The Rebor Saurophaganax maximus dinosaur models are in stock at Everything Dinosaur. This trio of terrific 1:35 scale dinosaur figures – “Jungle”, “Badlands” and “Volcanic Cavern” have arrived at Everything Dinosaur’s warehouse. Each figure has an articulated lower jaw, moveable arms and a flexible tail. The S. maximus replicas are supplied with a data card and an Everything Dinosaur Saurophaganax fact sheet.

A Trio of Colourful Theropods

These Rebor replicas represent one of the largest meat-eating dinosaurs known from the Late Jurassic. Size estimates vary, but Saurophaganax maximus is regarded as the biggest carnivore described to date from fossil material associated with the famous Morrison Formation. Some palaeontologists have suggested that this dinosaur could have reached 13 metres or more in length. The discovery of a femur (thigh bone) in New Mexico, which is more than a metre long and isolated teeth measuring in excess of 12 cm indicate that this member of the Allosauridae family was a formidable, super-sized predator.

Rebor Saurophaganax maximus “Notorious Big”

Rebor has nicknamed their Saurophaganax “Notorious Big”, perhaps in recognition of this dinosaur’s estimated size. The genus was originally erected based on observed differences in the shape of the backbones (vertebrae). Palaeontologists remain uncertain as to the validity of this genus, the fossil material could represent large Allosaurus individuals, after all, Allosaurus itself has become something of a taxonomic wastebasket and revision of fossil material has led to erection of a third species Allosaurus jimmadseni: A New Species of Allosaurus A. jimmadseni.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“It is wonderful to see a scale replica of Saurophaganax introduced to the Rebor range. Several theropods have been named from fossils found in Morrison Formation deposits, megalosaurs such as Torvosaurus and Marshosaurus, numerous species of Ceratosaurus plus other ceratosaurs too and of course, allosauroids. Of all these fearsome predators associated with the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation, Saurophaganax maximus is regarded by many palaeontologists as being the largest described to date.”

New Schleich Models Feature in Newsletter

By |2024-10-27T11:29:18+00:00March 5th, 2022|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Newsletters, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

The five recently introduced Schleich prehistoric animal figures are featured in the latest Everything Dinosaur customer newsletter. There are four new dinosaurs – Styracosaurus, Majungasaurus, Amargasaurus and Parasaurolophus, plus Schleich have added a model of the fearsome marine reptile Nothosaurus. All these figures are now in stock, further increasing customer choice when it comes to Everything Dinosaur toys and dinosaur models. Schleich models are extremely popular with young dinosaur fans.

Many factories have had problems with production over the last two years due to the impact of the global pandemic on logistics and manufacturing. It is great news to see five new Schleich prehistoric animals.

The new for 2022 Schleich Styracosaurus dinosaur model features in the February Everything Dinosaur newsletter. This is the first new Styracosaurus to be introduced by Schleich since 2013.

Schleich Styracosaurus

The first new figure to feature in the Everything Dinosaur newsletter is the Styracosaurus, an updated replica of the Styracosaurus figure that was introduced by the German manufacturer nine years ago, but then retired in 2016. The hand-painted Schleich Styracosaurus dinosaur model measures a fraction under twenty centimetres in length and it has been praised by many dinosaur fans and model collectors for its attractive colouration and detailed skin texture.

Schleich Majungasaurus and Schleich Amargasaurus

Schleich may have produced replicas representing Carnotaurus in the past, in addition, they have made many replicas of sauropods too, but this is the first time that an Amargasaurus and a Majungasaurus have been included in the Schleich product portfolio. The Majungasaurus colouration has been commented upon by collectors. It has been suggested that the paint scheme chosen is reminiscent of the artwork for the “Dinosaur King” animated Majungasaurus from the Japanese computer game.

Schleich Parasaurolophus and Schleich Nothosaurus

The other two models to feature in Everything Dinosaur’s newsletter are the Schleich Parasaurolophus and the replica of the Triassic marine reptile Nothosaurus. Schleich have made models representing Parasaurolophus in the past, they have also added replicas of marine reptiles such as Mosasaurus and Plesiosaurus to their model range, but this is the first time that a Nothosaurus figure has been introduced.

Preparing for the Eofauna Konobelodon Model

By |2024-10-26T16:14:58+01:00February 26th, 2022|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

Team members at Everything Dinosaur have been busy preparing for the arrival of the new for 2022, 1/35th scale prehistoric elephant model Konobelodon atticus from Eofauna. The model is expected to be in stock in the next few days and a free fact sheet has been prepared in readiness for the model’s arrival.

The K. atticus fact sheet will be included with sales of this prehistoric elephant model from Everything Dinosaur’s website. As part of the plans for the fact sheet, a scale drawing of this Miocene proboscidean was commissioned.

