Back-in-Stock Notifications Added to Everything Dinosaur’s Website

Customers can now be notified automatically when a product is back in stock at Everything Dinosaur. The award-winning dinosaur and prehistoric animal merchandise retailer has further enhanced its support for website visitors by adding, simple to use back-in-stock notifications to all its products. A waitlist facility has been added to the company website.

If a product is out of stock, then customers have the option to join a waitlist for this item, when it is back in stock, they will automatically receive an email letting them know that this item is available to purchase.

Simple to Use – Simple Steps to Follow

The system works like this:

Customer visits a product page on the Everything Dinosaur website and discovers that it is out of stock.
If that customer, who is an account holder, wants to know exactly when it is going to be available again – simple click the “join waitlist” link and if requested provide a contact email address.
When more of these items come into Everything Dinosaur’s website, as soon as the inventory is updated, an email will be sent alerting the customer that the item is back in stock.

When the customer gets the email alert, all they have to do is to click the handy product link included in the email and they will be directed to the product page on the Everything Dinosaur website.

We still offer all the other customer support options such as the ability to contact a team member directly on the website via our chat facility, this new function provides additional support. Customers Can Easily Review and Edit Their Own Waiting Lists

Shoppers that have created an account at Everything Dinosaur can easily review and edit their own waitlists. Once logged into to their personal account pages, a customer can click on the “Your Waitlists” link in the left margin of the account dashboard and simply edit the product waitlist information in just a few taps of the keyboard, or mouse clicks.

Dinosaurs Go Courting

Little is known about the courtship and mating habits of non-avian dinosaurs, after all such behaviours are difficult to interpret from the fossil record, but some insight might be gained by studying the behaviour of avian dinosaurs – the birds. Some birds engage in very elaborate and sophisticated courtship displays.

In August 2016, Everything Dinosaur published a blog post about a remarkable piece of research, scientists from Poland, the USA, China and South Korea has studied Late Cretaceous dinosaur trace fossils and some of these impressions were interpreted as representing nest scrape displays, as seen in living birds.

A Short Video of the Schleich Diabloceratops Model

Everything Dinosaur have posted up a short video previewing the new for 2019 Schleich Diabloceratops dinosaur model. This video is more of a teaser for fans of prehistoric animals and dinosaur model collectors. In the video, we confirm the length of this figure (it is approximately sixteen centimetres long and those impressive horns are approximately eleven centimetres off the ground).

One of Four New Prehistoric Animal Models from Schleich in July 2019

The Schleich Diabloceratops will be replacing the recently retired Schleich Styracosaurus and the beautiful Pentaceratops figure. It will be one of four new prehistoric animal models from Schleich due to arrive at Everything Dinosaur’s warehouse in July (2019). The other figures are:

Schleich Dracorex – a model of the “dome-headed” dinosaur Dracorex hogwartsia. The Schleich Dracorex measures nineteen centimetres long and the head height is around ten centimetres.
The Schleich juvenile Giganotosaurus – this figure has an articulated lower jaw and it measures around twenty-six centimetres in length and stands over ten centimetres high.
Schleich Plesiosaurus – this marine reptile has a poseable neck and it is approximately sixteen centimetres long.

“The Schleich Diabloceratops model has certainly been getting a lot of attention. Within the Schleich range of large dinosaur models, there is one chasmosaurine (Triceratops) and one centrosaurine which is the new Diabloceratops. The two great tribes of Late Cretaceous horned dinosaurs are now represented by Schleich figures once again. Diabloceratops may have been very distantly related to Triceratops, but they would never have met. Diabloceratops lived millions of years before Triceratops evolved.”

A Preview of the New for 2019 Schleich Plesiosaurus Model

Schleich will be introducing four new prehistoric animal models in July 2019. Today, we take a brief look at the only non-dinosaur figure to come out with this batch of replicas, the Schleich Plesiosaurus. It had been rumoured that the German-based model manufacturer intended to produce a plesiosaur and thanks to Everything Dinosaur, we can now post up a quick video preview of this model that will be in stock in the summer.

