Baking Terrific and Tasty Triassic Treats

Dinosaurs Inspire Baking

The children in Year 2 (Owls and Hedgehogs classes), at Spire Nursery and Infant School (Derbyshire), have been learning all about dinosaurs, fossils and prehistoric animals this term.  A team member from Everything Dinosaur visited the school last week to conduct some workshops with the children as part of a challenging, diverse and exciting scheme of work that had been devised by the dedicated teaching team.

“Triassic Treats”

Over the last few weeks the children have shared lots of amazing information about dinosaurs and set out what aspects of the lives of dinosaurs that they would like to explore.  The eager, young palaeontologists have been learning about when dinosaurs lived, where they lived and what they ate.  As part of an exploration of food and dinosaur body shapes the children in Year 2 made some super dinosaur themed cakes and biscuits. We took the opportunity to photograph the children’s “Triassic treats”.

Developing Creativity

Taking part in a baking activity permits the children to practice their measuring and motor skills as well as introducing the idea of following a set of instructions to achieve a desired outcome.  Decorating the various dinosaur themed treats certainly brought out the children’s creative flair.

Herbivores, Carnivores and Omnivores

Over the course of the term topic the children have been learning about simple food webs and what animal’s need to keep them safe and well.  During our workshops with the classes our dinosaur expert checked learning by testing the children’s knowledge about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.  One of the role-play areas in a classroom had been turned into a “dinosaur dig site”, permitting the children the opportunity to search for dinosaur bones, allowing the children to experience what it is like to be a real palaeontologist.

After the Everything Dinosaur workshops in the morning, the children were going to have an afternoon of science, creating simple experiments to study the way in which some dinosaurs fed.  We hope that the additional resources, experiment ideas and lesson plans we provided helps to support, what is already a diverse and challenging scheme of work.

Whilst in one of the classrooms, our dinosaur expert was able to see some of the excellent dinosaur themed work completed by the children.  The classes had been finding out lots of information about dinosaurs from a variety of sources to help them create their own non-fiction book.  Lots of dinosaur books were on display, the Year 2 pupils had been exploring different texts, all with a prehistoric animal theme.

Shapes and Numeracy

There is a big focus on helping the children gain confidence with numbers.  The children have been studying simple addition and subtraction problems, our dinosaur footprint measuring exercise that we provided should help support this area of the curriculum nicely.  The enthusiastic teaching team have been using dinosaurs to help children appreciate and learn about different shapes.  On the wall outside the Year 2 classrooms, examples of dinosaurs made from different shaped pieces of felt were on display.

Eofauna Scientific Research – Model Mystery?

By |2023-11-01T13:03:44+00:00October 2nd, 2018|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

Eofauna Scientific Research – Mystery Model?

So, the news is out, those super-talented people at Eofauna Scientific Research are going to be introducing another prehistoric animal model.  After two perfect proboscideans (Straight-tusked Elephant and their first model, a Steppe Mammoth), there is to be a third model added to this range, probably before Christmas.  However, this is no elephant!

Eofauna Scientific Research – A Third Model Teaser

A little while back, representatives from Everything Dinosaur met up with those talented chaps from Eofauna Scientific Research and over the course of a very fruitful meeting, how best to introduce new prehistoric animal models was discussed.  Over a cup of coffee, we explained that one way of raising awareness about a new figure would be to post up some pictures such as a partial image or a silhouette.

Dinosaur fans and model collectors could then learn about a new model, without necessarily knowing exactly what the forthcoming introduction was going to be.  It’s a tease we know, but as we put forward the suggestion in the first place, please don’t blame Eofauna.  However, at least collectors can have a go at guessing what sort of prehistoric animal might be the next to be released.

The Current Range from Eofauna Scientific Research – A Perfect Pair of Proboscideans

Eofauna Scientific Research Models

Eofauna Scientific Research models are available to purchase from Everything Dinosaur.  With a third model being introduced shortly, I suppose we can formally call this series a range and what a range of realistic, hand-painted, museum quality replicas of prehistoric animals Eofauna has produced.

