PNSO Paul the Allosaurus Video Showcase

Everything Dinosaur team members have created a short, forty second video that highlights the PNSO Paul the Allosaurus dinosaur model. This replica of the Late Jurassic theropod Allosaurus has proved to be extremely popular amongst model collectors and dinosaur fans. Everything Dinosaur has set about creating short YouTube videos that are between thirty to sixty seconds in length that feature some of the prehistoric animal models that the UK-based company stocks.

The PNSO Paul the Allosaurus figure has been a top seller since it was introduced last year, so it was an obvious candidate for the company’s video showcase project.

PNSO Paul the Allosaurus

Introduced in 2021, part of a substantial an enlargement of the PNSO not-to-scale mid-size model range, Paul the Allosaurus is also a firm favourite amongst Everything Dinosaur team members. The video showcase shows the figure on a turntable and demonstrates the articulated jaw. The packaging is shown and a team member holds the model so the size of the figure can be easily assessed. The model measurements (approximately 25 cm in length and around 9 cm in height), are also stated in the brief video.

Creating Videos to Help Customers

These short videos are designed to provide a “flavour” of the figure. The Everything Dinosaur website (and this blog), puts up lots of images of prehistoric animal models, but customers have requested videos and team members are busy compiling a library of short videos to provide customers with more information and to help them to make informed purchase decisions.

The new for 2021 PNSO Paul the Allosaurus dinosaur model has an articulated lower jaw, just like the majority of the theropod figures that PNSO have produced in the larger size model series.

The Popular Papo Pentaceratops Gets a Display Base

Our thanks to prehistoric animal model fan and collector James who sent into Everything Dinosaur some pictures of the display base he had made for his Papo Pentaceratops model. The clever design of the Papo Pentaceratops permits collectors to display this figure as a quadruped or in a rearing pose, the Pentaceratops being balanced on its hind legs supported by its tail. James has added a base to the figure and created a little prehistoric scene in which this large, horned dinosaur is confronted by a crocodilian.

Crocodilians Prey on Dinosaurs

Palaeontologists have named and described a wide range of different crocodilians and their close relatives from fossils found in Upper Cretaceous rocks in North America. Pentaceratops fossils are known from the Kirtland Formation (late Campanian faunal stage), in New Mexico. The sandstones and mudstones that predominately make up these deposits were laid down in a wide, alluvial flood plain close to the western shore of a shallow sea that split North America into two landmasses – Appalachia to the east and Laramidia to the west.

Several crocodilians are known from the Kirtland Formation (Denazinosuchus, Leidyosuchus and Brachychampsa), but these genera would have posed no threat to a fully-grown Pentaceratops, or indeed any large plant-eating dinosaur.

An adult Deinosuchus could have been a threat to a Pentaceratops. Although this giant alligatoroid lived during the Campanian and its fossils are associated with estuarine environments of the Western Interior Seaway, team members at Everything Dinosaur are unaware of any Deinosuchus fossils having been excavated from Kirtland Formation deposits. Still, it is highly likely that dinosaurs such as Pentaceratops would have frequently come across large crocodilians at water holes or when attempting to cross rivers, so some interspecific interaction is entirely plausible.

Papo Pentaceratops

The Papo Pentaceratops has proved to be a popular model, since it was introduced into the Papo “Dinosaures” range in 2019. A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur stated that they had been delighted to receive the images of the dinosaur and praised the model collector for creating such a carefully constructed prehistoric scene.

An Exclusive Everything Dinosaur Video Showcase

We at Everything Dinosaur get lots of feedback and suggestions from our customers and we are grateful for the comments that we receive. We read them all carefully and where we can, we implement customer recommendations.

Take for example, a suggestion we have had from several of our customers – wouldn’t it be great if there were short product videos on the Everything Dinosaur website, so visitors could get a really good look at the item before buying. A video showcasing the prehistoric animal model would help a potential customer to make an informed purchase decision.

Everything Dinosaur listens to its customers, we aim to create short 30-60 second videos and embed them into our website.

Here is a short YouTube video that explains our plans and reveals the first figure to receive a “video showcase” – the Rebor Smilodon populator Stray Cat in the plain colour version.

As well as seeing images supplied by the model manufacturer, visitors to Everything Dinosaur’s website: Everything Dinosaur could get access to a short video that provides a showcase for the prehistoric animal model. Potential customers can view a video of the actual model, allowing them to see how the articulated jaws works, how much movement the flexible tail provides and they can gain an appreciation of the build quality.

In the case of the Rebor Smilodon populator Stray Cat figures, our video showcase demonstrates how easy it is to swap the heads over, allowing the figure to be displayed with either its mouth open or closed.

Plans to Make More Product Video Showcases

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that the company still intended to produce other videos such as more detailed model reviews, updates on new model introductions and videos providing hints and tips for collectors.

He explained:

“At the request of our customers, we plan to embed into our product pages short videos less than a minute in length that provide a visual guide to the figure, its packaging and the box contents. We have been asked to include footage of a person holding the model, viewers can instantly judge how big the figure is.”

