Papo Juvenile Spinosaurus Video Review

Thanks to Everything Dinosaur, those clever people at JurassicCollectables have been able to get a close look at the Papo juvenile Spinosaurus, a figure that is currently paired with the excellent Papo Ceratosaurus in a special edition box set. A video review of this figure, plus information about the box set has been posted up on the JurassicCollectables YouTube channel and this is a great way for dinosaur fans and collectors to get a really good view of this new Papo dinosaur replica.

The Papo model range continues to grow and team members at Everything Dinosaur already know what is likely to be introduced next year, however, the fate of the young Spinosaurus model featured in this video remains uncertain and the only way to get one at the moment is via this special edition box set.

Papo Juvenile Spinosaurus Reviewed

In a departure from the usual green studio layout, JurassicCollectables have opted to use the white-out effect of a photography booth. The focus is therefore, very much on the figure and the detail can be highlighted more easily. Once again, we praise the camera work and the clear narration, in what is quite a lengthy video, it runs for just over 13 minutes. However, the slightly longer format permits the narrator to provide more information on the model, enables a comparison to be made with other Papo Spinosaurus figures and permits “off-colour Alan” to make his customary guest appearance.

Subtle Colours Identify the Figure as a Young Animal

Papo have taken care to give their juvenile Spinosaurus, hints of the more strident colours found in the large, adult Spinosaurus figure. The narrator in the video points out the subtle colours found on the sail-like structure of this dinosaur. In the adult Papo Spinosaurus, these colours are more prominent. The use of colour in this way enables Papo to distinguish between a fully grown adult dinosaur and this, a figure of a juvenile. The smudges of yellow paint, found along the back and down the tail help to reinforce the idea that this dinosaur has not quite reached maturity yet and has not attained its full adult colouration.

Comparing Papo Spinosaurs

JurassicCollectables have to be congratulated for including the large Spinosaurus model from Papo in this video review of the juvenile Spinosaurus. The narrator picks up on the significance of the chosen paint scheme and also contrasts this 2017 figure with the Spinosaurus model from the mini dinosaurs tub also made by Papo. The use of the white background allows for some really close-up detailed shots of the various replicas. For example, the very fine teeth are commented upon and the great range of scales depicted on the juvenile are discussed.

It is a pity that we could not see more of the Ceratosaurus model, which also features in this special edition box set. However, JurassicCollectables has already produced a comprehensive overview of this figure, which can be viewed here: JurassicCollectables Reviews the Papo Ceratosaurus.

A Very Well Balanced and Stable Model

The dynamic pose of the juvenile dinosaur is discussed, the narrator commenting on the stability of the figure, comments are also made about the bony ornamentation seen above the eyes and the detail found inside the jaw (the jaw is articulated and in the video, the gape of the dinosaur is demonstrated).

Mammuthus trogontherii

First described in 1885, the Steppe Mammoth (Mammuthus trogontherii), is thought to be one of the largest Mammoth species to have ever lived. Body mass estimates vary but some palaeontologists calculate that males of this species, which was a member of the Elephantidae family, could have weighed around fourteen tonnes, that’s heavier than seven Aston Martin DB9 sports cars. The narrator does not use this snippet of information, (it came up during an Everything Dinosaur product meeting about this new replica), but there is certainly of plenty of amazing information provided in this short (5:19) video review.

Steppe Mammoth Video Review

JurassicCollectables outline how the model was produced. This beautiful 1:40 scale replica is based on an almost complete Steppe Mammoth skeleton from northern China that was studied by Eofauna Scientific Research team members. The skeletal measurements were then scaled up to the largest individual specimen found to date, a more fragmentary specimen from Mosbach, in the north of Baden-Württemberg, (Germany).

The wonderfully detailed skull, shown in all its glory in this well-crafted video review, is based on a skull from Novosibirsk, Russia. A three-dimensional prototype was moulded and then printed out, muscles and skin were added, using extant elephants as the template. This is a scientifically accurate model and in the JurassicCollectables video review, the viewer is given plenty of opportunity to explore this model and to marvel at the scientific detail.

The latest video review from JurassicCollectables has been posted up and it features the wonderful Papo Cave Bear model. This replica is one of two prehistoric mammals being added to the Papo “Les Dinosaures” model range this year. The Smilodon replica has been delayed, so for the time being we have this Ursus spelaeus figure to admire. In this short video review, (it lasts just under three minutes), the narrator takes us on a tour of this beautifully painted Papo model.