All named prehistoric animal replicas and models in the Eofauna Scientific Research models collection are supplied with their very own fact sheet so you can read all about dinosaurs, marine reptiles and other creatures from the past.  Everything Dinosaur fact sheet collectors, please don’t worry, there will be a fact sheet available for this third figure, just for the time being, we are not allowed to reveal what the model is.

Perhaps, if we provided a close-up view of those mystery feet, it might help.

These prehistoric animal models and Eofauna dinosaurs are great to collect and ideal for helping to develop creative, imaginative play.  A wonderful collection of replicas including the Eofauna Scientific Research Steppe Mammoth and the Eofauna Scientific Research Straight-tusked Elephant, with another new model to come before Christmas.

But what is it?  We promise to reveal the answer and publish more information very soon…

Everything Dinosaur Supports TetZooCon 2018

The countdown to the annual TetZooCon has well and truly started, there is just under a week to go until the prestigious London conference dedicated to living and extinct tetrapods.  TetZooCon opens on Saturday 6th October and for the first time, the amazing number of speakers, presenters and activities means that the fifth incarnation of this event has been extended over two days.  A whole weekend dedicated to the “TetZooniverse”!

Everything Dinosaur is honoured to be involved in this annual gathering and we have dispatched some rather special prehistoric animal models and figures that can be used as prizes for the super-tricky (but still fun), quiz that is a staple of this wonderful event.

Talks, Presentations, Palaeoart Workshops, Book Signings and So Much More

Our congratulations to conference organisers Darren Naish and John Conway who have put together a varied and fascinating group of speakers and other tetrapod themed events for what will, no doubt, be an extremely enjoyable and informative weekend.  Visitors to The Venue, Malet Street, London next weekend will be able to spot Everything Dinosaur’s slides that have been prepared for use in between the talks and various presentations.

Everything Dinosaur Slides

The slides will showcase the breadth and the range of prehistoric animal figures and models that Everything Dinosaur now stocks.  Our prehistoric animal inventory is nearly as eclectic and diverse as the incredible range of presenters that have been invited to speak at this year’s TetZooCon.  Highlights of the event include a talk from herpetologist Mark O’Shea, Jennifer Jackson on the origins of baleen whales, Katrina van Grouw on the influence of Homo sapiens on the fate of Earth’s biota and Fiona Taylor providing a composer’s perspective on music used in wildlife documentaries.

We hope that Bristol University’s Steve Zhang, another speaker at this illustrious gathering, will spot the Eofauna Straight-tusked elephant (Palaeoloxodon antiquus) figure that we have donated as a quiz prize.  After all, Steven will be one of the first speakers TetZooCon 2018, with a short presentation highlighting the rise and fall of the Straight-tusked elephant.

The Slideshow Will Highlight the Huge Range of Prehistoric Animal Figures Stocked By Everything Dinosaur

The 2018 TetZooCon has a Very Special Banner

Since the very first TetZooCon in 2014, a promotional banner has been created by Darren featuring some of the enormous number of illustrations that the vertebrate palaeontologist and science writer has compiled for his textbook detailing the evolutionary history of the vertebrates.  This year’s banner is a little different, it includes artwork produced by delegates at last year’s conference, helping to encapsulate the inclusive and participative elements of this unique event.

If you attended TetZooCon and contributed to the pair of giant panels produced during the palaeoart workshop, then your own illustration may have been used to help create the 2018 TetZooCon promotional banner.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“TetZooCon is now in its fifth year and it is going from strength to strength.  Our congratulations to Darren and John for putting on this not-for-profit event, it is a wonderful example of scientific outreach, bringing together a cornucopia of talented artists, illustrators and scientists all helping to inform and educate.  Special wishes to Beth Windle, who once again will be bringing a Tetrapod inspired cake along to this prestigious event.”

