The New Rebor Ankylosaurus “War Pig”

Rebor Ankylosaurus “War Pig”

The Rebor Ankylosaurus model “War Pig” is coming into stock at Everything Dinosaur.  Available in three colour variations – Plain, Woodland and Mountain, this 1:35 scale model of Ankylosaurus magniventris is the latest addition to the Rebor scale model range.  This beautifully designed armoured dinosaur figure is due to arrive in about four weeks, team members at Everything Dinosaur expect to have stocks in their warehouse by early June.

Rebor Ankylosaurus – Mountain, Plain and Woodland

Ankylosaurus magniventris is regarded as the largest of the Ankylosauridae and although it has had a family of armoured dinosaurs named after it, palaeontologists now think that this Late Cretaceous armoured giant was not typical of the ankylosaur family.  Ankylosaurus is known from only fragmentary remains found in the USA and Canada and its tail club was more rounded in shape when compared to other closely related ankylosaurs, an anatomical feature picked up on by the designers at Rebor.  The tail bones (caudal vertebrae), are distinct with “u” shaped neural spines, a feature unique to A. magniventris, hence the relatively broad, wide tail on the Rebor figure.

The Rebor Ankylosaurus “War Pig” Plain

Why Three Different Rebor Ankylosaurus Versions?

Intriguingly, despite Ankylosaurus being very well-known by the public and a veteran of numerous dinosaur films, palaeontologists regard it as ecologically rare in ancient Late Cretaceous palaeoenvironments.

Compared to the coeval nodosaurid Edmontonia, A. magniventris fossils are much less frequently found, this and differences in the shape of the jaw indicate that these two armoured dinosaurs may have inhabited different habitats and specialised in eating different types of vegetation.  Edmontonia fossils are associated with lowland, fluvial deposits, and the paucity of Ankylosaurus fossil material suggests that this dinosaur was a very infrequent visitor to the floodplains, so where did Ankylosaurus live?

The truth is we don’t know, hence the reason for three different colour variants of Ankylosaurus being introduced by Rebor.  Ankylosaurus may have inhabited upland areas, hence the “mountain” version.  It could have been at home in forested areas, hence the stunning “woodland” model, or equally, it could have been an animal of the open plains, hence the amazing “plain”.

Three Beautiful Versions of Ankylosaurus – Where Do You Think It Lived?

Articulated Armoured Dinosaurs

The models have articulated lower jaws, the heads can be rotated and the tails have a metal rod inserted in them that allows the awesome tail club to be put into different positions.  As with all the Rebor replicas, these 1:35 scale figures have been beautifully painted and all three are fantastic additions to the Rebor range.  The models measure 29.5 cm in length and when this is scaled up it puts the Ankylosaurus replicas into the ball park size range stated by the recent (2017) scientific paper.

Wild Safari Prehistoric World Kronosaurus Makeover

By |2023-10-13T08:46:59+01:00May 7th, 2018|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

A Beautiful Kronosaurus Model Display

In 2017, the American-based, award-winning model manufacturer Safari Ltd introduced two marine reptiles into their “Wild Safari Prehistoric World” range of prehistoric animal figures.  The smaller of these two models, was the Plesiosuchus, (Plee-see-oh-sook-us), a detailed replica of a marine crocodile, a member of the Metriorhynchidae and as such, distantly related to today’s crocodiles.  The second of the marine reptiles, was a depiction of a giant predator, a pliosaur, an animal that has, very fortunately, no modern descendants – Kronosaurus.  Talented model maker and designer Martin Garratt has customised the Wild Safari Prehistoric World Kronosaurus figure and produced a stunning display piece.

The Marine Reptile Kronosaurus

Kronosaurus (Kroe-noe-sore-us), is best known from fossils discovered in Australia, although other remains assigned to this genus have been found in South America.  Estimated to have reached lengths in excess of nine metres, Kronosaurus was an apex predator of marine environments during the Early Cretaceous.