Four New Schleich Models

The four new Schleich prehistoric animal models scheduled to be released in July (2019) are as follows:

A juvenile Giganotosaurus.
A Dracorex.
The horned dinosaur Diabloceratops.
A Plesiosaurus (marine reptile).

Praising the Schleich Plesiosaurus

In the short video preview, a spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur comments on the unusual colouration on the top of the head of this figure, the dark blue markings have been described as looking like “goggles”, quite appropriate for an animal that spent much of its time under water. It can be speculated that these reptiles had good colour vision and their heads may have played a role in visual communication. Crests or horns on the head would have affected streamlining so such ornamentation is not known in the Plesiosauria, so perhaps subtle markings on the head could have helped signal the maturity of the animal and its fitness for breeding.

A Plesiosaur Colour Scheme

The overall colouration of the plesiosaur model is also discussed. The model is coloured a sky blue with flecks of white on the broad back. This combines well with a paler underside which represents countershading, a concept long linked with extinct marine reptiles and seen in many marine mammals today. The narrator in the video reflects on the fact that the colour scheme reminds him of polar conditions and states that as fossils of plesiosaurs have been found in high latitudes, such a colour scheme is appropriate as these reptiles are now known to have lived in cold waters.

A Model with a Flexible Neck

As with a number of earlier plesiosaur figures, the Schleich Plesiosaurus has a flexible neck. This permits the neck to be placed in a variety of poses. When tested the neck is quite stiff and this allows the figure to remain in the pose chosen without the head drooping down. The Schleich Plesiosaurus will be in stock along with the three other figures (Dracorex, Diabloceratops and the juvenile Giganotosaurus), in July (2019).

Schleich Animantarx Model Reviewed by JurassicCollectables

The latest video to be produced by those creative people at JurassicCollectables features one of the new for 2019 Schleich prehistoric animal figures – the Schleich Animantarx. The Animantarx is described as adorable and as it represents an armoured dinosaur that grew to a length of approximately three metres. The model works well in scale with JurassicCollectables regular “off-colour Alan”, who makes an appearance towards the end of the review.

An Adorable Schleich Animantarx

The narrator describes this model as an “adorable Animantarx” and it certainly has an appeal. The figure is nicely proportioned and the wet-looking gloss added to the black eyes provides this replica with a certain charm. It is described as “a cute looking dinosaur” and it is hard to disagree.

Animantarx

The narrator correctly points out that this member of the Nodosauridae family was named and described relatively recently (1999). It is known from very fragmentary fossils, including a partial skull and a piece of fossilised jaw. This dinosaur had a distinctive domed skull and tiny horns behind the eyes. Features that can be seen in the close-up view of the head in the picture above. It is this attention to detail that elevates this armoured dinosaur model. Clearly, the Schleich design team have worked hard to produce a model that reflect scientific understanding.

The model may have flaws, but as the narrator points out, there is much to be admired when it comes to examining the dermal armour, the skin tones and the detailing of the body scales.

Comparing Schleich Prehistoric Animal Models

Everything Dinosaur will be Stocking the New for 2019 Papo Spinosaurus

The new for 2019 Papo Spinosaurus dinosaur model will be available to buy from Everything Dinosaur in the summer of 2019. This awesome prehistoric animal model was revealed last week by the French manufacturer and this large dinosaur figure has already garnered a great number of positive comments given that it depicts Spinosaurus as a semi-aquatic quadruped, an ecological niche advocated in a ground-breaking scientific paper published on Spinosaurus aegyptiacus back in 2014. The new Papo Spinosaurus model will be coming into stock in June.

A Secret Papo Project

The Spinosaurus has been kept under wraps by the senior management team at Papo, not even staff members at the company knew about the model’s existence until it was revealed at an exhibition last week. One of Papo’s best-selling dinosaur models of all time is their original Spinosaurus figure, but this model depicted this Late Cretaceous North African theropod as a biped, many palaeontologists now believe that Spinosaurus was a specialised piscivore (fish-eater), that moved around on all fours and spent much of its time in rivers and lakes.

