Remembering Rare CollectA Armoured Dinosaur Models

By |2026-09-20T11:59:04+01:00September 26th, 2026|Categories: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Animal Models|0 Comments

CollectA armoured dinosaur models are popular with model collectors.  Whether it’s a Stegosaurus, Miragaia or the replica of the Australian armoured dinosaur Minmi, there is a lot to admire in this range.  Collectors have a wide choice of figures.  In addition, CollectA often makes figures of less well-known armoured dinosaurs such as the controversial Wuerhosaurus.  The first armoured dinosaur figure the company produced was a Stegosaurus.  However, shortly afterwards a model of a Polacanthus (P. foxii) was added to the CollectA Age of Dinosaurs range. Intriguingly, when the Deluxe range was introduced, one of the first models produced was a replica of Hylaeosaurus.

Several of these early CollectA models have been retired.  However, Everything Dinosaur still stocks numerous early CollectA models and we are grateful for collector Robert Townsend for sending us a picture of two of these early replicas.

Robert built a detailed diorama, and he populated it with prehistoric animals associated with fossil finds from the UK. For example, Polacanthus foxii is known from the Wessex Formation, whilst Hylaeosaurus fossils are associated with the Grinstead Clay Member.  Both these formations are components of the geologically significant Wealden Group.

CollectA recently updated their Polacanthus figure.  A 1:20 scale replica was produced that was based on the latest research.

CollectA Deluxe Polacanthus.

The dermal armour of this member of the Ankylosauria clade has been carefully reconstructed on the figure. The arrangement of the spikes and bosses is largely speculative.  However, this CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale model has been highly praised for its attention to detail.

Mike from Everything Dinosaur thanked Robert for sending in the photograph of the two CollectA armoured dinosaur models and stated:

“A diorama depicting prehistoric animals from the Early Cretaceous was created. Amongst the iguanodontids and theropods, Robert had carefully placed some replicas of armoured dinosaurs. It is a pleasure to see the original CollectA Polacanthus accompanied by the large Hylaeosaurus figure.”

Stunning Colossosuchus Gular Shield Recreated on CollectA Model

By |2026-09-25T18:21:02+01:00September 25th, 2026|Categories: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Animal Models|0 Comments

The recently introduced CollectA Deluxe Colossosuchus techniensis model has some remarkable anatomical details. One feature in particular caught our attention. The underside of the throat has been given extensive armour. This represents the Colossosuchus gular shield. One characteristic feature of phytosaurs was a gular shield. This protective structure consisted of multiple, irregular osteoderms covering the underside of the throat. CollectA has carefully reproduced this distinctive armour on the Colossosuchus techniensis model.

The Colossosuchus Gular Shield

Phytosaurs were heavily armoured reptiles. They superficially resembled modern crocodilians. However, they were not closely related. Rows of osteoderms protected the back, but armour also occurred underneath the body. The new CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale model reflects this feature beautifully.

Large, irregular osteoderms cover the throat region of the replica. Together, these bony plates form a protective gular shield. The word “gular” refers to the throat region. Therefore, the term gular shield describes armour protecting the underside of the neck and throat.

This area could have been particularly vulnerable. Consequently, substantial dermal armour would have provided additional protection.

An Impressive CollectA Deluxe Colossosuchus Model

Colossosuchus techniensis was formally described in 2023. Fossils come from the Upper Triassic Tiki Formation of India. Moreover, the largest individuals may have exceeded eight metres in length. This makes Colossosuchus one of the largest phytosaurs known to science. The CollectA replica is approximately 21 centimetres long and is in 1:40 scale. It also has a movable jaw.

However, it is the attention paid to smaller anatomical details that makes this figure especially interesting. The carefully sculpted Colossosuchus gular shield is an excellent example.

Mike from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“There are not too many phytosaur replicas about. We praise CollectA for introducing this figure. There is much to admire with this phytosaur figure. It demonstrates how fossil evidence can be incorporated into a detailed prehistoric animal model.”

Model collectors have lobbied for a Sivatherium figure.  CollectA has delivered.  In addition, the Phytosauria are severely underrepresented by mainstream model makers.  The introduction of a 1:40 scale figure of a Late Triassic phytosaur from India is welcome.