Its jaws were huge and although mistaken for an ichthyosaur when first studied, it was correctly identified as a member of the Pliosauridae in 1924.  Safari Ltd introduced a large Kronosaurus figure into their scale model series “Carnegie Collectibles”, some years ago and when this range was retired, it was not long before a Kronosaurus model was added to the company’s Wild Safari Prehistoric World range.

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Kronosaurus

Kronosaurus Diorama

The beautifully detailed figures in the Wild Safari Prehistoric World range provide model makers and sculptors with plenty of scope when it comes to designing unique dioramas.  In Martin’s display piece, the Kronosaurus has been carefully attached to a rock which acts as a stand for the figure.  This permits the model to be depicted in a dramatic pose, as if this ferocious predator is swimming rapidly upwards to attack prey from underneath.  This predation strategy is observed in many pelagic marine predators today, such as the Great White Shark (C. carcharias).  Indeed, the countershading on the original Safari Ltd Kronosaurus and modified by Martin in his model, is typical of underwater ambush predators.

Martin has chosen a more muted colour scheme with dark bands, running across the back and down the flanks.  Note also, that he has added a stabilising, diamond-shaped tail rudder, a feature not preserved in the fossil record for a pliosaur, as far as we at Everything Dinosaur are aware, but since the tail was mainly used for steering (the four, large flippers provided propulsion), the addition of this rudder makes anatomical sense.

Amazing Detail

Martin’s diorama shows some amazing detail and we really admire those little flourishes such as the large sea shell at the base of the beautifully crafted rock and the evidence of sea weed.  The teeth have been recoloured to give them a more realistic and weathered look.  The underbelly is an off-white colour and blends seamlessly into the muted blues and subtle greys of the countershading.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur stated:

“The quality of the Safari Ltd prehistoric animal replicas gives model makers a head start when it comes to creating their own unique dioramas.  Martin has done a fantastic job on customising this Kronosaurus model to create a museum quality display.”

New Rebor Chickenosaurus is in Stock

By |2024-05-10T21:17:49+01:00May 5th, 2018|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

Rebor Chickenosaurus Figure is in Stock at Everything Dinosaur

The latest figure in the Rebor Oddities range has arrived and what a fascinating replica it is.  The Rebor Chickenosaurus represents a genetically modified dinosaur embryo, the beautifully crafted figure is presented in a clear, egg-shaped display piece complete with a light-up base.

The Latest Addition to the Rebor Oddities Range – Rebor Chickenosaurus Genetically Engineered Dinosaur Embryo

The Rebor Chickenosaurus – A Genetically Engineered Dinosaur

Rebor has built a deserved reputation for developing innovative prehistoric animal figures and replicas and their Chickenosaurus is a welcome addition to the growing Rebor product portfolio.  The model itself, measures around nine centimetres long and when stood on its bespoke display base the figure stands about twelve centimetres high.  The detail on the embryo is amazing, it’s as if the shell of a dinosaur egg has been peeled away and you are able to observe the growing dinosaur baby.

A Fantastic Collectors’ Item – The Rebor Chickenosaurus Dinosaur Embryo

At home amongst the curiosities, the Rebor Chickenosaurus dinosaur figure.

To view the Rebor Chickenosaurus, which is currently available with a free Rebor Utahraptor replica (Wind Hunter) 3-D lenticular poster (whilst stocks last), simply visit the Rebor product section of Everything Dinosaur’s website: Rebor Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animal Models.

Chickens are Dinosaurs

With most palaeontologists classifying the Dinosauria into two main groups, the avian dinosaurs (Aves – birds) and the non-avian dinosaurs, the extinct branch of the Dinosauria consisting of the likes of Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Allosaurus, Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus rex, it is technically correct to refer birds such as chickens as dinosaurs.

This new Rebor figure celebrates the link between dinosaurs and birds and provides collectors with an opportunity to add something unusual and novel to their model collection.  The figure also pays homage to the “Jurassic Park/Jurassic World” movies and to the Michael Crichton novel that the first film, in this hugely successful franchise, was based upon.  Genetically engineered dinosaurs are certainly in vogue with movie goers, although scientists are a long way from actually being able to recreate a living, breathing dinosaur by manipulating avian genes.

