Schleich Dunkleosteus –   A Sneaky Peek

Team members at Everything Dinosaur got the chance to get up close to a number of the new for 2016 Schleich prehistoric animal models the other day.  Feedback from our customers, those had already viewed the pictures on this blog in previous articles, has been positive, but we were asked to confirm whether or not the Schleich Dunkleosteus had an articulated jaw or not.

Schleich Dunkleosteus

Just by chance we shot a short piece of video, showing the articulated jaw of the Dunkleosteus.  We do our best to respond to all the questions and queries we get regarding new model introductions, so without any further delay, here is a short ten second video which showcases the new Schleich Dunkleosteus and confirms that this placoderm replica does indeed have an articulated lower jaw.

A Very Quick Peek at the New for 2016 Schleich Dunkleosteus Model

This model is due to be introduced in the summer of 2016.  It is scheduled to become available at around the same time as the Herrerasaurus and the Baraparasaurus models.  For information on these two Schleich releases and for exclusive photographs, including more shots of that fantastic Dunkleosteus, check out this earlier article: New Schleich Dinosaurs* for 2016.

Dunkleosteus from the Deadly Devonian

Reaching lengths of up to ten metres, Dunkleosteus (D. terrelli) was one of the largest vertebrates around during the Late Devonian.  Part of the highly successful placoderm group, these armoured fish dominated marine and freshwater environments, having first evolved sometime in the Silurian.  This bizarre looking fish, with its huge jaw plates that acted like shears, was formally named and described in 1873 by Dr. John Newberry.  The genus name is in honour of the famous American palaeontologist Dr David Dunkle of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

The fearsome reputation of this prehistoric fish was firmly secured in the minds of fans of ancient life when the Devonian was rated number five in the BBC television documentary “The Seven Deadliest Seas”.  Adventurer Nigel Marvin came face to face with this leviathan in the programme.  He used a spherical diving cage to protect himself from those powerful cutting plates.

Of all the new Schleich releases scheduled for this year, the Schleich Dunkleosteus certainly seems to have captured people’s imaginations.

We hope readers like our sneaky peek of the Schleich Dunkleosteus.

Dinosaur Switch-A-Rooz (T. rex and Triceratops)

Two soft toy dinosaurs for the price of one, now that sounds like quite a bargain.  It’s exactly what you get with these very cleverly designed dinosaur Switch-A-Rooz.  Simply turn the T. rex inside out to reveal a Triceratops or should that be turn the Triceratops inside out to make the Tyrannosaurus rex soft toy appear.

Dinosaur Switch-A-Rooz

If you aren’t quite sure what we mean, the helpful elves at Everything Dinosaur have made a short, forty second video that shows the dinosaur Switch-A-Rooz in action.

How to Turn a Triceratops into a Tyrannosaurus rex and Vice Versa

Soft Toy Dinosaurs

We are reliably informed that the Triceratops soft toy is called “Rocky” and the Tyrannosaurus rex is called “Rex” (we should have been able to work that one out ourselves).  Suitable for children form three years plus, these dinosaur Switch-A-Rooz give soft toy dinosaurs a new “twist”.

Reversible Dinosaur Soft Toys

The soft toys stand just a fraction under twenty centimetres high and they are made from super-soft material which can be sponge cleaned if required.  These reversible stuffed Late Cretaceous dinosaurs will really help to inspire creative play amongst young palaeontologists.  We couldn’t decide which one was our favourite.

They certainly make a perfect pair, two soft toy dinosaurs for the price of one.  Give Triceratops a twist and watch him transform into a Tyrannosaurus rex called Rex.  Switch-A-Rooz dinosaurs, a dinosaur double-act which provides a pair of prehistoric plush.

Rebor Hatching Velociraptors Video Review

Rebor Club Selection Hatching Velociraptors Video Review

The second replica in the highly sought after Rebor Club Selection series is this excellent set of hatching Velociraptors.  The little theropods have been nick-named Lock, Stock and Barrel and in this ten minute video review, Everything Dinosaur looks at this 1:1 scale replica in detail and provides helpful, scientific insight into the layout and design of this particular collector’s piece.