Details of the two CollectA Deluxe models:

  • CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale Sivatherium giganteum model.
  • CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Colossosuchus techniensis model.

The Sivatherium figure measures over twelve centimetres tall at the shoulder and has an overall length of sixteen centimetres. An Everything Dinosaur Sivatherium fact sheet will accompany sales of this prehistoric giraffe model.

The Giant Phytosaur Colossosuchus (C. techniensis)

Colossosuchus was named in described in 2023 (Datta and Ray). It is one of the largest phytosaurs known to science. Size estimates vary but it could have reached a body length of around eight metres. Its fossils are from the Upper Triassic Tiki Formation of the Rewa Gondwana Basin of India. The CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Colossosuchus figure measures twenty-one centimetres long. Furthermore, it has an articulated lower jaw.

It is supplied with a free Colossosuchus techniensis fact sheet.

New CollectA Sivatherium Model Coming into Stock

By |2026-08-02T21:50:02+01:00July 26th, 2026|Categories: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Animal Models|0 Comments

The new CollectA Sivatherium figure is coming into stock at Everything Dinosaur.  Mike and Sue are looking forward to the arrival of the 1:20 scale model.  It will be in stock next month (August). The model of “Shiva’s beast” is in 1:20 scale.

CollectA Deluxe male Sivatherium giganteum.

The new CollectA male Sivatherium model shown in lateral view.

The CollectA Sivatherium Figure

This new for 2026 prehistoric animal model measures a fraction under sixteen centimetres long.  Those remarkable ossicones are around sixteen and half centimetres off the ground.  It represents a male Sivatherium giganteum. The Sivatherium forms part of the CollectA Other Prehistoric Animals model series. Model collectors have lobbied for a Sivatherium figure and CollectA have delivered in 2026. Fossils of S. giganteum come from the Siwalik Hills of India.

This prehistoric giraffid was formally named and described in 1836 (Falconer and Cautley). The CollectA figure depicts a powerful and robust animal. It has a strong, thick neck. The head is large and the muzzle tapers to a mouth with large, probably prehensile lips. These lips helped this enormous browser cope with tough thorns on the branches that it fed upon.

To view the CollectA Deluxe range of prehistoric animal models: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Animal Figures.

The CollectA Sivatherium figure has a scar on the left forelimb close to the scapula. This wound could have been caused by a predator. Sivatherium shared its ecosystem with some very large mammalian predators.  For example, there were sabre-toothed cats (Machairodontinae), other felids and other carnivores.  However, the damage to the animal’s shoulder could have been caused by a rival Sivatherium.  It is thought that just like modern giraffes, these large herbivores indulged in intra-specific combat.

A Model of a Prehistoric Giraffe

The Sivatherium genus was widespread. Fossils of species have been found in places as far apart as southern Africa and central Asia. Sivatherium giganteum was the largest species. Scientists have estimated that it was a heavy as an extant giraffe with males weighing more than 1.25 tonnes.

Mike from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Model collectors have been asking for a Sivatherium figure for a while now.  It is great to see that CollectA have added a model of this iconic animal to their model range.”

CollectA Deluxe Edmontosaurus Model Feeding on Some Conifers

By |2026-06-30T15:09:13+01:00June 23rd, 2026|Categories: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Animal Models|0 Comments

Thank you Caldey for sending us a photograph of your CollectA Deluxe Edmontosaurus feeding in the garden.  The dinosaur looks very much at home munching on some conifers.  Palaeontologists know from hadrosaur stomach contents that these Late Cretaceous herbivores did feed on conifers.  It is a delightfully composed photograph.  The viewing angle gives the impression that this is a large dinosaur. After all, Edmontosaurus is one of the biggest hadrosaurs known to science.

The CollectA Deluxe Edmontosaurus Feeding

This duck-billed dinosaur figure was introduced in 2022.  It is popular with dinosaur fans and model collectors.  Moreover, the model reflects what was known about Edmontosaurus and its integument at the time of production. For example, this dinosaur had large, irregular scales around its neck.  The CollectA Deluxe Edmontosaurus model has these scales, and they can be seen in Caldey’s photograph.  The subtle colours of the dinosaur model have been captured by the photographer’s lens.

The image is sharp and the figure is in focus.  The placing of the piece of conifer into the mouth is clever (and authentic).