Konobelodon atticus

A gigantic and derived amebelodontid that represents the final evolutionary stage of the European shovel-tusker clade. Konobelodon is characterised by enormous body size, dorso-ventrally flattened mandibular tusks and very large, straight upper tusks. Its proboscidean lineage is ancestral to the true elephants (Elephantidae), including modern, living elephants and their extinct relatives the mammoths.

Konobelodon model

Originally named in 1857, Konobelodon atticus has had a long and complicated taxonomic history.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We are looking forward to the arrival of the Eofauna Konobelodon model. We are expecting this prehistoric animal model to arrive shortly along with the Eofauna Diplodocus carnegii replica, which is on the same shipment.”

The Everything Dinosaur website: Prehistoric Animal Models.

Originally Named Mastodon atticus

A large, left maxilla (upper jawbone), that was described by the famous German palaeontologist and zoologist Johann Andreas Wagner led to the erection of the species Mastodon atticus, in 1857. Wagner believed that this prehistoric elephant, fossils of which were found in Greece, was closely related to other European fossil elephants that had been studied by the influential French anatomist Georges Cuvier, who first used the term “Mastodon” to describe fossil elephants in 1806.

The PNSO Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus dinosaur model is a replica of a Chinese hadrosaurid (T. spinorhinus) which was formally named and described in 1958 (Yang Zhongjian often referred to in western literature as Chung Chien Young). A member of the lambeosaurine sub-family, the shape and function of the dinosaur’s crest has been an area of much debate amongst palaeontologists. The design team at PNSO have opted to give their figure a hatchet-shaped crest, reminiscent of the crest of Lambeosaurus, to which Tsintaosaurus was distantly related.

The Evolution of the Schleich Styracosaurus

By |2024-10-26T12:41:27+01:00February 18th, 2022|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

Schleich, the German manufacturer of models and figures has recently introduced five new for 2022 prehistoric animal models. Four of these figures are dinosaurs (Amargasaurus, Majungasaurus, Parasaurolophus and Styracosaurus). Schleich has made replicas of Parasaurolophus and Styracosaurus before. When reviewing the new for 2022 Schleich Parasaurolophus and producing a short video showcase of the model, team members at Everything Dinosaur included an image of Schleich’s “Replica-Saurus” Parasaurolophus that was introduced in the mid-1990s: Schleich Parasaurolophus Video Showcase. Today, we take a brief look at the previous Styracosaurus figures that the German company has made.

“Saurus” Styracosaurus Dinosaur Model

Everything Dinosaur estimates that the “Replica-Saurus” series of prehistoric animal models was first introduced by Schleich around 1996. This painted vinyl range, originally consisting of eight replicas, was often described as being a range of 1:40 scale figures. Styracosaurus was not one of the first figures made, but the series proved popular and soon more dinosaurs were added including a “Saurus” Styracosaurus.

Schleich "Saurus" Styracosaurus dinosaur model.

The Schleich “Saurus” Styracosaurus dinosaur model.

The Styracosaurus was typical of the dinosaur models produced at the time. Heavily influenced by palaeoartists such as Knight and Burian, the models tended to be dark brown or green with little sign of the imaginative colouring seen in later figures. Everything Dinosaur did stock this figure in the early years of this century, but the “Replica Saurus” range was gradually replaced and Schleich introduced the “Dinosaurs” sub-brand and this heralded the start of much more colourful prehistoric animal figures. An example of which, would be the 2013 Styracosaurus model, one of two dinosaur figures introduced by Schleich that year.

Schleich Styracosaurus and Carnotaurus (2013).

Schleich added two dinosaur models to its product portfolio in 2013, a Styracosaurus (foreground) and a crimson coloured Carnotaurus (background).

The image (above) shows the Schleich Styracosaurus figure with two abelisaurs in the background.  A spokesperson confirmed that abelisaurs are not known from North America and that Styracosaurus was not hunted by these theropods.

“Spiked Lizard!” celebrates 100th birthday!

The Schleich 2013 Styracosaurus Model

The second Styracosaurus model was introduced in 2013. It commemorated the centenary of the naming and scientific description of this iconic Late Cretaceous horned dinosaur (Lambe 1913). In 2016 Schleich dropped the umbrella “World of History” branding and re-organised their dinosaur range once more. Sadly, the 2013 Styracosaurus was short-lived and within just a few years the figure was retired and moved out of production.

The New for 2022 Schleich Styracosaurus figure

Styracosaurus fans have had to wait for nearly a decade for a new Schleich “spiked lizard” replica. The new for 2022 Schleich Styracosaurus figure has been well-received by dinosaur model fans and collectors. Of the five new models of extinct creatures introduced by Schleich this year (2022), the Styracosaurus is our personal favourite.

