A Video Review of the Rebor “War Pigs- Ankylosaurus Figures

The latest JurassicCollectables video to be posted up on their YouTube channel features not one, but three Rebor replicas to be exact. All three of the recently introduced Ankylosaurus 1:35 scale figures have been reviewed in a single video, permitting collectors and dinosaur model fans to get a really good close up look at these armoured dinosaurs and compare the three different colour schemes. Palaeontologists are not sure in which habitat Ankylosaurus (A. magniventris) lived, so Rebor have cleverly introduced three different versions – “plain”, “mountain” and “woodland”.

A Flexible Bony Club Tail

In this detailed and most informative review, (the video lasts a little under nineteen minutes), viewers are given the opportunity to have a really good look at all three of these skilfully crafted replicas of one of the most famous plant-eating dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous. In the video, viewers are shown just how flexible that bony club tail is. The figure comes as a two-piece set, the tail can be inserted into a slot and this saves on packaging and helps to protect the tail and the rest of the figure during transit. Once inserted, the tail can be moved into a variety of poses, collectors can depict their Rebor Ankylosaurus model swinging its club tail.

Rebor Ankylosaurus “Magnificent Fused Lizard”

Although named and scientifically described around 110 years ago and now representing an entire family of armoured dinosaurs (the Ankylosauridae), palaeontologists are increasingly becoming aware of just how atypical this armoured giant actually was. Rebor’s interpretation follows the principles laid out in several recently published scientific papers and the narrator from JurassicCollectables carefully guides the viewer over some of the finer points of each colour variant.

The close up of the interior of the mouth with its glossy look and the demonstration of the articulated jaw are worthy of special mention, as is the comparison with the Papo Ankylosaurus figure that occurs towards the end of this video review.

The medium of video permits the differences between the three colour schemes to be clearly seen. The narrator’s personal favourite is “plain”, seen on the left of the picture below.

Comparing the Rebor War Pigs with Other Rebor Replicas

Off-colour Alan makes his customary appearance, there is a nice shot of Alan patting the head of one of the Rebor replicas. “Thumbs Up” for a Top Iguanodon Video Review

Once regarded as an “English” dinosaur, the holotype material for the only species represented within this genus has been assigned to extensive fossils from Belgium. There is certainly a long history of research into “iguana tooth” and a nice touch in the opening minute of the video review was to reference this fact and to show an image of the Iguanodon models on display at the Crystal Palace park in London. Our interpretation of iguanodont anatomy has certainly changed a lot since the days of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins.

A Detailed Video Description of Iguanodon

In the JurassicCollectables video review, the narrator provides a detailed description of this skilfully made plant-eating dinosaur model. Particular attention is given to the skull sculpt including the presence of an articulated lower jaw on the figure. The narrator discusses the grey tones used in the sculpt and the general painting of the model before the video shows the subtle black striping running down the thick tail.

Such colour patterns have been associated with hadrosaur fossils from North America and it is indeed very likely, that a large animal such as Iguanodon had a thick tail. The design team at Papo are praised for the detail that they have incorporated into the figure. The creases and folds of skin around the thighs and pelvic area are singled out for comment. The fine detailed scales on the hands of Iguanodon (complete with thumb spikes), are also discussed.

A Review of the Papo Therizinosaurus Model by JurassicCollectables

A month before the new “Jurassic World” film “Fallen Kingdom” hits cinema screens, JurassicCollectables have been busy creating their own blockbuster. Today, we feature their video review of the eagerly awaited Papo, new for 2018 Therizinosaurus dinosaur model. This new theropod figure is rapidly becoming a firm favourite amongst dinosaur fans and model collectors.

The Papo Therizinosaurus Model

Therizinosaurus is one of the more bizarre members of the dinosaurian Sub-Order Theropoda. It is widely believed that Therizinosaurus was herbivorous, those formidable metre-long claws on the hands, were probably used to hook branches to help this large animal feed. The claws may also have played a role in defence against marauding tyrannosaurids, Papo have sculpted their figure in a pose that makes the animal look like it is rearing up, perhaps to threaten an approaching pack of tyrannosaurs.

