E-news from Everything Dinosaur

The latest e-news was sent out by Everything Dinosaur to its customer database and subscriber lists yesterday.  Call them “updates”, “shouts”, “bulletins” or whatever, we intend to send out a newsletter to our fans, customers and subscribers ever fourteen days.  So much is going on inside the company these days, a more frequent mailing might be more appropriate, but for the time being we will limit our mail shots to one every two weeks.   After all, we always respond to customer requests, emails and letters, so we are always doing our best to keep everyone up to date with developments.

Everything Dinosaur Newsletter

Our newsletters are being rolled out in response to increasing requests from customers and dinosaur fans in general to be kept informed regarding new models and other product developments at Everything Dinosaur.  The newsletter for March 1st featured information on the new for 2016 Safari Ltd dinosaur models, last minute support for grown-ups as they prepare for World Book Day, plus news of an exciting feathered dinosaur exhibition coming to the UK next year.

The newsletter also featured details about a super dinosaur notebook that has been added to our “back to school” range of products.  This is bound to get young dinosaur fans roaring with excitement.  It is great for school and it will, no doubt, encourage junior palaeontologists with their handwriting.  Details on the feathered dinosaur exhibition is provided along with news of prehistoric mammal model re-issues, (that glyptodont, the Wild Safari Prehistoric World Doedicurus, for example).

It’s not just dinosaurs at Everything Dinosaur, we stock prehistoric mammals too: Models of Prehistoric Mammals.

Like all of Everything Dinosaur’s commercial activities, subscribers to our newsletter have to opt in to receive the information.   The customer database is very well maintained and team members dedicate quite a considerable portion of their time to ensuring the data provided by customers is secure and up to date.

JurassicCollectables and Everything Dinosaur

One of the most exciting things about collecting dinosaur models is being able to swap views and feedback on the figures.  One of the best places out there to do this on the whole of the “world wide web” is the YouTube channel of JurassicCollectables.  How appropriate then, on the night of the Academy Awards (the Oscars), for Everything Dinosaur to announce that the UK-based mail order company has teamed up with the super talented film makers at JurassicCollectables!

Everything Dinosaur

Jurassic Collectables have operated a YouTube channel for the best part of seven years.  With over 46,000 subscribers and some 30.5 million views, this has certainly become the go to place for collectors and dinosaur fans to catch up on the latest prehistoric animal model introductions.  Take for example, the review of the new for 2016 Schleich Dilophosaurus model, one of the latest additions to our own Schleich product portfolio.  Great lighting, enables this replica to be shown off in all its glory and we love the attention to detail that the video reviewer shows, just like the attention to detail shown in the actual skin texture on the Dilophosaurus itself.

Commenting on the partnership with Everything Dinosaur, all round good guy JC commented:

“Jurassic Collectables YouTube channel is an on line video archive for all things Jurassic Park and Dinosaurs.  In the early 1990’s there was a palpable fascination with Dinosaurs that was realised through Spielberg’s ground breaking film.  Through a lens of Jurassic-nostalgia, the aim of the channel is to provide a friendly in depth look at all dinosaur products.  This is why Jurassic Collectables is honoured to be partnered with Everything Dinosaur, an on-line store they regularly call upon for the latest in Dinosaur figurines and merchandise.”

Now that’s an accolade for the hard-working team members at Everything Dinosaur, perhaps it’s time for us to take a curtain call!

Explaining the association between JurassicCollectables and Everything Dinosaur, a spokesperson for the company stated:

“Here at Everything Dinosaur, we really enjoy watching the amazing videos that JurassicCollectables produce.  We have been admirers for a long time and it is terrific to see such a dedicated channel.  We wholeheartedly endorse what they do and we recommend, if you have not done so already, subscribing.”

More Papo Dinosaur Word Mats for Schools

By |2023-04-13T18:20:40+01:00February 26th, 2016|Categories: Educational Activities, Main Page, Press Releases, Teaching|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur Creates More Papo Dinosaur Word Mats

The Papo dinosaur word mats featuring Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus rex have proved so popular with teachers that Everything Dinosaur has added a further two word mats to this free to download teaching resource.  The Papo Spinosaurus and the huge Papo Brachiosaurus now feature in this colourful word mat series, enthusing primary school children about dinosaurs and helping to increase their confidence with language and develop their vocabulary.

