Picking Out a Papo Allosaurus for a Customer

The original Papo Allosaurus dinosaur model, a staple of the Papo “Les Dinosaures” model range, has been withdrawn from production and retired.  However, Everything Dinosaur still has stock of this popular theropod figure and a customer from Canada emailed us asking for more information about this particular Papo model and wanted to see some photographs of an Allosaurus prior to making a purchase.

Naturally, our dedicated, enthusiastic team members were happy to oblige.

Papo Allosaurus New Colour Variant

With the announcement that the original Allosaurus was being withdrawn, the French manufacturer was quick to introduce a replacement, a new colour version of this Late Jurassic, carnivorous dinosaur.  This new figure is based on the same sculpt and it too has an articulated jaw, just like the original figure, but the colour scheme has been changed.

Commenting on the response to the Canadian customer’s request a spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur stated:

“We get a lot of prehistoric animal model collectors asking us about models that have been recently retired.  We try our best to carry stock of as many different models and figures as possible.  If a customer requests a photograph of a figure prior to purchase, then we are happy to do this for them.  We select a model, take the photographs and email them over to the customer, if they are happy with the model, then we set it aside and when the order is placed we send out the figure.”

News of Papo Model Retirements

Recently, Everything Dinosaur provided information on Papo prehistoric animal figures that are being retired this year (2020), in total four Papo models are being withdrawn: Papo Model Retirements (2020).

Rebor Broodlord X-REX Pre-Order Available

Rebor will be introducing four brand new, innovative figures this year which combine elements of science-fiction with the Dinosauria.  The first of these figures “Broodlord”, the X-REX metallic variant will be available from Everything Dinosaur around the end of February and this model is available now for pre-order.

Science Fiction Combined with Science – Ne Plus Ultra!

Those talented people at Rebor have combined the anatomies of a Tyrannosaurus rex with an alien xenomorph to create this stunning and magnificently detailed collector’s item.  When Henry Fairfield Osborn described Tyrannosaurus rex in 1905, he justified the “tyrant lizard king” genus by stating:

“Tyrannosaurus, in reference to its size, which far exceeds that of any carnivorous land animal hitherto described”.   The famous American palaeontologist added…

“This animal is in fact the ne plus ultra for the evolution of the large carnivorous dinosaurs, in brief it is entitled to the royal and high sounding group name which I have applied to it.”

“Ne plus ultra” reflects Osborn’s view that T. rex was the ultimate theropod dinosaur, the apex in carnivorous dinosaur evolution.  It is true that more recent fossil discoveries have led palaeontologists to describe a number of gigantic and terrifying meat-eaters, but none have the popular appeal of the “tyrant lizard king”.

How fitting therefore for the design team at Rebor, to use a 1:35 scale Tyrannosaurus rex sculpt as the basis for this, the first of four fantasy figures that the company intends to introduce this year.

Rebor X-REX “Broodlord” (Metallic Variant)

Measuring around 43 cm from those monstrous, double jaws to the tip of that alien tail, this figure demonstrates stunning detail and the careful painting provides a demonic, wet-look to the model.  It certainly is a remarkable cross-over between two popular genres.  X-REX has a removable tongue, the arms can be rotated and placed in different poses and the tail is flexible, so it too can be posed in a variety of positions.

Scaling Up a Remarkable Shringasaurus

Shringasaurus Scale Drawing

Everything Dinosaur team members are busy preparing for the arrival of new for 2020 prehistoric animal models from Safari Ltd.  One of the new figures is a replica of the Middle Triassic, horned archosauromorph from India called Shringasaurus (Shringasaurus indicus).  Plans are advanced as we prepare for the arrival of the models, team members are already compiling the fact sheets that are to be sent out with these new additions to our product portfolio.

Shringasaurus

For Shringasaurus, as with the vast majority of the prehistoric animal models we supply, a scale drawing has been commissioned, primarily for use with the fact sheet.

Tale of the Tape

The actual model measures approximately 16.5 centimetres in length.  When Everything Dinosaur blogged about the formal naming and scientific description of this reptile back in the late summer of 2017* the length of this herbivore, based on the seven known specimens was estimated to have been around 3.5 to 4 metres.  Taking an average, Everything Dinosaur team members prepared the scale drawing (see above).  Although Safari Ltd do not publish a scale for these types of models, the new for 2020 Shringasaurus is in approximately 1:23 scale.