To read an article from 2009, that outlines the use of chicken embryos in a study that involves manipulation of genes to awaken dormant dinosaur traits in birds: The “Dino-chicken Project”.

A Baby Dinosaur in the Egg

As Large as a Swan’s Egg

Measuring a fraction under twelve centimetres when the figure is placed on its light-up base, the egg is roughly the size of a Mute swan’s egg and it makes a fascinating display piece.  We have heard of one customer of Everything Dinosaur who was going to use the figure as a centre piece for a table display for a lunchtime service.  We hope that eggs and chicken are on the menu.

A Centrepiece in Many Collections

Rebor Chickenosaurus – A Special Promotional Offer

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“This is a novel dinosaur figure.  The “Oddities” range gives Rebor a licence to produce innovative and eye-catching figures, lots of manufacturers produce models of Theropod dinosaurs, but a figure of a theropod dinosaur embryo with its own light-up base is a first, as far as we are aware.  Whilst model dioramas such as the Rebor King T. rex and the Rebor Fallen Queen depict death, this beautifully designed item depicts life.”

Everything Dinosaur will be providing an amazing three-dimensional lenticular poster of the Rebor Utahraptor replica (Wind Hunter) with every Chickenosaurus.  The lenticular poster will be sent out free with every purchase of the Rebor Chickenosaurus.  This special promotional offer will be available until stocks last.

Model Retirements Announced in Everything Dinosaur’s Newsletter

In a meeting with the senior management of Safari Ltd a few months ago, Everything Dinosaur was informed that the model making company was going to slim down its inventory.   Three models have been retired, the Edmontosaurus, Inostrancevia and the Nigersaurus, expect more retirements to be announced by Everything Dinosaur in the near future.  Also, rumoured to be consigned to extinction, is the Battat Terra Amargasaurus figure, this sauropod dinosaur model, is believed to be out of production.

Safari Ltd Retirements

The model of the gorgonopsid Inostrancevia, part of the Wild Safari Prehistoric World model range was introduced along with the Edmontosaurus back in 2011.  It is a shame to see these three figures out of production, but we can expect to hear of new model introductions to this award-winning range in the autumn.

Battat Terra Amargasaurus

Rumours abound about the retirement of the Amargasaurus dinosaur model from the Battat Terra range.  It is proving very difficult to find stocks, however, model collectors and dinosaur fans can rest assured, Everything Dinosaur has plenty of stock of this figure that is believed to have been withdrawn from production.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“One of the benefits of subscribing to our newsletter is that you can find out about model retirements and figures going out of production before most other collectors.  This enables dinosaur fans who have subscribed to complete their model collections.”

Giant Squid Soft Toys and New Papo Models

One of our more unusual soft toys features in the May newsletter, the cute and cuddly giant squid soft toy.  This colourful plush cephalopod measures over eighty centimetres long from the tips of the tentacles to its rear end.  We also had to mark the arrival of the first for 2018 Papo figures by giving the Papo cave man with spear, the Papo young Spinosaurus and the Papo Amargasaurus a mention.

Wild Safari Prehistoric World Feathered T. rex Wins Award

Accolade for Wild Safari Prehistoric World Feathered T. rex

Readers of Prehistoric Times magazine have voted the Wild Safari Prehistoric World Feathered T. rex model the best dinosaur toy of 2017.   The figure faced tough competition, but it had a number of factors in its favour.  Firstly, it is a model of a Tyrannosaurus rex, the most popular of all the prehistoric animals and secondly, this skilfully crafted replica depicted T. rex with a shaggy coat of feathers, a modern interpretation of this iconic dinosaur.

