A Review of the Wild Safari Dinos Pachyrhinosaurus Dinosaur Model

Wild Safari Dinos Pachyrhinosaurus Gets Reviewed

Safari Ltd are keeping up their trend of introducing at least one new  model of a horned dinosaur every year with the introduction of this Pachyrhinosaurus replica into the highly rated Wild Safari Dinosaurs model range.   Last year for example, we had Diabloceratops and the year before that we had the beautiful Vagaceratops dinosaur model.

Wild Safari Dinos Pachyrhinosaurus

Pachyrhinosaurs have gained a lot of attention recently since they starred in the “Walking with Dinosaurs in 3-D” movie and it is great to see a high quality replica added to the Safari Ltd “Wild Safari Dinosaurs”.

Pachyrhinosaurus gets its name (thick-nosed lizard) from the thick ridge of bone found between the eyes on the dinosaur’s muzzle.  Palaeontologists are unsure whether this thick pad supported a horn lacking a bony core, perhaps the horn, if it ever existed, was  made out of keratin.  This type of horn would not fossilise easily and the only evidence of its presence would be the facial pad (known as the boss), preserved on the skull.

The design team at Safari Ltd have chosen to reflect the consensus of scientific opinion and have not fitted their dinosaur replica with a substantial nose horn.

Three Species Recognised

Currently, three species of Pachyrhinosaurus are recognised, we at Everything Dinosaur think that this Wild Safari Dinos replica is based on fossils of the first of the Pachyrhinosaurs to be described Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis.

The skin texture is quite remarkable and a lot of very fine detail is shown on this brown and sandy coloured dinosaur model.   Safari Ltd are to be congratulated for the fine job done on the painting.  The model accurately reflects the known pachyrhinosaur fossil evidence and larger, circular dermal scales have even been picked out on the flanks and at the top of the limbs.

The model measures approximately 17 cm long, based on an adult Pachyrhinosaurus measuring around 7 metres in length it is estimated that this Wild Safari Dinos model is in  around the 1:40 scale mark or thereabouts.  It even has the correct number of digits (manuals and pedals) on the limbs.

The ornamentation, consisting of a number of bony processes around the head and those famous epoccipitals, has been very carefully portrayed by the designers, this replica is a really good representation of Pachyrhinosaurus.  Let’s hope that although Pachyrhinosaurus was one of the last of the great North American horned dinosaurs to evolve, this model is around for a very long time.

To view Everything Dinosaurs range of dinosaur models including Wild Safari Dinosaurs: Safari Ltd. Prehistoric World Figures.

This is an exciting addition to the Wild Safari Dinosaurs model range made by Safari Ltd and it is always a pleasure to see a North American horned dinosaur interpreted as a prehistoric animal replica.  The detail and the quality of the painting of this Pachyrhinosaurus is bound to make it a popular model choice amongst collectors.

Dinosaur Duvets and Curtains Turning Bedrooms into Dinosaur Land

Here’s something to get young dinosaur fans swishing their tails and roaring with excitement, Everything Dinosaur has added a dinosaur duvet and matching curtains set to their ever growing range of dinosaur bedroom accessories.  Just what mums and dads need to help turn bedrooms into a child’s very own dinosaur land of adventures.

Dinosaur

Many children seem to love prehistoric animals and really enjoy learning about these reptiles that once roamed our planet before a sudden extinction event wiped them out along with about seventy percent of all land animals some sixty-five million years ago.  Whether it is the fearsome, formidable Tyrannosaurus rex or the immense Apatosaurus (formerly known as Brontosaurus), children seem to be fascinated with these amazing creatures.

Dinosaur Duvet

The dinosaur duvet set is sized to fit a single bed and comes complete with matching pillow case.  The high quality 50% cotton, 50% polyester material has a wonderful patchwork effect design that shows lots of dinosaurs.  There is even a set of dinosaur footprints in the pattern, they make it look like a dinosaur has just stomped across the bed.  This was a particular feature of the dinosaur duvet set that our young reviewers and testers loved.  Mums too were impressed, with the quality of the duvet and the fact that it comes with a matching pillow case.

This dinosaur bedding range has been approved by the dinosaur experts at Everything Dinosaur, it was noted that the duvet and pillow case also had some words clearly presented as part of the pattern.  One parent pointed out to us how helpful this was it “helped my son to remember his letters”.  As a company staffed by teachers as well as dinosaur fans this was music to our ears.

The single duvet set measures a generous 198 cm by 137 cm and as you can tell from the comments above it has been well received by our testers.