Preparing to Introduce a New Oviraptorid

As Everything Dinosaur team members prepare to write about the formal scientific description of a new species of oviraptorid from the Late Cretaceous of southern Mongolia, we have been brushing up on our knowledge of the Oviraptorosauria clade.

An Unusual Branch of the Maniraptora

The Oviraptorosauria clade is an atypical branch of the maniraptoran theropods. They are characterised by short, deep skulls, jaws which lack teeth (edentulous in derived, advanced members of the clade), short, stunted tails and tail bones with lots of air sacs within them (pneumatised proximal caudal vertebrae). The first of these dinosaurs were formally named and described in the 1920s (Oviraptor and Chirostenotes), over the last three decades, numerous new members of this clade have been identified, mostly from Upper Cretaceous strata.

The oviraptorosaurs are likely to have originated in Asia. The earliest fossil record of these dinosaurs is reported from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of China. It is likely that these dinosaurs were feathered and most of them were relatively small and light-weight. However, there were exceptions to this rule, such as the huge Gigantoraptor (Gigantoraptor erlianensis), that stood nearly as tall as a giraffe. Gigantoraptor was named and described in 2007: New Giant Chinese Dinosaur Described.

Three Families within the Oviraptorosauria

Palaeontologists consider the Oviraptorosauria to be a very diverse clade with numerous taxa, but it can be broadly classified into three distinct families:

The Avimimidae – which for the moment contains a single genus (Avimimus), with two species from the Nemegt Formation of Mongolia. Although the provenance of the first fossils associated with this genus is not clear.
The Caenagnathidae – which are known from North America and Asia with numerous genera including the giant Gigantoraptor erlianensis.
The Oviraptoridae – which are only known from Asia, although there are more genera recognised than within the more geographically widespread caenagnathids.

Of these three dinosaur families, it can be argued that the Oviraptoridae are the best understood. Many genera are known from nearly complete fossil skeletons, whilst in the case of most caenagnathids, these dinosaurs are mostly known from highly fragmentary and far from complete material.

We look forward to publishing an article in the very near future describing a new member of the Oviraptoridae from the famous Upper Cretaceous deposits of the Nemegt Formation of Mongolia.

Everything Dinosaur team members are preparing for the arrival in the next few weeks or so of the CollectA Supreme Deluxe Caiuajara pterosaur model. This beautiful and most impressive figure of a Cretaceous flying reptile from Brazil is going to be one of the first of the new for 2019 CollectA figures that arrive in our warehouse. As part of our preparations, team members have been busy researching and writing a fact sheet all about this weird and wonderful member of the Pterosauria.

A CollectA Speciality (CollectA Caiuajara)

Large replicas of pterosaurs are becoming a bit of a CollectA speciality. When stocks of this 2019 figure arrive at our warehouse, it will be joining two other CollectA Supreme Deluxe pterosaur models. CollectA introduced a 1:4 scale replica of a Chinese member of the Ornithocheiridae family – Guidraco back in 2015. This was followed in 2017 by the award winning CollectA Supreme Deluxe Dimorphodon model. All three models will have moveable, articulated jaws.

Pronouncing Caiuajara

When this pterosaur was formally named and described back in 2014, it caused quite a sensation amongst palaeontologists who specialise in studying the Pterosauria. It is quite usual to have just a few fragments of bone to study, but in this case, the fossilised remains of more than forty individuals were recovered from a dig site in south-eastern Brazil.

This flying reptile had a remarkable crest, shaped a bit like the wing of a butterfly. The fossil site was interpreted as a stop-over location as these animals migrated. They were very competent flyers travelling great distances, so it is appropriate that the new for 2019 Caiuajara figure is travelling a great distance from the factory to our UK warehouse.

