Papo Prehistoric Animal Models on Display

At Everything Dinosaur, we are always keen to see how the prehistoric animal models that we supply are displayed. Our staff are constantly amazed by the incredible dinosaur dioramas and prehistoric landscapes that are built by our customers. Take for example, Donovan from Canada. An enthusiastic collector of Papo figures “Les Dinosaures”, Donovan has built a substantial display case for the Papo models within his collection.

Papo Prehistoric Animal Models on Display

The recent Everything Dinosaur purchases have been added to Donovan’s dinosaur diorama. The new for 2019 Papo Pentaceratops can be seen on the left of the picture (above), in between the huge Papo Brachiosaurus and just behind the Papo Ankylosaurus model. It had better look out as emerging from the trees we can see a Papo running T. rex model lurking, perhaps getting ready to ambush the unwary horned dinosaur!

Clever Use of Silhouettes

Providing a backdrop to the model display are some excellent silhouettes that help to provide an illusion of depth. They are very well drawn and we congratulate our Canadian customer for such a creatively constructed prehistoric landscape. There is certainly plenty of detail to admire, including a Therizinosaurus defending itself from an attacking Acrocanthosaurus and an unfortunate Styracosaurus that has been grabbed by a crocodile.

After providing permission for Everything Dinosaur to post up some pictures of his handiwork, Donovan explained that his personal prehistoric park took many hours to plan and to build, he commented:

“It took a lot of hard work for me to build that toy box/ display case. I hope to finish the bookshelf case this winter that will go with the toy box and display the other half of our Papo figures.”

What a Line Up! A Cornucopia of Ceratopsians

Everything Dinosaur team members have been taking an exclusive look at the up-and-coming Rebor Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) model, which is the first in a new product line entitled “GrabNGo”. This is a beautiful, highly detailed model of the largest living lizard, which is sometimes referred to as the Komodo monitor.

A 1:6 Scale Rebor Komodo Dragon Replica

The model measures a fraction under 48 centimetres in length, but when the curvature of that impressive tail is taken into account the model’s true size is around half a metre, making this a 1:6 scale replica. The skin texture has been skilfully created with accurate folds and appropriately proportioned digits. The underside of the body and tail also shows lots of amazing detail and scales, particularly along the underside of the neck and jaw, although our figure lacks a cloaca. The production sample we were kindly sent does not have a CE mark so the skin texture is uninterrupted along the entire animal’s length.

Dragon Skin

The lightweight but reinforced hollow vinyl material gives this figure a very solid feel and the subtle painting provides the viewer with an impression of an expensive desk-top figure. The Komodo dragon is renowned for its tough hide. The skin of this lizard, which can reach lengths of up to 2.6 metres and weigh in excess of 70 kilograms, is reinforced by tiny dermal scales (osteoderms). It is thought that this armour helps to prevent injury when it attacks large prey or during intraspecific combat.

The Megalania Connection

This Rebor GrabNGo figure could also be used to represent the extinct giant goanna of southern Australia – Megalania (Varanus priscus, or sometimes referred to as Megalania prisca). It has been proposed that Megalania represents a sister taxon to the Komodo dragon and like its Indonesian cousin, it was an apex predator within the ecosystem. Size estimates for Megalania vary but studies of fossilised dorsal vertebrae suggest a length of around 6 metres. If this is the case, then the Rebor GrabNGo model would equate to a 1:12 scale replica.

A Special Dinosaur Delivery

Everything Dinosaur has lots of customers in South America. Sometimes some of our customers visit the UK and they request that if they are staying in the UK, could they order some prehistoric animal models and have Everything Dinosaur despatch them to a UK address such as a hotel or guest house. By doing this, model collectors can get their hands on the latest prehistoric animal models, without having to worry about international deliveries.

A Dinosaur Delivery

Andre is a case in point. He contacted Everything Dinosaur some months ago requesting that we reserve some up and coming, 2019 dinosaur models for him. He explained that he would be travelling to London in September and if possible, could we liaise with him so that his models could be delivered to the hotel where he was staying. Sure enough, our team members were happy to oblige, to set aside the models he wanted as they came into stock and then organise a courier delivery to his hotel.

Delighted with our customer service, Andre kindly sent in a picture of the latest additions to his model collection.

In total, our team members organised the delivery of seven dinosaur figures from the Papo “les dinosaures” model range and the PNSO “Age of Dinosaurs” scale figures. We know that regular readers of our blog will be able to name all these replicas, but just for the record, here is the list of models that we sent out to Andre’s hotel.