Palaeontologists Might Find this Tricky

Now for the curtains, to a team of palaeontologists, understanding the measurements and the importance of making sure the curtains were properly lined proved to be a bit tricky.  Thankfully, there was a geologist on hand to explain that these dinosaur curtains were fully lined and came supplied with their own matching tie backs.  The curtains measure 167 cm wide with a 183 cm drop (x 2 for the pair) and they are made from the same material as the dinosaur duvet.  All in all, this dinosaur duvet and matching dinosaur curtains set are a winning combination.

Wild Safari Dinos and Prehistoric Life Elasmosaurus Model Reviewed

By |2023-03-01T23:22:48+00:00December 14th, 2013|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Elasmosaurus Model (Safari Ltd) Under the Spotlight

New to the Wild Safari Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Life model series manufactured by Safari Ltd for 2013, is this replica of Elasmosaurus, a member of the plesiosaur group, one of the last types to evolve and a marine reptile with approximately half of its entire body length made up by its extraordinarily long neck.

Elasmosaurus was named and described by the American palaeontologist Edward Drinker Cope from fossils discovered in Wyoming.  He had a preconceived idea that this sort of creature would be propelled through the water by its tail.  This in part, explains why when it came to reconstructing the holotype material,  Cope ended up putting the head on the tail, a mistake that was pointed out to him much to his subsequent embarrassment.  The design team at Safari Ltd have avoided such errors and this model is a very accurate representation of an elasmosaurid.

Cretaceous Plesiosaur

Focusing on the neck, this model is posed with the neck slightly curved, but a swan-like posture has been avoided.  The neck is held out almost horizontally from the body and this reflects the current scientific thinking regarding these Late Cretaceous plesiosaurs.  The small head on the end of that enormous neck could permit Elasmosaurus to approach shoals of fish in order to hunt, without the fish being too alarmed.

There are some wonderful details on the head.  Firstly, the teeth are thin and give the impression of being needle-like.  The teeth in the upper jaw of this model project forward in a very pronounced way, this reflects elasmosaurid teeth very accurately.  Their teeth being perfectly evolved to interlock, trapping any poor unfortunate fish that should have strayed within range.  The jaws themselves give an indication of being very powerful. The back of the skull is widened slightly to give the impression of the presence of strong jaw muscles.  The eyes although small,  are positioned above the mid-line of the skull, which again reflects what is seen in the fossil record.

The Model Reflects the Known Fossil Material Accurately

The body of the model and those four wing-like paddles give this replica a certain rigidity.  It is likely that Elasmosaurus was a predator of the open ocean, ambushing prey by attacking from below using its strong flippers to provide the burst of speed necessary for an attack.  Compared to the neck, the tail is relatively diminutive, but the model makers have successfully avoided making the tail too stumpy.  The creases and folds in the skin at the base of the tail and also seen halfway up the tail on the other side hint at movement – which is a nice touch.

Muted Colouration

Compared to other Safari Ltd marine reptile models, the colouration is quite muted.  The top of the body is painted a dark green colour, which contrasts nicely with sandy coloured underside. The detailing around the head has been enhanced by careful painting.

The skin itself has a stippled effect and feels quite rough to the touch.  We are not aware of Elasmosaurus skin impressions being preserved within the fossil record.  However, fossilised skin impressions from earlier Jurassic plesiosaurs suggest that the skin was relatively smooth, any scales present may have been extremely small, although on some parts of the body the skin may have been slightly wrinkled.

This Elasmosaurus model from Safari Ltd does reflect the known fossil material well and it represents an extremely good reconstruction of this Late Cretaceous marine reptile.

The name Elasmosaurus means “plate lizard”, a reference to the substantial, plate-like shoulder bones that covered this animal’s chest and formed the arm sockets.  These “plates” anchored the huge muscles of the front limbs that helped to power this large animal through the water.

The latest video created by Everything Dinosaur team members has been completed.  It is a review of the Dimorphodon model which is part of the Wild Safari Dinos and Prehistoric Life model series made by Safari Ltd.  This model was introduced in 2013 and it is always a pleasure to see a new pterosaur replica in a mainstream model range.

In this six minute video review, we look at the Dimorphodon model and discuss features such as the large head, the different shaped teeth seen in the jaws and the curved claws on the hands and feet.  We then reflect on what the known fossil data tells us about Dimorphodon and explain how the model relates to the fossil material.

A Review of the Dimorphodon Flying Reptile Model (Safari Ltd)

A recent addition to the Wild Safari Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Life model series made by Safari Ltd is this replica of an early pterosaur, a flying reptile known as Dimorphodon.  The first fossils of this Jurassic creature were found by Mary Anning as she searched for specimens along what is now known as the “Jurassic Coast”.  This fossil was found in 1828 (although some sources claim 1827) and it is currently housed in the Natural History Museum in London, although it is rarely displayed as this specimen is missing its head.

