Another Day – Another Fascinating and Informative Pterosaur Fact Sheet

By |2024-05-10T06:55:48+01:00November 21st, 2017|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Tupandactylus imperator – Big-headed Pterosaur

Another day and another pterosaur fact sheet is being prepared by Everything Dinosaur team members.  The flying reptile in question is Tupandactylus imperator, known from the famous Crato Formation in the Araripe Basin of north-eastern Brazil.  Known from only four skulls and a fragmentary jawbone, discovered in commercial limestone quarries, this pterosaur sported the largest crest of any known flying reptile.  The head crests of the two species so far described (T. imperator and T. navigans) may have been different shapes.

A Pterosaur Fact Sheet

The head crest of Tupandactylus navigans was taller and more sail-like, whilst the crest of T.  imperator was more swept back and broader.  Both crests were huge, with the largest specimens of T. imperator having a head crest that makes up 5/6th the total lateral area of the skull.

For models of pterosaurs and other prehistoric animals: Mojo Fun Prehistoric and Extinct Figures.

Closely Related to Tapejara

When described, back in 1997 (Campos and Kellner), the fossil material was assigned to the Tapejara genus, but subsequent, better preserved skull material showed enough anatomical differences to permit a new genus – Tupandactylus to be established in 2007.  The genus name means “Tupan finger”, a reference to the god of thunder of the indigenous Tupi Indians of north-eastern Brazil.  It may not be part of the Tapejara genus anymore, but it was closely related to Tapejara, although some palaeontologists, using what little stratigraphic evidence associated with the fossil material, suggest that Tupandactylus lived earlier in the Cretaceous than Tapejara (Tapejara wellnhoferi).

What Did Tupandactylus Eat?

Fossils of this flying reptile are associated with a lacustrine (lake), inland environment.  A number of sources report that this pterosaur ate fish (piscivore), although more recent research suggests that this pterosaur may have feasted on a variety of foods and was probably omnivorous – feeding of fruit and seeds as well as small vertebrates.

The New Rebor “Pete” Velociraptor Reviewed

By |2024-05-10T06:50:59+01:00October 30th, 2017|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

A Review of the Rebor Velociraptor Model “Pete”

Rebor has produced a lot of “raptor” models, the latest off the production line is the beautiful, 1:18 scale running Velociraptor figure called “Pete”.  This new dinosaur model joins “Spring-heeled Jack”, “Alex Delarge” and “Winston” in the portfolio of scale models of adult Velociraptors.  There are almost enough Rebor 1:18 scale Velociraptor figures to make up your own personal pack!

The Rebor Velociraptor “Pete” Model

Rebor Replicas – “Pete”

Rebor has opted to produce a range of classical Velociraptorinae sub-family members and they are all shown in dynamic poses. After the leaping “raptors” comes this depiction of a running dinosaur and this is a beautifully crafted model.  The right hind limb is raised off the ground and the moveable arms are tucked (yes, we know that anatomically the hand is not in the right position), but this does not detract from the overall look of the figure.

The paintwork is superb, with subtle hues blended into the grey motif and we like the effect of the intermittent white bands that can be seen, particularly towards the distal end of that long, stiff tail.

An Articulated Lower Jaw

Like many of the Rebor replica range, this figure has an articulated lower jaw.  When the jaw is opened, the fine detail in the mouth can be viewed.  It is great to see how the individual teeth have been painted, all credit to the artists at Rebor and the tongue of this dinosaur can be seen too.  It has always surprised us to see the number of dinosaur models in running poses depicted with their mouths open.

If dinosaurs are anything like modern animals, particularly their nearest living relatives – the birds, then they did not open their mouths very much, especially when running along.  However, the articulated jaw on this model enables dinosaur fans to pose their Velociraptor either “mouth closed” or “mouth open”.

Great Detail on the Skull and the Jaws

Vertical Pupils

The eye of “Pete” has a vertical slit for a pupil.  This pupil shape can be seen in the other 1:18 scale Velociraptor models, but in the Velociraptor hatchlings blind box series, some of the hatchlings are depicted with rounded pupils.  Cats, crocodilians, vipers and foxes have vertical slits for pupils too, a study published in 2015 shed light (no pun intended) on why certain types of predator have these slits.  It has all to do with the preferred mode of hunting.