New Schleich Prehistoric Animal Models in Stock

The new for 2022 Schleich Majungasaurus, Styracosaurus and the Nothosaurus marine reptile model are in stock at Everything Dinosaur. All five of the recently announced new Schleich prehistoric animal models are now available from the UK-based mail order company.

The Schleich Majungasaurus

The stout Majungasaurus model, with its stubby front limbs and deep skull is a welcome addition to the Schleich range of dinosaur models. This is the first time that Schleich have made a replica of the Late Cretaceous abelisaurid from Madagascar, although they have made several models of the related Carnotaurus.

The Schleich Majungasaurus has a prominent horn on the top of its head, an anatomical feature that reflects the fossil record for this theropod, although when first found, the frontal horn was thought to represent the fossilised remains of a pachycephalosaur. The striped colour scheme is certainly striking and this figure has an articulated lower jaw.

Schleich Styracosaurus Dinosaur Model

Our personal favourite of the recent Schleich model releases is the Styracosaurus dinosaur model. Painted in muted shades of green and brown it contrasts with the more vibrant Majungasaurus figure. This is not the first time that Schleich have produced a Styracosaurus figure. There was a Styracosaurus in the original and long-retired “Saurus” series and in 2013, a blue-coloured Styracosaurus was introduced, marking the centenary of the formal naming and scientific description of “spiked lizard”.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that a future blog post would look at these Schleich Styracosaurus models in more detail.

Schleich Nothosaurus Marine Reptile Model

The only non-avian dinosaur model to be added to the Schleich “Dinosaurs” range is a replica of the Triassic marine reptile Nothosaurus. The model measures 22 cm in length. It joins a replica of a Plesiosaurus and a Mosasaurus in the Schleich range.

This is the first time that Schleich has made a Nothosaurus figure and although this genus has an extensive fossil record as well as a global distribution with fossil discoveries in Asia, North Africa, the Middle East as well as Europe, there are very few Nothosaurus models in the portfolios of mainstream model manufacturers.

PNSO will introduce a model of the fearsome Late Cretaceous Chinese tyrannosaur Zhuchengtyrannus in early spring. The PNSO Lu Xiong the Zhuchengtyrannus will be in stock at Everything Dinosaur in March (2022). Team members were aware of this tyrannosaur model going into production and arranged to delay the loading of their shipping container on the vessel leaving China until the new Zhuchengtyrannus figure was available from the factory.

Zhuchengtyrannus magnus

News of the discovery and scientific description of a new taxon of giant tyrannosaur from Asia (eastern China), began to appear in media outlets around the 1st of April 2011. The discovery of a giant, Late Cretaceous predator that may have rivalled Tyrannosaurus rex in size was thought by some to be an April Fool’s joke. A point alluded to in Everything Dinosaur’s blog post announcing the discovery: A New Tyrannosaur Taxon is Described.

The new for 2022 PNSO Zhuchengtyrannus model.

Zhuchengtyrannus Model Measurements

The PNSO Lu Xiong the Zhuchengtyrannus dinosaur model, pronounced “zoo-cheng-tie-ran-us” measures 28.5 cm in length and it stands 11.5 cm high. PNSO have introduced two other tyrannosaurs into their mid-size model range, both were launched in 2021. There is a replica of Tarbosaurus (Chuanzi the Tarbosaurus), which is thought by many palaeontologists to represent a sister taxon to Zhuchengtyrannus (Loewen et al, 2013) and a model of the controversial genus Nanotyrannus (N. lancensis).

Model Size Comparisons

  • PNSO Lu Xiong the Zhuchengtyrannus (2022) – length 28.5 cm and height 11.5 cm.
  • The PNSO Chuanzi the Tarbosaurus (2021) – length 31 cm and height 11 cm.
  • PNSO Logan the Nanotyrannus (2021) – length 17 cm and height 6.5 cm.

Evidence of a Second Large Tyrannosaur from Shandong Province

The fossil material ascribed to Zhuchengtyrannus consists of a left dentary (lower jaw) and a nearly complete right maxilla (bone from the upper jaw). Both were found in a hadrosaur bonebed deposit. Calculating the size of this fearsome theropod has proved difficult, although it has been described as an apex predator.

Intriguingly, other tyrannosaur bones were found in the same bonebed. A lower jaw and a maxilla from suspected other tyrannosaurs (specimen numbers ZCDM V0030 and ZCDM V0032 respectively), were discovered. Both fossils differ from the equivalent material ascribed to Z. magnus and from all known tyrannosaurs. This suggests that at least one other large tyrannosaur was present in the palaeoenvironment.

