers, the United States Postal service and other key parties to find a solution for our American customers.”

A New Carcharodontosaurid Dinosaur is Described

Time to catch up on this year’s dinosaur discoveries. For instance, a new species of North African carcharodontosaurid was described recently. The fragmentary fossil material representing Tameryraptor markgrafi was excavated during the expedition to Egypt led by the famous German palaeontologist Ernst Stromer von Reichenbach. The naming of this new dinosaur (Kellermann, Cuesta and Rauhut), demonstrates that the theropods of the Bahariya Oasis and the Moroccan Kem Kem Group are not as closely related as previously thought. Researchers have stated that the proposed faunal similarities between these two strata need further examination.

Tameryraptor markgrafi

The partial skeleton from the Egyptian Bahariya Oasis, found in April 1914, consisted of elements from the skull, a partial dorsal vertebra, upper limb ones, the proximal end of the pubis and part of a caudal vertebra. It was described by Stromer in 1931. The material was first assigned to the species Megalosaurus saharicus, which had been described from isolated teeth found in geologically older rocks in Algeria. Unfortunately, almost all of the material from the Bahariya Oasis, including these fossils was destroyed during a bombing raid in World War II.

A detailed reassessment of the available information on the Egyptian carcharodontosaurid, including a previously undescribed photograph of the exhibited specimen, revealed that it differed from the Moroccan Carcharodontosaurus saharicus in several ways. It also possessed a horn-like rugosity on the nasal bone. These unique characteristics permitted the research team to confidently reassign these fossils, removing them from the C. saharicus taxon and allowing the naming of a new species of North African theropod.

The fossils were discovered around two kilometres from Ain Gedid on the Western foot of the Gebel Harra in basal layers of hardened, gypsum-free marl. The fossil material is thought to be around ninety-five million years old (Cenomanian faunal stage of the Late Cretaceous).

Based on the photographic evidence and a single endocast of the skull that remains, palaeontologists have estimated that Tameryraptor was around ten metres long.

The Etymology of Tameryraptor

The genus name is derived from one of the more informal names for Egypt (ta-mery), which means beloved land and the Latin word for thief (raptor). The species name honours Austrian fossil collector Richard Markgraf, who discovered most of the dinosaur remains described by Ernst Stromer von Reichenbach.

An Exclusive Arctodus simus Scale Drawing from Everything Dinosaur

Everything Dinosaur has commissioned an Arctodus simus scale drawing for the company’s free fact sheet on this giant prehistoric bear. The illustration is to be used in Everything Dinosaur’s free fact sheet on the Giant short-faced bear (A. simus). It is to be sent out with sales of the new for 2025 CollectA 1:20 scale model that is due into stock shortly.

The largest males weighed over nine hundred kilograms and were nearly 1.7 metres high at the shoulder. When they reared up, perhaps to intimidate other animals, they stood around 3.4 metres tall. The Arctodus simus towers over our human figure used in the scale drawing.

This illustration has been prepared in response to the imminent arrival of the new CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale Arctodus simus model.

A Remarkable Claim – The De-extinction of the Dire Wolf

An American biotech firm has claimed that their gene editing techniques has led to dire wolf de-extinction. The front cover of the prestigious “Time” magazine features a remarkable photograph of an oversized wolf staring back at the camera. It is a powerful image, a testament to advances in gene manipulation and editing undertaken by Colossal Biosciences. However, the young wolves named Romulus, Remus along with a younger female named Khaleesi are not Aenocyon dirus.

Dire Wolf De-extinction

Early this month, Colossal Biosciences announced the rebirth of the once extinct dire wolf (A. dirus). It was claimed this was the world’s first successfully de-extincted animal.

Commenting on the company’s work CEO Ben Lamm stated:

” I could not be more proud of the team. This massive milestone is the first of many coming examples demonstrating that our end-to-end de-extinction technology stack works.”

He added:

“Our team took DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull and made healthy dire wolf puppies. It was once said, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Today, our team gets to unveil some of the magic they are working on and its broader impact on conservation.”

Dr Beth Shapiro (Chief Science Officer) explained that the company’s novel approach to improving an ancient genome in the absence of more complete material set a new standard in gene management.

Team members at Everything Dinosaur first came across Dr Shapiro’s research a decade ago. Dr Shapiro had written an intriguing book outlining how modern science and gene manipulation could result in the de-extinction of the Woolly Mammoth.

Dr Shapiro commented:

“Together with improved approaches to recover ancient DNA, these computational advances allowed us to resolve the evolutionary history of dire wolves and establish the genomic foundation for de-extinction – specifically for selecting with confidence dire wolf specific genetic variants that establish our targets for gene editing.”

Challenging the De-extinction of Aenocyon dirus

Whilst the birth of these canids represents a considerable achievement. Many scientists have cast doubts on the claim that these three animals represent a revival of a long extinct taxon. The idea that the dire wolf has been resurrected has been challenged. Extinction remains permanent. Instead, the scientists at Colossal Biosciences have used synthetic biology technologies to identify in ancient DNA from dire wolf remains key segments of the genetic code that could be manipulated to produce a modified grey wolf (Canis lupus).

In essence, what has been produced is a grey wolf but with some dire wolf-like traits, such as the larger skull and white fur.