Providing Model Measurements

The model video showcase will permit us to reinforce the printed information we include about products on the Everything Dinosaur website. We do measure models and figures ourselves and post up this information under the “additional information” link on the product page, but we can also state the measurements and show any declared scale in the “video showcase”.

Adding Exclusive Videos to our Website

The Everything Dinosaur website is being constantly updated.

Everything Dinosaur team members conduct regular reviews of our website: Everything Dinosaur.

Our website has been praised for its ease of use, visitors find it easy to navigate and it is designed to be very customer friendly. However, we do not intend to rest on our laurels and as we believe in continuous improvement, we are working with our IT specialists and top consultants to provide an even greater customer experience.

One of the things we are testing is the addition of short product videos to our website. We already provide lots of images of the prehistoric animal themed items that we sell, but a video showcasing the product can often help customers to understand the model better. For example, we can show articulated jaws, flexible tails and poseable arms. If a video shows a team member holding the figure, then viewers can instantly get an idea of the model’s size.

New Schleich Amargasaurus Model

The new for 2022 Schleich Amargasaurus dinosaur model has arrived at our warehouse and is now in stock at Everything Dinosaur. This is the first of five new prehistoric animal figures from Schleich expected to arrive and it is a fantastic figure of a South American sauropod.

The model measures around 25.5 cm long, the head is approximately 7 cm off the ground and the height of the neural spines on the neck is around 10.5 cm.

An Impressive Size for a South American Sauropod

The figure is considerably chunkier than other Amargasaurus replicas and like many Schleich models it is pleasing to handle and quite tactile. No doubt this figure will prove popular in creative and imaginative play. The model measures around 25.5 cm in length, although because of the slight bend in the tail the figure is actually a little bigger. The head is approximately 7 cm off the ground and that magnificent double line of neural spines, complete with the thin flap of skin running between the spines is around 10.5 cm high.

As with other members of the Dicraeosauridae family of sauropods the external nares (nostrils), were located on the top of the skull. It is pleasing to note that the Schleich Amargasaurus dinosaur model reflects this anatomical feature found in the actual fossil material.

In Stock at Everything Dinosaur

Team members have been busy checking over the models, before booking them into stock and allocating them a bay in our warehouse. Whilst examining the figures, discussion turned to the correct term that would be applied to describe a herd of these Early Cretaceous dinosaurs. We are not sure whether a collective noun for a group of Amargasaurus dinosaurs has ever been coined. As the original scientific paper was written in Spanish, perhaps a word from this language to describe a group of these long-necked dinosaurs might be appropriate.

William Reviews a Wonderful Mastodon Model

Our thanks to prehistoric animal model fan and collector William who sent into Everything Dinosaur his detailed review of the Safari Ltd Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mastodon figure. Here is William’s review of this prehistoric elephant model, which was first introduced in 2018.

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mastodon model.

Mammut americanum – Sculpted by Doug Watson

As with most of his previous model reviews, William starts by commenting on the head. He states that the Mastodon has a lower, flatter skull than mammoths and extant elephants. He comments that the Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mastodon has well defined, dark orange eyes with black pupils and nicely sculpted eye lids. The model is shown with its mouth open, the tongue can be seen but there is no second set of tusks in the lower jaw as found in other types of ancient proboscidean. The ears are small and reflect theories on thermoregulation (heat dispersal and conservation) in these large-bodied mammals.

Details on the trunk are highlighted. The figure has its trunk raised, either to sniff the air or bellow a challenge to a rival. William praises the trunk commenting that in life it would have been used to pluck foliage and branches as well as having a role as a tactile, sensory organ. The reviewer states that living elephants have 40,000 muscles in their trunk and are capable of lifting over 700lbs. He speculates that Mastodons may have had stronger trunks.

William observes that the prominent tusks are of a natural ivory colour and held low. They model has flexible tusks with no sharp tips, so these protrusions do not represent a hazard and are unlikely to cause injury.

Reviewing the Body and the Coat of the Mastodon Figure

William explains that the short, robust and muscular build of Mammut americanum was unlikely to lead to confusion with coeval mammoth species. The American Mastodon was ideally suited to its temperate forest environment. He provides size estimates and concludes that bulls were much larger than cows, as seen in living elephant species.

When discussing the coat, William states that it “is one of the finest sculpted I have ever seen, only surpassed by Eofauna’s Steppe Mammoth figure.”

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Mastodon is a marvel to touch and to hold thanks to the exquisite details of the model’s coat. He states that it is refreshing to see this as with mammoths’ hair colour would have varied between individuals and William speculates that perhaps, every once in a while, a genetic abnormality would permit an albino variant to be born.

Strong Legs

William praises the strong legs and highlights the detailing such as the toenails. He comments that these large animals would have traversed temperate woodlands and conifer forests, eating a wide variety of plant material in order to satisfy their huge appetites. He completes his model review by stating that the model has a rich auburn colour with a dark wash that has been skilfully applied to highlight the skin folds and the muscles under the skin.

