Spring Clean for a Rare Allosaurus

By |2024-05-11T17:52:28+01:00March 21st, 2021|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Photos/Pictures of Fossils, Press Releases|0 Comments

We have been asked to update an exhibit featuring the dinosaur Allosaurus. Our work will involve providing information for use on display boards next to a reconstruction of this Late Jurassic theropod.

A Spring Clean for Allosaurus

As part of our work to update the text associated with this dinosaur exhibit, we will be adding information about Allosaurus jimmadseni – a new species within this genus named and described in 2020.

An Allosaurus skeleton.
Note the narrow lower jaw, reflecting studies that show a relatively weak bite. Everything Dinosaur team members have been asked to provide an update on this iconic Late Jurassic dinosaur genus.

First Described in 1877

Allosaurus was named and described by the American palaeontologist Othniel Charles Marsh in 1877, on the basis of fragmentary remains including a single fossil tooth and a toe bone. The subsequent discovery of many thousands of fossils including nearly complete skeletons, most famously from the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry in Emery County, Utah, has made Allosaurus one of the best-known of all the big meat-eating dinosaurs. Size estimates vary but it may have grown to more than 12 metres in length and weighed around 2.5 tonnes (depending on species).

The picture (above) shows an Allosaurus roaring figure from the CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Popular range.

The State Fossil of Utah

In 1988, in recognition of the abundance of Allosaurus fossil material excavated from the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, Allosaurus was appointed the state fossil of Utah.

Several species of Allosaurus have been erected since it was first scientifically described, although most palaeontologists recognise just three species, the most recent of which to be named is Allosaurus jimmadseni (2020). This species was named in honour of James H. Madsen Jr. the first state palaeontologist of Utah.

How Would You Expand the Papo Model Range? That’s a Great Question

By |2024-05-22T20:55:57+01:00March 17th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|1 Comment

Fans of the Papo prehistoric animal model range “Les Dinosaures”, will know that in 2021 there will be just two new figures added to this range. Like many model manufacturers the production plans of our chums at Papo have been affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Papo are always keen to hear from model collectors, they know how enthusiastic and passionate you are about Papo, so Everything Dinosaur has created a short, ten minute video that explores how Papo could expand its prehistoric animal model range. Once we have discussed our suggestions, it’s over to you! Your chance to comment on the type of figures you want to see added to the Papo range!

Suggestions for Papo Figures

Everything Dinosaur has a close working relationship with Papo, in our short YouTube video (the video is 10 minutes long), we reveal what product options we have suggested to the French manufacturer. For example, we suggested that Papo might want to reintroduce a long retired figure such as the iconic green, standing T. rex replica.

Could Papo reintroduce their classic green, standing T. rex
Could Papo reintroduce a classic model such as the original green, standing T. rex figure (product code 55001)?

Visit the Everything Dinosaur website: Everything Dinosaur.

A Pteranodon Colour Variant?

In addition, Everything Dinosaur has proposed that Papo could introduce a colour variant of an existing figure such as the Papo Pteranodon or the Papo Triceratops. We note that a number of Papo fans have suggested other colour variants such as a new version of the huge Papo Brachiosaurus figure.

Could Papo introduce a Pteranodon colour variant?
Perhaps Papo could add a colour variant of the Papo Pteranodon figure. The new colour variant could be the male whilst the original figure could be the female.

A Juvenile Giganotosaurus?

One further suggestion Everything Dinosaur has made is to introduce a juvenile Giganotosaurus dinosaur model as a companion piece to the 2020 Papo Giganotosaurus figure.

The 2020 Giganotosaurus model attracted a lot of attention due to its posture, a smaller, juvenile figure could have a more scientifically accurate pose.

Everything Dinosaur suggests that Papo should introduce a juvenile Giganotosaurus model
Should Papo introduce a juvenile Giganotosaurus to accompany the adult model that was introduced in 2020?

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Papo are aware how passionate fans of their figures are when it comes to new replicas. The number of new models that can be introduced in 2021 has been limited due to the consequences of COVID-19. Our new YouTube video gives dinosaur model fans the opportunity to learn more about the Papo range and to propose novel ways in which this range can be expanded.”

