A Site of Special Scientific Interest – The Dee Cliffs at Farndon

Cheshire has some remarkable geology. For example, over the weekend we visited the Dee Cliffs at Farndon. This is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). These sandstone strata were laid down during the Triassic Period. At this time in Earth’s history, much of England was low-lying desert, with an extremely hot and arid climate. Wind-blown sand formed huge dunes reminiscent of today’s Sahara Desert. The dry desert landscape was punctuated by ephemeral lakes and seasonal rivers, carrying sediment from large mountain ranges in the north, west and south. The rivers deposited their sandy sediment, which over millions of years hardened to form sandstone.

The red colour of the rock is caused by oxidation of iron (rust) in the desert conditions.

Cheshire’s Triassic Sandstone Cliffs

Layers of sandstone can be identified in these cliffs. They slope at various angles. This is referred to as “cross-bedding” and it is formed when sediment is deposited in fast-flowing rivers or strong ancient winds. The cross-bedding provides a record of ancient palaeocurrents (wind or water). These sedimentary structures are inclined at an angle to the main bedding plane. Cross-bedding is a primary sedimentary structure, meaning it forms when the deposits are laid down. It’s a valuable tool for geologists as it helps interpret depositional environments. For example, geologists can determine the direction of the water flow by examining these structures.

Seeing these ancient structures helps us to appreciate that remarkable geology that can be seen around Cheshire. These sandstones provide a window into deep time and highlight an extreme palaeoenvironment.

Plesionectes longicollum – A Remarkable New Species of Marine Reptile

A new species of Early Jurassic plesiosaur has been named based on a detailed examination of an almost complete fossil specimen discovered nearly fifty years ago. The articulated specimen represents a skeletally immature individual, and it has been named Plesionectes longicollum. Writing in the open-access journal PeerJ, the researchers identified several unique anatomical features of the fossil that permitted the erection of a new taxon. For instance, this plesiosaur had an exceptionally long neck. At least forty-three cervical vertebrae have been identified. The count hampered by the poor state of preservation of the skull.

The fossil material had been studied previously. For example, evidence of soft tissue preservation had been identified on the neck, tail and rear limbs. In addition, V-shaped neurocentral sutures have been identified. Furthermore, this animal had between twenty and twenty-one dorsal vertebrae, one of the highest counts known among Lower Jurassic plesiosaurs.

Moreover, the fossil was excavated from a different horizon from the famous oil shales exposed near to Holzmaden. It is much older than other plesiosaurs known from the Posidonia Shale (Posidonienschiefer Formation). The remains of this marine reptile are thought to be around 183 million years old.

Plesionectes longicollum

Researcher Sven Sachs (Naturkunde-Museum Bielefeld, Germany) in collaboration with his colleague Daniel Madzia from the Polish Academy of Sciences, conducted the first detailed osteological examination of the fossil material. This fossil is surprisingly large compared to other plesiosaurs known from the Posidonia Shale. It measures approximately 2.95 metres long, but when the head is included, this marine reptile would have measured around 3.2 metres in length.

The genus name derives from the Greek for “close” or “near”, referring to its plesiosaur affinities, and the Greek word for “swimmer” a common suffix in plesiosaur taxon nomenclature. The species name derives from the Latin and means “long neck”.

Discovered in 1978

The fossil material was found in 1978. It was discovered by Gotthilf Fischer in his own quarry in Holzmaden. The specimen was prepared by its discoverer and in 1979 it was acquired by the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde (Stuttgart).

In personal correspondence with Everything Dinosaur, researcher Sven Sachs outlined the direction of his future studies. He intends to commence a reassessment of the famous genus Plesiosaurus.

Sven commented:

“It will surely take a few years to visit all the collections where Plesiosaurus material is housed, to analyse the data, and to write it all up, but this will be a fun project as it is such an iconic taxon.”

In summary, this newly described species helps to define the remarkable diversity of Lower Jurassic plesiosauroids known from Germany. In addition, it invites renewed examination of specimens in museum collections.

Innovative Product Packaging for an Innovative Dinosaur Model

The new Everything Dinosaur Evolution Tyrannosaurus rex model is not just an amazing figure, it has amazing packaging too. At Everything Dinosaur, we are passionate about improving sustainability in our industry. We want to be a more responsible manufacturer. For example, we have developed innovative model packaging for our range of figures.

