William Reviews the New PNSO “Andrea” Female T. rex

By |2024-08-26T17:50:52+01:00November 25th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Dinosaur fan and model enthusiast William sent into Everything Dinosaur his review of the PNSO Andrea the female T. rex figure. William has been avidly collecting PNSO prehistoric animal models and figures for a while now. He was delighted when “Wilson” a new version of Tyrannosaurus rex was introduced recently and has been able to acquire the “Andrea” female T. rex figure so that the male and his mate can be together.

PNSO Andrea the female T. rex dinosaur model in lateral view
Although the position of the hind legs in this resting pose is controversial it is great to see a manufacturer introduce a figure of a theropod dinosaur in a prone, resting position. The reviewer praised the position of the front limbs and commented on the detailed musculature hinted at by the skin folds.

PNSO Female T. rex Model Review

William started his review by praising PNSO for all the wonderful figures that they have introduced this year and he was looking forward to seeing what marvels the company would launch in 2022.

The head sculpt is highlighted for its detail. William commented that the artist Zhao Chuang did his research into whether this theropod had lips, explaining that osteological research has identified large facial scales present beyond the margin of the upper mandible and therefore no lips have been added to this figure. The fully articulated jaw is well designed and the lower jaw fits into the upper jaw exactly. As the dinosaur is in a resting pose, to display it with the jaws open, the model’s head must be positioned over the edge of a shelf or slightly raised.

The eyes are placed correctly to indicate stereoscopic/binocular version and the sclera is coloured a dark yellow/reddish hue with a black pupil. William stated that the eyesight of this apex predator was believed to be particularly acute T. rex could pick out prey even when the intended victim was hidden in cover.

In Praise of the Skin and Texture

The painstaking care taken to get the skin texture on the head so detailed is highlighted by the reviewer.

He comments that:

“The lacrimal crests are on the money and converge onto the nasal crest. No shrink wrapping on his antorbital fenestrae and orbits.”

The robust teeth are impressive and the mouth has been painted correctly in a rich, wet pink to give a natural look and William stated that if this dinosaur lost a tooth, then a replacement would erupt from the jaw. Tongue placement was accurate with a nasal opening in the roof of the palate also observed. William praised PNSO for these additional highlights.

The stocky body shape was commented upon in William’s review, both the male PNSO T. rex figure “Wilson” and his partner are regarded as having “ample heft”, the arms and figures of Andrea were praised. The shoulder muscles hidden under the skin folds were discussed and the muscles depicted in the tiny arms highlighted. William commented that the arms held close to the body gave the figure a natural resting pose.

PNSO Andrea the T. rex measures 19.7 cm long, accounting for the curve of the tail. The model is 13.8 cm wide and it has a stated scale of 1:35. The reviewer preferred to give the model’s measurements in imperial units.

Model Supplied with a Beautifully Illustrated Book

As befits a replica from PNSO with the talented palaeoartist Zhao Chuang on their team, this T. rex model comes with a beautifully illustrated book. The narrator comments on the position of the hind legs the presence of a cloaca and comments that this meat-eater looks poised ready to rise from her slumbers adding:

“Andrea’s powerful leg muscles are outstanding we can imagine her rising straight up in heartbeat to defend or feed.”

William explained that this figure is supplied in a superb white box, there is no need for a support stand for this dinosaur model, the prone position of the model is perfectly stable.

Comments on the Colour

The female T. rex has a much darker face with rich hues consisting of blacks and charcoals from the tip of the snout running along the upper jaw line rising upwards around the eyes with a column of black reaching up to fuse with the darkened crown of the skull. The reviewer comments that the chosen colour scheme “sets the head sculpt off to perfection”.

Model Dimensions

William states that the PNSO “Andrea” the female T. rex measures:

  • Length 12 inches
  • Height 2.75 inches

He concludes his review by stating:

“Andrea is worth adding to your collection! She is a true Tyrant Queen and accurate rexes come but once in one’s life.”

Our thanks to William for sending into Everything Dinosaur his review.

