Wild Safari Prehistoric World Woolly Rhino Arrives

Wild Safari Prehistoric World Woolly Rhino in Stock at Everything Dinosaur

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Woolly Rhino model is in stock at Everything Dinosaur. This superb figure of an Ice Age rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis), arrived yesterday, it is the first of the new for 2019 figures and replicas from Safari Ltd that Everything Dinosaur will be stocking.

“Ancient Hollow Tooth” – Brought Bang Up to Date

The Woolly Rhinoceros, known by palaeontologists as Coelodonta antiquitatis (the name means ancient hollow tooth), has been brought bang up to date by the design team at Safari Ltd. The model has stocky and short limbs and the figure has been painted to give the impression of a thick coat of fur covering the body.

The nostrils are large and have been given a varnish on the inside to give the impression that they are moist. Like most rhinos, the eyesight of Coelodonta antiquitatis was quite poor but it did have an excellent sense of smell. Large nasals also probably served to help warm air before it entered the lungs, an adaptation to living on the tundra and frozen steppe. The large anterior horn is somewhat flattened and spatulate in shape, again, this is an accurate depiction of the horn, as it was used to help sweep snow away so that ground dwelling vegetation could be exposed permitting this large mammal to feed.

More Wild Safari Prehistoric World Models to Come

One of the reasons why the agreement that Safari Ltd had with the Carnegie Museum of Natural History came to an end was that with the termination of the agreement, the Florida based figure company could focus on producing more models and increasing its range. A further ten prehistoric animal figures are due to be introduced in the next few months or so. Everything Dinosaur is optimistic that more new for 2019 figures will be coming into stock before the end of the year. The last of the 2019 model introductions should be available in the spring.

New CollectA Models 2019 (Part 2)

New CollectA Models 2019 (Part 2)

Here is the second part of our series of articles introducing the new for 2019 prehistoric animal models from CollectA and fittingly, part two features two new figures to be added to the range.

The two new prehistoric animal figures are:

A 1:20 scale replica of the sail-backed reptile Edaphosaurus (available first quarter 2019).
A 1:40 scale replica of the “meat-eating bull” Carnotaurus (available first quarter 2019).

The New for 2019 CollectA 1:20 Scale Edaphosaurus Model

The CollectA Deluxe 1:20 Scale Edaphosaurus Model

CollectA have expressed a wish to increase the number of Palaeozoic creatures represented in their range, hence the introduction of the Permian pelycosaur Edaphosaurus. This beautiful figure is a great accompaniment to the Dimetrodon model that came out last year. It is great to see another synapsid introduced into the CollectA range, especially a herbivore.

Commenting upon the 1:20 scale Deluxe Edaphosaurus model, designer Anthony Beeson stated:

“I have tried to make the Deluxe Edaphosaurus a more active animal than generally portrayed and again less sprawling. My version of the sail is quite thickly fleshed, unlike the sails of Dimetrodons and you will see that only the knobs of the cross-pieces protrude from the sides. I have always liked Edaphosaurus and never really understood why there are so few toy versions around. The shape of the sail is very pleasing.”

2019 will see CollectA add to their collection of abelisaurid dinosaurs. Joining the Rugops, Rajasaurus and the Majungasaurus will be a spectacular Carnotaurus figure. Unlike the existing members of the Abelisauridae within the CollectA portfolio, this will be a scale model (1/40th), the first of this type of dinosaur to be added to CollectA’s Deluxe range.

Fans Requesting Carnotaurus

Fans of the CollectA dinosaurs have been requesting a Carnotaurus for quite a while. It is wonderful to see a replica of this Argentinian giant from the Late Cretaceous added to the scale model range. Dinosaur enthusiasts will probably know that skin impressions have been found in association with the fossils of this dinosaur.

A considerable portion of the right side of the dinosaur left a skin impression which was preserved in the rock. The design team at CollectA have taken great care to ensure that the texture of their Carnotaurus reflects what is known about the skin of this carnivore, although, the striking flashes of colour on the head and neck are purely speculative.

The short, deep skull and those amazing horns that give this dinosaur its name have been beautifully crafted. Note the use of a base to support the figure, this has permitted the sculpting team to give the Carnotaurus appropriately sized feet, after all, this dinosaur was nicknamed by palaeontologists studying the locomotion of this theropod, the “Dinosaur Speed Demon” .