New Mythical Realms Armoured T. rex Model in Stock

By |2024-05-10T11:02:20+01:00March 16th, 2021|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

The Safari Ltd Mythical Realms armoured T. rex dinosaur model is now in stock at Everything Dinosaur. This is the third of five new dinosaur models to be introduced by Safari Ltd this year (2021), an armoured Triceratops and a model of the theropod Baryonyx have already arrived at Everything Dinosaur.

Mythical Realms T. rex dinosaur model.
Safari Ltd have extended their Mythical Realms line by adding an armoured T. rex dinosaur model to this range. This model has an articulated lower jaw.

An Armoured Carnivorous Dinosaur

This cleverly designed dinosaur has armour on the top of its head. The tyrannosaur sports a breast plate, armour on its shoulders and protecting its ribs. There are three large plates of armour over the thigh and additional protection running down to the foot. The tail has a vicious-looking spiky club. A most impressive weapon one that would make an Ankylosaurus jealous.

Model Measurements

The Safari Ltd Mythical Realms armoured T. rex dinosaur model measures approximately 17 cm in length. In reality the model is bigger than this, as the tail is curved round on itself. That armoured head is around 11 cm off the ground.

Preparing a Beautiful Dilophosaurus Display

By |2024-05-10T11:02:43+01:00March 15th, 2021|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur team members have been busy over the last few weeks as they help events companies, museums and other attractions prepare for the eagerly awaited easing of lockdown restrictions in the UK.

We have been asked to write a series of display panels for a number of dinosaur and prehistoric animal exhibits that will be opening (hopefully) in the summer. One dinosaur that has featured in this work is the Early Jurassic theropod from the western United States – Dilophosaurus (D. wetherilli).

Double Crested Lizard

With an estimated body length of around 6 metres, Dilophosaurus is one of the largest predators known from the Early Jurassic of North America. Fragmentary fossils of this dinosaur were discovered in 1942 in northern Arizona on Navajo Nation territory by a team of palaeontologists from the University of California who were assisted in their excavations by their Navajo Indian guide. The badly eroded fossil bones were carefully prepared and the first scientific description of this material was published in 1954. It was erroneously thought that the fossils represented a new type of Megalosaurus – a dinosaur known from the Early Jurassic of Europe.

Dilophosaurus wetherilli holotype material.
Dilophosaurus wetherilli holotype specimen (UCMP 37302): (1–4) articulated right side of the skull and line drawings. Plus (5, 6) nasolacrimal crest, (7, 8) left postorbital, (9, 10) left lacrimal, (11, 12) left quadratojugal, and (13, 14) left squamosal in (1, 2, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13) lateral and (3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14) medial view. Picture credit: Marsh et al (Journal of Palaeontology).

Fossilised Crests Found in 1964

Expedition team members returned to the site in 1964 and uncovered more fossil bones including a partial skull with unusual bony crests. This dinosaur was subsequently re-described and named Dilophosaurus in 1970.

Dilophosaurus is one of the most extensively studied of all the carnivorous dinosaurs. A recent review, published in 2020, suggested that Dilophosaurus was a much more powerful animal than previously thought. It was probably an apex predator rather than a weak-jawed scavenger. The crests may have been brightly coloured and were probably used for display or played a role in thermoregulation – helping Dilophosaurus to keep cool, functioning in the same way as the casques on the heads of large, flightless birds such as cassowaries.

Papo New Product Development – Teaser

By |2024-05-22T07:00:02+01:00March 13th, 2021|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur team members have been working on another Papo inspired YouTube video and they hope to have it completed, edited and posted up on the company’s channel in a few days. This latest video is a follow up to a Papo prehistoric animal model video posted up a few weeks ago that examined the strategy behind Papo’s product development. This new video will develop these themes and look at the way in which the French figure manufacture can expand their product range.

Papo Megalodon and Young Smilodon

Papo will introduce two prehistoric animal figures in 2021. The models are a replica of a young Smilodon and a model of the fearsome prehistoric shark Megalodon (C. megalodon). Both models are projected to be available around quarter 4 (2021), but Everything Dinosaur and Papo are working hard to try and bring these two figures into stock a little earlier.