A New Addition to the Everything Dinosaur Papo Inspired Dinosaur Word Mats

These word mats, once downloaded from Everything Dinosaur’s dedicated schools website, can be laminated and then stuck on the classroom tables.  With six in the series there are plenty to go round.

To contact Everything Dinosaur about our free teaching resources: Email Everything Dinosaur.

Teaching Ideas

These dinosaur themed word mats can be used in lots of ways.  For example, if one is given to each table then the children can be encouraged to learn about their particular dinosaur, a great way to enthuse the class about carrying out independent research and independent learning.  Can the children find out facts about their very own dinosaur?  Can they make a science poster all about what they have discovered?  The word mats feature individual dinosaurs with various body parts labelled.

Teachers could blank out these labels and ask the children to provide the information themselves.  Perhaps, they might even be able to add a few new ones of their own.

Pronunciation Guide and Timeline

A pronunciation guide is incorporated into each word mat.  Great news for teachers and teaching assistants as this means no more struggling with difficult dinosaur names.  The geological periods that make up the “Age of the Dinosaurs” are also provided along with a handy timeline.  The silhouette of the dinosaur provides an indication as to when the dinosaur featured on the word mat lived.

The Papo Brachiosaurus Inspires Another Word Mat

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur stated:

“These word mats have certainly proved popular.  At the start of the second part of the Spring Term we have been handing out a set of word mats to all the classes that we have been working with.  We have also received numerous requests to email these resources out to schools as well as making them freely available on our dinosaurs for schools website.  The children seem to really enjoy using them and in a number of cases, within minutes of handing the mats over to the teaching team they have been laminated and stuck on the classroom tables ready to inspire the budding young palaeontologists.”

New Cute Dodo Soft Toy Available from Everything Dinosaur

Everything Dinosaur has added a cute and very cuddly Dodo soft toy to the company’s soft toy range.  Although not a dinosaur in the strictest sense, (would you believe an avian-dinosaur)?  The Dodo soft toy is a very welcome addition to the range of dinosaur and prehistoric animal soft toys.

A Soft Toy Dodo from Everything Dinosaur

Dodos and Dinosaurs

With its shiny black eyes, bright yellow beak and little wings, this soft toy Dodo is suitable for children from three years of age.  Even extinct animals need love to!  The soft toy Dodo stands an impressive thirty centimetres tall and it is made from very soft material indeed, one might even say that this is a super-soft, soft toy.

To view Everything Dinosaur’s range of prehistoric animal and dinosaur soft toys: Soft Toy Dinosaurs.

Getting to Grips with a Giant Pigeon

The Dodo, scientific name Raphus cucullatus was a member of the pigeon family.  Growing to the size of a turkey, it was the largest type of pigeon known.  Based on contemporary descriptions and notes from scientists who had the opportunity to study this bird before its extinction, the Dodo is described as being chubby with a rounded body covered in grey coloured feathers.  The head and beak were naked of feathers, the bill was large and the mouth could open surprisingly wide.  The legs and feet were yellow and this bird moved rather slowly and clumsily.  Contemporary reports suggest that this bird gave a loud squawk when alarmed.

Sadly, as any budding young palaeontologist will tell you, within a century or so of its discovery by Dutch sailors on the island of Mauritius, the Dodo was extinct.  The reason for its demise remains uncertain.  It had been thought that visitors to Mauritius had killed the bird for food, but there are numerous accounts of the bird’s flesh tasting “oily” and being very unpalatable.   More likely, rats, pigs and cats introduced to the island by European settlers devastated the Dodo population by destroying nests and eating young birds and eggs.

A Symbol of Extinction

In 1693, the French explorer and naturalist Francois Legaut visited the last known refuge of the Dodo on the East Indian island.  He found no trace of Dodos.  This comical-looking bird has become a symbol for extinction, hence the phrase “as dead as a dodo”.  The Dodo had died out in less than one hundred years after mankind encountered it.