A Beautiful Atlasaurus Illustration

Illustrating Atlasaurus

Our thanks to Caldey who sent into Everything Dinosaur a beautiful illustration of the bizarre north African sauropod Atlasaurus (A. imelakei) which had been inspired by her recent purchase of the Eofauna Scientific Research Atlasaurus model.

An Illustration of the Middle Jurassic North African Sauropod Atlasaurus

Illustrating Atlasaurus.
An illustration of the north African sauropod (Middle Jurassic) Atlasaurus imelakei.

Atlasaurus imelakei

Known from a single fossil specimen discovered in sandstone sediments in the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region of Morocco.  Atlasaurus is just one of a handful of sauropods that have been found in north Africa and it is the most complete.  The fossils, believed to represent one animal, consist of a partial skull, a considerable portion of the postcranial skeleton and a partial tail.  This dinosaur is estimated to have been around fifteen metres in length.

Bizarre Sauropod Body Proportions

The body plan of this herbivorous dinosaur was very different from its better-known sauropod contemporaries from North America, China and Europe.  Its limb bones were proportionately longer than most other sauropodomorphs and its front legs were longer than its hind legs, so its back sloped from the shoulders to the tail.  Unusually, the neck was relatively short for such a large animal.  Scientists have postulated that the long limbs evolved to assist this dinosaur when feeding.  It could reach vegetation that other herbivorous dinosaurs could not reach.

An Extremely Detailed Iguanodon Illustration

Illustrating Iguanodon

Everything Dinosaur team members get sent lots of amazing prehistoric animal drawings, we really do have some supremely talented customers.  Today, we feature a pencil sketch from Ian, he has chosen to illustrate an iguanodontid.  From the heavy build, we suggest that this is an illustration of Iguanodon bernissartensis, however, it could just as well be an illustration of another robust iguanodontid such as Barilum dawsoni.

A Quadrupedal Stance

Ian has chosen to depict his ornithopod in a quadrupedal stance.  Such a large and powerful animal would have had little to fear from the predators that shared its habitat, although if threatened and needing to make a quick getaway, these animals could rear up onto their strong hindlegs and adopt a bipedal running gait.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Our thanks to Ian for sending into us his splendid pencil drawing of a stocky, robust iguanodontid.  It is always a pleasure to receive illustrations of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals.”

Rebor Stegosaurus Models in Stock

The trio of Rebor 1:35 scale Stegosaurus models called “Garden” are in stock at Everything Dinosaur.  All three colour variants – “Plain”, “Woodland” and “Mountain” have arrived and what a tremendous trio of thyreophorans they make!

Each figure is supplied with its own presentation base and the tail equipped with its “thagomizer”, slots neatly into the model to form a spectacular display piece  The colouration and finish on these models is really good, each figure has been given a glossy wash coat, which gives the plates a beautiful sheen and the dinosaur an attractive and realistic “wet-look”.

Stegosaurus armatus

Rebor have chosen to base these new armoured dinosaur figures on the Stegosaurus armatus species erected by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1877, from fossilised remains found in Colorado.  A victim of the bone wars, the first Stegosaurus species to be named is regarded by many palaeontologists as invalid, it has nomen dubium status, but since the first description of this Late Jurassic herbivore was published, Stegosaurus has gone onto become one of the most recognisable dinosaurs of all.

The Rebor replicas are superb, the different colour variants depict different potential habitats for this low browser.  It is hard to decide which one is our personal favourite.

Flexible Tails and Necks

The Stegosaurus figures have flexible necks and tails.  The tail can be placed in a variety of poses, those carefully crafted spikes on the end of the tail can be positioned in such a way as to indicate that the animal is striking at an attacker with its “thagomizer”.  The thicker, shorter neck is a little less flexible, but the head can still be turned and adjusted so that dinosaur fans can create their own, unique dioramas.

Detailed Bases

Each model is supplied with its own base, but if you acquire two or more of these Stegosaurus figures then the bases can be interchanged between the models.  After all, with such a huge appetite these armoured dinosaurs probably migrated quite large distances to find food, from the open plains to the woodlands and perhaps to higher altitudes to seek some relief from the hottest and driest part of the dry season.

Important News About Papo Model Retirements for 2020

Papo Prehistoric Animal Model Retirements for 2020

Everything Dinosaur team members recently announced what new Papo prehistoric animal models will be brought out in 2020.  In total, six new models will be introduced next year, five dinosaurs: New Papo Dinosaur Models for 2020 and for us, the stand out figure from Papo for 2020, a replica of Megaloceros New Papo Megaloceros.