Vertical-slit pupils are most common amongst animals that are either nocturnal or active in low light levels and hunt by ambushing their prey.  A paper published in academic journal “Science Advances” (2015) concluded that the vertical slit provides the sharpest image in low light helping a predator to judge the distance accurately between them and their target prey.

As “Pete” has vertical slits for pupils, just like his 1:18 scale Velociraptor counterparts in the Rebor range, it can be inferred that Rebor consider Velociraptor to be an ambush predator.

In the picture (above), the vertical slit pupil in this Rebor replica can be viewed.

Rebor Velociraptor Measurements

Our model measures just over 22.5 centimetres long (nose to tail) and on the sand coloured base the model stands approximately 11 centimetres high.  The base itself is 9 cm long by 4 cm wide.  Al in all, this is a super Velociraptor replica in the “classical” mould, we look forward to the arrival of the next Rebor Velociraptor in this series – Sweeney Todd.

Dinosaur Dressing Up Costumes for Halloween

Dinosaur Dressing Up Costumes for Halloween

It’s that spooky time of year again!  The nights are drawing in and Halloween is rapidly approaching.  For mums, dads, grandparents, guardians and grown-ups in general, “All Hallows Eve” can be a bit traumatic when it comes to searching out suitable costumes for the kids.  However, for young dinosaur fans, we at Everything Dinosaur have it covered as we have in stock a range of dinosaur dressing up costumes, which are ideal of Halloween.

To view the dinosaur dressing up costumes and dinosaur themed clothing: Dinosaur Themed Clothing.

Dinosaur Dressing Up

With costumes for 3 years to age 9 and with very low prices plus subsidised postage, Everything Dinosaur can take the “fear” out of shopping for suitable Halloween fare.  When it comes to the Dinosauria, most dinosaur fans would happily tell you, usually in gory detail, that the meat-eaters were particularly nasty.  Certainly, the big theropods would have been best avoided if they were around today, however, even the smaller dromaeosaurids (the “raptors”), especially if they were pack-hunters, would have been creatures that you would not have liked to meet on a dark and stormy night.

Even the Smaller Meat-eating Dinosaurs Would Have Been Quite Frightening

Fearsome Flying Pterosaurs – More Scary than Bats

Bats (Order Chiroptera), are associated with Halloween.  These are the only mammals that are capable of powered flight.  Of the 1,200 or so, species of bat described, ten-times the number of pterosaur species described to date, the vast majority are either insectivores or fruit-eaters (frugivorous).  Bats tend to be small, even the largest of the “mega-bats”, the Sub-order Megachiroptera, (which means “big wing hand”), are quite small.  The biggest extant bats have wing-spans in excess of 1.5 metres, but they weigh little more than a large guinea pig and they are entirely harmless, happily feeding on fruit rather than flesh.  Pterosaurs with their leathery wings would have been much more frightening.  There were small

pterosaurs, but some of the Pterosauria, some members of the Azhdarchidae, for example, were monsters.  Some species stood taller than a giraffe and had beaks more than 2.5 metres long.  Some super-sized pterosaur fossils even come from Transylvania!

Eofauna Steppe Mammoth Helps Out with Museum Display

Scale models of prehistoric animals are not just appreciated by collectors, they can also help to educate and inform.  Here is a wonderful example of a museum quality replica being used in a museum exhibition to help illustrate evolution.  Everything Dinosaur was contacted by Dr Jan Fischer of the Urweltmuseum GEOSKOP, Dr Fischer wanted a Eofauna Steppe Mammoth model for a display case illustrating the evolutionary development of elephants.

Not a problem, as soon as stock of this 1:40 scale Mammuthus trogontherii model had arrived at our warehouse, one of our dedicated team members reserved a replica for the museum and emailed Dr Fischer.  One purchase later and the usual customary swift delivery from Everything Dinosaur and Dr Fischer could add the Steppe Mammoth model to his display showcasing the diversity of Proboscideans and how their teeth show adaptations to different diets.

“The molars give information on the diets of the various prehistoric and extant elephants in the display case and the scale models provide an excellent illustration of what the prehistoric animal actually looked like.  The Eofauna Scientific Research Steppe Mammoth model has been created from three-dimensional scans of fossil material, so it is fitting that this very accurate prehistoric elephant model is being used in a museum display.”

What is TetZooCon?