We hope you like our Dodo soft toy, it is rather lovable!

Preparing for the New CollectA Models

Preparing for the New CollectA Models – Metriacanthosaurus et al

Team members at Everything Dinosaur are busy preparing for the arrival of the next set of new CollectA prehistoric animal models.  The new for 2016 replicas are due to arrive at the end of March, or possibly the first week of April.  We are expecting a number of new models, including the splendid Metriacanthosaurus (M. parkeri) model.

Everything Dinosaur (CollectA Metriacanthosaurus)

New CollectA Models

Metriacanthosaurus, pronounced met-tree-ah-can-tho-sore-us, is known from a single, fragmentary skeleton excavated from a site approximately one and a half miles north of the Dorset town of Weymouth (Jurassic Coast of southern England).  The holotype material is currently stored in the Oxford Museum of Natural History and team members at Everything Dinosaur have been researching and writing a fact sheet on this English prehistoric animal.  The exact locality of the fossil remains is debated, however, most palaeontologists assert that the fossils, which include two thigh bones, come from the clays located at Jordan Cliffs.

What is not debated, is the age of the material as one of the dorsal vertebrae associated with the specimen had the fossilised remains of an oyster attached to it (Gryphaea).  The species is diagnostic of the uppermost layer of the Oxford Clay Formation (Early Oxfordian faunal stage of the Jurassic).  The Gryphaea species associated with the fossilised remains of Metriacanthosaurus is Gryphaea dilatata.

As far as we at Everything Dinosaur are aware, Metriacanthosaurus is the only theropod currently recognised from the upper Oxford Clay Formation.  The name translates as “Parker’s moderately-spined lizard”, as the dorsal vertebrae possess relatively tall neural spines.  The species name honours the English 19th century anatomist and zoologist William Kitchen Parker who has been credited with the original fossil discovery.  Its classification within the Theropoda remains uncertain.

Megalosaurus parkeri

When originally named by the German palaeontologist Friedrich von Huene in 1923, it was called Megalosaurus parkeri.  However, in the late 1920s and early 1930s many German scientists were being heavily influenced by the work on North African dinosaurs by Ernst Stromer von Reichenbach.  The tall neural spines were reminiscent of the much more prominent spines found on the dorsal vertebrae of Spinosaurus (S. aegyptiacus), a dinosaur named by Stromer in 1915, whose fossils were being continuously studied.

No other member of the Megalosauridae had such large neural spines and so the genus assignment was questioned.  It was suggested that this English dinosaur should be associated with the spinosaurids.  In 1932, von Huene concluded that it should be placed within the genus Altispinax, which was known from Germany.  The problem was the fossil material from Weymouth represented an animal that lived at least 25 million  years before Altispinax.

It was not until the 1960s that a separate genus – Metriacanthosaurus was erected (Alick Walker, 1964), more recent studies have attempted to place this dinosaur more accurately within the phylogeny of the Theropoda.  Metriacanthosaurus has been placed within the sinraptorid clade.

If Metriacanthosaurus was a member of the Sinraptoridae family, then it would the first European member of this mostly Asian family of meat-eating dinosaurs to have been described.  The lack of cranial material makes positive identification at the taxonomic level difficult, the fossil material ascribed to this dinosaur consists of elements of the pelvis (a partial right ilium), vertebrae and elements of the hind limbs but the bones are severely cracked and distorted.

Exclusive Dinosaur Themed Word Mats for Schools

Everything Dinosaur Teams up with Papo to Help School Children

Thanks to all the dinosaur workshops delivered by Everything Dinosaur, the Cheshire based company has built up a strong reputation for their work in schools.  Indeed, over this half-term, Everything Dinosaur has logged up another twenty or so five star reviews from teachers on the dinosaurs for schools website.  One of the great advantages our staff have is that with their teaching knowledge combined with their dinosaur expertise, they can provide lots of advice to support the scheme of work that has been designed for each class.

Dinosaur Word Mats

Everything Dinosaur has teamed up with Papo to help enthuse and inspire the next generation of palaeontologists by using pictures of Papo model dinosaurs to create dinosaur themed word mats for use in schools.