American Mastodon Fact File

To conclude his review of the model, William provided some additional information regarding this species, commenting that in 1705 in the New York village of Claverack a Dutch settler whilst out working dug up a large tooth, the first of many found over next two centuries. William briefly outlines the evolutionary history of the prehistoric elephant lineage and explained that it was the French naturalist Georges Cuvier who erected the genus.

William explained that these elephants ranged from Alaska/Canada in the north down to central Mexico, but there is no fossil evidence of these animals ever having reached South America. Most scientists believe that the last of the Mastodons perished along with much of the American megafauna around 10,000 years ago, although these huge herbivores may has survived until as recently as 4,000 years ago, in isolated pockets.

He states that the Wild Safari Prehistoric World American Mastodon is a great addition to his model collection and he adds that he received the figure with a fast despatch and delivery from Everything Dinosaur. It arrived in 100% perfect condition. William also praised the customer service of Everything Dinosaur.

The New Rebor Smilodon populator Stray Cat (Plain)

Team members at Everything Dinosaur have posted up some pictures of the recently introduced Rebor Smilodon populator Stray Cat (plain colour variant). The figure has a declared scale of 1:11 and the Smilodon is the first prehistoric mammal model to be added to the Rebor range. Previously, the only mammal figure in the range was the 1/11th scale figure of a Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei).

Two Interchangeable Smilodon Heads

This beautiful model is supplied with two interchangeable heads so the Smilodon can be displayed with either mouth open or mouth closed. The head fits securely into the neck of the body and it is difficult to discern a join. The clever design team at Rebor came up with this idea as it permits them to avoid having an unsightly joint on the figure associated with an articulated lower jaw.

Smilodon populator

Several species of “knife-tooth” have been named and described. S. populator is regarded as the largest. Some individuals had massive upper canine teeth around 28 cm in length. This robust and powerful predator roamed the southern portions of the Americas. It would have dwarfed the Sabre-Toothed Cats of the United States and was one of the largest felids to have ever lived, with a shoulder height of approximately 1.2 metres.

Caldey Illustrates a Wonderful Spiclypeus

Talented young artist Caldey has sent into Everything Dinosaur her latest dinosaur artwork. She has produced a drawing of the Late Cretaceous chasmosaurine Spiclypeus (S. shipporum) having once again been inspired by prehistoric animal models in her collection.

Named and scientifically described in 2016, fossils of this large ceratopsian come from Judith River Formation exposures in Montana. When the fossils were being excavated the dinosaur was nicknamed “Judith” by the field team. Officially this specimen is CMNFV 57081 and it is now housed in the fossil vertebrate collection at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Ontario.

Beasts of the Mesozoic Spiclypeus shipporum

Caldey has sent into Everything Dinosaur several horned dinosaur drawings, many of which have been based around the colourful Beasts of the Mesozoic model series. These articulated dinosaur models are well-known for having stunning box art, so it is quite fitting to see these figures encouraging and inspiring young artists.

A Wave 2 Ceratopsian

The Beasts of the Mesozoic Spiclypeus model, was one of nine figures added to this popular range in the second production wave. Caldey has already sent into Everything Dinosaur her drawing of another wave 2 figure, an illustration of Medusaceratops (M. lokii).

A Collector Shows His Dinosaur Model Collection

A Trio of Hadrosaurs

PNSO have increased their range of mid-size dinosaur models significantly in the last two years. John has only just started to collect PNSO figures, but he has already picked up Audrey the Lambeosaurus, Caroline the Corythosaurus (both 2020 introductions) and a beautiful Wyatt the Parasaurolophus figure, which came into stock at Everything Dinosaur in 2021.

John has provided bases for his duck-billed dinosaurs as well as supplying a background as part of his dinosaur-themed display.

Recently, PNSO added a stunning replica of “titanic swan”, an Olorotitan to their mid-size model range, yet another superb lambeosaurine hadrosaur to put on display.

Whilst many collectors choose to display their collections on shelves or within specially constructed glass cabinets, John has opted to provide backdrops for his figures, producing the illusion of the dinosaur having been photographed in natural surroundings. We think his choice of backgrounds are most effective.

A Dinosaur Battle

PNSO introduced a diorama that featured a ferocious Yangchuanosaurus attacking the Chinese stegosaur Chungkingosaurus. The fighting pair are presented on a detailed base and John has added to this by sliding in a suitable background to depict this dinosaur conflict from the Jurassic. The prominent conifers on the backdrop fit well with a Middle/Late Jurassic prehistoric scene.

A Pair of Stegosaurs on Display

In 2021, PNSO introduced a model set that featured an adult Stegosaurus and a juvenile. The Chinese design team wanted to highlight how these famous dinosaurs changed as they grew and matured. The figures entitled Biber and Rook certainly do that and John has added emphasis to the pair by placing them on their own circular display base and adding a carefully chosen background.

Happy New Year from Everything Dinosaur

Today, being the first day of January, it is appropriate for us at Everything Dinosaur to mark the start of 2022 by wishing all our readers, customers, fans and followers a peaceful and prosperous new year. We are certainly living in challenging times. Team members have lots of exciting plans for the next twelve months or so and we are looking forward to sharing them with you.

In the meantime, we hope everyone stays safe and we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year!