Mike from Everything Dinosaur thanked Caldey for her photograph and commented:

“We always enjoy seeing how our customers use their imagination, and this photograph certainly made us smile. It is a wonderfully composed picture, with the CollectA Deluxe Edmontosaurus looking perfectly at home browsing amongst the conifers. The photographer has shown real creativity and a keen eye for detail. We are delighted Caldey chose to share their work with us, and we hope it inspires other collectors to get outdoors and create their own prehistoric scenes.”

Exclusive Views of the CollectA Deluxe Magnapaulia Model

By |2026-05-06T10:21:52+01:00May 10th, 2026|Categories: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Animal Models|0 Comments

The brief period of fine weather has permitted us to take some photographs of the CollectA Deluxe Magnapaulia model outside.  This splendid figure was introduced earlier this year.  It is a 1:60 scale model of the giant lambeosaurine Magnapaulia laticaudus.  It is already proving popular with dinosaur model collectors.

The CollectA Deluxe Magnapaulia Model

The CollectA hadrosaur figure measures a little over twenty centimetres in length.  The impressive hump on the back is approximately nine centimetres off the ground.  Although, the shape of the crest is unknown in this dinosaur it has been given a bright red crest that has been swept backwards from the skull.  In addition, this excellent dinosaur model has a bright red wattle.  This reflects the growing evidence for the presence of soft tissue structures in the Hadrosauridae.

To read an article about the discovery of a soft tissue crest in a saurolophine hadrosaur (Edmontosaurus regalis): Duck-billed Dinosaur with a Comb like a Rooster.

Some fossils representing skin tissue impressions are known.  The CollectA design team have worked hard to incorporate what is known about the integument of Magnapaulia into their figure.

Four New CollectA Models

The Tylosaurus is the only figure which is not to scale.  Furthermore, it is a replacement for the earlier CollectA Tylosaurus model which is now likely to be retired.  The Meraxes gigas model has an articulated jaw. In addition, it sports the reduced forelimbs which are a characteristic of this taxon.  It is a splendid theropod figure.  Lokiceratops is a welcome addition to CollectA’s range of horned dinosaur figures.  This centrosaurine, famed for its asymmetrical headshield was formally described just two years ago (2024).  Subsequently, the design team at CollectA have moved quickly to develop this ceratopsian replica.

A view of the dramatic headshield of the CollectA Lokiceratops model. The frill itself was asymmetrical. This unusual feature suggests that horned dinosaurs had more variety in their ornamentation than scientists previously thought.

Finally, the last of the four new CollectA models is a remarkable Magnapaulia.  It is a model of perhaps the largest lambeosaurine dinosaur known to science.  Its fossils come from the El Gallo Formation of northwestern Mexico.

Positive Comments and Feedback About the CollectA Gallimimus Figure

By |2026-02-22T14:10:31+00:00February 21st, 2026|Categories: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Animal Models|0 Comments

We are preparing a video short on the recently introduced CollectA Deluxe Gallimimus figure.  It’s time to highlight the beautiful details on the model’s base.  However, as we draft the script for our video, we looked at customer feedback for inspiration.

The official CollectA Deluxe Gallimimus model image.

Feedback on the CollectA Deluxe Gallimimus

This figure represents a modern interpretation of an ornithomimid.  It has a declared scale of 1:40. The model measures over sixteen centimetres in length.  The head height is an impressive eleven centimetres.  Gallimimus has attracted lots of positive comments from customers. For example, one purchaser commented that “CollectA is at the top of their game”.

In addition, we have collected other comments such as:

“I think Gallimimus might have been the most hotly anticipated figure from anyone! This is the first excellent ornithomimid I’ve seen in a while. I’m excited to see this Gallimimus, which I anticipate using along with my Struthiomimus flock as adjuncts to my tyrannosaurid dioramas. So far this has been a terrific series of introductions by CollectA, as far as I’m concerned.”

To view the range of CollectA scale prehistoric animal figures in stock: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Animal Figures.

Our video will explain the different tracks on the display base.  Also, we will look at the foot bones too.

Details of the Gallimimus base.

The model’s base shows some amazing details. There is a Gallimimus foot bone and Gallimimus tracks.