Commenting on the introduction of a Carnotaurus, designer Anthony Beeson remarked:

“The Deluxe Carnotaurus is the result of repeated requests from fans for a CollectA version of this creature. I was never very keen to do it in the past as, when we started, almost every firm was producing models in the wake of the Disney dinosaur film and Jurassic Park. I am glad that we waited. I have tried to emphasise in the tail the shape proposed in the work of Currie and Persons and the fact that the caudofemoralis muscle in Carnotaurus was very large enabling great speed to be maintained.”

It was W. Scott Persons IV and Phil Currie who looked at the tail muscle structure in Carnotaurus sastrei and published a paper in 2011, suggesting that this dinosaur had a larger caudofemoralis muscle than any other Theropod described at the time – hence the “Dinosaur Speed Demon” nickname. This muscle provides the power to help move the dinosaur forward and such a huge muscle indicated that Carnotaurus was capable of great bursts of speed. Ironically, straight line running was its speciality, the shape of the muscle and the tail bones supporting it suggested that Carnotaurus was not so good at making tight turns.

We suspect that both the new 1:40 scale Deluxe Carnotaurus and the 1:20 Deluxe Edaphosaurus will be flying off our shelves in the warehouse when they come into stock in early 2019.

A Formidable Predator of the Middle Triassic of Brazil

Prestosuchus (P. chiniquensis) was not a dinosaur, but a member of the Archosauria, just like the dinosaurs, but from a lineage that is more closely related to modern crocodilians than to living birds and extinct dinosaurs. Fossils of this large predator have been found in south-eastern Brazil from strata that date from the Middle Triassic. Prestosuchus was named by the German palaeontologist Friedrich von Huene in 1942, the genus name honours Brazilian self-taught palaeontologist Vicentino Prestes de Almeida and the trivial name honours the town where Vicentino Prestes de Almeida was born (Chiniquá, Rio Grande do Sul).

Producing a Scale Drawing

It had been thought that this animal measured around 5 metres in length, about the size of a Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), however, a specimen described in 2010 indicated that this quadruped may have reached lengths of around 7 metres and it might have weighed 1,000 kilograms or more. Everything Dinosaur team members have had to examine a number of scientific papers in order to produce a scale drawing for use in their Prestosuchus fact sheet. This fact sheet will be sent out with purchases of the Prestosuchus model.

Rebor Replicas in Stock at Everything Dinosaur

The Rebor 1/35th scale tyrannosaur figures are stunning models. Each figure measures 42 centimetres approximately and both Mountain and Jungle have articulated lower jaws and poseable tails. Another replica of a Morrison Formation dinosaur is included as well, the CollectA Brontosaurus model. The CollectA Brontosaurus measures an impressive 30.5 centimetres long and the head height of this sauropod model is a fraction under 11 centimetres.

Finalising the Citipati Fact Sheet

In the new for 2019 Wild Safari Prehistoric World (Safari Ltd) model range, there is going to be a model of an oviraptorid – Citipati (C. osmolskae). As a result, team members at Everything Dinosaur have been busy preparing for the arrival of these models by finalising the fact sheet that will accompany sales of this colourful dinosaur model. The fact sheet has just about been completed, it needs only to have the scale drawing added to it.

Citipati osmolskae – “Funeral Pyre Lord”

Our scale drawing is an approximation, the true size of this dinosaur is not known. It may have measured more than three metres long, although a body length of 2.5 metres is also possible. In the late spring (2018), a scientific paper was published that reported upon the finding of another oviraptorid specimen discovered in association with a nest.

This specimen has been assigned to the Citipati osmolskae taxon, after all, fossils of this dinosaur are relatively common in the Ukhaa Tolgod region of Mongolia, where this new specimen was discovered. Intriguingly, a comparison of the upper arm bones indicates that this new example of dinosaur nesting behaviour represents an adult animal more than 10% bigger than the original Ukhaa Tolgod nesting Citipati osmolskae specimen (IGM 100/979). Estimating size for this member of the Dinosauria is therefore somewhat difficult.

Although several examples of nesting/brooding behaviour have now been described (we think the total to date is five), no evidence for colonial breeding for these dinosaurs has ever been discovered.