Dimorphodon

Frustratingly, little is known about the origins and evolution of the flying reptiles but thanks to a handful of excellent fossil specimens, palaeontologists have been able to piece together, literally in most cases, quite a bit of data about Dimorphodon.  It is one of the better known members of the Pterosauria with fossils having been found in Europe and a possible second species having been identified from fossil material of Early to Middle Jurassic age from Mexico.

“Two Form Tooth”

The genus name means “two form tooth”,  a reference to the different size and shape of the teeth, an observation first noted by Sir Richard Owen, the man responsible for coming up for a name for the Dinosauria.  The model makers at Safari Ltd have been careful to depict their Dimorphodon with the teeth at the front of the jaws being long and fang-like with smaller teeth towards the back of the mouth, accurately reflecting what is seen in the fossil material.

The head of the Dimorphodon model is quite broad and deep.  Again this mirrors what is found in the fossil record.  Proportionately, the head is much larger than that seen in other long-tailed Jurassic pterosaurs. It has been estimated that Dimorphodon may have weighed almost twice as much as similar sized flying reptiles.

This said, the bones in the skull are extremely thin and light, little more than struts and studies suggest that Dimorphodon had a relatively weak bite.  Although, found in coastal and marine deposits many palaeontologists believe that this pterosaur may not have dined exclusively on fish as was previously thought.  Its main prey may have been insects.

Wild Safari Dinos Dimorphodon

Safari Ltd have painted their Dimorphodon replica in predominantly tan and dun colours, with the wing membranes given brown and black markings on their dorsal surface and brown underneath.   This contrasts nicely with the lighter colouration on the pterosaur’s body.  The skin has been textured to give the impression of a covering of fine, downy, insulating body hair.

This pterosaur had large eyes and it is pleasing to note that this detail has been picked up by the design team with the head of this figure particularly well painted and the eyes are very prominent.

We think this model represents Dimorphodon macronyx, the species found by Mary Anning almost two hundred years ago now.  The species name means “big claws” in reference to the large claws on the forelimbs which were probably used to help this pterosaur climb trees or up cliffs.  Safari Ltd have given their Dimorphodon large and curved finger and toe claws, once again reflecting the known fossil material.

Fossil hunting can be fun but beware of the cliffs.

A Long Tail on the Model

The model has a long tail, Dimorphodon is known to have had a least 30 vertebrae making up its tail.  Safari Ltd have also tipped the tail with a diamond shaped rudder, although we are not certain as to whether or not Dimorphodon actually possessed such a feature.  Mathematical models assessing the flight capabilities of this pterosaur with its relatively heavy body and its broad wings suggest that taking to the air was energetically demanding and when airborne flight may have been somewhat laboured, Dimorphodon flight trajectories have been described rather unflatteringly as a “graceful plummet”.

It is always a pleasure to see a member of the Pterosauria added to a model range, especially one with links to the Jurassic coast of southern England and this well-crafted replica is already proving popular with serious collectors.

To view the range of prehistoric animal models (Safari Ltd) available from Everything Dinosaur: Wild Safari Prehistoric World Models.

Dimorphodon may have been the first pterosaur to have been closely studied in England, it was only the third pterosaur genus to be established and it has enabled scientists to piece together more information about the flight capabilities and feeding habits of flying reptiles.  Other pterosaurs such as Pteranodon may be more common in model collections, but it is great to see a replica of Dimorphodon included in the Wild Safari Dinos model range.

Stone Age Man Excavation Set Reviewed

Stone Age Man Excavation Kit Reviewed

The latest excavation kit has just been added to Everything Dinosaur’s range.  Time to excavate a trio of troglodytes with this new addition to the company’s educational excavation kits.  The “Stone Age Man Excavation Kit” consists of a plaster block in which three models of cavemen have to be found.  Digging tools and a handy magnifying glass are also included.  Most kits of this kind contain objects that once excavated can be put together to form a dinosaur skeleton, but in a twist, this dig kit has hidden cavemen for the young palaeontologist (or should that be young palaeoanthropologist) to excavate.

The picture above shows the packaging and the kit’s contents (large plaster block, digging tools including a brush and a magnifying glass).