Rebor Killer Queen T. rex Diorama

By |2022-10-25T09:24:36+01:00November 21st, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

Our thanks to dinosaur model fan and collector James who sent into Everything Dinosaur some pictures of his Rebor Killer Queen T. rex dinosaur diorama. The Rebor Killer Queen T. rex in the “plain” colour scheme seems very much at home on this display, moving away from a damaged vehicle lying on its side with a tyre having been torn off a wheel. James has even added a water-filled T. rex footprint to add extra realism to his diorama.

Rebor Killer Queen "Plain" Dinosaur Diorama
The Rebor Killer Queen dinosaur diorama (anterior view), the tyre that has fallen off the damaged jeep can be seen on the left and the T. rex footprint is just behind the tyre.

The Trouble with T. rex

Tyrannosaurus rex might be the most popular choice for dinosaur model manufacturers but producing a large T. rex model such as the 1:35 scale Rebor Killer Queen does have some drawbacks. For example, as the vast majority of the meat-eating dinosaurs were bipedal, model designers have a tricky time of it, trying to balance their creation, when only the hind feet were in contact with the ground for most of the time.

Factories can make the hind feet oversized or perhaps include a transparent support stand to improve stability. Sometimes the best thing to do is to accept that if a dinosaur model is going to be anatomically in proportion, then the addition of a bespoke display base can make all the difference.

James has created a stunning dinosaur diorama, team members at Everything Dinosaur are reminded of the iconic scene in the film “Jurassic Park” when the Tyrannosaurus rex escapes from its enclosure.

The Rebor Killer Queen T. rex dinosaur diorama (dorsal view). A bird’s eye view of a non-avian dinosaur!

Stability issues with dinosaur models can often be fixed with a little bit of creative thinking. The Rebor Killer Queen T. rex figure looks very much at home on its bespoke display base.

A water-filled T. rex footprint on the display base. When creating a display base, it is often the little details and touches that really bring the display to life and help to tell a story.

A Superb Dinosaur Display

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We have some very clever customers! We enjoy seeing prehistoric animal model displays and collections, this diorama made by James is a really stunning piece, we are grateful to him for sending us the photographs and giving us permission to share them with our blog and social media followers.”

The Rebor Killer Queen T. rex diorama

It’s the Little Details and Extra Touches

When making a prehistoric animal diorama, it is often the little details and extra touches that elevate a piece. Take for example the exquisite jeep on its side, the vehicle is very dirty and muddy after its mauling by the tyrannosaur and James has taken care to get the mud splashes and smears just right. He has even ensured the underside of the vehicle is caked in mud too. The rear tyre has nearly been ripped off, caused by a bite from a T. rex no doubt.

Our congratulations to James for such a clever creation and our thanks to him for sending in the photographs to Everything Dinosaur.

New CollectA Models for 2022 (Part 3)

By |2024-08-26T17:30:38+01:00November 19th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

Today, team members at Everything Dinosaur are pleased to be able to make a third announcement about new CollectA prehistoric animal models for 2022. Despite all the difficulties brought about by the global pandemic (COVID-19), the dedicated and hardworking staff at CollectA have managed to create a diverse range of new for 2022 figures and we are proud to announce the addition of a CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Edmontosaurus dinosaur model.

The figure is due to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in 2022, a spokesperson for the UK-based mail order company was not able to give an exact date as to when this figure would be available.

CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Edmontosaurus dinosaur model
The new for 2022 CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Edmontosaurus dinosaur model. CollectA had wanted to introduce a replica of this iconic Late Cretaceous hadrosaur for some time.

Edmontosaurus – Realising an Ambition

The design team at CollectA had wanted to make a model of this iconic North American hadrosaur for some years. Recent fossil discoveries have led to a reassessment of this hugely successful Late Cretaceous herbivore. For example, a spectacular “mummified” specimen nicknamed “Dakota”, as the fossil was discovered in North Dakota (1999), has provided detailed information on this dinosaur’s skin and the CollectA team wanted to incorporate this new information into their Edmontosaurus figure.

In addition, a well-preserved skull of an Edmontosaurus (E. regalis) revealed that this dinosaur sported a soft comb on the top of its head, rather like the soft tissue crest of a rooster. The new for 2022 CollectA Deluxe Edmontosaurus sports a rather fetching, red-coloured crest on the top of its head.

