The Super Senses of Thescelosaurus

By |2023-11-11T06:24:16+00:00November 11th, 2023|Adobe CS5, Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal News Stories, Dinosaur Fans, Main Page, Palaeontological articles|0 Comments

A newly published scientific paper, examining the skull of a bird-hipped dinosaur (Thescelosaurus neglectus), suggests that this dinosaur had remarkable senses. CT scans of the skull suggest that this Late Cretaceous herbivore possessed a unique combination of traits and indicate that Thescelosaurus may have spent at least some of the time underground. The study is the first to link a specific suite of sensory abilities with dinosaur behaviour.

If you live alongside Tyrannosaurus rex, then having a burrow or den to hide in might prove to be an effective survival strategy.

Studying the Skull of “Willo”

The skull used in the study comes from “Willo”, which is part of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences vertebrate collection. Thescelosaurus is a member of the Ornithischia. The genus was erected in 1913. It measured around four metres in length and weighed around 340 kilograms. That is about as heavy as a Jersey cow. In an ecosystem which included Triceratops, Edmontosaurus as well as T. rex, Thescelosaurus tends to be overlooked.

Thescelosaurus and super senses.
A newly published scientific paper which undertook a detailed analysis of the skull of a Thescelosaurus suggests that this relatively small, Late Cretaceous dinosaur may have lived underground.

Thescelosaurus neglectus – “Wonderful, Overlooked Lizard”

The binomial scientific name of this dinosaur translates as “wonderful, overlooked lizard”. However, undeterred by this dinosaur’s lack of sharp teeth, dermal armour, crests or horns – traits associated with some of its contemporaries, Dr David Button (Bristol University) began studying Thescelosaurus.

Dr Button built up a detailed, three-dimensional model of the skull using multiple CT scans. The brain and the inner ear were reconstructed. This allowed the researchers to determine the size of the brain and to build up a picture of the dinosaur’s senses.

Dr Button commented:

“We found that the olfactory bulbs – the regions of the brain that process smell – were very well developed in Thescelosaurus. They were relatively larger than those of any other dinosaur we know of so far, and similar to those of living alligators, which can smell a drop of blood from miles away.”

Dr Button added:

“Thescelosaurus may have used its similarly powerful sense of smell to instead find buried plant foods like roots and tubers. It also had an unusually well-developed sense of balance, helping it to pinpoint its body position in 3D space, another trait often found in burrowing animals.”

There is More to Thescelosaurus

Co-author of the paper, published in Scientific Reports, Dr Lindsay Zanno (North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences), stated:

“The irony is that palaeontologists generally think of these animals as pretty boring. When we first looked at our results we thought, yeah, this animal is plain as toast. But then we took a big step back and realised there was something unique about the combination of Willo’s sensory strengths and weaknesses.”

Limited Hearing

The scientists calculated that the hearing range of Thescelosaurus neglectus was extremely limited. It could only hear about 15% of the frequencies humans can detect, and between 4% to 7% of what dogs and cats can hear. In particular, T. neglectus was bad at hearing high-pitched sounds.

Dr Zanno explained:

“We found that Thescelosaurus heard low frequency sounds best, and that the range of frequencies it could hear overlaps with T. rex. This doesn’t tell us they were adapted to hearing T. rex vocalise, but it certainly didn’t hurt them to know when a major predator was tooling about in the area. More interesting to us was the fact that these particular deficiencies are often associated with animals that spend time underground.”

However, the researchers discovered that this dinosaur did have an excellent sense of smell.

T. neglectus may not have been particularly clever, not even for a dinosaur. It may have had limited hearing, but it had powerful arms and legs, a superb sense of balance and spatial awareness coupled with a keen sense of smell. These are all typical characteristics found in extant vertebrates that spend time underground or engage in digging behaviours.

Dr Button summarised the study:

“While we can’t say definitively that these animals lived part of their lives underground, we know that their ancestors did. This fact, together with their unique combination of sensory abilities, strongly suggests T. neglectus engaged in similar behaviours.”

Thescelosaurus neglectus – Not a “Boring” Dinosaur

Dr Zanno concluded:

“We still don’t know the sensory abilities of most dinosaurs. That makes it difficult to link these traits to specific lifestyles with confidence, but it also means there are plenty of cool discoveries to come. The idea that there might have been dinosaurs living under the feet of T. rex and Triceratops is fascinating. No matter what, we now know for certain that T. neglectus isn’t boring.”

Everything Dinosaur acknowledges the assistance of a media release from the University of Bristol in the compilation of this article.

Everything Dinosaur in collaboration with CollectA makes the second announcement about new for 2024 CollectA prehistoric animal models. Today, we can introduce two new CollectA dinosaurs namely:

  • A CollectA Deluxe 1:100 scale Dreadnoughtus.
  • CollectA Deluxe Velociraptor in 1:6 scale.

The CollectA Deluxe Dreadnoughtus is scheduled to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur early in 2024. Dinosaur fans will have to wait a little longer for the new Velociraptor figure. It is expected later in the year.

CollectA Deluxe Dreadnoughtus

Formally named and described in 2014 (Lacovara et al), Dreadnoughtus (D. schrani) is one of the largest terrestrial vertebrates known to science. Most super-sized titanosaurs are described from fragmentary material. Dreadnoughtus is an exception, approximately 45% of the skeleton was recovered. These fossils have provided palaeontologists with new information on the anatomy of giant dinosaurs.