Papo Model Introductions 2015-2021

In Everything Dinosaur’s video, team members will look at the options Papo have to expand their prehistoric animal model offering. The video will also document how the Papo model range has expanded over the years.  It will also discuss Papo product development.

The graph above shows the number of new sculpts (new figures) as well as new colour variants that have been introduced by Papo since 2015. This year, (2021) Papo will bring out just two figures, neither of which are dinosaurs.

New Model Suggestions

Everything Dinosaur’s YouTube video will also give viewers the opportunity to suggest new figures that Papo might like to make. The video also challenges fans of dinosaur models to think of other ways in which Papo can expand its “Les Dinosaures” range.

The Sensational PNSO Domingo the Carnotaurus Dinosaur Model

By |2024-05-21T07:17:53+01:00March 9th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases, Product Reviews|0 Comments

The PNSO Domingo the Carnotaurus dinosaur model has already attracted rave reviews from collectors and fans of dinosaur models. This 5-star rated figure has been described as “a beautiful model, at this moment the most accurate depiction of Carnotaurus” and “an amazing model, both colour and sculpt are stunning” by reviewers on Everything Dinosaur’s website.

This replica of a Late Cretaceous South American abelisaurid has certainly turned heads. The model is exquisitely detailed and so well made that the figure stands perfectly on a flat, level service without the aid of the transparent support stand that is supplied with this dinosaur model.

An Articulated Lower Jaw

Like a lot of the new theropod figures from PNSO, Domingo the Carnotaurus has an articulated lower jaw. The model designers have been careful to depict those famous horns over the eyes (from which this dinosaur’s name is derived, due to their superficial similarity to the horns of a bull). The colouration chosen shows evidence of countershading and the use of black stripes gives this figure real presence. Although the jaw of Carnotaurus is relatively small and delicate, the designers have taken heed of the fossil evidence and equipped their model with a narrow jaw, located in a disproportionately deep skull.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Fans of dinosaur models and figure collectors have really been looking forward to the arrival of the PNSO Domingo the Carnotaurus replica. It had a lot of hyperbole to live up with some collectors stating that PNSO was the most improved model manufacturer on the market. With the first reviews for this new for 2021 figure posted up on our website, it seems that collectors have not been disappointed.”

As we are preparing for the arrival of the latest batch of new for 2021 PNSO prehistoric animal models team members at Everything Dinosaur have been busy completing their Pinacosaurus fact sheet that will be sent out with sales of this armoured dinosaur model.

PNSO Pinacosaurus grangeri

Pronounced “pin-ack-oh-sore-us”, this Late Cretaceous armoured dinosaur is one of the best known of all the members of the Ankylosauridae family. Measuring up to five metres in length, this herbivorous, armoured dinosaur is known from numerous specimens representing juveniles and adult animals.

What Other PNSO Figures are Due in Stock?

About a dozen or so PNSO prehistoric animal figures are due to arrive at Everything Dinosaur’s new warehouse on Monday (8th March 2021). Team members are not quite sure when the figures will arrive but they are all on standby to help get them unloaded and on-line as quickly as possible.

All eight of the new for 2021 dinosaur models should be on this shipment plus some of the earlier models that were available at the factory when the container was being made ready for sending to the docks.

PNSO Age of Dinosaurs (Prehistoric Animal Figures)

PNSO have rapidly built an excellent reputation for their dinosaur and prehistoric animal models. Everything Dinosaur has worked with this Chinese company for many years and a spokesperson from the UK-based specialist mail order company stated:

“We are expecting A-Shu the Qianzhousaurus, Perez the Machairoceratops, along with the other new horned dinosaur figure A-Qi the Sinoceratops, plus Domingo the Carnotaurus and the new Wilson T. rex figure. In addition, the three new armoured dinosaurs Isaac the Sauropelta, Rosana the Miragaia and of course Bart the Pinacosaurus.”

However, given all the current difficulties with global logistics at the moment, team members will be thoroughly checking over the shipment prior to putting these models on-line.

The spokesperson added:

“There are so many problems with shipping goods at the moment. For example, this container was held at the UK port for several days simply because of the amount of congestion at the dockside. The inspection by UK Customs and Trading Standards did not hold up the shipment for too long, but we know that a number of the cartons will have been opened as part of the checking process so we will be spending time once the delivery has arrived in sorting out the boxes before these models can be put into our on-line shop.”