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Citipati replica is one of several new models in this range. Everything Dinosaur is hoping to have the first of the new for 2019 introductions, including the colourful Citipati replica, in their warehouse and available to purchase in December (2018).

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Citipati (C. osmolskae) Model

Honouring the Polish Palaeontologist Halszka Osmólska

The genus name for this oviraptorid comes from the Sanskrit for “funeral pyre lord”, a reference to a story from Buddhist folklore about two monks that were beheaded by a thief. These monks are frequently depicted as a pair of dancing skeletons surrounded by fire. The beautifully preserved Citipati specimens excavated from the red sandstones of the Djadokhta Formation, reminded the research team responsible for their study (Clark, Norell et al), of the dancing monks.

The species name honours the Polish palaeontologist Halszka Osmólska (1930 – 2008), who pioneered research into Mongolian dinosaurs and made a substantial contribution to our understanding of Theropoda from the Upper Cretaceous deposits of Mongolia.

Important News about Papo Model Retirements in 2019

Papo Model Retirements 2019

At Everything Dinosaur, we have had lots of interest already from customers, social media followers and blog readers asking about new for 2019 models from Papo. We are not able to publish this information as yet, it remains embargoed. However, when we can, we will put up information and pictures, all part of our plans to inform people about what is new and upcoming in terms of 2019 model introductions from manufacturers next year.

In the meantime, it is sensible to focus on those models and figures that are being withdrawn and are going out of production. Papo will be retiring two figures from their “Les Dinosaures” range next year, ironically neither of the models represent a dinosaur.

Winged Wonders Out of Production

Both these models represent animals from the Mesozoic that were capable of powered flight. Of the two, palaeontologists believe that the pterosaur, Tupuxuara was probably more confident in the air. Some of the latest research on the enigmatic “Urvogel” suggests that Archaeopteryx was actually quite a poor flier. Whatever their volant abilities, both these figures are being retired and are now out of production. However, thanks to Everything Dinosaur collectors and model fans are being pre-warned about their withdrawal. There is still time to add these two models to your Papo figure collection.

Papo Archaeopteryx

The Papo Archaeopteryx figure was introduced in 2014 and at the time of its introduction, it received a lot of positive feedback as representations of Archaeopteryx lithographica were, if you pardon the pun, a bit thin on the ground. Sadly, after nearly five years, this model has flapped its wings for the last time and has been officially withdrawn.

At the time of this model’s introduction, Everything Dinosaur published several reviews of this figure including a video review. These releases have been seen thousands of times.

Papo Tupuxuara

It is always a pleasure to see more models representing the Pterosauria being introduced, so the loss of the Papo Tupuxuara is a big blow. This figure was only introduced in 2015, alongside the Papo young Apatosaurus model. Three species of Tupuxuara have been named to date, the first being described in 1988. These pterosaurs are synonymous with Lower Cretaceous sediments found in north-eastern Brazil.

One of the reasons suggested for the withdrawal of the Papo Tupuxuara figure, is the difficulty encountered when trying to pronounce the name of this flying reptile. Tupuxuara was named after a spirit referred to within the culture of the local Tupi people of north-eastern Brazil. Tupuxuara is pronounced “Too-pooh-hwar-ah”.

Important News about CollectA Prehistoric Animal Model Retirements 2019

CollectA Prehistoric Animal Models Retired (2019)

At this time of year, speculation always mounts as to what new models are going to be introduced next spring. Not too long for readers and customers to wait until Everything Dinosaur publishes this information, but for the moment we are going to focus on those replicas and figures being retired and therefore becoming more and more difficult to obtain. CollectA for example, will be retiring numerous models from the CollectA prehistoric animal ranges in 2019.

CollectA Deluxe 1:20 Scale Paraceratherium Being Retired

Several scale models are going out of production, the CollectA Deluxe Paraceratherium is being dropped and will no longer be available. This figure was introduced back in 2009 and it represents one of the largest, terrestrial mammals to have ever lived. Paraceratherium is distantly related to today’s rhinos and it demonstrates the huge variety within the odd-toed ungulates (Perissodactyla).

Further announcements about scale model retirements from the CollectA range will be made by Everything Dinosaur shortly, in the meantime, we do have some stocks of Paraceratherium available and this model and the rest of the Deluxe range from CollectA can be viewed here: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Life.