A view of the head of the CollectA Edmontosaurus
A close-up view of the head of the Edmontosaurus replica with its prominent crest. This crest reflects the evidence of a soft tissue comb reported in 2013 following the analysis of the skull of an Edmontosaurus regalis.

Explaining why CollectA wanted to add an Edmontosaurus to their range of duck-billed dinosaur figures, designer Anthony Beeson stated:

“I was very keen to create a model of this hadrosaur to incorporate the new information we have concerning the hoof arrangement of the front feet, together with the scaling and soft crest suggested by the fossil record.”

Duck-billed Dinosaur Model Measurements

The new CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Edmontosaurus measures an impressive 34 cm in length and the figure stands some 12.5 cm high at the hips. It will scale up nicely with the feathered T. rex model introduced by CollectA in 2015. The CollectA Deluxe feathered Tyrannosaurus rex is about the same length as the new Edmontosaurus figure but as a biped, it is taller.

Everything Dinosaur Reviews New CollectA Models (Part 2)

By |2023-07-15T11:46:35+01:00November 18th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Team members at Everything Dinosaur have created a video review of the second batch of new for 2022 CollectA prehistoric animal models to have been announced. This video, which has been posted up on the company’s YouTube channel highlights the new 1:20 scale CollectA Deluxe Smok wawelski model and the fabulous Permian nautiloid Cooperoceras.

Everything Dinosaur looks at the second batch of new for 2022 CollectA prehistoric animal models to be announced.

Smok wawelski and Cooperoceras texanum

The video review lasts approximately 11 minutes and 50 seconds. The narrator explains some of the challenges that model manufacturers have faced with the global pandemic and praises CollectA for their new prehistoric animal figures. Some of the science behind the creation of the Smok wawelski model is explained. It might be a quadruped and reminiscent of a pseudosuchian (crocodile lineage of the Archosauria), the Everything Dinosaur video explains why the model does not look like a theropod dinosaur.

CollectA Deluxe Smok wawelski.
The new for 2022 CollectA Deluxe Smok wawelski replica reflects the view that this large Late Triassic predator was not a theropod dinosaur.

New CollectA Models

The video examines the diet of this formidable predator and looks at the fossil bones and coprolites associated with Smok, the largest, terrestrial carnivore described to date from the Late Triassic of central Europe. The second model to be featured is the Cooperoceras replica. How this bizarre, spiny nautiloid came to be discovered is explained and the narrator highlights the range of CollectA invertebrate models and discusses how fossils of ammonites and other animals can be used to help date strata.

CollectA Cooperoceras
The new for 2022 CollectA Cooperoceras model continues the company’s fine tradition for creating replicas of important Palaeozoic invertebrates.

In Stock at Everything Dinosaur in 2022

Both the CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale Smok wawelski and the CollectA Cooperoceras models will be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in 2022, although at this stage the video narrator was unable to give a precise date as to when these two excellent figures would be available.

New for 2022 Papo Prehistoric Animal Models Announced

By |2024-08-26T16:27:31+01:00November 17th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|2 Comments

The new for 2022 Papo prehistoric animal models have been announced. There will be two new models, a Protoceratops along with a Mosasaurus and a new colour variant of the Papo Styracosaurus dinosaur model. The first of these new figures is scheduled to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in the second quarter of next year.

The new for 2022 Papo models in the “Les Dinosaures” range:

  • A new colour variant of the Papo Styracosaurus (scheduled for quarter 2 of 2022).
  • A replica of the early horned dinosaur Protoceratops (scheduled for quarter 3 of 2022).
  • A marine reptile model – Mosasaurus (scheduled for quarter 4 of 2022).

The new for 2022 Papo Styracosaurus colour variant. This is the first new Papo dinosaur model scheduled for 2022, it is due to be available in quarter 2 2022.

Papo Styracosaurus (New Colour Variant)

The first model to be announced by Papo for 2022 is a new colour variant of the Styracosaurus dinosaur which originally came out in 2011. The muted tones and emphasis on the greens, junipers and moss colours have been well received by dinosaur fans and model collectors. The sculpt is essentially the same as the 2011 version, the new model measures 16 cm in length, it is the same size as the original Papo Styracosaurus figure.

