A Review of the Inostrancevia Gorgonopsid Model

Inostrancevia – Vicious Predator of the Permian

Long before the dinosaurs evolved, other huge prehistoric reptiles roamed the land.  It is always a pleasure to see a new and unusual prehistoric animal added to a range of replicas and we were delighted by the introduction of Inostrancevia (gorgonopsid) by Safari Ltd.

In this short video, we review this model and discuss the therapsids and how they show fossil evidence of being ancestral to mammals.  We use the Inostrancevia model to highlight these anatomical characteristics.

Although the gorgonopsids did not survive into the Triassic, we marvel at their adaptations which made them fearsome predators.  One of the biggest was Inostrancevia and in the video we comment on the size and function of the huge “sabre-teeth”.  These over-sized canines were up to twelve centimetres long in the largest specimens.

To view Everything Dinosaur’s range of prehistoric animal models including the Wild Safari Dinos Inostrancevia (whilst stocks of this figure are available): Triassic Prehistoric Animal Models (Safari Ltd).

Although the Palaeozoic lasted much longer than the Mesozoic in terms of geological time, creatures that lived during this era tend to be under represented in the model ranges of manufacturers.  The gorgonopsids were a fascinating group of reptiles, we think they were the first vertebrates to develop sabre-like fangs, an evolutionary adaptation for tackling over vertebrates that has bene repeated on many occasions over the evolution of back-boned animals.

A Review of the Kaprosuchus Prehistoric Crocodile Model

“Boar Croc” Reviewed  – in Praise of the Safari Ltd Wild Safari Dinos Model

The welcome introduction of a Kaprosuchus prehistoric crocodile model into the Wild Safari Dinos model range  provides collectors and dinosaur fans with the chance to own a replica of a terrestrial crocodile.  Kaprosuchus, a fearsome predator of the Niger during the Cretaceous.  It allows us at Everything Dinosaur the opportunity to compare and contrast the land-based croc. Kaprosuchus with the aquatic crocodyliform Deinosuchus, which is also available as a model from Safari Ltd (September 2011).

Kaprosuchus Prehistoric Crocodile Model

In our video review, we discuss the fossil evidence which suggests that Kaprosuchus was a terrestrial carnivore – the stereoscopic vision, the robust, impact resistant snout and the strong neck are all characteristics of a predator that fed on land.  We pay tribute to the Wild Safari Dinos Kaprosuchus, it is a prehistoric crocodilian that has proved to be very popular with dinosaur fans and model collectors.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that it was wonderful to see model manufacturers such as Safari Ltd increasing the number of crocodilians and other non-dinosaur archosaurs within their replica ranges.

A Review of the Safari Ltd Prehistoric Crocodiles Toob

A Toob of Prehistoric Crocodiles

Really pleased to see the Safari Ltd prehistoric crocodiles toob, a tube of ten crocodile or crocodile-related models.  It is certainly fascinating to see these replicas of prehistoric animals that represent the diverse crocodilian lineage.  There is even a marine crocodile – Dakosaurus in the range, along with a Desmatosuchus, Sarcosuchus, a Rutiodon and a Champsosaurus.

The Everything Dinosaur Product Video Review

Hopefully, this five minute video will give viewers a little more information about the prehistoric animals featured in this, highly collectible set.  Most of the models represent animals from the Age of Dinosaurs (the Mesozoic), the exception is the Pristichampsus, a long-legged, hoofed carnivore whose fossils date from the Palaeogene.

Depicted by Safari as a crimson-coloured animal with black stripes along its back, scientists think that this crocodile, unlike its relatives that are alive today, lived mostly on land, pursuing and catching terrestrial mammals.   When the fossilised teeth of this animal were first studied, some scientists mistook them for the teeth of theropod dinosaurs and as a result it was speculated that some carnivorous dinosaurs had survived the Cretaceous mass extinction event.  It is always exciting to review a prehistoric crocodiles model tube for all those fans of prehistoric crocodile models.

To view the range of prehistoric animal models in the Wild Dinos Prehistoric World range: Wild Safari Prehistoric World Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animal Figures.

The models measure approximately nine to ten centimetres in length.  The largest model in the set is that of Sarcosuchus, which is very appropriate as this particular prehistoric crocodile that lived during the Cretaceous has been declared the largest prehistoric crocodile known in the fossil record and Sarcosuchus has an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as a result.

A Review of the Bullyland Dimetrodon Model

By |2023-03-08T09:20:24+00:00September 2nd, 2011|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Museum Line Dimetrodon Model Reviewed

One of the new additions to the Museum Line scale model range of prehistoric animals has been reviewed by team members at Everything Dinosaur.  It is always a pleasure to see a new model added to the range of prehistoric animals offered by the German manufacturer Bullyland, especially since Dimetrodon (D. grandis) is one of our favourite Permian animals. Here is our video review of the Bullyland Dimetrodon model.