Our testers put plenty of newspaper down to help minimise the debris left by the enthusiastic excavators, the block is sealed in a plastic cover and once this has been removed the digging tools can be used to chip and scrape away at the soft plaster until a figure is found.  The plaster is quite soft, but some parts are harder than others, fortunately, the wooden digging stick with its pick at one end and scraper at the other is more than capable of breaking up the plaster.

On of our testing teams commented that having a plastic tub close by into which some of the debris from the block could be put was helpful.  From time to time, the block was turned upside down over this tub to permit the bits that had been chipped away to be put straight into this tub before transfer to the bin.

Excavating and searching for the cavemen models was surprisingly therapeutic.  Mums and dads also joined in the hunt too.  The block is quite substantial and it took over an hour to expose the figures.  The children were excited and got very involved with the excavations, they loved scratching around with the digging tool, and brushing off the debris.

Digging out the Models

The picture shows one of the grown-ups helping out by picking away at a piece of plaster close to one of the bases of the cavemen figures.  It is a good idea to put newspaper down or as one tester suggested, to excavate the blocks outside.  Another tester recommended rolling up the children’s sleeves before starting, this ensured that cuffs did not get dusty.

A Part Finished Block with the Models Exposed

The models were easy to spot (pink models against an off-white coloured plaster), once spotted, a little bit of care and patience is required to complete the job of digging out the models.  Testers found that once they had located the figures, the block could be turned upside down and excavated from the other side down to where the models were located.  Each block contains three cavemen figures, the contents of the kits does vary and nobody was sure what cavemen they had got until the models had nearly been dug out.

Six Different Figures

A panel on the side of the box shows pictures of the six available figures, which proved to be extremely helpful when trying to identify the replicas and think of where to excavate next.  It took over two hours for the models to be excavated, but the time flew by and the children were so busy concentrating on the job in hand that they did not notice how long (or how quietly) they had been working.  As the plaster is quite brittle and pliable, the children could easy make progress and see where they had been digging.

There was little effort involved although we would recommend that this item is for children from 8 years and upwards.  However, younger children can certainly have a go and many of the Mums and Dads enjoyed helping out as supervisors and extra excavators for the slightly younger children.  The figures have spears and clubs in their hands so care is required to dig around these items, but once a figure is nearly exposed the relevant piece of block can be broken off and then placed in a small bowl of water to allow the last bits of plaster to be washed off.

It is inadvisable to pour the plaster remains down the sink, this could result in a blocked pipe, best thing to do was to use a paper towel to catch the bits of plaster and these could then be safely placed in the bin.

Models are Great for Creative Play

The models stand about 5 cm tall and they are great for creative, imaginative play.  The six models show Stone Age people in various poses, one making flint tools, one about to throw a boulder, whilst another depicts a person chipping away at some rock, rather in the same way that we chipped away at the plaster block as one young person pointed out.

This is an interesting and novel addition to the Everything Dinosaur dig kits range and is a great exercise, with the children using the same tools that real palaeontologists and archaeologists use when they are excavating specimens.

It was noted that this kit makes a super addition to a home educator’s set of resources and that project work could be undertaken around the subject of what palaeontologists/archaeologists do, what the Stone Age was like etc. using this excavation kit as a basis for the study.

Dino Soft Toy Dinosaurs – Colourful Soft Toys Designed for Young Palaeontologists

As far as we can tell, based on comparisons with the dinosaur’s closest living relatives – the birds and crocodiles, dinosaurs had excellent colour vision.  This means that in all probability colour was very important to this particular group of prehistoric animals and many dinosaurs as a result might have been very colourful indeed.  A new range of dinosaur soft toys has been added to Everything Dinosaur’s website and they certainly support this scientific thinking, young palaeontologists now have a scarlet Spinosaurus and a beautiful, blue Tyrannosaurus rex to play with.

Soft and cuddly dinosaurs, whatever next?  Joining the friendly Spinosaurus and his chum T. rex is a cute and camouflaged Stegosaurus soft toy.  It might be a good idea for the green and stripy Stegosaurus to be able to blend into its forest home habitat with two other big dinosaurs on the prowl.  These dinosaur soft toys did really well on test at Everything Dinosaur.

Their bright and cheery appearance went down well with both mums and dads and young dinosaur fans.  Best of all they come in two sizes with Dino babies (T. rex, Stegosaurus and Spinosaurus), having an overall length of approximately thirty centimetres or so.  The Large Dino soft toys measure around forty-eight centimetres or thereabouts, certainly big enough for budding young scientists to create their very on bedtime “Jurassic Park”.