Although no official announcement has been made about retirements from the Papo range, with the arrival of the new Styracosaurus colour variant in quarter 2 of next year, team members at Everything Dinosaur expect the original Styracosaurus to be withdrawn from production.

Papo Protoceratops Dinosaur Model

Next year marks the centenary of the discovery of the dinosaur fossils in the Gobi Desert by an American led expedition that resulted in the naming and scientific description of “First Horned Face”. To commemorate this expedition and to honour the significant contribution to palaeontology made by the scientists, Papo is bringing out a replica of Protoceratops (P. andrewsi).

The Papo Protoceratops is scheduled to arrive at Everything Dinosaur’s warehouse some time in quarter 3 of 2022.

Papo Mosasaurus model
The new for 2022 Papo Mosasaurus model, complete with its dorsal fin. We think that this figure is reminiscent of the giant mosasaur seen in the “Jurassic World” film franchise.

Papo Mosasaurus Marine Reptile Model

The third model that has been announced, the only non-dinosaur, is a model of the Late Cretaceous marine reptile Mosasaurus.

Papo has a Tylosaurus and a Plesiosaurus replica in the “Les Dinosaures” range and the Mosasaurus will, no doubt, be welcomed by fans of the “Jurassic World” movie franchise. The Mosasaurus replica is similar to the giant Mosasaurus associated with the films “Jurassic World” and its sequel “Fallen Kingdom”. The artwork created by Papo to illustrate their new for 2022 figure, pays homage to a poster used to promote “Jurassic World when it came out in 2015.

Everything Dinosaur team members are aware of rumours circulating that Papo was to introduce a Kronosaurus model in 2022. We can assure our customers and social media followers that this rumour is not true, there will only be three prehistoric animal models introduced by Papo next year.

The Mosasaurus figure is due to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in quarter 4 of 2022.

In Stock at Everything Dinosaur in 2022

It is good to see that Papo are able to get some prehistoric animal figures out in 2022. Like many companies the on-going issues of the global pandemic and the chaos with logistics and production has made the making of new dinosaur and prehistoric animal figures particularly challenging.

New CollectA Models 2022 (Part 2)

By |2024-08-26T16:07:19+01:00November 12th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|3 Comments

New CollectA Models 2022 (Part 2)

Today, team members at Everything Dinosaur announce the second set of new for 2022 CollectA prehistoric animal models. Although, due to all the various issues caused by the global pandemic, CollectA, like most manufacturers will introduce fewer figures than usual next year, they are certainly setting extremely high standards.

The two new for 2022 figures we announce today are:

  • CollectA Deluxe Smok wawelski with an articulated jaw (1:20 scale)
  • CollectA Prehistoric Life Cooperoceras

Scheduled for delivery in early 2022, Everything Dinosaur will keep model collectors informed about shipments.

New for 2022 CollectA models (part 2).
The second batch of CollectA models have been announced (2022) the archosaur Smok wawelski from Poland and the armoured nautiloid Cooperoceras from North America and Europe.

Smok wawelski – A Polish Dragon!

CollectA will be adding a replica of the Late Triassic predator Smok wawelski to their model range next year. Fans of the CollectA range will know that in 2020, a 1:20 scale replica of the giant, Polish dicynodont Lisowicia bojani was introduced. Fossil remains of a large carnivore were also found at the same site. The bonebed in southern Poland close to the village of Lisowice, also revealed the presence of a five-metre plus archosaurian meat-eater. Named and described in 2011, Smok wawelski is the largest terrestrial predator known from the Late Triassic of central Europe.

CollectA Deluxe Smok wawelski.
The new for 2022 CollectA Deluxe Smok wawelski replica reflects the view that this large Late Triassic predator was not a theropod dinosaur.

A Taxonomic Puzzle

When first studied, it was thought that the fossilised remains represented a theropod dinosaur. The braincase had several anatomical traits reminiscent to those seen in the skulls of allosaurids. Subsequent fossil discoveries have thrown doubts on whether Smok is a dinosaur. It may not belong to the dinosaur/bird lineage of the Archosauria at all, Smok could be a member of the Rauisuchidae, or perhaps a prestosuchid from the crocodile branch of the Archosauria. Designer Anthony Beeson has opted to depict this powerful predator as a quadruped, a member of the crocodile lineage of archosaurs. The 1:20 scale model has an articulated jaw.