Accurately Reflecting a Gallimimus Fossil Locality

The details on the base accurately reflect a Gallimimus fossil locality.  The tracks and articulated foot bone on the base demonstrate that CollectA are reflecting an actual ornithomimid dig site. In one Gallimimus quarry palaeontologists discovered an isolated, articulated right foot. It probably had been part of a much more complete fossil specimen.  However, the site was raided by fossil poachers and the rest of the skeleton removed.  Furthermore, three-toed Gallimimus tracks were found at the site. These tracks were of different sizes indicating the presence of juvenile tracks as well as adult footprints.

We covered some of these aspects of the CollectA Deluxe Gallimimus model when we covered the launch of this figure: CollectA New Prehistoric Animal Models Part 4.

Once the model was introduced, Mike from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“It’s great to have a model of the largest ornithomimid known to science. If the base includes tracks and a foot bone it demonstrates that CollectA have paid attention to the fossil record. If the foot bone is present, then in a subtle way the manufacturer is raising awareness about the problem of poaching fossils.”

A Mysterious Tooth on the Base of the CollectA Deluxe Phorusrhacos Model

By |2026-02-20T15:37:06+00:00February 18th, 2026|Categories: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Animal Models|0 Comments

The prehistoric animal models made by CollectA are appreciated by model collectors.  Often it is the details that make these figures so impressive.  For example, the new for 2025 Phorusrhacos terror bird model is beautiful and scientifically accurate.  In addition, there is a canine tooth on the display base.  These predatory birds are often depicted in battles with the felid Smilodon.  However, Phorusrhacos lived long before the land bridge linking North and South America developed. Phorusrhacos (P. longissimus) was extinct millions of years before the Great American Biotic Interchange took place.

The taxon Phorusrhacos very probably never interacted with a Smilodon.

The terror bird Phorusrhacos model from CollectA has a tooth on its display base.

Explaining the Tooth on the Base of the Phorusrhacos Terror Bird Model

Team members at Everything Dinosaur like to help collectors and model fans.  They created a short video to explain that the tooth on the base probably represents a canine from a sparassodont. Sparassodonts are distantly related to marsupials.  They were native to South America, and they occupied many predatory niches.  Some forms evolved into wolf-sized carnivores. The tooth on the display is not from a Smilodon but from a sparassodont. Perhaps from a Borhyaena tuberata, a large predator very probably a contemporary of Phorusrhacos longissimus.

Mike from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“The video provides information about the tooth.  It tackles the misconception that Phorusrhacos may have competed against sabre-toothed cats.  It is true that later phorusrhacids, very probably encountered Smilodon.  However, the genus Phorusrhacos probably did not.  However, in the Miocene sparassodonts probably did compete with terror birds.”

New CollectA Prehistoric Animal Models for 2026 (Part 3)

By |2025-11-21T15:50:51+00:00November 21st, 2025|Categories: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Animal Models|0 Comments

Another announcement about new CollectA prehistoric animal figures for 2026.  In part three of this series, we announce two new CollectA models, a dinosaur and a remarkable prehistoric mammal distantly related to modern giraffes. CollectA will introduce a 1:20 scale replica of a male Sivatherium and a CollectA Magnapaulia model. Both will be available next year.

  • CollectA Age of Dinosaurs Popular 1:60 scale Magnapaulia – model measures approximately 20.5 cm long (Mag-nah-pawl-ee-ah)
  • CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale Sivatherium – model measures approximately 16 cm long, with a shoulder height of around 12.5 cm (See-va-fear-ree-um)

These figures will be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in 2026.

The new CollectA Magnapaulia model.

The CollectA Magnapaulia model, a replica of the giant lambeosaurine dinosaur from north-western Mexico.

Size estimates do vary but based on a twelve-metre-long dinosaur, a twenty centimetre figure is in 1:60 scale.

The New for 2026 CollectA Magnapaulia Model

Magnapaulia (M. laticaudus) is known from the El Gallo Formation (Campanian faunal stage) of Baja California in north-western Mexico. Fossil material excavated by field teams from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was originally thought to represent a large Lambeosaurus. Subsequently, the elongated neural spines led some scientists to speculate these fossils represented a giant Hypacrosaurus. However, in 2012 it was described as a new species of lambeosaurine hadrosaur (Prieto-Márquez et al).