In the EYFS and Key Stage 1 classes, the teaching team will be helping to develop communication and language skills.  The children will be encouraged to broaden their vocabulary, using different words and to gain a better understanding of their meaning and context.  Dinosaurs as a term topic, will certainly expose the children to a whole range of new words.  Given most children’s fascination with prehistoric animals, dinosaurs can help to inspire word usage as well as encouraging the children to read and write.

Dinosaur Themed Word Mats

For Reception classes, when it comes to literacy, the children will be starting to form their own sentences and to write, trying to include finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. The teaching team will continue to encourage the children to read and write using their phonic knowledge.   At Key Stage 1, children will have moved away from free flowing play activities into much more structured learning.  The school day will be more task-orientated with further progress in literacy and numeracy key components within the planned curriculum for the year.

Many schools adopt a term topic all about dinosaurs for Year 1 and Year 2.  Within this topic, the children will be expected to develop their fiction and non-fiction writing, using increasingly sophisticated language.

Helping to Develop Literacy

The teaching objectives for non-fiction writing involve developing a wider range of nouns and building upon a fascination with dinosaurs to encourage the use of adjectives.  Here the word mat features a single dinosaur, information about the diet of the dinosaur is provided along with a handy geological timeline to indicate when the dinosaur lived.

The picture above shows the Stegosaurus word mat.  It uses the Papo model Stegosaurus, as well as providing nouns, information about the diet of this armoured dinosaur and when it lived is given.  In total, five word mats have been developed, these can be downloaded from Everything Dinosaur’s school website for free.  These helpful word mats can be incorporated into wall displays, or laminated and stuck to the children’s work tables to help keep the focus on vocabulary extension.

Everything Dinosaur Comments

Commenting on the addition of a these Papo dinosaur inspired word mats to Everything Dinosaur’s range of teaching downloads, one of the teaching team stated:

“These colourful word mats will make a welcome addition to a teacher’s resources.  Many schools have to rely on materials provided by non-specialist educational companies who simply lack knowledge when it comes to the Dinosauria.  We have found numerous examples of word mats and other teaching aids with spelling mistakes and other inaccuracies.  With these examples, the teachers can be assured that they have been designed by people who combine a knowledge about prehistoric life with expertise in teaching.”

New Rebor “Punch and Judy” Dimorphodon Models Reviewed

Rebor “Punch and Judy” Dimorphodon Models Reviewed

The eagerly awaited Rebor Dimorphodon replicas are now in stock at Everything Dinosaur and what a splendid pterosaur diorama these figures make.  The Rebor “Punch and Judy” Dimorphodon models are in approximate 1:6 scale and represent a male and female of the species (D. macronyx).  The male, nick-named Punch, is depicted as sitting on a log and like “Judy”, the female, it is available separately, but Everything Dinosaur are also offering the two models as a set, as when joined together they really do make a spectacular addition to any model fan’s collection.

Rebor Dimorphodon Models

The diorama allows Rebor to explore the idea of sexual dimorphism in pterosaurs.  A number of fossils indicate that it was the males of the Pterosauria that were likely to possess more flamboyant crests and ornamentation than the females.  Although, the dimorphodontids lack cranial crests, Rebor has opted to give their male a more colourful snout and a bright red tail rudder.  These are in stark contrast to the female (Judy), which tends to have a more muted colour scheme overall.

Early Jurassic Pterosaur

Rebor are to be congratulated, they have depicted the deep skull, the dentition and robust limbs of this Early Jurassic pterosaur very effectively.  Intriguingly, the male is only just a fraction bigger than the female (eighteen centimetres compared to sixteen and a half centimetres).  The fossil record suggests that the males and females of the species (Dimorphodon macronyx), were generally similar in size.  This is in contrast to later pterosaurs, such as those that make up the genus Pteranodon.  In the pteranodontids, it is the males that are believed to have been much larger than the females.

For dinosaur models and other prehistoric animal figures: Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Models and Replicas.

The male is depicted as sitting on a log.  Clearly, Rebor have taken into consideration some of the more recent research into dimorphodonts.  It was once thought that these flying reptiles were the Mesozoic equivalent of Puffins and that they lived near the coast and dined on fish.