Spinosaurus, Stegosaurus and T. rex

The bright red Spinosaurus has a purple, orange and white sail running along his back.  He may be the largest land living carnivore known to science but his super soft material makes him an ideal playmate for children from three years and upwards.  Yes, we know that Spinosaurus may actually have had three-fingered claws and not the two digits depicted here, but this bright and cheery dinosaur won us over.  After all,  no one has ever found the fossilised arm and hand bones of Spinosaurus (as far as we know).

The T. rex is a colourful character too.  Patterned with stripes and with light blue spines running down his back that match the colour of his flanks.  His underbelly is an off-white colour and we were informed by one young reviewer that Tyrannosaurus rex was rather ticklish on his tummy!

The Wonderful Wild Safari Dinos Gryposaurus Dinosaur Model Reviewed

By |2024-05-01T14:51:57+01:00September 15th, 2013|Categories: Everything Dinosaur Products, Product Reviews|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur Reviews Gryposaurus (Safari Ltd)

Included within the excellent Wild Safari Dinos and Prehistoric Life range is  this fascinating model of the hadrosaur known as Gryposaurus.  This dinosaur may have lacked the ostentatious head-gear of other duck billed dinosaurs, but a lot of fossil material has been ascribed to this genus and as such it represents an important member of the Late Cretaceous mega fauna of North America.

Gryposaurus

Gryposaurus is  known from numerous skulls, articulated specimens and even fossilised skin impressions.  In comparison to other duck-billed dinosaurs, such as the crested lambeosaurines, Gryposaurus had relatively longer and slimmer front legs.  The design team at Safari Ltd have been careful  to depict the slim forelimbs on their model.  This dinosaur very probably lived in herds and spent most of its time walking on all fours, adopting a bipedal stance only rarely, perhaps to flee from a marauding tyrannosaur.

Wild Safari Dinos Gryposaurus

The model is painted a beautiful, dusky blue, with a light tan underside and a beige coloured row of prominent scales running from behind the skull almost to the tip of the animal’s stiffened tail.  This dinosaur is posed in a quadrupedal stance with the tail, which makes up approximately half this animal’s length,  held out straight behind it.  The presence of ossified tendons in the fossil record supports the idea that the tails of these duck-billed dinosaurs were stiff and held off the ground.

The Gryposaurus genus was established in 1914 by the famous Canadian palaeontologist Lawrence Lambe after studying fossils found in Alberta, Canada.  A number of species of Gryposaurus are now recognised by palaeontologists, making this type of duck-billed dinosaur one of the most geographically widespread of all the Hadrosaurs known to science.

A “Roman Nose”

The most prominent feature of the skull, is the famous “Roman nose” that gives this dinosaur its name.  Gryposaurus means “hook-nosed lizard”.  This feature is formed by the highly arched nasal bones.  In some fossil specimens that team members at Everything Dinosaur have seen, the top part of the crest is roughened.  It has been speculated that soft tissues were connected to  these nasal bones, skin and cartilage forming a bulbous area that could be inflated as the animal breathed.  Once again, Safari Ltd are to be congratulated for the way in which this feature has been depicted on their replica.  We like the piercing blue eyes as well, an eye colouration not usually associated with dinosaur models.

Dinosaur with Blue Eyes – Wild Safari Dinos Gryposaurus

A Blue-eyed dinosaur.

A blue-eyed dinosaur.

What purpose this bulbous soft tissue served is unknown.  It could have  amplified the animal’s calls so perhaps it was used for auditory as well as visual communication amongst members of the herd.  The enlarged nasal passages could have been very well supplied with blood vessels so this “Roman nose” could have helped this dinosaur keep cool and otherwise regulate its body temperature.

Skin Impressions

Fossils of skin impressions of Gryposaurus have been found.  These show that this dinosaur was covered in many different types of scale  The model makers at Safari Ltd have obviously paid a lot of attention to the fossil material as they have ensured that their Gryposaurus replica reflects what is known about this dinosaur’s skin texture.

This well-made model measures approximately 22 centimetres in length, from its clearly defined beak to the tip of its blue painted tail.  Size estimates for this dinosaur do vary, but based on what is presumed to be fully grown adult specimens of Gryposaurus notabilis this replica is in 1:36 scale so it fits in well with other models in the Wild Safari Dinos and the Carnegie Collectibles model ranges.  This Gryposaurus dinosaur  model is an excellent addition to the Wild Safari Dinos range.  It is always a pleasure to see duck-billed dinosaurs included in a range of quality replicas.

We at Everything Dinosaur even provide a  fact sheet so that collectors can read all about this Late Cretaceous herbivore, where its fossils have been found, how big these dinosaurs were, their taxonomic affinities to other hadrosaurs and other fascinating facts.