TetZooCon, is an annual meeting themed around the contents and remit of the world-famous blog “Tetrapod Zoology”, currently in its twelfth year, the blog having started at around the same time as Everything Dinosaur’s blog began.  Written by vertebrate palaeontologist and author Darren Naish, “Tetrapod Zoology” covers topics as diverse as turtle evolution, the life and times of Secretary Birds (Sagittarius serpentarius), fossil discoveries, animals of myth and legend as well as model collecting.

TetZooCon provides an opportunity for fans of cryptozoology, palaeontology, zoology and evolutionary history to indulge in their passion.  Co-organiser, talented artist John Conway, has used his considerable influence to bring together some of the great and the good in scientific illustration and a number of palaeoart workshops and book signings have been organised as part of the day of activities.  You might even be able to snap up a few signed prints too.

Everything Dinosaur and Proposed Royal Mail Strike Action an Important Update

By |2024-05-09T14:44:26+01:00October 7th, 2017|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Contingency Planning in Place if Royal Mail Strike Goes Ahead

On Thursday (5th October), it was announced that Royal Mail workers in the UK are set to go on strike for 48-hours from the 19th October in a dispute over pensions, job status and pay.  The Communication Workers Union (CWU), has informed the management at the Royal Mail Group that 111,000 postal workers will walk out and go on strike until Saturday 21st October.  As a mail order company, this is quite troubling news, especially as we build up to the very busy Christmas period.  However, Everything Dinosaur has already started to put in contingency plans to help manage any potential disruption in UK mail services.

Potential Parcel Disruption with Proposed Royal Mail Strike Action

Royal Mail and Everything Dinosaur

Everything Dinosaur team members have taken steps to help minimise disruption for customers, but due to industrial action UK and overseas deliveries of parcels will be subject to delays. Picture credit: Everything Dinosaur.

Everything Dinosaur Takes Steps to Minimise Disruption

This industrial action is proposed to take place at or after 11am on Thursday 19th October and run until 11am Saturday 21st October 2017.  The CWU has already intimated that further industrial action cannot be ruled out at this stage.  This dispute, which has been ongoing for some considerable time, may escalate and industrial action of this nature could, potentially disrupt Christmas deliveries.

Everything Dinosaur has already been contacted by Royal Mail over this issue and we have plans in place to help minimise any disruption should strike action go ahead.

Helping Customers

As a mail order company, we have put into place some contingency plans to help reduce any inconvenience to our customers.

  • More packing of parcels has been scheduled to take place on the weekend prior to the 19th October.  By ensuring all orders placed on Saturday and Sunday are despatched on the following Monday, these orders should avoid the worst of any industrial action.
  • Additional, mail collections have been organised for the Tuesday and Wednesday proceeding the proposed industrial action.  This should enable us to get parcels into the mail system more quickly and help to minimise the impact of any industrial action that has taken place.
  • Staff will continue to pack items during any period of disruption, this will ensure a prompt collection and placement into the mail network as soon as any industrial action has finished.
  • Time has been allocated on the Saturday (21st), to enable us to pack orders and to get them sent out on that day.
  • All our correspondence, letters and such like are being held back so that in our own small way we can reduce the workload and the subsequent backlog for local Royal Mail staff.

In addition to not having any Royal Mail service over the intended period of strike action, further disruption can be expected as the backlog of letters and parcels is cleared.  Orders despatched by other channels such as via courier services are not going to be affected and we have already discussed with our couriers contingency plans to cover any increase in the number of courier deliveries that we use.

Everything Dinosaur, like many firms, is actively exploring alternative mail delivery systems.  The strike action, if it is to continue, may result in delays with the Christmas post.  We are doing all we can to assist customers and provide support.

However, we urge that it would be very sensible for customers not to leave ordering until quite late, especially as the Christmas mail build up increases.  It is always a good idea to order early, so for birthdays, parties and Christmas our advice is to plan ahead.

Royal Mail Press Release

Royal Mail management have put a press release about the threat of industrial action, in this press release they state:

“We are committed to further talks as a matter of urgency to reach agreement with the CWU.  There are no grounds for industrial action.  We want to reach agreement.  Earlier this week we reminded the CWU of the dispute resolution procedures that we agreed in the Agenda for Growth.  These dispute resolution procedures were set up as a vehicle to resolve industrial disputes.  We wish to use them to do just that.  External mediation as set out in Agenda For Growth has not taken place.  We will use all legal options at our disposal, including applying to the High Court for an injunction to prevent industrial action.”

Naturally, we will keep all our customers informed.  We will keep you posted….