CollectA Deluxe Smok wawelski model.
The new CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale Smok wawelski has an articulated lower jaw.

CollectA Cooperoceras

The second new for 2022 CollectA figure we announce today, is a beautiful model of the bizarre nautiloid Cooperoceras. A spiky cephalopod distantly related to the living nautilus. CollectA have made several replicas of iconic Palaeozoic invertebrates in recent years. For example, in 2020 the company added a model of a nautilus to their model range (N. pompilius). The introduction of Cooperoceras adds to the list of important zonal fossil models made by CollectA. These replicas represent Palaeozoic and Mesozoic invertebrates, fossils of which assist with the dating of strata (biostratigraphy).

CollectA Cooperoceras
The new for 2022 CollectA Cooperoceras model continues the company’s fine tradition for creating replicas of important Palaeozoic invertebrates.

Cooperoceras was an early nautiloid with a shell measuring 4 inches (101.6 mm) long and 3 inches (76 mm) high.

The genus and type species C. texanum was erected by the American geologist Arthur K. Miller in 1945 following an extensive period of fossil collecting in the Glass Mountains and the Sierra Diablo of western Texas undertaken by several scientists in a bid to better understand the diversity of Permian-aged nautiloids which were very poorly known in comparison to the contemporary ammonites.

Originally thought to have been confined to the Permian, in 1977, a new species of Cooperoceras was named and described (C. milleri) from much older deposits (Shumway Limestone Formation of the Mattoon Formation, Illinois). This discovery suggests that these types of nautiloids were present in the Late Carboniferous.

Explaining how Cooperoceras (Cooper’s horn) came to be added to the CollectA portfolio, designer Anthony Beeson stated:

“It had an amazing and tactile open coiled shell with flattened sides and sporting recurvant hollow spines on its outer edge which was the reason that I wanted to do a model of it. I think it may be popular with children. It lived in the shallow seas over what is now Texas and Illinois, and the Urals in Europe.”

Model Measurements

  • CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale Smok wawelski with an articulated jaw length 27 cm, height 8.5 cm.
  • CollectA Cooperoceras nautiloid model length 11 cm, height of shell 8.3 cm.

These figures are scheduled to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in the early part of 2022. Due to the current difficulties with logistics and global shipping, we are not able to give a precise date as to when these figures will be available. Team members will do all they can to update customers with regards to availability.

The New Eofauna Konobelodon atticus

By |2024-05-11T22:56:47+01:00November 10th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

The next prehistoric animal model to be added to the Eofauna Scientific Research range is a fabulous model of the ancient elephant Konobelodon atticus, the figure is in 1:35 scale and is Eofauna’s first “shovel-tusker” model.

The figure is scheduled to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur early in 2022 (estimated arrival time at the UK warehouse – February 2022).

Eofauna Konobelodon atticus
The new for 2022 Eofauna Konobelodon atticus model is supplied with a data card and Everything Dinosaur will also provide a product fact sheet with sales of this figure.

Konobelodon atticus

Konobelodon was an enormous amebelodontid, one of the very last of its kind. Several species have been described since the first fossils associated with this genus were studied in the mid-19th century. It is characterised by its pair of huge, flattened tusks in its lower jaw and its extremely long pair of straight tusks in its upper jaw. The model represents Konobelodon atticus, fossils of which were first discovered in Greece (Late Miocene deposits).

Eofauna Scientific Research Konobelodon atticus
The stunning Eofauna Konobelodon model measures 23 cm long and stands approximately 11 cm high.

Konobelodon atticus was originally named Mastodon atticus by the German palaeontologist and zoologist Johann Andreas Wagner in 1857. The extensive, Miocene-aged deposits at Pikermi on the Attica peninsular of Greece, were discovered by Bavarian soldiers, part of the army of the Bavarian prince Otto, who ruled Greece for thirty years from 1832 until he was deposed in 1862. Fossils of large mammals were exposed on the surface and this attracted German field teams from various institutions and universities to excavate and study the fossil material

More than 40 mammal species were named following these excavations. A large, left maxilla (upper jawbone), that was described by Wagner led to the erection of the species Mastodon atticus, in the mistaken belief that this prehistoric elephant was closely related to other European elephant fossils that had been studied by the influential French anatomist Georges Cuvier, who first used the term “Mastodon” to describe fossil elephants in 1806.

