Special Dinosaurs Help Young Children with Phonics

Tripping off the Tongue – Dinosaur Names

A number of teachers and learning support providers are using dinosaur names to help young children to appreciate and understand the sounds of words. As dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals seem to be very popular with young children, so these long extinct creatures can prove very helpful when it comes to supporting phonics based teaching.  A three-year-old happily tells us all about their favourite dinosaur, a Stegosaurus, yet the same child struggles to come to terms with the correct pronunciation of the own surname.

Diplodocus Not a Problem to a Budding Fossil Hunter

Why do children love talking about dinosaurs?  This is one of the intriguing questions asked of the Everything Dinosaur teaching team as they prepare to put together more lesson plans and schemes of work aimed at Foundation Stage children.  The ability to say correctly the name Diplodocus (and to correct anyone who does not pronounce the word properly), has been observed by many teachers as well as parents and guardians.  It seems that Diplodocus may not be a problem but saying “daffodil” or “digital” can be quite a challenge to a young palaeontologist.  Even the word “palaeontologist” does not seem to phase them.

Everything Dinosaur’s experts were not aware of any study being currently undertaken into this specific element of children’s phonics and their grasp of speech.  Research has shown that young children up to the age of seven have an astonishing ability to pick up speech, language skills and enhance their vocabulary.  The sound of the words, particularly if accompanied with a picture of the prehistoric animal might make learning new words and sounds exciting.

Dinosaurs

The longest genus name, Everything Dinosaur’s staff were able to recall is Micropachycephalosaurus (mike-cro-pack-ee-sep-hal-oh-sore-us).  That’s a hefty twenty-three letters long.  Could dinosaur name pronunciation leave a tingle on the tongue?  Certainly, most young children learning about dinosaurs seem to relish and enjoy saying the names of dinosaurs.

There might be a strong sense of achievement after the pronunciation, as for many young children, the names of dinosaurs might be the longest and most complicated words that the child has encountered.  Children could be picking up cues from parents who might be expressing a strong sense of pride as their child says Tyrannosaurus rex, just like an accomplished academic.

Dinosaur Names Help Teachers

A number of parents, learning support providers and home educators have exploited a child’s fascination with dinosaurs to help them with their writing, reading and sentence construction.  If the young pupil loves Stegosaurus, then using this Late Jurassic plant-eating dinosaur in a fun activity to look at how to pronounce words and to get to grips with writing is a bit like pushing at an already open door.

Achievosaurs Helping to Develop Essential Learning Skills in EYFS

By |2024-05-02T12:20:50+01:00August 29th, 2014|Categories: Early Years Foundation Reception|Comments Off on Achievosaurs Helping to Develop Essential Learning Skills in EYFS

Developing Key Learning Skills – Thanks to Dinosaurs

Children either entering formal education or at an early stage of their careers in school can be helped to develop important skills thanks to dinosaurs.  Many learning support providers are keen to drive a culture of development and achievement, reinforcing key learning skills that will serve the students throughout their education.  Developing learning skills can form part of a coordinated plan to improve life-long learning.

The “Achievosaurs”, or as they are sometimes referred to as the “Achieveosaurs”, aims to teach children about positive ways in which their ability to learn can improved.  Qualities such as being determined and staying focused on a task, being prepared to ask questions and share ideas are rewarded by permitting the child to look after one of the “Achievosaurs” – a dinosaur soft toy which represents a character that shows that key skill.

One of the “Achievosaurs” Dinosaur Soft Toy Ranges

Soft Toy Dinosaurs

A set of soft toy dinosaurs can be used to help reinforce these key learning skills.  Staff members at Everything Dinosaur, with their teaching backgrounds have assisted learning support providers by offering all sorts of innovative learning materials for use in schools and nurseries.  For instance, a large number of schools use Everything Dinosaur’s soft toys to help deliver the “Achievosaurs” teaching concept.  However, as manufacturers alter their product ranges, so many of the dinosaur soft toys used in the original schemes of work become unavailable.  No worries, as Everything Dinosaur specialises in the supply of prehistoric animal toys and games, our team members are on hand to provide advice and to help teachers develop the “Achievosaurs” teaching concept.