The fact sheet we are going to produce will also include a guide to pronunciation. The genus name of this pterosaur is pronounced “Kay-you-ah-jar-rah”. Eofauna Giganotosaurus with an Articulated Jaw

One of the great things about supplying dinosaur models and prehistoric animal figures to collectors all around the world, is that we get to examine the models in our warehouse before they get allocated space on the shelves in readiness for being purchased and dispatched. When a shipment of new models arrives, there is a lot of excitement around the office and whilst unpacking all the cases, we have the opportunity to examine up close and in detail the latest editions to Everything Dinosaur’s product portfolio.

This week has seen the arrival of the eagerly anticipated Eofauna Scientific Research Giganotosaurus model in 1:35 scale. The model is beautifully detailed and we thought it fitting to make a short video of the articulated jaw, after all, the size estimate for this meat-eating dinosaur of around 13-14 metres in length was based on the discovery of some super-sized Giganotosaurus teeth.

Fifty New Prehistoric Animal Models Coming to Everything Dinosaur in 2019

At the beginning of the year, we predicted that we would be adding approximately fifty new models to our already extensive range. That’s just about one new model every week. To read about our palaeontology crystal ball gazing and other predictions for 2019: Our Predictions for the Forthcoming Year.

The Eofauna Giganotosaurus is the first dinosaur model to be created by this talented company. We knew about the introduction of this theropod many months ago, when we met up with the senior management team of Eofauna Scientific Research, we even helped with the production of the text that accompanies this beautifully-crafted dinosaur model.

We have added this figure to our own prehistoric animal model collection (we already have the two prehistoric elephants – the Steppe Mammoth and the Straight-tusked Elephant), we chose to create a short video just to demonstrate the skilfully sculpted skull and to highlight the model’s articulated jaw.

A New Borealopelta Scale Drawing

Borealopelta markmitchelli Fact Sheet Preparations

In a few weeks’ time, the first of the 2019 CollectA prehistoric animal models will be coming into stock at Everything Dinosaur. One of the first figures expected to arrive is the Age of Dinosaurs Borealopelta figure, a fifteen centimetre long replica of a nodosaurid that roamed north-western Alberta around 112 million years ago. The fact sheet for this new dinosaur model is being prepared and a scale drawing of Borealopelta (B. markmitchelli) has been produced.

Heavily Armoured with Countershading

The exquisite state of preservation has permitted palaeontologists to gain a great deal of information about the position of the osteoderms and scutes that covered the dinosaur’s body. When the scientific paper providing the formal description of Borealopelta was published in 2017, the research team described how chemical analysis of organic compounds in the armour and skin permitted the research team to infer the armoured dinosaur’s pigmentation.

It was discovered that Borealopelta possessed countershading, with a reddish-brown top half contrasting with a much paler underside. In extant animals, countershading helps to provide camouflage against predators, but most large animals today, such as rhinos, elephants and hippos, don’t have countershading.

At more than five metres long and with such strong armour, it seems surprising that this armoured dinosaur would evolve countershading to help it avoid detection. Such a large and powerfully built dinosaur would have presented a formidable opponent for most theropod dinosaurs, but apparently it paid Borealopelta to try to maintain a low profile.

It is not known what sort of meat-eating dinosaurs Borealopelta tried to hide from but three-toed prints, some measuring in excess of 90 cm long and ascribed to the ichnogenus Irenesauripis indicate that they may have been some 12-metre-plus carnivores in the ecosystem that were best avoided.

What Sort of Giant Theropods?

As to what sort of theropods could have predated Borealopelta, we can only speculate. However, it has been postulated that the super-sized carnivores that Borealopelta was trying to avoid were probably carcharodontosaurids or allosaurids. This armoured dinosaur is estimated to have weighed more than 1.3 Tonnes, it is much larger than animals alive today that have evolved countershading, therefore, the assumption is that there must have been super-sized, hypercarnivores that Borealopelta was trying to avoid.