Mastodon atticus?

Wagner, who was a professor at the University of Munich, published a series of comprehensive treatises on the Pikermi field work on behalf of the University and in 1857 he erected the species Mastodon atticus, in the publication Neue Beiträge zur Kenntniss der fossilen Säugthier-Überreste von Pikermi (New Contributions to the Knowledge of the Fossil Mammalian Remains of Pikermi).

Eofauna Konobelodon model
The Eofauna Scientific Research Konobelodon figure is in approximately 1:35 scale.

A Revision of Prehistoric Elephant Taxonomy

Thought to be closely related to the taxon Amebelodon, a second species was named in 1990 based on fossils found in Florida. It was considered to be a sub-genus of Amebelodon (Konobelodon britti). Phylogenetic analysis failed to resolve the taxonomic position of Konobelodon fossil material within the Amebelodon genus and a re-assessment of the phylogeny was undertaken in 2014, resulting in the establishment of Konobelodon as a distinct genus. Notable differences in the European K. atticus and the American K. britti resulted in both being declared separate, but related species. A third species of Konobelodon (K. robustus), was named and scientifically described in 2016, based on fossils found in north-western China (Linxia Basin).

Konobelodon model
Originally named in 1857, Konobelodon atticus has had a long and complicated taxonomic history.

New CollectA Models 2022 (Part 1)

By |2024-08-26T15:39:42+01:00November 5th, 2021|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|3 Comments

New CollectA Models 2022 (Part 1)

Today, we introduce the first batch of new for 2022 CollectA prehistoric animals. The last eighteen months or so have been extremely challenging, it is great to be able to introduce to you the first of the new for 2022 prehistoric animal figures and replicas from this highly respected manufacturer.

  • CollectA Deluxe Pteranodon sternbergi with an articulated jaw (1:20 scale).
  • The CollectA Deluxe Spinosaurus swimming with an articulated jaw (1:40 scale).
  • CollectA Deluxe Paraceratherium.

Scheduled for delivery in early 2022, Everything Dinosaur will keep model collectors informed about shipments.

CollectA Deluxe Pteranodon sternbergi
The new for 2022 CollectA Pteranodon sternbergi model. A very colourful replica of a Late Cretaceous pterosaur sometimes referred to as Geosternbergia.

CollectA Deluxe Pteranodon sternbergi in 1:20 Scale

The stunning CollectA Deluxe P. sternbergi figure is a replica of a pterosaur that was formally described in 1966, following the discovery of fragmentary fossil material in 1952. A broad crest suggests that this figure represents a male. The Pteranodon genus has been subject to much revision over recent years. Although, Pteranodon sternbergi fossils tend to be associated with older strata than Pteranodon longiceps material, their taxonomic relationship remains controversial. Some palaeontologists have proposed that P. sternbergi is sufficiently different from P. longiceps to warrant it being placed in it own genus – Geosternbergia. Whatever the phylogeny, this new for 2022 pterosaur figure with its articulated jaw is a welcome addition to the CollectA Deluxe range.

CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale swimming Spinosaurus

CollectA Deluxe Swimming Spinosaurus in 1:40 Scale

The first batch of new CollectA models includes a dinosaur. The CollectA Deluxe swimming Spinosaurus is an updated version of the Prehistoric Life swimming Spinosaurus figure introduced in 2015 (100 years after Spinosaurus aegyptiacus was named and described) and recently retired.

In 2015, CollectA was the first toy company to make a model of S. aegyptiacus based on the comprehensive reassessment undertaken the previous year in a scientific paper entitled “Semiaquatic adaptations in a giant predatory dinosaur” (Ibrahim et al). In 2020, some of the research team behind this earlier paper examined Spinosaurus tail bones (caudal vertebrae) and concluded that this huge theropod had a tail well-adapted for propelling it through water. The new for CollectA 2022 Spinosaurus reflects this research. The model has been given a broad and very fin-like tail.