Everything Dinosaur team members have created a short, forty second video that highlights the PNSO Paul the Allosaurus dinosaur model. This replica of the Late Jurassic theropod Allosaurus has proved to be extremely popular amongst model collectors and dinosaur fans. Everything Dinosaur has set about creating short YouTube videos that are between thirty to sixty seconds in length that feature some of the prehistoric animal models that the UK-based company stocks.

The PNSO Paul the Allosaurus figure has been a top seller since it was introduced last year, so it was an obvious candidate for the company’s video showcase project.

Introduced in 2021, part of a substantial an enlargement of the PNSO not-to-scale mid-size model range, Paul the Allosaurus is also a firm favourite amongst Everything Dinosaur team members. The video showcase shows the figure on a turntable and demonstrates the articulated jaw. The packaging is shown and a team member holds the model so the size of the figure can be easily assessed. The model measurements (approximately 25 cm in length and around 9 cm in height), are also stated in the brief video.

Creating Videos to Help Customers

These short videos are designed to provide a “flavour” of the figure. The Everything Dinosaur website (and this blog), puts up lots of images of prehistoric animal models, but customers have requested videos and team members are busy compiling a library of short videos to provide customers with more information and to help them to make informed purchase decisions.

Preparing for a New Nothosaurus

By |2024-10-14T13:25:30+01:00January 22nd, 2022|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur and Prehistoric Animal Drawings, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

The new for 2022 Schleich Nothosaurus model will soon be in stock at Everything Dinosaur and team members have been busy preparing a fact sheet all about this Triassic marine reptile. We research and write an information sheet on virtually every prehistoric animal model that we stock. The Nothosaurus fact sheet will be sent out with our sales of the Schleich model.

Schleich Nothosaurus model

The new for 2022 Schleich Nothosaurus marine reptile model.

Several Species of Nothosaurus Have Been Described

Several species of Nothosaurus have been named and scientifically described, although the taxonomy and exact composition of this genus is still debated. The type species, is N. mirabilis, named from fossils found in Middle Triassic rocks from Germany. It is estimated to have been up to four metres in length, although it shared its marine habitat with considerably larger nothosaurs such as Nothosaurus giganteus, which like the recently described Nothosaurus zhangi (2014), from China may have reached lengths of around seven metres, making these fish-eaters from the Triassic bigger than an extant Saltwater crocodile (C. porosus).

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“The Nothosaurus fact sheet will be sent out with the new Schleich model. Collectors will be aware that there is a small, blue nothosaur figure included in the Wild Safari Prehistoric World prehistoric sea life toob, but it is still great to see another replica of this important Triassic marine reptile incorporated within a manufacturer’s model range. We congratulate Schleich for introducing this figure. It is the only non-dinosaur model announced by Schleich for 2022 in their Dinosaurier range.”

A Nothosaurus Model

A spokesperson for the UK-based mail order company stated that they were delighted to see this marine reptile model added to the Schleich portfolio.

The spokesperson added:

“This new figure will help children to understand the diversity of marine reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic.  We congratulate Schleich for introducing a Nothosaurus model.”

One of the things we are testing is the addition of short product videos to our website. We already provide lots of images of the prehistoric animal themed items that we sell, but a video showcasing the product can often help customers to understand the model better. For example, we can show articulated jaws, flexible tails and poseable arms. If a video shows a team member holding the figure, then viewers can instantly get an idea of the model’s size.

Improving an Award-winning Website

This month (January 2022), Everything Dinosaur was awarded the Feefo Platinum Trusted Service award, the highest accolade for customer service. The company’s commitment to helping customers is at the very heart of our business and creating videos of products we sell should help to inform and to educate our website visitors.

We want to provide showcases for the range of prehistoric animal models that we stock. Actual footage of the replica shot by us. Shortly, we will post up a video that looks at the Rebor Smilodon populator Stray Cat in the plain colour variant and we would like your views. The video will be up in a couple of days – we would love to hear what you think of this method of showcasing prehistoric animal models.

Commenting on the Proposed Everything Dinosaur Website Developments

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Unlike many companies, which do not physically stock items but rely on them being despatched to customers from China, we actually bring prehistoric animal models into our own warehouse. We have access to the replicas and we can shoot videos using the actual models rather than just relying on images that the manufacturer sends out. We can then give our customers much more visual information about a particular product and produce videos that show the figure from every angle.”

YouTube subscribers will be given the opportunity to have an exclusive first view of the Rebor Smilodon video. Team members at Everything Dinosaur will be asking for feedback and comments prior to the video going live on the Everything Dinosaur website.