In the JurassicCollectables video review, which lasts just under nine minutes, the narrator comments upon the pose of this new Papo replica. The model is very stable and “firmly seated”, the figure is resting on its tail, with one foot on the ground and the other slightly raised, so that the toes help provide support.

Fine Feathers

In this very well put together video, the viewer is given a guided tour of the Papo model and the figure is highly praised for its detailed feathery textures running down the neck and across the back and shoulders. The abrupt transition from feathers to scales on the flanks is commented upon and the wonderfully well-painted wings are shown.

As a rather pot-bellied dinosaur, (a large gut is synonymous with a plant-eating dinosaur), Therizinosaurus had a relatively narrow set of jaws, the spokesperson for JurassicCollectables demonstrates the articulated lower jaw on the model and comments on the wet gloss look given to the mouth. The head shows lots of amazing detail including a prominent beak, a characteristic associated with most derived ornithischian dinosaurs, but also present on this lizard-hipped representative of the Dinosauria.

“Papo Have Really Got This Nailed”

The narrator is most impressed by this new for 2018 Papo model. He examines the fine textures and skin tones on the body of the dinosaur very carefully and compliments the French manufacturer. A number of Papo models are used to compare the size of the Papo Therizinosaurus and off-colour Alan makes a welcome appearance towards the end of this excellent video review.

A Video Review of the Schleich Carnotaurus Dinosaur Model

Those talented and clever people at JurassicCollectables have produced another dinosaur model video review. This time it is the Schleich “Conquering the Earth” Carnotaurus figure from 2017 that is given the star treatment. This figure was introduced by Schleich last year, but interest in Carnotaurus has certainly been piqued after its appearance in the recent “Jurassic World – Fallen Kingdom” movie trailer. Whilst the tyrannosaurids rose to prominence in the Northern Hemisphere during the Late Cretaceous, in the south, as the super-continent Gondwana continued to break apart, it was the bizarre abelisaurids, such as Carnotaurus, that took on the role of apex predators.

Conquering the Earth Carnotaurus

In this short video (duration a little under eight minutes), a Schleich Carnotaurus dinosaur model is unwrapped and put on the display turntable. The narrator discusses the model and highlights some of the features, including how it reminds him of another Carnotaurus figures that came out as merchandise from earlier “Jurassic Park/Jurassic World” dinosaur movies.

The video review gives model collectors the opportunity to see this very unique dinosaur model up close. The model has a very distinctive skull, a point emphasised in the video. The narrator comments on the simple but effective colour scheme and praises the wet, glossy look of the eye that helps to animate this figure. The rows of neck plates and other osteoderms are mentioned, although, the spokesperson for JurassicCollectables does not comment on the distinct overbite depicted on this short-skulled dinosaur.

A Video Showcasing the Rebor “Raptors”

In response to popular demand, those highly talented people at JurassicCollectables have produced a video highlighting the range of “Raptors” that have been made by Rebor. In this highly informative video, the narrator takes the viewer on a tour of the numerous dromaeosaurid models including Velociraptors produced by Rebor. This is a chronological tour, not in terms of the geological age of the fossils, but a timeline that lists the order in which these replicas were produced.

As JurassicCollectables are big fans of the movie franchise “Jurassic Park/Jurassic World”, the figures, most of which are very reminiscent of the Velociraptors seen in the films, the narrator is able to discuss some of his favourite pieces.

A Timeline of Rebor Velociraptors and Utahraptors

In this video review, which lasts a little over thirteen minutes, the first replica to be discussed is “Windhunter”, the Utahraptor figure (Utahraptor ostrommaysorum), which ironically is geologically much older than the Velociraptors depicted in the video.