Everything Dinosaur’s Review of Dimetrodon

Video credit: Everything Dinosaur

Dimetrodon was not a dinosaur, but a member of the Pelycosauria and as such it has been classified as a  synapsid reptile.  Why Dimetrodon is often featured in a model range that focused on dinosaurs always puzzles us.  Perhaps manufacturers just like to add a cool sail-backed reptile to their model series.

Whatever the reason, team members welcome the addition of a Dimetrodon figure to the Bullyland range of prehistoric animal models.

New Edition to the Papo “Dinosaures” Model Range – Ankylosaurus

The Everything Dinosaur video review of the new dinosaur model Ankylosaurus introduced by Papo of France.  A fine example of a model of an armoured dinosaur.  In this video we provide a little more information about the discovery of Ankylosaurus magniventris and compare and contrast the model’s features with the known fossil material of the Late Cretaceous herbivore.

Papo Ankylosaurus Model

The Papo “Les Dinosaures” model range has expanded this year with the introduction of three models, of these the Ankylosaurus is the last to be introduced.  The entire range, more appropriately called prehistoric animals due to the inclusion of replicas of Smilodon, cavemen, a Woolly Mammoth plus a marine reptile and a pterosaur consists of nineteen models.

We know that the French manufacturer has plans to greatly expand their “Les Dinosaures” range of prehistoric animal figures.  We remain committed to supporting Papo and hope to see more models of armoured dinosaurs added to the Papo range in the future.

A Video Review of the new “Terror Bird” Model – Kelenken

Ferocious Kelenken – A Video Review of the New “Terror Bird”

The fragmentary fossils of a huge phorusrhacid were discovered in Argentina in 2006.  The fossil material included a huge 46 centimetre long rostrum (part of the beak).  This rostrum is the largest found to date and when these fossils were formally described in 2007, the “Terror Bird” called Kelenken came into being.

Regarded, as perhaps the tallest of all the South American phorusrhacids, Kelenken was a formidable predator with a viciously curved beak.  Here is a video review made by Everything Dinosaur team members of the Collecta model of this amazing prehistoric bird from the Miocene.

A Video Review of the New Papo Sabre-Tooth Cat Model

Papo introduced a hand-painted Smilodon model into their “Les Dinosaures” range a few weeks ago.  Our team members at Everything Dinosaur, have already written a number of reviews and articles concerning this new replica from the French figure manufacturer.  As part of our product review, we have produced this short video that shows this new model and comments on the use of Smilodon fossil material to help re-create this predator from the Pleistocene.

These extinct predators seem to hold a fascination for many people, and no Ice Age tale such as 10,000 BC or indeed the trilogy Ice Age animated films can do without its resident Smilodons or Sabre-toothed cats amongst the cast of characters.

A welcome addition to the Papo “Les Dinosaures” model collection, a wonderful, hand-painted replica of that Late Cretaceous centrosaurine with the mean looking spikes on its neck frill – Styracosaurus. Everything Dinoaur team members have produced a short video reviewing the Papo Styracosaurus dinosaur model.

Papo, the figure and model manufacturers based in France are fast becoming firm favourites amongst professionals and model collectors when it comes to turning out authentic prehistoric animal replicas.  This sixteen centimetre model is a lovely example of a horned dinosaur and a credit to Papo’s designers and model makers.

Fixing a Wobbly Plastic Dinosaur Model a Helpful Guide

By |2024-04-20T07:52:34+01:00October 27th, 2010|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page|2 Comments

How to Repair a Plastic Dinosaur Model

Sometimes, we encounter a problem with a dinosaur model, the model will not stand upright.  This effects mainly bipeds, models of prehistoric animals such as Carnotaurus, Allosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex for example.  It can be a little frustrating when this happens, however it is worth remembering that the Dinosauria were especially adapted to a cursorial lifestyle and their stance was one of the reasons for their success.

Plastic Dinosaur Models

Dinosaurs walked on their toes, unlike us humans who walk on the whole of the foot.  Most reptiles sprawl with their legs at the side of the bodies, but dinosaurs carried their limbs directly underneath their bodies, just like mammals.  This is a much more efficient method of walking about when compared to the sprawling stance of lizards and crocodiles for instance.

However, having  a two-legged dinosaur model that does not stand upright is no fun, so we at Everything Dinosaur have produced a short video that explains how immersing the plastic model in very hot water for a few seconds can allow you to correct the pose and then get the dinosaur to stand up properly.

Fixing a Wobbly Dinosaur

Fixing a wobbly dinosaur by immersing the model in hot water, is quick and easy to do.  You will find that the plastic model becomes much more malleable and you can manipulate the legs so that the model can stand upright.  By fixing a model in this way, you will become very popular with the young dinosaur fans in your household and you won’t have to make the toy dinosaur extinct.