Eagle-eyed attendees will spot something rather special on the slide presentation that we have prepared especially for TetZooCon 2018.  Everything Dinosaur will soon be sending out an important news release about yet another exciting development at the company.  A new range of prehistoric animal figures is being added to Everything Dinosaur’s already impressive portfolio and delegates at TetZooCon 2018 will be amongst the first to find out about this.

More news about TetZooCon and the developments at Everything Dinosaur coming soon….

New CollectA Brontosaurus in Stock

By |2024-05-11T06:22:12+01:00September 25th, 2018|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

CollectA Brontosaurus in Stock at Everything Dinosaur

The long-awaited and eagerly anticipated CollectA Brontosaurus model has arrived at our warehouse and it is now in stock.  The last of the 2018 prehistoric animal models to be introduced by CollectA, a replica of one of the most iconic of all the dinosaurs, “thunder lizard”, is available to purchase and team members have been busy contacting those Everything Dinosaur customers who wanted to reserve one of these sauropods.

The CollectA Brontosaurus Model is in Stock at Everything Dinosaur

CollectA Brontosaurus replica.
The CollectA Brontosaurus dinosaur model.

“Bully for Brontosaurus”

The name “Brontosaurus” might be very well known, but scientifically this particular genus of Late Jurassic, long-necked dinosaur has had a rather chequered history.  The genus name Brontosaurus was erected by the famous American palaeontologist Othniel Charles Marsh, however, the fossilised bones he ascribed to this new genus came from the same quarry where the dinosaur called Apatosaurus had been discovered two years earlier.

Brontosaurus became controversial, as it was very similar to Apatosaurus and from the same geological sequence and locality.  It was thought that Brontosaurus fossils were actually the same as those of Apatosaurus and therefore, since Apatosaurus was named first, Apatosaurus should take precedence.  The name Brontosaurus was relegated to a junior synonym of Apatosaurus.  The decision to finally and formally drop Brontosaurus from the scientific literature was taken back in 1970.

The Brontosaurus Model with Two CollectA Mantellisaurus Models

CollectA Mantellisaurus models and a CollectA Brontosaurus.
The CollectA Brontosaurus and two CollectA Mantellisaurus models.

In 2015, a scientific paper was published following a comprehensive review of the Apatosaurinae sub-family, one of the most thorough examinations of fossil material ever undertaken.  Following this review, the genus name Brontosaurus was resurrected, it having been established that the fossilised bones ascribed to the Brontosaurus genus were sufficiently different from those of Apatosaurus to warrant their own genus.

To read our 2015 article that explains the resurrection of the Brontosaurus genus in more detail: The Return of Brontosaurus.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“It is wonderful to have a Brontosaurus figure added to the CollectA model range. Dinosaur fans and model collectors can now add a replica of one of the most iconic and famous of all the dinosaurs to their collections.  We were delighted to welcome “thunder lizard” into our product portfolio.”

Visit the Everything Dinosaur website: Everything Dinosaur.

The CollectA Brontosaurus Model

The CollectA Brontosaurus model measures a fraction under 31 centimetres in length, so it is quite a sizeable dinosaur model.  The head height is around 10.5 centimetres.  Whilst this range from CollectA does not have an official scale, if the replica represents Brontosaurus excelsus (this translates as noble thunder lizard), then this new piece from CollectA represents a dinosaur that could grow to around 22 metres long.  Therefore, the scale of this model is approximately 1:72 or thereabouts.

The design team at CollectA have given the Brontosaurus dermal spines.  Many sauropods are known to have had dermal spines and osteoderms, but how they were arranged remains a mystery.  The CollectA Brontosaurus has a central row of spines running from the neck down to the base of the tail and two further rows running parallel to each other down the rest of the tail.  This is the first time that such an arrangement of spines have been placed on a figure like this.