The Rebor replicas have proved to be so popular, as not only are they excellent sculpts, but they remind collectors of the Velociraptors from the film franchise. Some of the Rebor models pay tribute to Stanley “Stan” Winston, the American television and film special make-up effects creator responsible for the majority of the dinosaurs seen in the early “Jurassic Park” films. This explains some of the names chosen by Rebor such as the baby Velociraptor figure “Stan” and the 1:18 scale cursorial replica “Winston”, which the narrator heralds as one of his personal favourites.

Bronze Effects

It is not only the people behind the films that are honoured by this part of the Rebor range. When the first film in the dinosaur-themed franchise came out, “Jurassic Park”, in 1993, a series of limited-edition bronze dinosaur models were cast. Rebor produced their own limited-edition “Raptors” the bronze-effect “Father and Son” figures which were based on the “Winston and Stan” Velociraptor replicas. In the video, the commentator points out the superb detailing on these figures and even highlights the areas on the models where the bronze-effect has been given a greenish tinge, to mimic the metal as it ages.

“Spike Lizard” – Reviewed

In this video, which lasts a little over eight and half minutes, the narrator takes the viewer on a tour of the features of this substantial model. The CollectA data card that accompanies the figure is also discussed, it is true that this iconic dinosaur was named in 1913. Styracosaurus (S. albertensis) was named and described by the famous Canadian palaeontologist and geologist Lawrence Lambe, it is one of a number of prehistoric animals described by Lambe from fossils found in the Canadian Province of Alberta.

The video focuses on the incredibly detailed skull and stunning array of spikes. The photography is supported by clear oratory, as the speaker comments on the various features that this model possesses. Just like the figure itself, there is plenty of detail, note is made of the high gloss effect on the orbit, giving the eye a realistic wet look.

A Glorious Head Sculpt

Given the fact that this Late Cretaceous ornithischian had one of the most elaborate frills of any horned dinosaur, it is only natural that the video review should dwell on the skull and jaws. This figure is described as having a “glorious head sculpt” and in the video, the viewer is given the opportunity to view this beautifully painted head from a variety of angles. The edentulous (toothless) beak is discussed and comments are made as to the finish on the spectacular horn and spikes.

Subtle Variation in the Skin Colouration on the CollectA Deluxe Styracosaurus

The video is well-lit enabling the viewer to get close views of the clever subtleties in skin tone and colour variations on the model. The range of different sized scales on the figure are demonstrated and the commentator reports that this is a very realistic looking dinosaur.

This figure has proved to be very popular amongst collectors and Styracosaurus itself remains one of the most instantly recognisable of all the dinosaurs. Great to see the classic, green standing Tyrannosaurus rex model used as a comparison, these two figures work really well together.

Not sure how successful the Styracosaurus replica would be as a book end, as suggested by the narrator in one part of this highly entertaining and informative video.

Wonderful Painting and Amazing Detail

The narrator comments that the Rebor Velociraptor models, especially “Gunn” are very reminiscent of the Velociraptors depicted in the Jurassic Park III film, which came out in 2001. The pose reminded the video presenter of the pouncing Velociraptor scene in which a pack of these dinosaurs try to grab a person who is hanging from a tree branch. In the video, the beautiful paint scheme is discussed, and the narrator comments on the multiple washes and subtle tones that have been used to colour this replica. Whilst the Rebor “Gunn” is being reviewed, viewers are given the chance to see “Gunn” and “Rose” together and what an attractive pair they make.

The JurassicCollectables presenter states that these two Velociraptors “compliment each other really well”. He states that they are “gorgeous looking Raptors”.

Red Feet – Is that Blood?

During this most informative and helpful video review, the narrator demonstrates that the underside of the feet of “Gunn” are coloured a reddish hue. Rebor certainly make top quality replicas and the attention to detail is amazing. When the model is turned upside down the underside of the feet with their intriguing colouration and fine texture are revealed. The commentator implies that the colouration could have come about as the dinosaur has been standing in the blood and gore from a recent pack kill. At Everything Dinosaur, we are unable to offer an explanation ourselves, but it does give us the opportunity to show the underside of the model revealing the exquisite detail.