A Feathered Tyrannosaurus rex Figure

Standing a little under fifteen centimetres high and measuring an impressive 32 centimetres long, this Tyrannosaurus rex figure depicts the “Tyrant Lizard King” with a coat of reddish-brown protofeathers, with more prominent quills on the top of the formidable skull and the running down the back of the neck.  The feathers on the back of the head and neck suggest that these quills might have played a role in visual display, the body feathers as shown in this replica, would have made a very effective coat, helping to keep this reptile warm.

The designers at Safari Ltd chose to make the snout and the underside of the neck bare, a similar characteristic is seen in extant vultures.  Many species of vultures such as the Lappet-faced (Torgos tracheliotos) and the White Rumped vulture (Gyps bengalensis) have heads and necks which are devoid of feathers.  A mistake often made, is to assume that this lack of feathers on the neck and head prevents the bird from getting caked in blood as it reaches inside carcasses to feed.

This adaptation may assist in helping the vulture to keep clean, but it is now known that the bare head and neck play a role in thermo-regulation, helping the bird to cool down.  Perhaps the design team at Safari Ltd had considered this research before finalising the feathery features on their 2017 dinosaur model.

Attention to Detail

It is the attention to detail that impresses.  This product line has a deserved reputation for the excellent painting of models, but it is the fine details that really make the feathered T. rex figure stand out from the pack.  Take, for example, the scratches and scars on the muzzle of the dinosaur model.  Face biting amongst Tyrannosaurs has long been suspected and the sculptors at Safari Ltd were keen to incorporate evidence of this behaviour into this T. rex model.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur stated:

“We congratulate Safari Ltd for winning the Prehistoric Times best dinosaur model of the year award for three years running.  Given the fantastic quality of prehistoric animal replicas available at the moment winning this hat-trick is some achievement.  The feathered T. rex model is truly spectacular and a worthy winner.”

Helping Children with their Counting and Sorting

Our mini dinosaur and prehistoric animal models have proved very effective teaching aids in school.  The mini dinosaur models are used to help children get to grips with numbers and these bright and colourful figures help inspire and motivate many young children as they make super counters and props for use in counting exercises.

The variety of the figures in a box of 96 provides plenty of opportunities for sorting these little models into different groups.  For example, we have used them to help sort out all the red coloured models into one group, all the yellow coloured models into another.  In addition, we have seen children differentiate and sort the models according to how many legs the animal walks on (two legs or four).

As an extension for more capable learners linked to the Key Stage 1 curriculum is to challenge pupils to sort the figures into meat-eaters and plant-eaters, linking the counting game to an element of the national curriculum that explores simple food chains and food webs.

Tactile Models – Great for Kinaesthetic Learning

Merci Pour Le Triceratops! A Beautiful Dinosaur Model

By |2024-05-10T18:39:11+01:00April 11th, 2018|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

Thanks for the Triceratops Photographs

At Everything Dinosaur, we really enjoy viewing the model collections of dinosaur fans.  It is great to see what collectors and figure enthusiasts have made of their purchases and we get lots of pictures sent into us highlighting dinosaur displays, prehistoric animal dioramas and completed model kits.  Recently, we received some photographs from a talented model maker who had just finished a Pegasus Hobbies Triceratops model kit and what a fantastic replica he has created.

The Completed Pegasus Triceratops Model

The Pegasus Hobbies Triceratops – A Beautiful Horned Dinosaur Model

The Pegasus Hobbies Triceratops is one of trio of dinosaur model kits currently available from this manufacturer.  The kit consists of a solid PVC Triceratops dinosaur in several constituent parts, a detailed display base and a name plate.  Model fans and collectors have a wonderful 1:24 scale Triceratops figure to assemble and paint.  As the glue and paints are not included in the kits, the model maker has complete freedom to decide what colour scheme they would like.  The very talented collector who sent in these pictures to Everything Dinosaur, has chosen to emphasise the subtle scales on the flank and to highlight the epocipitals on that awesome-looking head shield.