Adopting the “Achievosaurs” Concept

Many schools adopt the “Achievosaurs” concept across all their classes in Early Years and Reception through into upper Key Stage 1, it often ties in with a related term topic covered by the children in Year 1 and 2 which enables them to learn about rocks, fossils and dinosaurs.

Key Learning Skills Typically Covered in the “Achievosaurs” Teaching Concept

  • SOLVEOSAURUS REX – I can solve problems and improve (based on T. rex the most famous dinosaur of all)
  • TRYCERATOPS – I try new things, don’t give up and work really hard (based on Triceratops, a very well known horned dinosaur with three horns)
  • STICKASAURUS  – I stick at tasks and persevere (based on Stegosaurus a popular, plant eating dinosaur with plates on its back)
  • THINKODOCUS – I think carefully about what I learn (based on the big, plant-eating dinosaur called Diplodocus)
  • SHAREOSAURUS – I share my ideas and can work well with others (based on the Spinosaurus)

Helping young children to develop such important skills for learning later on in life.  Teachers are free to come up with their own variants and new additions, this is where our team members can help, by advising on educational matters and guiding teachers as to their choice of prehistoric animal to represent the particular skill or learning behaviour that they wish to develop with their class.  After all, what five-year-old can refuse the chance to look after their very own soft toy dinosaur?

What we do – Helping to Educate and Inform

Every day, team members at Everything Dinosaur receive drawings, pictures, photographs, letters and questions from school children and other young dinosaur fans.  We try our best to respond to all those that require a reply.  We encourage creative writing as part of the extension activities that lead on from our dinosaur workshops in schools, as a result, we get lots and lots of letters, stories and fact sheets sent in.

Everything Dinosaur

We read them all and we are grateful for every one that we get.  We do our best to acknowledge all that we receive and we have prehistoric animal fans all over the world.  This fact was brought home to us, when over the last two days we have had correspondence from the United States, Canada, India, Australia, Spain and Mexico.

Everything Dinosaur Helps to Inform and Educate

It seems like a long time ago now, but when our happy band got together we set about creating a mission statement, a sort of who we are, what we do and why do we do it.  Other organisations had such things and we thought we ought to have one too.  As a teaching team, we wanted to help inform and educate and our mission statement for our work in schools reflects this.

Everything Dinosaur

Teaching Mission Statement

“Everything Dinosaur’s aim is to help motivate young people to learn more about Earth sciences by participating in hands-on, dinosaur themed teaching activities and dinosaur workshops.  Our mission is to engage and inspire the next generation of young scientists by having dinosaurs and fossils in school.”

Every day we receive letters, drawings, photographs, pictures all sorts of things from schoolchildren.  It is always a pleasure to see them.  We encourage creative writing as part of our work in schools and as a result we get lots of thank you letters, stories and fact sheets sent in.

Dinosaurs and Fossils as Teaching Topics

By |2023-03-14T15:05:18+00:00August 1st, 2014|Categories: General Teaching|Comments Off on Dinosaurs and Fossils as Teaching Topics

Fossils and Dinosaurs Inspire the Next Generation of Young Scientists

Teachers, home educators and other learning support providers often find that a child’s fascination with fossils and dinosaurs can help them with their studies at school.  With the teaching profession now handling a more creative curriculum, many members of the teaching fraternity are using children’s love of all things dinosaur to help encourage them to participate in science based learning and to explore concepts such as observation, investigation and experimentation.