Rebor Replicas and Jurassic Park III

The JurassicCollectables video review lasts a little over twelve minutes and it is great to see both Rebor “Gunn” and “Rose” shown together. In addition, the video also compares the earlier Rebor “Winston” with their latest figure “Gunn”. The narrator makes an excellent point about these Rebor figures working well with the classic “Jurassic Park” models.

Great for Dinosaur Dioramas

Rebor has produced several Velociraptor models over the last eighteen months or so. The video review shows both “Gunn” and “Rose” compared to “off colour Alan”, as well as highlighting the hatching Velociraptor blind box series made by Rebor. The narrator explains that these models with their different, contrasting poses would be great for use in dinosaur dioramas. Fortunately, the JurassicCollectables YouTube channel includes video reviews of all the Rebor “Raptors”, so viewers can see the full range of these Rebor figures.

A Review of the Rebor “Rose” Velociraptor Figure by JurassicCollectables

Those clever and talented people at JurassicCollectables have posted up another Rebor replica review. The latest video features the Rebor Velociraptor named “Rose”, a representation of a female “raptor”, one of a pair of figures (one male, one female) introduced by Rebor last month. These videos are a splendid way for dinosaur fans and model collectors to get a good look at any potential acquisition. As well as showing the model, the narrator highlights key features and also compares the figure to other similar replicas, so collectors can gain an appreciation of its size and scale.

Rebor “Winston”, Rebor “Pete” and Rebor “Rose”

The narrator praises the figures calling them “lovely sculpts with lovely paint jobs”. The Rebor female raptor “Rose” is compared with the recently reviewed Velociraptor “Pete” and a third Rebor Velociraptor replica “Winston”. In the video, the skull shape and eyes of the Rebor “Winston” and the new “Rose” are carefully considered and the viewer is treated to a detailed inspection of the differences between the skulls and the eyes of these two models.

The female Velociraptor is depicted in a squatting position, as if the animal is resting and the points of articulation are discussed. This Rebor replica has an articulated lower jaw as well as poseable forearms. The exquisite colouration and details of the scales on the body are reviewed and commented upon.

A Pack of “Raptors”

In this carefully made video, JurassicCollectables have included a review of the packaging. The back of the Rebor “Rose” box shows the range of Rebor Velociraptor figures in 1:18 scale that have been made so far. With Rebor, dinosaur fans and model collectors have a wonderful opportunity to build their own pack of dromaeosaurids, very reminiscent of the Velociraptors seen in the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World film franchises.

It is good to see the various Rebor models and figures shown together. Viewers can get an appreciation of potential dinosaur dioramas when the likes of Rebor “Winston” and the dynamic leaping Rebor “Spring heeled Jack” are included in the same video. Rebor is certainly building a strong reputation for its 1:18 scale figures.

Rebor Velociraptor Models

In terms of new scale models, collectors are going to have to wait until April before there are more Rebor releases. However, collectors and model fans have plenty to enjoy in the current range and these excellent video reviews by JurassicCollectables really show these figures in superb detail. Look out for the cameo appearance of “off-colour Alan” towards the end of this fifteen-minute review. He appears just after the “tale of the tape” when Rose is measured. The narrator makes a very good point, the Rebor 1:18 scale raptor range works very well in terms of scale with the original Jurassic Park models and figures.

A Video Review of the Mojo Fun Brachiosaurus Dinosaur Model

JurassicCollectables have produced another fascinating video review of a dinosaur model. This time, it is the Mojo Fun Brachiosaurus model that is put into the spotlight.

Mojo Fun was formed in 2009 with the objective of creating enjoyable and accurate model figures. The “Prehistoric & Extinct” range contains a wide range of dinosaurs, prehistoric animals and recently extinct creatures. This model range helps to highlight the link between extinctions of the past and the plight of many animals today and it includes replicas of animals such as the Tasmanian Tiger and the Quagga, animals that largely due to the actions of our own species, have become extinct.