The Papo Cave Bear Model

It is great to see another prehistoric mammal added to the Papo range, especially after the retirement of the Woolly Rhino figure a couple of years ago and the recent news that the Papo baby Woolly Mammoth is going out of production*. The JurassicCollectables video displays the quality of the paintwork and attention to detail on this model. Thanks to “off-colour Alan” and a handy Tyrannosaurus rex, this video provides a good idea of the model’s size and scale.

The narrator talks about the distinctive sloping forehead of Ursus spelaeus that helps to distinguish this model from more ubiquitous models of Brown Bears (Ursus arctos). He also explains about some of the problems that can occur when trying to sculpt realistic looking fur on models of large mammals.

The Powerfully Built Cave Bear

Becoming extinct as recently as 24,000 years ago, the Cave Bear would have been known to the people of the Late Pleistocene. It was a powerfully built animal, but not the largest bear that ever lived, a common misconception. True, a fully grown, male might have weighed as much as one tonne and when it reared up on its strong hind legs it could have stood more than 3.3 metres high, but the fossil remains of a South American Short-faced Bear (Arctotherium angustidens) indicate that this animal was much larger, weighing around 1.6 tonnes.

This time, it is the stunning “Alex DeLarge”, Rebor Velociraptor in 1:18 scale, that is in the spotlight. Rebor have been busy producing lots of “raptors” and as well as highlighting the features of “Alex”, this clever video review includes comparisons with other Rebor Velociraptor models, including “Spring-heeled Jack”, the 1:18 scale “Winston” and the juvenile “Stan”

In this short video, (duration 6:12), viewers are given the chance to have a really good look at this cleverly designed, Late Cretaceous, Asian dinosaur. The narrator discusses various aspects of “Alex DeLarge”, although the video does not give the explanation for this Velociraptor’s moniker. Alex DeLarge is the name of the violent protagonist in the novel “A Clockwork Orange” by Anthony Burgess which was published in 1962. The book was made into a film, directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1971.

Velociraptors of “Jurassic World”

It is apt for this particular Rebor model to be named after a character which has appeared in the cinema. Alex DeLarge, liked to wield a razor, reminiscent of the “killing claw” associated with these dinosaurs, in the book and the film, Alex DeLarge roamed the streets in a gang, social, pack-hunting behaviour has been proposed for Velociraptors too. The beautiful paint job on this particular Rebor replica is similar to the colouration of the Velociraptor called Blue which was seen in the recent dinosaur movie “Jurassic World”. Sadly, for “off-colour Alan” his encounter with this 1:18 scale replica does not end well!

It is great to see that JurassicCollectables have included other model and figure comparisons in their video review of the Rebor “Alex DeLarge” Velociraptor. Towards the end of the video, look out for a line-up of Rebor Velociraptors and a comparison between the Rebor King T. rex replica in 1:35 scale and this leaping Velociraptor figure. It is also helpful to see the model posed on both the two rods that are supplied with this replica as well as seeing how the arms fit into their sockets.

The close-up shot of the head and the views of the paintwork on the tail are very well done, nothing is out of focus and videos like this really do provide the best opportunity to view a model before deciding to purchase.

In this brief video review, (it lasts just over six and a half minutes), viewers are given the opportunity to have a really good look at this skilfully modelled Late Cretaceous theropod. The narrator discusses various aspects of “Spring-heeled Jack”, named after a strange being from English folklore that was first reported 180 years ago. For example, the video looks at the base of the model in detail and demonstrates the articulated jaw and the forelimbs that can be set in various positions.

“Jurassic Park” and Rebor Velociraptors

With the ground-breaking dinosaur movie “Jurassic Park”, hitting cinema screens in 1993, Velociraptors were up front and centre when it came to the prehistoric animals featured. We won’t open up the debate on the size of the “raptors” in the film, suffice to say, thanks to this movie and the work of Stan Winston, the American film and television special make-up and special effects master, a whole new generation of young dinosaur fans was created.

The Velociraptors in the Rebor replica range, pay tribute to the contribution played in the portrayal of dinosaurs by Stan Winston, that’s why a number of the models in this range carry his moniker. The leaping “Spring-heeled Jack” is reminiscent of the leaping Velociraptors from the Jurassic Park film franchise.

Papo Cryolophosaurus Video Review (JurassicCollectables)

Dinosaur model reviews are coming in thick and fast from JurassicCollectables. Today, we share their latest video review, a look out the new for 2017, Papo Cryolophosaurus dinosaur model. The Papo Cryolophosaurus is the last of the Papo dinosaur figures to be introduced this year, but it has been well worth the wait as the paint scheme and detailing on this figure is exquisite.