Explaining Our Plans for More Responsible Manufacturing

We commissioned videos to help explain the work we do. A key element that differentiates Everything Dinosaur Evolution is the compostable and recyclable packaging. The tray the model is securely packed in is 100% compostable. Furthermore, the soft cloth that the T. rex is wrapped in is recyclable like other textiles. Also, the cardboard packaging is fully recyclable. There are no single use plastics. We do not use plastic bags or plastic trays.

Moreover, unlike most other manufacturers, we do not use EPE foam (Expanded Polyethylene foam), in our packaging. Whilst EPE foam is technically recyclable, this plastic foam requires processing before reuse and not all recycling facilities accept it. Huge volumes of EPE foam end up in landfill.

The Coronosaurus brinkmani Scale Drawing

Previously thought to represent an early species of Centrosaurus, a phylogenetic assessment led to a reappraisal and the establishment of a new taxon. Coronosaurus brinkmani was erected in 2012. It is known from two extensive bonebeds from the Oldman Formation of southern Alberta. The species name honours Canadian palaeontologist Donald Brinkman. Now retired, Don was a distinguished palaeontologist and long-time researcher in palaeoecology at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta. The species name recognises his significant contribution to understanding Late Cretaceous ecosystems.

Most horned dinosaurs have individual bony horns or spikes along the top edge of their neck frills. Each one is attached to a separate spot. Uniquely, Coronosaurus grew dozens together in a single cluster. Moreover, this feature has not been found in other ceratopsians. It has been suggested that this unusual ornamentation played a role in species recognition or mate selection.

Unfortunately, there was no note, so we do not know who sent them. The sender could be a customer, a freight forwarder, a manufacturer, or even a member of our trademark team in China. Furthermore, We have many contacts in China, so we are at a loss to know exactly who to thank.

A Dinosaur with a Digital Product Passport

We’re also proud to launch what we believe is a world-first digital product passport for a dinosaur model, giving you details about design, science, and sustainability at your fingertips. A digital product passport (DPP) links a digital record to a physical, consumable product, detailing its lifecycle, manufacture, materials and environmental impact. This technology is being rolled out across Europe. Users will be able to access our dinosaur model’s DPP by scanning a smart QR code on the box. In addition, a second smart QR code can be found on the collector card envelope inside the box. The DPP provides transparency for customers. Furthermore, it supports the circular economy. One day, all dinosaur models will require a digital product passport.

An Exclusive Guizhouichthyosaurus Scale Drawing

Everything Dinosaur team members have prepared an exclusive Guizhouichthyosaurus scale drawing in preparation for the arrival of a new PNSO figure. Guizhouichthyosaurus (G. tangae) is known from south and southwestern China. It was a large ichthyosaur possibly a member of the Shastasauridae family. This ichthyosaur is known from several, pancaked specimens. Including near complete individuals. Size estimates vary but some fossils indicate an adult animal length in excess of seven metres.

A Guizhouichthyosaurus Scale Drawing

The scale drawing has been commissioned for use in a free fact sheet that will be sent out with the new PNSO Guizhouichthyosaurus figure. This marine reptile model is due in stock at Everything Dinosaur shortly.

An amazing specimen measuring 4.8 metres in length found in 2010 but not formally described until 2020 contained the remains of another marine reptile, a 4-metre-long thalattosaur (Xinpusaurus xingyiensis). This most likely represents the oldest record of megafaunal predation by a marine reptile and the oldest example of megapredation.

A Generalist Feeder

Guizhouichthyosaurus ate other prey items as well, as evidenced by a G. tangae specimen preserving fish bones as well as some bivalves in its stomach region. Another specimen contained around a kilogram of gastroliths. Gastroliths (stomach stones) in ichthyosaurs is rare. It has been suggested that these stones were consumed accidently, perhaps during feeding on bivalves and worms on the seabed. The gastroliths were different to the surrounding fossil matrix. This indicates that these stones were collected in a different environment from where the carcase of the animal settled.

Young and Imaginative Palaeoartist Phoebe Creating Unique, Colourful Dinosaurs

At Everything Dinosaur, we’re always thrilled to see how prehistoric animals spark creativity. For example, we admire the artwork and illustrations of young dinosaur palaeoartist Phoebe Ginger. Phoebe has been a loyal customer of Everything Dinosaur for over five years. Sue and I met up with Phoebe at this year’s Lyme Regis Fossil Festival. It was a pleasure chatting to this talented artist.

Her drawings are full of bold, bright colours. The artwork features confident lines and her passion for prehistoric animals, especially dinosaurs shines through.