Studies into the teeth, jaw mechanics and the anatomy of these Raven-sized creatures indicate that they were in all likelihood insectivores and not particularly agile fliers.  They have been depicted as animals of the forests, grubbing around in the leaf litter for insects, larvae and other small animals.  The presence of a log for the male Dimorphodon to perch on pays homage to this idea that these flying reptiles were very much at home in woodlands.

Judy – The Flying Dimorphodon Figure

The female is supplied with a stiff metal rod, which measures twenty centimetres in length.  One end of this rod is inserted into a small hole in the chest of the model, the other end can be inserted into a discrete hole in the base.  This permits the collector to depict this pterosaur in a flight.  The overall height of the model is around twenty-two centimetres, no glue is required, we found that the rod held the female pterosaur model securely without the need to resort to a permanent fix.  Both models have articulated lower jaws and the paintwork and detailing around the jaws is particularly noteworthy.

Anatomical studies indicate that Dimorphodon was a relatively poor flier.  Wing morphology and loading suggests that this deep-skulled pterosaur would have had limited aerial manoeuvrability and may have been actually quite reluctant to take to the air.

Leading pterosaur expert, the very talented Mark P. Witton, has speculated that Dimorphodon was a Mesozoic equivalent of an extent Rail or a Grouse and that flight would have been quite strenuous, perhaps only taking to the air for very short flights – hops between trees for example.  The wingspan of the female (Judy) is twenty-four centimetres and at 1:6 scale this roughly approximates to the known fossil record (wingspan up to 1.5 metres).

The Pair of Rebor Dimorphodons (Punch and Judy)

Although very splendid replicas in their own right, the models really come into their own when united and displayed in a single diorama.  The log which the male sits on can be positioned onto the base that comes with Judy.  In fact, Rebor have engineered their models to ensure that there is a snug fit between this base and the log.  The female can be depicted flying over the male whilst he sits, perched as if in readiness to join her in flight, who knows, a courtship between these two beautiful model pterosaurs perhaps?

Superb Rebor Dimorphodon Models

Commenting on the addition of these models to the Rebor replica range, a spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“The two models work really well together and Rebor have obviously strived hard to provide a very effective pterosaur diorama.  It is great to see a flying reptile like Dimorphodon added to the Rebor range, Punch and Judy are very exciting additions to the Rebor product portfolio.”

There is certainly much to be admired from the latest Rebor introductions.  The base of Judy even comes with a little lizard figure.  Once the two models are united, this little reptile can be posed peeping out from underneath the log, as if it is hiding from the two dimorphodonts, just in case they decide to make a meal of him.

Well done Rebor!  Both models are very well made and together they make a fantastic pterosaur diorama.

Wild Safari Prehistoric World

Many dinosaur fans and model collectors have been emailing Everything Dinosaur expressing their excitement about the new dinosaur models coming out this year from Safari Ltd.  The Iguanodon, Carcharodontosaurus and the Masiakasaurus models are replicas that we too, are looking forward to getting in stock.  However, it is worth remembering that in addition to the new models, Safari Ltd will be bringing back some prehistoric mammals.  The giant sloth, the baby Woolly Mammoth, Amebelodon and the glyptodont Doedicurus figures will also be available later on this spring.

Everything Dinosaur Comments

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Bringing back some recently retired models makes a lot of sense for Safari Ltd.  With the retirement of the Carnegie Collectibles range of models, the Safari Ltd model stable has been depleted somewhat.  However, the re-introduction of some old favourites will help to boost the portfolio of replicas offered and also give collectors a chance to complete their model collections.  A new generation of model collectors can be exposed to these splendid prehistoric mammal models.”

It is great to see that the recently retired prehistoric animal models made by Safari Ltd are being re-introduced in the spring of 2016. Perhaps this will start a trend for Safari Ltd, whereby they introduce retired models in future years.  If this becomes a trend, this type of activity might be adopted by other manufacturers, could we see the return of the Papo Green T. rex figure, the Bullyland Iguanodon or even a Schleich Woolly Mammoth?