Papo Prehistoric Animal Models

Today, we publish details of those prehistoric animal figures that are being withdrawn.  Being notified about retiring figures is important to collectors, with such a notice they can secure a model for their collection before they become too rare and difficult to obtain.

In 2020 Papo will retire the following:

  • Green Stegosaurus
  • Baby Pachycephalosaurus
  • Original Feathered Velociraptor model
  • Green Parasaurolophus

Papo Model Retirements

With the arrival of a new Stegosaurus colour variant it was always likely that the original, green Stegosaurus dinosaur model would go the same way as the Papo Allosaurus and be withdrawn from production.  This is indeed the case, the Papo green Stegosaurus dinosaur model has been retired.

The Papo Green Stegosaurus has been Replaced by a New Colour Variant Papo Stegosaurus

A New Papo Parasaurolophus Heralds the Demise of the Original Papo Parasaurolophus

As Papo develops a number of colour variants, then the original figures are very likely to be retired shortly afterwards.  The original Papo Parasaurolophus will be replaced by a new colour variant in 2020 and is already out of production.

The Original Papo Parasaurolophus Model is Being Retired

The new Parasaurolophus has certainly got a striking colour scheme, but many model collectors and fans of Papo will miss the original version with its more muted colours and tones.

Papo Baby Pachycephalosaurus and the Feathered Velociraptor

The Papo Baby Pachycephalosaurus dinosaur model is also being retired and production of this model has already ceased.  Readers of this blog might have suspected that this figure was under threat when Everything Dinosaur released news of the introduction of a new “bonehead”, a replica of Stygimoloch , which is likely to be available in the late summer/autumn of 2020.

In addition, the original feathered Velociraptor model, released in 2016 is also being retired.  It too is being replaced by a new colour variant.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We can now reveal which models are being retired from the Papo Les Dinosaures range.  By releasing this information now, model collectors still have the chance to acquire these figures before they become subject to inflated prices as found on internet auction sites.”

Everything Dinosaur still has stocks of these figures available, they can be found here: Papo Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Figures.

From Terrific Trilobites to Mighty Megalodon

CollectA have certainly developed a diverse range of models to be introduced over the next twelve months or so.  There is quite a range of geological deep time represented by the different taxa, from terrific trilobites of the Late Cambrian through the remainder of the Palaeozoic, the Mesozoic into the Cenozoic and with the nautilus, to the present.

We congratulate the design team at CollectA for providing such a variety of new models.  The first of these models such as the Protoceratops in 1:6 scale, are due out in quarter 1 of 2020, the rest of the figures will be in stock at Everything Dinosaur over the following few months.

With so  many models it is difficult to pick a favourite, however, team members are excited about the Orthoceras and it is great to see a representative of the elephant-sized dicynodont Lisowicia bojani coming into stock.  Our Polish customers are going to be particularly pleased to see L. bojani.

New for 2020 Papo Megaloceros

By |2024-01-06T15:25:54+00:00December 13th, 2019|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

New for 2020 Papo Megaloceros

Yesterday, Everything Dinosaur published details of five new dinosaur models coming out from Papo in 2020.  These models caused quite a lot of reaction, as was to be expected.  However, there is a sixth prehistoric animal due out from Papo next year, one that we deliberately chose not to include in our dinosaur themed blog post, it was only late in the afternoon that we posted up pictures of this sixth model on our social media sites.

Today, we can give this new for 2020 Papo prehistoric animal the platform it deserves, as there is going to be a Papo Megaloceros!

New for May 2020 the Papo Megaloceros

Papo Megaloceros model.
Papo adds a prehistoric mammal to its model range in 2020.  The Papo Megaloceros.

A Magnificent Papo Megaloceros Model

Megaloceros is an extinct member of the deer family (Cervidae).  One species, the largest and type species M. giganteus, is often referred to as the “Irish Elk”, although it was not restricted to Ireland and it is not that closely related to the Elk.  The Papo model depicts this giant deer (the largest species exceeded two metres in height at the shoulder), as a magnificent animal, those colossal antlers have been skilfully crafted and the paintwork and detailing are superb.  There have been models of Megaloceros produced before, perhaps most famously by Bullyland of Germany, but this figure has long since been retired.