Dinosaur Themed Teaching activities

Everything Dinosaur team members have described this as “like using Triceratops as a Trojan Horse”.  Pupils can learn key scientific skills and explore concepts using a range of activities enabling plenty of differentiation in the classroom.  A new dinosaur species is named every thirty days or so and something in the region of 1,250 genera in the Dinosauria have already been described.  These ancient reptiles certainly have a high media profile and a child’s interest in fossils and dinosaurs can help teaching practitioners to develop inspiring lesson plans.

Providing Teaching Examples

Let’s look at some typical examples, with an emphasis on pupils studying the national curriculum at Key Stage 2 (England and Wales).  The difficult to comprehend concept of “deep time” can be illustrated using a simple timeline.  Children can plot on the timeline the dates when certain types of prehistoric animal lived.  This timeline idea can be developed to incorporate when dinosaurs lived relative to the people the children may have already studied such as the Ancient Egyptians and the Romans.

By plotting a to-scale time line showing the age of reptiles, students, under the supervision of the teaching team can construct a linear diagram that demonstrates when certain dinosaurs lived and relates this time to the time of Ancient Rome, the Greeks and such like.  With a time scale of approximately 1 centimetre representing 1 million years the children can place events in the correct order, an objective outlined within the national  curriculum teaching objectives and aims.  Pupils can gain an appreciation of which dinosaurs lived in which geological period and what other prehistoric animals were around at the same time.

Additional resources, many of which are available free from Everything Dinosaur,  can then be employed to help the children to learn more about individual animals such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops.  This leads onto further extension activities such as independent learning about that dinosaur, poster creation, creative writing, story telling and so forth.

A Handy Tip

My tip when making a timeline with school children is to use a scale of one million years equates to one centimetre and to plot the timeline over a period of 250 million years to the present day.  This gives teachers a timeline of some 2.5 metres in length, easily big enough to fit nicely on a classroom wall and it makes a great display.

Working with EYFS

Dinosaurs lend themselves to working with reception/foundation children.  When consulting on Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS),  it is important to help children understand the nature of materials and the world around them.  The EYFS framework has recently been revised with new teaching standards incorporated for early years providers.  This teaching framework helps to prepare reception/foundation children for school and ensures that children develop the key skills required to help them make good progress.

Many teachers are making “Dinosaurs” the first, major topic that the children encounter.  Dinosaur models and fossils can help them to explore the properties of different materials and even dinosaur toys can help them learn about different parts of the human body.  Basic selection and counting games can be encouraged such as selecting all the models of prehistoric creatures that have four legs,  count the number of red ones and so forth.  The children are effectively learning through creative play.

Introducing Mathematical and Scientific Concepts

For children at the upper Key Stage 2, cusp of Key Stage 3, a maths lesson can be made more challenging and fun by utilising a dinosaur track with dinosaur footprints.  The pupils can familiarise themselves with accurate measuring, use of scale and from this comparisons can be made with their own feet and hands.  Such simple, yet imaginative props can really enliven a maths lesson and help to get across important concepts and ideas.

At one school, a member of the Senior Leadership Team was asked to step in and conduct a hour long maths class with a group of  year 7 children (Key Stage 3 age 11-12 years).  He consulted one of Everything Dinosaur’s dinosaur experts and borrowed some footprint drawings and laid out a series of dinosaur tracks in the school hall.  The class was split into groups and the students challenged to use rulers and tape measures to  work out as much information about the prehistoric animal that left the tracks as possible.

Stimulating Lesson Plans

The lesson plan included a section on using scale drawings and calculating the average (the mean).  It was a very memorable and rewarding lesson that helped the students get to grips with simple scientific ideas such as plotting, mapping and using basic equations.

Helping to Inspire the Next Generation of Scientists

A teaching team can use children’s interest in prehistoric animals to help them learn about the world around them.  A dinosaur themed term topic or a series of activities as part of a science week permits teachers to develop imaginative and engaging lessons.  Importantly, it also means that such plans will permit plenty of differentiation and extension as well as dove-tailing into the different needs of pupils and learning styles.