The broad, deep and powerful tail can be seen in this new CollectA figure.  When the caudal vertebrae were first studied, their elongated processes led to the researchers proposing that this duck-billed dinosaur spent a lot of time in water.  However, this idea has fallen out of favour, and it was very probably almost entirely terrestrial.  The front feet reflect the latest scientific information regarding the hadrosaur manus (hand).  In addition, the hind feet are quite fleshy and padded, indicating the presence of hooves.

The CollectA 1:60 scale Magnapaulia figure.

The CollectA Magnapaulia model has a bright red crest, and the design team have given their figure a fleshy wattle running down the throat.

The new for 2026 CollectA Magnapaulia has a bright red head crest.  Although the shape of the head crest is not known, the shape chosen by CollectA is a fairly accurate interpretation of the crest shape based on comparisons with other lambeosaurines.  Furthermore, the crest shape mirrors the crest shape of the sister taxon Velafrons.

A Fleshy Wattle on the CollectA Magnapaulia Model

Intriguingly, the CollectA Magnapaulia model has been given a large wattle.  This fleshy structure runs down the throat and, like the crest it is also bright red in colour.  Wattles are found in many species of bird.  They are flap-like, fleshy skin growths that hang from the head or throat.  They are used for display and for sexual selection.  Although this feature is speculative for a hadrosaur its presence is plausible, especially when it is considered that these dinosaurs had crests and social signalling and display were probably extremely important.

In addition, Magnapaulia represents one of the largest duck-billed dinosaurs known to science.  Length estimates vary but it could have exceeded a body length of over twelve metres and weighed around ten tonnes.  A wattle on such a large animal would also assist with thermoregulation.  Blood vessels in the wattle could help to cool this large dinosaur.

CollectA Magnapaulia model.

The CollectA 1:60 scale Magnapaulia model shown in posterior view.

Skin impressions are known.  The tail of specimen number LACM 17712 preserves part of the integument.  The skin of this dinosaur was covered in irregularly spaced, large, rounded scales.  These in turn, were surrounded by much smaller hexagonal or round scales.  This integument has been reproduced in the new CollectA Magnapaulia figure.

CollectA Deluxe Sivatherium

The second new for 2026 figure announced in collaboration with our chums at CollectA is a Sivatherium model.  The model represents a male Sivatherium giganteum.  It is a 1:20 scale figure and forms part of the CollectA Other Prehistoric Animals model series.

CollectA Deluxe male Sivatherium giganteum.

The new CollectA male Sivatherium model shown in lateral view.

Model collectors have requested a Sivatherium figure and CollectA have delivered.  Fossils of S. giganteum come from the Siwalik Hills of India.  It was formally named and described in 1836 (Falconer and Cautley).  The CollectA figure depicts a robust and powerful animal, with a thick neck.  The head is large and the muzzle tapers to a mouth with large, probably prehensile lips.  These lips helped this enormous browser cope with tough thorns on the branches that it fed upon.  There is a scar on the left forelimb close to the scapula.  This wound could have been caused by a predator or perhaps by the ossicones of a rival male during intraspecific combat.

The CollectA Deluxe range of scale models: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Life Models.

CollectA Deluxe Sivatherium model.

The CollectA Deluxe Sivatherium giganteum model shown in anterior view.

A Male Sivatherium giganteum

Males possessed two pairs of ossicones.  The first pair were located just above the eyes and were quite small.  The second pair, located towards the back of the skull were much larger and palmate.  It is likely that the tips of these structures became bald as the animal matured (a characteristic observed in living giraffes).  The design team have given their prehistoric giraffe a very different colour scheme compared to a modern giraffe.  There is no reticulated pattern.  Instead, the CollectA Sivatherium model has been given a mainly grey coat with splashes of brown.

The black throat contrasts nicely with the lighter countershading colours of the underside.  These features, along with the white flash across the snout and the white circles around the eyes would have helped this male to display and intimidate rivals.  Although, smaller than a living giraffe, Sivatherium giganteum was probably at least as heavy. Mass estimates vary, but recent research suggests adult males could exceed 1.25 tonnes, making Sivatherium giganteum the heaviest ruminant mammal known to science.