Papo Cryolophosaurus – Frozen Crested Lizard

Found on the slopes of Mount Kirkpatrick at an altitude of around 4,000 metres Cryolophosaurus (C. elloitti), an Early Jurassic dinosaur is one of the most unusual of all the Theropoda. The first fossils of this dinosaur were discovered during an expedition at the end of 1990/early 1991, during the Antarctic summer. The genus name was inspired by that remarkable bony crest and the fossil site location – the genus name translates as “frozen crested lizard”.

In this short video (duration 4:49), the narrator talks about the beautiful bony ridges on the skull that gave this dinosaur its name. The commentary includes details of the washes used to create such a glossy looking dinosaur. Although, during the time of Cryolophosaurus Antarctica was a considerable distance away from the South Pole, the climate would still have been harsh, but not as extreme as today.

The Cryolophosaurus material comes from the Hanson Formation, several other vertebrates are known from the Lower Jurassic strata. Cryolophosaurus shared its chilly forested world with pterosaurs, prosauropods and sauropods, cynodonts (mammal-like reptiles) and several other types of theropod.

Intriguingly, these rocks have yet to be fully mapped and explored and a number of fossil finds (including dinosaur remains) have yet to be formally described.

A Detailed Video Description

In the JurassicCollectables video review, the narrator provides a detailed description of this skilfully made dinosaur model. Particular attention is given to the skull sculpt including the detail on the inside of the mouth and the folds of skin on the neck, before the video shows the scales and other osteoderms that have been carefully crafted into the figure.

A Video Review of the Rebor Carnotaurus “Crimson King”

The latest JurassicCollectables video to be posted is a review of the spectacular “Crimson King”, the Rebor Carnotaurus (C. sastrei), 1:35 scale dinosaur model. Rebor has continued to set the standard when it comes to 1:35 scale theropods and this new Carnotaurus joins Acrocanthosaurus, Ceratosaurus, Yutyrannus, Utahraptor, T. rex, Velociraptor and Deinonychus in the Rebor replica range.

The Rebor Carnotaurus Model

In this short review, (the video lasts a fraction over six minutes), viewers are given the opportunity to have a really good look at this skilfully modelled South American dinosaur. The narrator discusses various aspects of this dinosaur model. For example, he points out the care and attention to detail revealed by the sculpted roof of the mouth and that amazing coloured tongue. The articulated jaw and front limbs are demonstrated and the lava field base is also shown and commented upon.

Carnotaurus – “Meat-eating Bull”

When the fossilised remains of a single, individual specimen was discovered in the mid 1980s, palaeontologists were very puzzled. This theropod from Argentina, was unlike any other dinosaur that scientists had described at the time. It ended up being assigned to its own family, the Abelisauridae, along with Abelisaurus (A. comahuensis). The skin impressions, found in association with the Carnotaurus specimen, provided the researchers with some of the best-preserved dinosaur skin samples that had been discovered.

The blunt snout and the thin lower jaw suggested that this dinosaur had a unique hunting strategy. The skull seemed too lightly built to cope with struggling prey, however, at an estimated eight metres in length, Carnotaurus was very probably an apex predator, although it can’t be ruled out that this dinosaur was a specialised scavenger, relying on the kills of other dinosaurs. In the JurassicCollectables video, the Rebor Tenontosaurus corpse (Ceryneian Hind) is used to provide scale for the figure.

The genus name was erected as this dinosaur has two prominent horns above its eyes. These horns stuck out sideways and reminded the scientists of the horns of a cow. It is not known what these horns were for, it has been speculated that they could have shown maturity, or perhaps they played a role in visual displays. Mojo Fun Red Hunting T. rex Reviewed by JurassicCollectables

In a first for the YouTube channel of JurassicCollectables, a video review of a Mojo Fun dinosaur model has been posted up. The figure reviewed is the new for 2017, Mojo Fun red hunting Tyrannosaurus rex and in this brief video (it lasts around four minutes), dinosaur fans are given a guided tour of one of the newest models in the Mojo Fun “Prehistoric & Extinct” range.

Reviewing a Mojo Fun Dinosaur Model

The company was founded in 2009 and the range of figures and replicas has grown steadily ever since. Today, there are over thirty models in the Mojo Fun “Prehistoric & Extinct” series and it is fitting for JurassicCollectables to start their association with this company by producing a video review of one of the hunting T. rex dinosaur models, as these figures are proving to be very popular with Everything Dinosaur’s customer base.