Kaiyodo Sofubi Toy Box T. rex Figures in Stock

The amazing and highly collectable Kaiyodo Sofubi Toy Box T. rex figures are in stock at Everything Dinosaur.  A shipment of all three versions of this articulated Tyrannosaurus rex figure has arrived at Everything Dinosaur’s warehouse and team members have been busy alerting all those customers who wanted to be placed on the company’s priority reserve list and emailed when the models arrived.

Special Edition T. rex Figures

The Japanese company Kaiyodo has built a strong reputation for high quality, innovative figures and models, some of which, like these T. rex replicas are articulated.  Kaiyodo models are ideal for serious model collectors and enthusiastic dinosaur fans, the trio of T. rex figures represent a collection of hand-painted and individually sculpted prehistoric animal and extinct creatures.  Many of the Kaiyodo prehistoric animals are special edition replicas with a limited production run.

Ten Points of Articulation

Each figure has ten points of articulation, allowing the T. rex to be put in a variety of poses.  These are the first collectable tyrannosaurid figures to have ten points of articulation, permitting them to be displayed in numerous positions.  For example, we have been informed by some customers keen to get their hands on these dinosaurs that they want to buy a pair, so that one can be displayed in the classic “kangaroo pose” with the tail on the ground, whilst the other figure can be displayed in a more modern, anatomically correct position.

018A, 018B and 018C Tyrannosaurs

The models have an age restriction upon them, they are collectable figures and therefore not suitable for persons under 15 years of age.  Kaiyodo is famous for its novel and quirky designs, even the product designations of 018A, 018B and 018C are unusual.  The classic figure (018C), comes in a presentation box with a clear plastic front so that the model can be seen inside the packaging.

Vanilla ice Measurements

Each figure measures around 42 centimetres in length and the head height is approximately 12.5 centimetres.  The Vanilla Ice T. rex models are in 1:35 scale or thereabouts.  They make fantastic companion pieces to the Rebor “King” Tyrannosaurus rex figure, which itself measures just under 37 cm long.  Each model will have an articulated jaw, just like the Rebor “King” T. rex dinosaur replica.

Stylish Tyrannosaurus rex Figures

The tail of each model will be flexible, permitting the figures to be displayed in slightly different poses.  The tail is packed as a separate piece in each presentation box, so, just like the recently introduced and highly popular Ankylosaurus “War Pig” figures, the tail has to be inserted into the base of the model to complete the 1:35 scale replica.

With the Rebor Triceratops “Fallen Queen” and the Ankylosaurus “War Pig” figures, all of which are also in 1:35 scale, collectors are going to be spoilt for choice how they display these highly collectable new T. rex models.  Dinosaur model fans can always display these new pieces with the theropod figures already released by Rebor, after all, there are a lot of meat-eating dinosaurs within the Rebor range.  Perhaps, collectors could produce a diorama using the Ceratosaurus, Acrocanthosaurus, Carnotaurus or maybe the other tyrannosaurid figure from Rebor the Y-REX (Yutyrannus huali).

The Wonderful Crystal Palace Statues Helping to Change Perceptions

Crystal Palace Statues Helping with Outdoor Learning

Recently, Everything Dinosaur has been providing advice on how best to utilise the outdoor resources at the famous Crystal Palace Park in south London.  Schools have been invited to make the most of this area, with its historic “dinosaur statues”.  Outdoor learning is being encouraged and the park with its hard and soft landscaping as well as its iconic prehistoric animal figures makes a fantastic open space for creative activities linked to the English national curriculum. Everything Dinosaur is delighted to support the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs.

Prehistoric Animal Figures Not Just Dinosaurs

In reality, dinosaurs make up only a small proportion of the more than thirty statues on display.  The figures created by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins with scientific input from the soon to be knighted Sir Richard Owen, who went onto to help found the London Natural History Museum, include marine reptiles, crocodilians, turtles and extinct mammals.  They were erected in the middle of the 19th century (circa 1854) and they represent the first attempt to create life-size, dinosaur figures.  However, our view of the Dinosauria has evolved somewhat since the 1850s and the dinosaurs, depicted as four-footed, tail-dragging scaly lizards, is wildly inaccurate by today’s standards.