Thank You for Sending in the Triceratops Photographs

Painting the Toes of Triceratops

The finished model shows lots and lots of detail.  The skull and the open mouth have been painted with considerable skill and care.  Note how even the individual digits and toes have been painted, there is certainly a lot to admire in this completed replica.  The weathered look to those huge brow horns and the delicate brushwork that has enabled them to fit seamlessly into their bony sockets is particularly impressive.  This is a wonderful example of the dinosaur model maker’s art.

Pegasus Hobbies Triceratops Box Art

The box art for this kit (shown above), depicts this horned dinosaur in a forest environment, but this model maker has chosen to paint the display base a sandy colour.  Perhaps the Triceratops lived in an arid environment, or maybe the display base depicts the shore of a lake or a river bank.  Could the Triceratops be at the seaside?  Ironically, numerous Triceratops fossil specimens have been found in association with ancient coastal habitats.

Taking Photographs of the Rebor Ceratosaurus (Savage)

Rebor Ceratosaurus 1:35 Scale Replica Poses for the Camera

A figure collector contacted Everything Dinosaur and asked us to select a Rebor Ceratosaurus dinosaur model for him.  However, before placing his order, he requested that we send some photographs of the model.  We are always happy to oblige fellow collectors and dinosaur model enthusiasts, so we quickly despatched some images via email so that the buyer could peruse his potential purchase.

The Rebor 1:35 Scale Model of Ceratosaurus (C. dentisulcatus)

The Rebor Ceratosaurus Figure (Savage)

Measuring around 27 centimetres in length and standing an impressive 10. 5 centimetres high when posed on its detailed base, the Rebor Ceratosaurus is a most attractive figure.  It comes with its own polystone base, with a puddle effect and small tree stump.  The base itself, measures around 14 centimetres long.

The dinosaur is depicted in a very dynamic pose, almost as if it is sprinting.  Although, a sizeable predator, the robust Ceratosaurus dentisulcatus shared its environment with some even larger theropods, such as Saurophaganax and Allosaurus.  The detail on the model is fantastic, from the characteristic nose horn and the prominent bony growths over the eyes, down to the scales running along the back to the end of that powerful tail.   The Rebor 1:35 scale Ceratosaurus has proved to be extremely popular with avid collectors of prehistoric animal models and figures.

In the close-up view of the head and jaws, the beautiful detail of the hornlets over the eyes can be seen along with that prominent nasal horn.  The Rebor sculpt shows the large jaws and blade-like teeth associated with the Ceratosaurus genus.

Several Species of Ceratosaurus Have Been Described

Although associated mostly with Upper Jurassic deposits, fragmentary fossils from Argentina that are associated with the Aptian faunal stage, indicate that these predators survived into the Early Cretaceous.  Several species of  Ceratosaurus have been described from Morrison Formation fossils, although fossil finds suggest that this dinosaur was geographically widespread.  Ceratosaurus material has been found in Portugal (Lourinhã Formation) and there is some evidence to suggest that these types of dinosaur lived in Africa (fossils from the Tendaguru Formation in Tanzania).

It really is a most remarkable figure.  Having viewed the photographs that we had emailed, the dinosaur model collector asked us to reserve this particular model for him.  It was subsequently purchased and we suspect that in a few days it will be taking pride of place in his model collection.

JurassicCollectables Reviews the New Schleich Carnotaurus (2017)

By |2024-05-10T18:36:05+01:00April 6th, 2018|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page|0 Comments

A Video Review of the Schleich Carnotaurus Dinosaur Model

Those talented and clever people at JurassicCollectables have produced another dinosaur model video review.  This time it is the Schleich “Conquering the Earth” Carnotaurus figure from 2017 that is given the star treatment.  This figure was introduced by Schleich last year, but interest in Carnotaurus has certainly been piqued after its appearance in the recent “Jurassic World – Fallen Kingdom” movie trailer.  Whilst the tyrannosaurids rose to prominence in the Northern Hemisphere during the Late Cretaceous, in the south, as the super-continent Gondwana continued to break apart, it was the bizarre abelisaurids, such as Carnotaurus, that took on the role of apex predators.