Although, this video review focuses on “red”, a number of Papo dinosaurs feature, helping to provide a useful comparison. Also, look out for a regular appearance by “off-colour Alan”, he even tries riding on the back of the Mojo Fun model.

Mojo Fun Prehistoric and Extinct Figures

Mojo Fun has produced several Tyrannosaurus rex figures, the range includes a juvenile T. rex plus a 1:40 scale version, along with a green painted, hunting T. rex figure.

Matthew the Dinosaur King’s YouTube channel has nearly 150 dinosaur and prehistoric animal themed videos on it. In the last few days, two new videos have been posted, both reviews of new for 2017 CollectA Prehistoric Life models. Matthew has provided a video review of the Chinese basal stegosaurid Gigantspinosaurus and the English Jurassic marine reptile Excalibosaurus and both videos are extremely informative.

Matthew’s YouTube channel has over 6,000 subscribers (that’s awesome) and we at Everything Dinosaur enjoy seeing the various prehistoric animal reviews and other items that the enthusiastic channel owner posts up. It is a great channel for fans of dinosaurs and dinosaur model collecting.

The CollectA Gigantspinosaurus Model (CollectA Prehistoric Life Series)

In the Gigantspinosaurus video, which lasts a little over five minutes, viewers are given the opportunity to have a really good look at this exotic member of the Thyreophora. It is one of a number of armoured dinosaurs that have been added to the CollectA Prehistoric Life model series over the years, it is good to see such a wide variety of armoured dinosaurs in the range.

The narrator pays special attention to those amazing parascapular spines, although the anatomical position of these huge “comma-like” spines is still debated and their exact purpose open to some speculation, most palaeontologists would agree with the way in which these structures are portrayed in the CollectA model. All praise to the video maker for taking time out to show the detail on the small head, including on the inside of the mouth. In the video, the colour scheme is commented upon, like the narrator, we at Everything Dinosaur like the choice of colours.

In this short video (duration 3:43), the narrator provides information about when this bizarre marine reptile lived, how big it was and where its fossils have been found. The CollectA Excalibosaurus model is then reviewed with the model being shown at lots of different angles so that would-be collectors can get a good look at this replica.

The CollectA Deluxe Pliosaurus

Towards the end of the video the CollectA Deluxe Pliosaurus model is introduced to provide a size comparison. It’s helpful when various models are compared side by side, although for the Excalibosaurus in this case, it does not end well, with the narrator placing the figure in the jaws of the giant Pliosaurus.

Videos like these permit fans of prehistoric animal models and figures to discuss their collection, to highlight the details in certain models and to inform and educate the viewers about what scientists have deduced about these long extinct animals from their fossils. JurassicCollectables have produced another very informative video of a Papo, new for 2017, prehistoric animal figure. This time, the armoured Polacanthus takes centre stage and in this brief video review (duration 4:08), dinosaur model fans have the opportunity to take a really good look at this model.

The Papo Polacanthus Dinosaur Model

Polacanthus is one of those iconic dinosaurs, an animal that would be well-known to most dinosaur enthusiasts, but there have not been too many replicas of this armoured dinosaur produced. Not need to worry, as Papo have gone a long way to making amends by producing a beautifully detailed sculpt, a model that although very much characteristic of Papo’s modelling style, provides enough accurate anatomical detail to keep even the most ardent dinosaur fan happy.

The narrator takes viewers on a guided tour of the Papo Polacanthus. Exquisite details are highlighted such as the careful sculpting and painting around the beak and comments are made about the lovely folds of skin down the legs and the great variation in the body scales and osteoderms that that model has.

That Famous Sacral Shield

The dermal armour is very well described and JurassicCollectables chose a novel way of showing off that beautiful characteristic sacral shield – a thick, fused plate of armour over the hips.

Regular cast member “off-colour Alan” uses the Polacanthus sacral shield as a saddle, this is a first for Everything Dinosaur members, we had not considered the sacral shield as a saddle before! Although, we would not recommend trying to ride a Polacanthus, these animals were certainly capable of carrying a person as indicated by their robust limb bones and wide hips, but in all likelihood, it would have been a very bumpy ride. Some of our American palaeontologist chums refer to the sacral shield as “the buckler”, perhaps they have theorised about the potential to use these particular members of the Thyreophora as transport!