CollectA “Prehistoric Life” Model Retirements

In addition, numerous replicas from the “Age of Dinosaurs Popular” range are being dropped. The first of the models to be retired include:

Becklespinax – a model of an enigmatic English theropod dinosaur introduced in 2009.
Muttaburrasaurus – an Australian ornithopod, possibly responsible for part of the Lark Quarry trace fossil assemblage. The model was introduced in 2010.
Tsintaosaurus – often referred to as the “unicorn dinosaur” due to the bizarre head ornamentation. Tsintaosaurus is a hadrosaurid known from China. The model came out in 2012.
Edmontonia – a model of a Canadian nodosaur that was added to the CollectA prehistoric life range in 2010.
Koreaceratops Family – a sheep-sized ceratopsian that might have been semi-aquatic. Koreaceratops was named in 2010 and the CollectA model came out in 2012.
Swimming Spinosaurus – this model showing Spinosaurus as a quadruped at home in the water was introduced in 2015.

Countdown to Rebor “Vanilla Ice” Tyrannosaurs

Dinosaur fans and model collectors do not have too long to wait until the arrival of the two new Rebor replicas, the “Vanilla Ice” tyrannosaurids – mountain and jungle. These beautifully crafted figures are due to be sent out from the factory on or around Saturday, the 20th October and within a few days after this date, the shipment should be arriving at the Everything Dinosaur warehouse. We have already opened a special reserve list for these figures and we should be publishing pricing details soon.

Rebor Replicas – “Vanilla Ice” – Jungle

The Rebor “Vanilla Ice” – Jungle is painted in a camouflaged green palette and it has been very skilfully modelled and is the fourth tyrannosaurid to be created by Rebor. The colouration of Late Cretaceous, large-bodied tyrannosaurs remains contentious, the level of integumentary covering is not known and there has been considerable scientific debate about this aspect of tyrannosaurid anatomy. Rebor has chosen to retain the “classic” scaly reptile look for these figures and most impressive the models are too.

Rebor “Vanilla Ice” – Mountain

The mountain version is painted with a slate grey hue. It is not known what sort of habitats Late Cretaceous, large-bodied tyrannosaurs lived in. However, these hyper-carnivores were very probably the apex predators in these environments. They were quite geographically and temporarily widespread in the last fifteen million years of the Mesozoic. For example, only a few days ago, a new genus of Early Campanian, large-bodied tyrannosaurid from New Mexico was named and described. The dinosaur has been named – Dynamoterror dynastes which translates as “powerful terror ruler”.

Rebor Replicas – Tale of the Tape

Both models will be supplied with a tail attachment to insert into the back of the figure. The tail is articulated to help create a range of poses for each tyrannosaur. In addition, both models will have an articulated jaw. As for the size of these figures, they are both the same size, measuring approximately 42 centimetres long (with tail added) and standing around 12.5 centimetres tall. Based on these measurements, we suggest that the actual model is slightly bigger than the 1:35 scaling suggests.

As to why they are called “Vanilla Ice”, we are not quite sure. We are not aware of any obvious connection between the American rapper and television personality, Robert Matthew Van Winkle aka “Vanilla Ice”. However, we have been reliable informed that “Vanilla Ice” has a birthday on October 31st, hopefully, Everything Dinosaur will have these two replicas in stock by then.

The Eofauna Giganotosaurus measures 39 centimetres long and the head height is an impressive 11 centimetres. The replica is modelled in 1:35 scale and at this size, the figure represents an adult animal that is around 13.65 metres in length. The Eofauna Giganotosaurus will also have an articulated lower jaw. It will be the first of the Eofauna Scientific Research model range to have articulation.

Dunkleosteus on the Front Cover

The 1:20 scale CollectA Dunkleosteus model is featured on the front cover. This figure measures around twenty-eight centimetres in length and that pronounced hump at the back of the head is approximately six centimetres high. This model of the giant Devonian predator was introduced earlier this year and it has received a lot of praise from academics, researchers and museum curators.

All the catalogues, that Everything Dinosaur stocks, including the CollectA 2018 booklet, are available for free from the UK-based company, there is just a subsidised postage cost to pay.