Velociraptor mongoliensis

We suspect that the sculpt is based on the first species of Velociraptor to be scientifically named and described (Velociraptor mongoliensis), fossils of which were discovered by an American Museum of Natural History expedition to Mongolia in 1924.  Ironically, the expedition did not set out to intentionally find new dinosaurs, the primary objective was to discover the ancestry of modern humans.

Rebor are to be praised for introducing such a well thought out and fascinating replica.  In this short, (10:13) video, we comment on the shape of the eggs, explain a little about the sandy substrate that the three models rest upon and discuss ways in which this centre piece could be presented.  In addition, we look at the science behind the sculpt.  For example, although the dinosaurs are presented as scaly reptiles, rather than fuzzy bird-like theropods, we look at the implications for producing model baby dinosaurs that are so well developed.

One glance at those teeth and sharp claws on display would convince you that these young Velociraptors are capable of looking after themselves almost as soon as they have hatched.  What is the science behind Rebor’s thinking?  We try to present some evidence to support Rebor’s interpretation and highlight a couple of aspects of this model such as the vertical pupils in the eyes which might have been over looked by other reviewers.

Rebor Ceratosaurus Video Review

Fans of dinosaurs and model collectors have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the newest Rebor replica on the block.  The Rebor Ceratosaurus 1:35 dinosaur replica is now in stock at Everything Dinosaur and what a splendid model it is.  This is the fourth in the Rebor series and team members have made a short (ten minute) video review of this excellent model of this Late Jurassic predator.

Ceratosaurus Video Review

In this short video we explain the introduction of the first “non monospecific” replica into this Rebor model collection, we outline what is known about Ceratosaurus dentisulcatus and we discuss why Rebor has made such a good job with the base, demonstrating an understanding of the ancient environment (palaeoenvironment), of the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation.  Well done Rebor!

Just like the rest of the highly impressive Rebor range introduced so far this dinosaur has a nickname.  Say hello to “Savage”.

A Video Review of the Papo Young Apatosaurus Dinosaur Model

The Young Apatosaurus dinosaur model is proving to be very popular amongst dinosaur fans and model collectors.  We have produced a brief video review of this new for 2015 Papo replica.  In this video review we look at the model in more detail and explain about the body proportions as they are shown in this particular dinosaur sculpt.

Video Review

The video is just over eight minutes in length (8:08), we look at the skin texture in more detail, explain about the size of the head as it relates to the rest of the body  and we discuss that very thick neck.  The design team at Papo have certainly done an excellent job, on what is the company’s second sauropod after the enormous Brachiosaurus replica was introduced a couple of years ago.

Papo Young Apatosaurus

This dinosaur was formerly known as Brontosaurus (Thunder Lizard), a great name for one of the larger and heavier diplodocids.

For explanation as to why this dinosaur had to have its name changed: Why Brontosaurus is No More.

Everything Dinosaur wrote a short article, a while back now, about the name change to Apatosaurus and the reasons for it, this is the article we refer to in our Papo Young Apatosaurus video review.

From the nostrils located on the top of its head (correct according to most palaeontologists), to the supersonic, cracking whip-like tail, this is a super dinosaur replica.  Well done Papo!

Note

Following a taxonomic review of the Diplodocidae by scientists and academics the genus Brontosaurus has been resurrected and Brontosaurus excelsus is regarded as the type species.

Schleich Anhanguera Pterosaur – Video Review

With all the new models and replicas due out this year, Everything Dinosaur team members are having a job finding the time to review them all.  However, after several requests, we have got round to shooting a quick video review of the new for 2015 Schleich Anhanguera replica.  What a beautiful model of a flying reptile this is!  The detail around the eyes is simply amazing and although the wing shape and stance of this replica is not quite how we imagined, this does nothing to detract from what is a very colourful and well made pterosaur model.

Schleich Anhanguera Model

Over the last three years or so Schleich have revamped their prehistoric animal model range, opting to change the sizes of their models and introducing a number of very colourful and bright prehistoric animals.  The sky blue tones of the Anhanguera replica certainly make this flying reptile model stand out from the crowd.

To view the range of Schleich prehistoric animals available from Everything Dinosaur: Schleich World of History Models and Figures.

In this video, which is six minutes and thirty-five seconds long, we talk about where in the world Anhanguera fossils have been found and then we describe the model in detail.  Schleich has made a model of Anhanguera before, a smaller replica once formed part of the company’s not-to-scale “dinosaurs” range.