A Requiem for the “Crimson King”

When Everything Dinosaur announced that the original Rebor Carnotaurus model had been withdrawn and was out of production, we promised all those fans of the Rebor range who had joined our waitlist for this replica that we would contact them and offer them an alternative.  This is the figure we had in mind, a magnificent 1:35 scale model of Carnotaurus with such a striking, vibrant colour scheme.  This figure is viewed by Rebor as a replacement for the original Rebor Carnotaurus, hence the name “Crimson King Requiem”.

The second abelisaurid from Rebor that we have made available for pre-order is the Rebor Ekrixinatosaurus “Epitaph” museum class dinosaur model.  It is ironic that these two figures are available to pre-order today, as March 1st is Saint David’s Day.  Saint David is the patron saint of Wales and the dragon is one of the national symbols of this country.

Ekrixinatosaurus

Named and formally described in 2004, the fossilised remains of Ekrixinatosaurus helped palaeontologists to better understand the enigmatic Abelisauridae.  Ekrixinatosaurus (pronounced Ek-riks-in-at-oh-sore-us), is estimated to have measured around 6.5 to perhaps 7.5 metres in length.  It was approximately the same size as Carnotaurus sastrei, hence the models are both in 1/35 th scale and the same size.

New for 2021 Safari Ltd Models in Stock

New for 2021 Safari Ltd Models in Stock

The first of the new for 2021 Safari Ltd prehistoric animal models are in stock at Everything Dinosaur.  The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Baryonyx and the Mythical Realms armoured Triceratops have arrived at our warehouse.  These figures were due in March, but we were able to get these two models a little earlier than scheduled.  Safari Ltd will introduce a total of five new models this year, three dinosaurs and two armoured dinosaurs in the Mythical Realms series.

Safari Ltd Prehistoric Animal Models

The Daspletosaurus, quadrupedal Spinosaurus and the armoured Tyrannosaurus rex in the Mythical Realm series are due to arrive in April, but as with the armoured Triceratops and the Baryonyx models, Everything Dinosaur team members will try and get these a little ahead of schedule if possible.

Putting armour on dinosaurs is an intriguing idea. It permits Safari Ltd to extend their range of models in their Mythical Realms series which incorporates strange animals from legend and folklore such as werewolves, dragons, mermaids and the Yeti.  The armoured Triceratops figure reminds us of the sort of dinosaur associated with the fantasy world Dinotopia created by artist and author James Gurney, who wrote a series of books about an island populated by people and dinosaurs.

An “Amoured Dinosaur”

This brings a whole new meaning to the term “armoured dinosaur”.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“There are huge problems with global logistics at the moment.  The global coronavirus pandemic has left worldwide shipping in chaos.  There are extensive delays when it comes to the moving of goods around the world, the recent Chinese holidays associated with the Chinese Spring Festival otherwise known as the New Year Festival have added to the difficulties.  However, we had anticipated these problems and put contingencies in place which allowed us to bring in these two new for 2021 Safari Ltd figures slightly earlier than scheduled.”

Recently we were contacted by a collector in Russia who wanted to add to his Rebor figure collection by acquiring a Rebor GrabNGo T. rex dinosaur model.

The Rebor GrabNGo range was launched in 2019 with the introduction of the amazing Komodo dragon replica, a stunning half metre long model of the largest living lizard in the world. Our Russian customer wanted one of the Tyrannosaurus rex figures that were introduced into this range last year, specifically the Rebor GrabNGo T. rex dinosaur model – type A.

Choosing the Model Rebor T. rex Model

Our customer asked whether we could help him by taking photographs of the model before he made his purchase on-line. Our dedicated team members were happy to do this. We would pick out a Tyrannosaurus rex model for him, photograph it and set it aside on our reserve shelf in our warehouse. The customer could then place his order and we would than marry up his order with the model reserved for him and send it out.

The customer wanted a Rebor GrabNGo T. rex replica (type A), but one with lots of detail on the head and tight seams between the head and the rest of the body. We carefully chose a model from our extensive inventory, photographed it and emailed the images for the customer’s approval.