Picturing a Papo Pentaceratops

One of the most enthusiastically received new prehistoric animal models of 2019 is the Papo Pentaceratops. When we first published photographs of this new horned dinosaur model from the French manufacturer (Papo), earlier this year, a number of collectors and dinosaur model fans commented on its unusual pose. After all, a rearing ceratopsid is very different from the postures normally associated with Triceratops, Torosaurus, Styracosaurus, Pachyrhinosaurus and so forth.

However, this dinosaur model has proved to be a big hit. Everything Dinosaur team members have received lots of photographs, positive feedback and drawings of this Papo dinosaur model. For example, young dinosaur fan Caldey sent in a beautiful illustration of her Papo Pentaceratops.

This translates from the Spanish as:

“Incredible model and painting, as well as versatility in the way that it has been posed.”

It seems that this prehistoric posture has been very well received indeed. Can we expect more posing prehistoric animals from Papo in the future? The Pentaceratops “five horned face”, or as they say in Chile “cara con cinco cuernos”, has gathered a world-wide following.

The Schleich Diabloceratops Dinosaur Model

The Schleich Diabloceratops dinosaur model is back in stock at Everything Dinosaur. This recently introduced ceratopsian figure (spring 2019), has proved to be a favourite amongst fans of Schleich and dinosaur models. Our initial stocks sold out quickly and it is great to see “devil horned face” back in our warehouse again.

The Schleich Diabloceratops eatoni

Known from a single skull discovered in 2002 and a second skull specimen found eight years later, Diabloceratops is the oldest known ceratopsid, it having roamed the upper parts of the United States some 79 million years ago. It is regarded as a basal centrosaurine and it was the first member of the Centrosaurinae to be have been discovered south of Montana. Zuniceratops (Z. christopheri), which is known from the mid Turonian of New Mexico, is regarded as the sister taxon.

What’s in a Name?

The genus name reflects the remarkable pair of horns that stick out from the back of the neck frill, whilst the species name honours vertebrate palaeontologist Jeff Eaton of Weber State University. The geosciences professor has been honoured for his work in Utah (where the Diabloceratops specimens originate). Professor Eaton has had a trace fossil, a lizard and a marsupial, as well as a dinosaur named after him. The holotype Diabloceratops fossil material consisting of a partial skull and elements from the jaw, along with a second skull ascribed to this genus in 2010, are housed in the Natural History Museum of Utah (Salt Lake City, Utah).

The fossils were excavated from the Wahweap Formation near Last Chance Creek in southern Utah.

The Schleich Diabloceratops has received many favourable reviews, including this one from a French-speaking Everything Dinosaur customer:

“Beau modèle avec couleurs splendides”, which translates as “beautiful model with splendid colours”.

The Fantastic CollectA Fukuiraptor Model

Praising the CollectA Prehistoric Life Fukuiraptor

Japan might not be that famous for its dinosaurs, although several Japanese dinosaurs have been named and described and we are expecting a new hadrosaurid to be announced from a substantial fossil found on the island of Hokkaido shortly*. Fukuiraptor, from Fukui Prefecture on the largest island that makes up the country of Japan (Honshu), is known from fragmentary remains and its taxonomic affinity remains controversial. However, those clever and talented model makers at CollectA were undeterred and this year, saw the introduction of a Fukuiraptor dinosaur model into the company’s “Prehistoric Life” model range.

Fukuiraptor A Lower Cretaceous Predator

The vast majority of the fossil material ascribed to Fukuiraptor (F. kitadaniensis), comes from excavation sites located along the banks of the Sugiyama River. The strata are estimated to be around 120 million years of age (late Barremian to Aptian faunal stages of the Early Cretaceous). This dinosaur was scientifically described nineteen years ago (Phil Currie and Yoichi Azuma), in the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences. It had been suggested that these fossils represented a large dromaeosaurid, however, more recent taxonomic assessment has suggested affinities with the Megaraptora.

Creating a Favourable Impression

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

Everything Dinosaur has compiled several reviews of this recently introduced dinosaur figure, including one from a French customer who described it as a “beau modèle”. It is pleasing to note that this figure has such an international appeal.

*A new species of hadrosaurid, assigned to the Edmontosaurini subfamily has been announced. It has been named Kamuysaurus japonicus and it lived at least forty million years after Fukuiraptor became extinct. Perhaps CollectA will make a model of Kamuysaurus in the future.

A Dinosaur in the Water

Amy has produced some very clever shots, including a very well composed photograph of her Papo model in water. Water lilies were around when Gorgosaurus roamed the Late Cretaceous landscape of Laramidia. Gorgosaurus would have been familiar with these flowering plants. The model is waterproof and the spines along the back make this dinosaur look a little crocodilian.