A Mini Quetzalcoatlus Figure

This is not the only pterosaur figure introduced by Schleich this year.  In the popular, mini dinosaurs range, a flying reptile replica was included, this time a model of a giant pterosaur, distantly related to Anhanguera, the Late Cretaceous behemoth known as Quetzalcoatlus.  It too is a very colourful replica.

Matthew the Dinosaur King – Unboxing Video

At Everything Dinosaur we get the chance to view all the amazing pictures and videos sent into us or posted up on line by our customers.  We are really impressed by all the hard work involved, for example, we noticed that Matthew, a keen fan of prehistoric animal models had posted up a video of him unboxing the new Safari Ltd models and two of the new for 2015 replicas from Schleich.  In this short, (5 minute) video, Matthew unpacks the Carnegie Collectibles Velociraptor along  with the four new Wild Safari Dinos prehistoric animals – Nasutoceratops, Sauropelta, Archaeopteryx and the amazing Yutyrannus.  We were really impressed with the comments Matthew makes about these new dinosaur models.

In addition, to the new Safari Ltd models, Matthew discusses the first of the new for 2015 Schleich World of History replicas, namely the beautiful Kentrosaurus and the colourful Anhanguera pterosaur, complete with articulated lower jaw.  We know just how eager model collectors are when it comes to getting their hands on new prehistoric animal models, over the next few weeks or so our warehouse is going to be very busy with all the new stock deliveries.  We are excited too.

A Pleasure to See Unboxing Videos

A spokesperson from the UK based company commented:

“It is always a pleasure to view unboxing videos and to hear from our customers in general.  We know how keenly model collectors anticipate new additions to ranges, so we work as hard as we can to get them into stock as quickly as possible.”

Everything Dinosaur Unboxing Video

Our congratulations to Matthew and we look forward to viewing his individual model reviews (as hinted in the video).  One thing for sure, viewers can see how well packaged our parcels are, lots of bubble wrap on show and a strong box for sending out the items. We have been busy on a number of other projects this week, including sorting out the new Schleich replicas and models that are due out in the summer of 2015, we think that Matthew will probably want to make another unboxing video when the second batch of Schleich replicas become available later this year.

We know that Matthew and many of our other customers around the world have posted up videos and reviews, we do try and catch up with them all, give a “like”, provide a positive comment, give a Google thumbs up and so on.  Everything Dinosaur is always delighted to see such reviews and videos posted up by our customers.

Well done Matthew.

Papo Young Apatosaurus and the Papo Tupuxuara Models – Papo Prehistoric Animal Models

Everything Dinosaur team members have created a short video that highlights new for 2015, Papo prehistoric animal models.

Here is a quick video that showcases two of the new for 2015 prehistoric animal models from Papo.  The video features the Young Apatosaurus replica, (dimensions confirmed as being 37 cm long, 13 cm high) and the excellent pterosaur figure – a Tupuxuara.  In this short, (43 second video), we also compare these two models to the enormous Papo Brachiosaurus dinosaur model that was introduced in the autumn of 2012.  The Tupuxuara pterosaur may be small but it is beautifully painted and the crest detail is superb.

The Papo Brachiosaurus measures a whopping 40 cm in length, the head is some 32 cm high.  We used this model to provide a scale to compare the two new additions to the Papo range.  The Young Apatosaurus, in our view, represents a sub-adult, think of this replica as representing a teenage dinosaur.

Both the Papo Tupuxuara and the Papo Young Apatosaurus models are expected to be in stock at Everything Dinosaur early March, although they could arrive a little earlier.  Check out this web log and Everything Dinosaur’s social media pages for updates.

Significant Company Investment

Schleich have invested heavily in the development of their dinosaur model range.  The company sees these new additions as part of a three-cornered strategy to continue to grow the Schleich brand in 2015, Schleich refer to this strategy as the 3-Ds (one of the Ds stands for dinosaurs).  Just for the record, the other two Ds stand for dragons (big increase in fantasy dragon figures in 2015) and for D.C. Comics (Schleich will be marketing a set of figures inspired by characters created by the comic strip company (Justice League).  Two further dinosaur models, a Giganotosaurus and a Spinosaurus will be added to the World of History model range in July.