Commenting on the introduction of this new figure, model designer Anthony Beeson stated:

“In order to keep up with the science, we have now produced an updated deluxe model that incorporates the new information showing the deep, amphibian-style, tail that powered the animal while swimming. The Spinosaurus has a new colour scheme and an articulated jaw. I have retained the 2015 shape of the sail although some have cast doubts on it.”

CollectA Deluxe Paraceratherium

The third model to be announced is an updated Paraceratherium replica, which replaces the original figure that was retired in 2019. The CollectA Deluxe Paraceratherium represents a male and it reflects recent research that suggests that it possessed a short, muscular proboscis, reminiscent to that of a modern tapir – to which it was very distantly related (member of the Perissodactyla – odd-toed ungulates).

The CollectA Deluxe Paraceratherium has a short trunk.
The new for 2022 CollectA Paraceratherium model has been given a short trunk (proboscis).

One of the largest land mammals known to science, analysis of cranial material suggests that this herbivore might have had a short trunk or a prehensile upper lip. The design team at CollectA have opted for the former. They have also given it patches of coarse hair a characteristic seen in some extant ungulates.

Although a giant (some specimens suggest a body weight of around 20 tonnes), the CollectA figure is quite lightly built and designer Anthony Beeson speculates that it probably wallowed in mud or indulged in dust baths to help control its body temperature.

When discussing the figure’s size, Anthony stated:

“The model’s size has had to be a compromise between what is suitable for display in shops and for manufacturing.”

Model Measurements

  • CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale Pteranodon sternbergi with an articulated jaw – length 15 cm, height 13.5 cm.
  • The CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale swimming Spinosaurus – length 37 cm, height of sail 11 cm.
  • CollectA Deluxe Paraceratherium – length 22 cm, height 14.7 cm.

These three figures are scheduled to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in the early part of 2022. Given the current difficulties with logistics and global shipping, we are not able to give a precise date as to when these figures will be available. Team members will do all they can to update customers with regards to availability.

The latest Everything Dinosaur YouTube video updates viewers on the product safety tests the company commissioned on the ITOY Studio Dilophosaurus sinensis dinosaur model. The video also explains why product testing is important and explains the steps Everything Dinosaur takes in order to legally import prehistoric animal figures.

ITOY Studio Dilophosaurus sinensis

The ITOY Studio Dilophosaurus (D. sinensis) figure has had a limited production run. It is going to be more expensive to purchase than dinosaur toys that are predominately aimed at children. Furthermore, it is only going to be available from a specialist retailer such as Everything Dinosaur. These are all arguments to suggest that this is an adult collectable figure and not a toy. As such, it falls outside the UK Toy Safety Regulations 2011 and the EU Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC). Product tests are still required and this is why Everything Dinosaur acquired a sample and had this figure tested by Eurofins under the General Product Safety Assessment protocol.

Coming into Stock at Everything Dinosaur

The video narrator explains that the company responsible for printing the product packaging has incorrectly labelled the box with a CE mark. As far as we at Everything Dinosaur know, this model has not been tested under the EU Toy Safety Directive and no certificate stating conformity has been produced (Declaration of Conformity).

If this item was to be offered for sale with the CE mark clearly visible, this would be illegal. Fortunately, thanks to the independent product testing commissioned by Everything Dinosaur, team members know what they have to do to overcome this problem.

Working with Eurofins and their recommendations, Everything Dinosaur has been able to bring into stock this exciting dinosaur model.

Confirming that this dinosaur collectable was heading for the company’s UK warehouse, a spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur stated:

“The ITOY Studio shipment has been delayed. Many vessels are encountering delays at the moment and there are long waits for ships to be unloaded at ports. However, we hope to have this Dilophosaurus collectable in stock at Everything Dinosaur before Christmas.”

Only 500 of each of these incredibly special models have been made. There are no plans to make any more, once current stocks have sold out, then that will be that! Deinosuchus is known from numerous fragmentary remains. It lived during the Late Cretaceous inhabiting both sides of the Western Interior Seaway. Distantly related to modern alligators, it may have preferred estuarine habitats and with an estimated body length of approximately 12 metres, it was an apex predator and some palaeontologists regard it as the one of the largest crocodyliforms to have ever existed.