Implications for Conservation

The research may have important applications in helping to maintain healthy populations of highly endangered animals. For example, Colossal Biosciences have also produced two litters of red wolves from three different genetic founder lines. The red wolf (Canis rufus) is the most critically endangered wolf in the world. These litters include one adolescent female red wolf (Hope) and three male red wolf puppies (Blaze, Cinder, and Ash).

“They are beautiful animals, and they represent an example of the huge advances being made in biosciences. However, numerous academics and scientists have stated that they are not dire wolves but essentially a modified grey wolf that has some physical traits that represent a different species”.

Colossal Biosciences are continuing to research the de-extinction of other iconic animals. For example, they are examining the possibility of resurrecting the Thylacine. In addition, CEO Ben Lamm has claimed that the first Woolly Mammoth calves produced using this type of technology might be born within three years.

An Important Announcement from Everything Dinosaur

Here is an important announcement from Mike and Sue of Everything Dinosaur.

An Important Announcement for our Customers Based in the USA

On April 2nd, 2025, the President of the United States announced a series of “Reciprocal Tariffs” on goods coming into the United States. The UK has had a blanket levy of 10% placed on all imports into the USA. In addition, further tariffs have been imposed on individual sectors such as the car industry.

Compared to tariffs imposed on other nations, the 10% levy remains relatively modest. Although such tariffs are not welcomed, this level of imposition underscores the fair and balanced trade that has characterised the relationship between UK businesses and the USA. Additionally, it positions the UK as a reliable and fair trading partner in its dealings with the United States.

However, further to the imposition of these tariffs a Presidential Executive Order was published stating that parcels arriving in the USA containing goods from China and Hong Kong will no longer qualify for the $800 USD duty-free de minimis threshold from May 2nd. This Executive Order not only applies to parcels sent from China and Hong Kong but to any parcel sent to the USA which contains items made in China or Hong Kong.

From May 2nd, each parcel will attract a duty of either 30% of the value or $25 USD per item rising to $50 USD per item from 1st June.

Since the majority of dinosaur and prehistoric animal figures are made in China, we foresee that the removal of the $800 USD duty-free de minimis threshold coupled with these new parcel tariffs on goods where the country of origin is China/Hong Kong is going to have a significant impact on sales of such figures to the United States.

It is likely therefore, that the imposition of these new tariffs will lead to substantial price rises for dinosaur and prehistoric animal figures for buyers in the USA.

The global situation remains fluid, and we note the ongoing discussions between governments to reduce and eliminate tariffs.

However, given these new tariffs we at Everything Dinosaur have reluctantly decided to suspend all sales into the USA from noon BST (7am EST) on Tuesday 15th April.

In light of the increased tariffs, we have made the difficult decision to suspend sales to the USA. We will continue to closely monitor the situation, and we hope that these trading issues are quickly resolved.

We would like to assure our customers that Everything Dinosaur’s sales to all other international markets continue without any disruption.

A Helpful Script for an Everything Dinosaur YouTube Short Introducing New Nanmu Studio Figures

Recently, Everything Dinosaur created a YouTube short about the new articulated Nanmu Studio figures. These six theropod models have numerous points of articulation. They have been skilfully crafted, and all six figures are popular with collectors. As a result, we wanted to highlight these models in a brief video. The video was posted on-line earlier this week. It was posted onto our social media pages. In addition, we wrote a short blog post that featured the video: New Nanmu Studio Articulated Dinosaur Figures in Stock.

Producing a Script for the Video Subtitles

Accurate subtitles are essential when it comes to making video content more accessible. Automatic AI generated subtitles are helpful and promote inclusivity. However, the complex dinosaur names and terms featured in our videos often lead to errors in the automatic subtitles. We at Everything Dinosaur recognise we make videos for a diverse audience. We want to be as inclusive as possible. By providing accurate and meaningful subtitles, we can help those viewers who are hard of hearing or deaf to fully engage with our content.

So, we manually created our own subtitles for this YouTube short.

An Exclusive Furcatoceratops Scale Drawing from Everything Dinosaur

Everything Dinosaur team members have commissioned a Furcatoceratops scale drawing. The drawing is being used in the company’s exclusive Furcatoceratops (F. elucidans) fact sheet. This fact sheet will be sent out free of charge to customers who purchase the new for 2025 CollectA Prehistoric Life Furcatoceratops model.

Formally named and described just two years ago (2023), Furcatoceratops fossils are associated with the Judith River Formation of Montana.

The holotype (NSM PV 24660) was first described in 2015. It was thought to represent an Avaceratops (A. lammersi). This centrosaurine, also from the Judith River Formation had been described in 1986 (Dodson). However, subsequent analysis of the fossil material, believed to represent a subadult led to the establishment of the Furcatoceratops genus.

An assessment of bodyweight based on measurements of the left femur indicate that this dinosaur might have weighed around five hundred kilograms. Researchers estimate that this horned dinosaur was around four metres long when fully grown. Everything Dinosaur team members have used these calculations as their basis for their Furcatoceratops scale drawing.

The Unique Lyme Regis Fossil Festival Map is Printed

The 2025 Lyme Regis Fossil Festival map has been printed. Everything Dinosaur is one of the main sponsors of this year’s festival. This exciting event is to take place over the weekend of June 14th and June 15th (2025). The map explains where in the town the various events and activities will be held. The large red arrow on the map highlights the Everything Dinosaur logo.