Conquering the Earth Carnotaurus

In this short video (duration a little under eight minutes), a Schleich Carnotaurus dinosaur model is unwrapped and put on the display turntable.  The narrator discusses the model and highlights some of the features, including how it reminds him of another Carnotaurus figures that came out as merchandise from earlier “Jurassic Park/Jurassic World” dinosaur movies.

The video review gives model collectors the opportunity to see this very unique dinosaur model up close.  The model has a very distinctive skull, a point emphasised in the video.  The narrator comments on the simple but effective colour scheme and praises the wet, glossy look of the eye that helps to animate this figure.  The rows of neck plates and other osteoderms are mentioned, although, the spokesperson for JurassicCollectables does not comment on the distinct overbite depicted on this short-skulled dinosaur.

A Tactile Dinosaur Model (Schleich Carnotaurus)

Schleich are building a reputation for the tactile quality of their dinosaur models.  The narrator in the video alludes to the “feel” of the model, the different sized scales and their texture lends a kinaesthetic quality to this dinosaur, a point picked up by numerous teaching assistants and learning support advisers in schools who are using Schleich dinosaur models to assist with sensory play and kinaesthetic themed learning.

Our thanks to, JurassicCollectables for their most informative and instructive video review of the Schleich Carnotaurus, we look forward to this talented team producing more videos of the Schleich “Conquering the Earth” dinosaur model range in the future.

Prehistoric Dioramas Showcased in the South African Sun

Brothers Luke and Raef have their very own customised, unique prehistoric landscapes for their dinosaur models to explore thanks to a hard-working and dedicated father.  A few weeks ago, Everything Dinosaur was sent in some pictures of a second dinosaur diorama that had been built by dad Paul at their home in South Africa.  The two prehistoric landscapes, complete with replica volcano, a cave inhabited by early hominins and a marine seascape, look fantastic side by side in the family’s garden.  It helps to live in a hot country when it comes to showcasing your model making skills outdoors.

Many Hours of Hard Work

Fans of building dioramas and model scenes will know just how many hours of hard work have gone into building these prehistoric landscapes.  The second project was started over the Christmas holidays and the material chosen to provide the contours and that steep cliff leading to the water feature was fibreglass, which can be tricky to work with, but the end results speak for themselves.

Over the years, we have featured several examples of prehistoric landscapes and dioramas, we are always impressed and amazed by the ingenuity shown by the talented model makers.  Young Raef’s landscape includes a cleverly constructed marine environment, just the sort of place needed for your sea monsters and other figures to hang out.

A Team Effort

The whole family was involved in this enterprise, all helping to create the landscape, paint the scenery, sort out the planting of the prehistoric vegetation, seaweeds and corals (see above) and to create some of the amazing special effects such as wires for the pterosaur models to be suspended from.

Commenting on the success of the projects, dad Paul stated:

“We completed the second landscape over Christmas, I never want to work with fibreglass again, but all is well that ends well.  The kids were heavily involved in modelling and painting the landscape.  They are very pleased with it and therefore so am I!”

Everything Dinosaur Customers Demonstrate their Diorama Building Skills

Customers of Everything Dinosaur for several years, the family have slowly and surely built up a collection of prehistoric animals, including some rare figures, to populate their landscapes.

The photograph (above) highlights the attention to detail in the dinosaur dioramas, what a rich and varied planting scheme.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“What an impressive pair of dioramas!  It has taken some skill and technical ability to construct such beautiful prehistoric landscapes.  Each diorama has some amazing features like smoking volcanoes, flowing lava and a Stone Age cave complete with prehistoric art.”

Entering Model Making Competitions

In their email correspondence with Everything Dinosaur, the family have asked us about whether they could enter any model shows or diorama contests, we provided some advice suggesting that it was worthwhile seeing if there was a local model making club in South Africa where they could display their completed work.  Our congratulations to Paul, Raef, Luke and Amanda, we really appreciate you taking the time and trouble to share these images with us.