Crystal Palace Dinosaurs – Grade 1 Historic Monuments

All the figures are listed on Historic England’s “National Heritage List for England” as Grade 1 monuments.  This listing recognises the historic importance of these statues and a lot has been done to help preserve the dinosaurs and other figures as part of our country’s scientific and historical heritage.

In our advisory work, team members have suggested ways in which our changing views about the Dinosauria can be incorporated into the teaching programme.  The dinosaurs represented by the figures, the first three genera to be incorporated within the order Dinosauria, Megalosaurus, Hylaeosaurus and Iguanodon, show how our interpretation of the fossil record has changed over the last 170 years or so.  The statues provide a three-dimensional testament to how scientific ideas evolve and change in the light of new evidence.

Kaiyodo Dinosaurs

Back in June, Everything Dinosaur sent a newsletter to the company’s subscribers hinting that these models would be available from the UK-based specialist dinosaur model supplier.  Subscribers were given the opportunity to register their interest and to reserve a figure.  The response has been overwhelming, very few of these models have been produced and they are very difficult to obtain outside of Japan, but these models are shortly to be going on sale at Everything Dinosaur.

For further information on these T. rex collectables and to enquire about reserving a figure email: Contact Everything Dinosaur about Kaiyodo Dinosaurs.

Rare Collectables

The three T. rex colour variants are T. rex A, T. rex B (smoke green) and the T. rex (classic image colour).  These are rare collectables and difficult to obtain outside of Japan.  Production of these models has been limited and Everything Dinosaur has been able to acquire stocks of all three of these fantastic figures.  Each model measures approximately 29 centimetres in length and they have ten points of articulation.  The articulated joints are neck, upper jaw, ankles, forelimbs, the base of the tail (proximal end) and the end of the tail (distal).  All the figures have been carefully painted and beautifully designed and engineered.

The Rebor “Sweeney” Velociraptor Model Arrives

The latest Rebor replica figure, a 1/18th scale model of a running Velociraptor, nicknamed “Sweeney” has arrived at Everything Dinosaur.  This figure joins the range of Velociraptor figures offered including “Pete”, Spring-heeled Jack”, “Winston” and “Alex Delarge”.

A Striped Dromaeosaurid

This 1:18 scale replica of a running Velociraptor has an articulated lower jaw and articulated forelimbs.  The model’s colouration has been inspired by the extant tiger and with its stripes it is a very striking and colourful scale model.

The name “Sweeney” comes from “Sweeney Todd”, a very unsavoury fictional character from Victorian literature, a barber by trade who has a side-line in making pies out of the customers he kills with his cut-throat razor.  The sharp, sickle-shaped killing claw on the second toe of each foot of Velociraptor makes a suitable analogy for “Sweeney Todd’s” razor, however, whether this claw could be used to slash prey is debated.  Many palaeontologists believe that the enlarged toe claw that was held off the ground, could have helped to pin prey down, but it was not used as a slashing weapon, although the tip would have been quite sharp.

The picture (above), shows a close-up view of the feet of the running Velociraptor “Sweeney”.  Note the fine detail on the model and the way in which the second toe of each foot is held off the ground as the dinosaur ran.  This would have helped to keep the sickle-toe claw sharp.

The spectacular Rebor Velociraptor figure measures approximately twenty-two and a half centimetres in length. The head height (when perched on its sand texture base), is around eleven centimetres and the base itself, reminiscent of the sandy, desert environment in which Velociraptor mongoliensis lived, measures nine centimetres by four centimetres.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“It is wonderful to see another dromaeosaurid figure added to the exciting range of models manufactured by Rebor.  “Sweeney” is the last of the Velociraptor figures to be made for the foreseeable future, these 1:18 scale figures have proved extremely popular with discerning model collectors and we expect that “Sweeney” will soon become a firm favourite too.”