It is great to see such a staple of European natural history museum extinct mammal galleries depicted as a model.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur explained:

“With five dinosaur models to announce we thought it best to introduce these first before turning our attention to the magnificent Megaloceros figure.  With many prehistoric mammal models, they can be lost in the swirl of excitement and debate that accompanies the release of information about new dinosaur replicas and figures, we wanted to give the new Papo Megaloceros room to breathe, as this in our view is a wonderful figure, our personal favourite of the new for 2020 Papo prehistoric animals.”

Due Out in May 2020

The Megaloceros model is likely to be available from Everything Dinosaur around May 2020, beating the introduction of the Papo dinosaur figures by several months.  We promise our blog readers that we keep them all posted about this model’s production and when it is going to be in stock.

Everything Dinosaur Announces New Papo Dinosaurs for 2020

By |2024-01-06T15:21:19+00:00December 12th, 2019|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|4 Comments

New Papo Dinosaur Models for 2020

Today, Everything Dinosaur has announced the new for 2020 Papo dinosaur models.  Information about five new figures has been released by Everything Dinosaur on its various social media platforms and this blog provides a little more information for Papo model fans and collectors.

New Papo Dinosaur Models

The five dinosaurs (Papo Les Dinosaures) are:

  • Chilesaurus
  • Giganotosaurus
  • Stygimoloch
  • Parasaurolophus new colour variant
  • Feathered Velociraptor new colour variant

All are not expected until late in quarter 3 2020 – that’s around September 2020.

New for 2020 Papo Chilesaurus Dinosaur Model

Papo Chilesaurus dinosaur model.
Papo Chilesaurus dinosaur model (available late quarter 3 in 2020).

Papo Chilesaurus

This little dinosaur from Upper Jurassic strata of southern Chile (hence the genus name), has caused stirs in the scientific community.  We expect Papo model collectors will be pleased to see one of the more unusual and lesser known members of the Dinosauria to be added to the Papo model range.  However, this three-metre long, probable herbivore, has had a significant impact in the way palaeontologists define the dinosaur family tree.

Since it was formally named and described in 2015, finding Chilesaurus a place within the Dinosauria as proved to be a bit of a challenge.  It has theropod, sauropod and ornithischian traits.  As such, when the Dinosauria was revised by Baron et al and the Ornithoscelida postulated once again, Chilesaurus was cited as providing evidence for this, it being a transitional form bridging the gap between the Theropoda and the Ornithischia.

Papo Giganotosaurus – New for Autumn 2020

Papo Giganotosaurus dinosaur model.
New Papo Giganotosaurus dinosaur model, new for 2020.

Papo Giganotosaurus

Rumours had been circulating for years that Papo might extend their range of carnivorous dinosaurs and include a Giganotosaurus.  In the autumn of 2020, model collectors will be able to add a Giganotosaurus to their dinosaur collection.  The pose is a quite old-fashioned and in reality Giganotosaurus had a very different posture, but team members at Everything Dinosaur suggest that given the colour scheme and the bias towards brown-coloured theropods within the current Papo range (think Gorgosaurus, T. rex and Cryolophosaurus), Papo had to find a way to make this new figure stand out.

It certainly is a very different pose to the other large, carnivorous dinosaurs in the current Papo range.  This posture also shows off those three-fingered claws nicely.  The Giganotosaurus will also have an articulated lower jaw.

Papo Stygimoloch

In the film “Jurassic World – Fallen Kingdom”, a Stygimoloch came to the rescue of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard (AKA Owen Grady and Claire Dearing), when it battered down a prison wall to help them escape.  “Stiggy” the Stygimoloch became a star!  Papo will be bringing out a replica of this bone-headed dinosaur in quarter three of 2020.

Papo Dinosaur Models

This year, Papo introduced new colour variants of popular dinosaur models (Allosaurus and Stegosaurus), in 2020 this will be repeated with the addition of a new colour version of the Papo Parasaurolophus and a new feathered Velociraptor model.

New Colour Variants Papo Parasaurolophus and Papo Feathered Velociraptor

The Papo Parasaurolophus seems to have been inspired by the colour scheme from the Acrocanthosaurus repaint that came out in 2018.  The new feathered Velociraptor model could represent a female, whilst the existing “Vélociraptor à plumes” in the range could portray a male.  We are sure fans of Papo models will draw their own conclusions about the first five Papo models that Everything Dinosaur has discussed today.