Dreadnoughtus model scars.
The Dreadnoughtus fossil material comes from the Cerro Fortaleza Formation and there are theropods known from these deposits too, but not super-sized carnivores. The megaraptoran Orkoraptor is probably the largest carnivorous dinosaur, scars on the legs of Dreadnoughtus indicate attacks from packs of these animals, but they did not really stand much chance of bringing this huge dinosaur down. CollectA Deluxe Velociraptor

Next year (2024) marks the centenary of the scientific description of Velociraptor. This famous dinosaur (Velociraptor mongoliensis) was first described in 1924 (Osborn). To commemorate the hundred years since this dinosaur was first named, CollectA have introduced a 1:6 scale figure that reflects the very latest research.

Alamosaurus sanjuanensis

Alamosaurus sanjuanensis was named and described in 1922. Fossils associated with this huge dinosaur have been found in numerous Upper Cretaceous exposures covering the south-western United States. Size estimates vary, but a body length of around thirty metres has been proposed. Alamosaurus is the largest dinosaur described to date from Upper Cretaceous deposits of North America.

The notes that Everything Dinosaur received from PNSO made no reference to model scale. If this dinosaur did have a length of around thirty metres, then the PNSO Alamosaurus figure would be in an approximate scale of 1:72.

This impressive titanosaur figure stands 28.5 cm high and is 41.5 cm in length.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that the PNSO Alamosaurus was due to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in the middle of December (2023).

The spokesperson added:

“This is a fine titanosaur replica. We note that the design team at PNSO have added dermal armour. We think this is a hypothetical reconstruction. Although dermal armour is known in other titanosaurs, we are not sure whether fossilised scutes or osteoderms have been directly assigned to this genus.”

“Ocean Life in the Time of Dinosaurs”

By |2023-11-01T06:10:36+00:00November 4th, 2023|Adobe CS5, Book Reviews, Dinosaur Fans, Main Page, Photos|0 Comments

Princeton University Press has published a new book all about Mesozoic marine reptiles. Entitled “Ocean Life in the Time of Dinosaurs”. It documents the evolutionary development and radiation of a variety of amazing prehistoric creatures that dominated marine environments during the “Age of Dinosaurs”. Beautifully illustrated by Alain Bénéteau, this book, due out this month (November, 2023), dives into a fascinating period of our planet’s history.

“Ocean Life in the time of Dinosaurs”

The book is divided into seven main chapters. After an initial chapter that “sets the scene”, there follows an introduction to the different types of marine reptile. Chapter three highlights the marine reptiles that thrived during the Palaeozoic. Subsequent chapters focus on Mesozoic marine reptiles. There are individual chapters on Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous marine life.

As well as providing information on ichthyosaurs, mosasaurs and giant pliosaurs, the authors introduce some of the lesser-known Mesozoic marine reptiles. For example, the bizarre, Australian plesiosaur Umoonasaurus is described. Measuring around two metres in length, this is one of the smallest members of the Plesiosauria clade described to date. A piscivore, at home in shallow, near coastal environments, Umoonasaurus had crests over its eyes and a thin crest running along its rostrum. The purpose of these adornments is unknown.

A close-up view of the small Australian plesiosaur Umoonasaurus. It is an illustration from the book “Ocean Life in the time of Dinosaurs”. A stunning plesiosaur illustration by Alain Bénéteau.

The K-Pg extinction event is discussed, and the closing chapter examines how ocean ecosystems recovered with mammals and birds evolving to fill niches in marine food chains.

There is a helpful glossary and bibliography too.

A Collaboration Between Palaeontologists

“Ocean Life in the time of Dinosaurs” is a collaboration between four scientists. Nathalie Bardet and Alexandra Houssaye are palaeontologists and research directors at the prestigious Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (Paris, France). Stéphane Jouve is a palaeontologist and manager of the geoscience collections at the Sorbonne University (Paris). The fourth author is Natural History Museum of London palaeontologist Peggy Vincent. It has been translated by Mark Epstein.

This excellent book also provides readers with an opportunity to learn about ocean-going reptiles alive today such as sea snakes and turtles.

The new for 2024 CollectA Deluxe Dearc sgiathanach pterosaur figure in 1:3 scale. Due in stock at Everything Dinosaur in early 2024.

CollectA Deluxe Dearc sgiathanach

Dearc sgiathanach (pronounced jark ski-an-ach), is one of the largest pterosaurs described to date from Jurassic strata. The wingspan of this flying reptile may have been in excess of 2.5 metres. It was scientifically described in 2022 (Jagielska et al), and it has been assigned to the Rhamphorhynchidae family.

Model Measurements

The figure measures thirty-nine centimetres in length and it stands 15.5 cm tall. It is part of the CollectA Deluxe range of pterosaurs. This series has won praise for its depiction of a wide variety of flying reptiles, not just well-known pterosaurs such as Pteranodon, but also lesser-known genera such as Caiuajara and Caviramus.

The new for 2024 CollectA Deluxe Dearc sgiathanach is due to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in early 2024, probably around March (2024).

Isle of Skye Flag Inspires Colouration

The dentition and location of the fossil find indicate that this pterosaur was probably a piscivore. It may have had a similar position in the Middle Jurassic ecosystem as today’s extant northern Gannet (Morus bassanus). This seabird is extremely common on the Isle of Skye. The markings and colouration of this new CollectA model were also inspired by the flag of the Isle of Skye. The white circle around the eye of the model reflects a white circle that features on the island’s flag.

Dearc had acute vision, the bright colours chosen for the tail and for the top of the head suggests that visual cues helped this animal communicate with others of its kind.