The Mojo Fun Brachiosaurus Dinosaur Figure

In this short video review, the narrator compares the Mojo Fun Brachiosaurus with the brachiosaurids seen in the original “Jurassic Park” film, released in 1993. The model is described as being “desk top size”, it is an ideal size for creative, imaginative play, yet retains enough detail to make it the target of model collectors.

Various features of the model are highlighted. The skin texture is commented upon as is the paintwork around the eye, the use of shiny, glossy paint for the eye is praised. The model represents a traditional view of a macronarian sauropod and we particularly appreciated the comments about the skin creases that have been incorporated into the model.

Reference to a Deleted Scene in “Jurassic Park”

“Off-colour Alan” provides a useful scale reference and the narrator comments that this figure resembles the Brachiosaurs that were to be included in a scene featuring these dinosaurs that was left on the cutting room floor when it came to piecing together the original “Jurassic Park” movie. The Mojo Fun dinosaurs do seem to have been heavily influenced by the CGI dinosaurs from the “Jurassic Park” franchise and this makes them ideal for film fans who are trying to re-create mini-scenes from their favourite movie.

Measuring Dinosaur Models

One of the features of a video review by JurassicCollectables is the measuring of the model. Providing the “vital statistics” of a brachiosaur might be quite a tricky business, but JurassicCollectables cope admirably and providing a size guide helps model collectors to get a better idea of the scale of any figure. It was also great to see the recently reviewed, new for 2017 Mojo Fun Hunting T. rex model also included in the video review. It too, provides a helpful guide to scale and size.

A Review of the Papo Dimorphodon Figure by JurassicCollectables

We are in the middle of “dinovember”, a time of the year when model fans showcase their prehistoric animal figures. How appropriate then, for those talented people at JurassicCollectables to bring out a video review of the Early Jurassic pterosaur Dimorphodon. This is a very informative and well-made video review of a Papo, new for 2017, prehistoric animal model. The Papo Dimorphodon model was one of the last of the new for 2017 releases, but it was well worth the wait and this excellent video really does this flying reptile figure justice.

The Papo Dimorphodon Model

Dimorphodon was a flying reptile, a member of the long-tailed pterosaurs. The narrator highlights the tail on the replica in this enjoyable video review, describing the colour scheme as very “lemur-like”. He goes on to praise the design team at Papo for making figures that have lots of natural colours and that reflect what is seen in animals alive today.

Two species of Dimorphodon have been recognised, the first to be described was a specimen found in England (by the famous fossil hunter Mary Anning). A second species is known from Mexico. The video gives viewers the chance to see the well-painted skull in glorious detail and comments are made about the way in which Papo depict the eyes on their figures. There is even time to admire the articulated jaw, showing those different-sized teeth, that gave this genus of Early Jurassic flying reptile its name.

Comparing the Papo Dimorphodon to Other Papo Prehistoric Animals

A great thing about this JurassicCollectables video review is that model collectors can compare the Papo Dimorphodon to several other Papo models, all of which have been previously reviewed on the JurassicCollectables YouTube channel. In this video, the viewer is treated to comparisons with the new Papo young Spinosaurus replica along with the Archaeopteryx, Pteranodon and the Papo Tupuxuara. Poor, “off-colour Alan”, does not fare well, the Dimorphodon is shown attacking him and the video ends with the flying reptile balanced on his shoulders.

The YouTube channel of JurassicCollectables provides a comprehensive resource for prehistoric animal and dinosaur model reviews. The videos are skilfully produced and provide viewers with the chance to examine prehistoric animal figures very close-up.

The video is just under twelve minutes in length and it contains a wealth of material on this 2017 Papo edition and the French company is praised for producing figures with naturalistic and earthy tones with amazing detail, especially around the eye socket.

It is always a pleasure to see reviews of Pterosaurs, especially a flying reptile with an affinity with the British Isles such as Dimorphodon. We look forward to viewing the videos produced by JurassicCollectables when the new for 2018 Papo figures become available.