A Gorgosaurus Lurks! Gorgosaurus is Ready to Ambush Other Dinosaurs

Praising New Eofauna Models

New Eofauna Models Scheduled for Autumn 2019

Recently Everything Dinosaur in collaboration with Eofauna Scientific Research announced the introduction of two new prehistoric animal models for the autumn of 2019. The first model to be announced was a replica of the amazing African sauropod Atlasaurus. A few days later, a second new Eofauna prehistoric animal figure was announced, this time, it was a prehistoric elephant, a beautiful scale model of Deinotherium.

Oxfordian Britain – The Kingdom of Metriacanthosaurus parkeri

Our thanks once again to young Thomas who has spent part of his summer holiday compiling blog articles for Everything Dinosaur. In this, his second piece, he focuses on the theropod fauna of the Late Jurassic of the British Isles and in particular a dinosaur known as Metriacanthosaurus parkeri, fossils of which come from Dorset.

The Oxfordian in the UK is a rather mysterious faunal stage of the Late Jurassic, especially when it comes to what was living on land at the time. There are four described dinosaurs from this time one of which lived later in the Oxfordian than the others. These three are the metriacanthosaurid Metriacanthosaurus parkeri at 7.5 metres long and just over 2 metres tall, the megalosaurid Eustreptospondylus oxoniensis which had a juvenile length of 5 metres and hypothesised adult length of 6 metres and the ankylosaurian Priodontognathus phillipsii which was probably, only a few metres long, maybe 2 to 3 metres long.

Indeterminate Dinosaur Fossil Remains

Strata associated with the Oxfordian faunal stage, (early Late Jurassic), yields fragmentary, indeterminate dinosaur remains including an indeterminate sauropod found nearby to Metriacanthosaurus, a femur of a juvenile stegosaur and a large tooth from North Yorkshire belonging to a theropod, possibly metriacanthosaurid in nature. In addition, footprints have been found indicating other types of dinosaur present and based on fossil discoveries associated with strata from geologically older and slightly younger rocks than those ascribed to the Oxfordian, it can be concluded that megalosaurine megalosaurids, tyrannosauroids and ornithopods would have lived in the Oxfordian too, we just haven’t found them yet.

The British Isles During the Late Jurassic

The ecology of the time is also mysterious. We know for certain that the UK was separated into a series of islands, many of the islands were close enough to allow dinosaurs like Metriacanthosaurus and Eustreptospondylus to travel between them. However to reconstruct the flora and habitat we can look back to the Callovian stage as its likely the environment wasn’t too different from then which allows for the conclusion to be drawn that the islands were semi-tropical and lush in plant life with forests located in the middle of the islands spreading outwards and ending near or in some places at the coast.

Mixed in with the forests would have been rivers, streams, small lakes, swamps, floodplains, open woodland areas closer to the coast and at the coast, estuaries, marshes, ooid beaches, bars, lagoons, coves and other coastal structures.

A Seasonal Climate

The dry season on the islands would have been long and dry with humid areas and during the wet season, the islands would have had to endure harsh tropical storms with hurricane force winds. Plant life consisted of pollen and spore releasing plants, gymnosperms like ginkgoes, conifers and cycads, ferns, other pteridophytes along with other plants such as horsetails. The climate would have been warm and subtropical to tropical.

Ooid Beaches – An Explanation and Metricanthosaurus parkeri

For context, ooid beaches are where beaches are made of small, fine sand-like granules of calcium carbonate, the largest quarry in the UK (Ketton Quarry), has a portion of it that dates to just before the Oxfordian stage and might help unravel the mystery behind the Oxfordian of Britain.

Metriacanthosaurus was most likely the apex predator of the time, hunting anything from smaller theropods to perhaps the sauropod dinosaurs it coexisted with, it would have had powerful jaws with large sharp teeth and long powerful arms tipped with large hand claws for grasping prey. Metriacanthosaurus’s raised neural spinal ridge was probably used for extra back muscle attachment anchor points allowing the animal to be physically stronger than other similarly sized theropods of the time, although this assessment remains largely speculative.

Metriacanthosaurus means “moderately-spined lizard”.

A Unique Megalosaur

Eustreptospondylus is a rather unique megalosaur, it may have been a lot like today’s Komodo dragon frequenting many islands combing beaches, hunting down smaller animals, perhaps raiding nests of larger dinosaurs and possibly even hunting fish. Despite Eustreptospondylus’s hypothesised adult size, it would have still been prey for the likes of Metriacanthosaurus. A specimen of another dinosaur found from this geological time is an ankylosaur called Priodontognathus. It was around 2 to 3 metres long and is known from Yorkshire.
