A YouTube Video Linking the Facebook Competition

The plan is to produce a video outlining the details of the book competition on Everything Dinosaur’s YouTube channel. The video can provide a short review of “Explorers of Deep Time” and give details on how to enter the contest to win a copy of the book.

“Explorers of Deep Time”

A script has been written for that part of the video that reviews “Explorers of Deep Time” by Roy Plotnick.

Here are the details:

Dedicated to Arnold and Mildred who we suspect were the author’s parents, the book is divided into four, carefully crafted general sections, each one exploring an element of what it is like to work in the Earth sciences.

For example, there is a chapter on working in the field, liberally sprinkled with contributions from an eclectic range of scientists and researchers at all stages of their careers who describe their own field work experiences. Roy’s enthusiasm for field work is skilfully reflected in his writing, after all, the chapter is entitled “Attending Marvels”.

Although there are black and white photos of fossils, this book is not about the fossils themselves but about the lives and careers of the people who collect them.

Chapter six entitled “Cool Toys” looks at the vast number of new research techniques and methodologies now used in palaeontology. Don’t expect numerous pictures, tables and diagrams, but interwoven into the narrative are lots of anecdotes from real scientists who discuss their experiences, their trials and triumphs as they pursue their careers.

Roy Plotnick concludes “Explorers of Deep Time” with a chapter headed “Last Thoughts”. In it he provides a S.W.O.T. analysis that looks at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats associated with pursuing a career path in palaeontology. An excellent ready reckoner for anyone considering working in the Earth sciences.

Roy Plotnick and "Old White Male" challenging stereotypes.

The author describing himself as an OWM (old, white male) writes about the need to encourage greater diversity in the Earth Sciences with increased access and appropriate support for women, minorities, the disabled and other groups that may feel excluded. Picture credit: Roy Plotnick (University of Illinois).

Picture credit: Roy Plotnick (University of Illinois)

Roy, who describes himself as an “Old, White Male” champions diversity and he ardently supports greater inclusiveness in science disciplines.

The book has been very well received amongst fellow academics, as demonstrated by the glowing reviews, some of which are featured on the back cover. Including one from the very talented Victoria Arbour, a world-renowned authority on armoured dinosaurs.

Explorers of Deep Time gets a big thumbs up from Everything Dinosaur.

Please note the competition is now closed!

New Rebor Saurophaganax Dinosaur Models in Stock

By |2024-10-27T12:28:52+00:00March 7th, 2022|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

The Rebor Saurophaganax maximus dinosaur models are in stock at Everything Dinosaur. This trio of terrific 1:35 scale dinosaur figures – “Jungle”, “Badlands” and “Volcanic Cavern” have arrived at Everything Dinosaur’s warehouse. Each figure has an articulated lower jaw, moveable arms and a flexible tail. The S. maximus replicas are supplied with a data card and an Everything Dinosaur Saurophaganax fact sheet.

A Trio of Colourful Theropods

These Rebor replicas represent one of the largest meat-eating dinosaurs known from the Late Jurassic. Size estimates vary, but Saurophaganax maximus is regarded as the biggest carnivore described to date from fossil material associated with the famous Morrison Formation. Some palaeontologists have suggested that this dinosaur could have reached 13 metres or more in length. The discovery of a femur (thigh bone) in New Mexico, which is more than a metre long and isolated teeth measuring in excess of 12 cm indicate that this member of the Allosauridae family was a formidable, super-sized predator.

Rebor Saurophaganax maximus “Notorious Big”

Rebor has nicknamed their Saurophaganax “Notorious Big”, perhaps in recognition of this dinosaur’s estimated size. The genus was originally erected based on observed differences in the shape of the backbones (vertebrae). Palaeontologists remain uncertain as to the validity of this genus, the fossil material could represent large Allosaurus individuals, after all, Allosaurus itself has become something of a taxonomic wastebasket and revision of fossil material has led to erection of a third species Allosaurus jimmadseni: A New Species of Allosaurus A. jimmadseni.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“It is wonderful to see a scale replica of Saurophaganax introduced to the Rebor range. Several theropods have been named from fossils found in Morrison Formation deposits, megalosaurs such as Torvosaurus and Marshosaurus, numerous species of Ceratosaurus plus other ceratosaurs too and of course, allosauroids. Of all these fearsome predators associated with the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation, Saurophaganax maximus is regarded by many palaeontologists as being the largest described to date.”

New Schleich Models Feature in Newsletter

By |2024-10-27T11:29:18+00:00March 5th, 2022|Categories: Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Newsletters, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

The five recently introduced Schleich prehistoric animal figures are featured in the latest Everything Dinosaur customer newsletter. There are four new dinosaurs – Styracosaurus, Majungasaurus, Amargasaurus and Parasaurolophus, plus Schleich have added a model of the fearsome marine reptile Nothosaurus. All these figures are now in stock, further increasing customer choice when it comes to Everything Dinosaur toys and dinosaur models. Schleich models are extremely popular with young dinosaur fans.

Many factories have had problems with production over the last two years due to the impact of the global pandemic on logistics and manufacturing. It is great news to see five new Schleich prehistoric animals.

The new for 2022 Schleich Styracosaurus dinosaur model features in the February Everything Dinosaur newsletter. This is the first new Styracosaurus to be introduced by Schleich since 2013.

Schleich Styracosaurus

The first new figure to feature in the Everything Dinosaur newsletter is the Styracosaurus, an updated replica of the Styracosaurus figure that was introduced by the German manufacturer nine years ago, but then retired in 2016. The hand-painted Schleich Styracosaurus dinosaur model measures a fraction under twenty centimetres in length and it has been praised by many dinosaur fans and model collectors for its attractive colouration and detailed skin texture.

Schleich may have produced replicas representing Carnotaurus in the past, in addition, they have made many replicas of sauropods too, but this is the first time that an Amargasaurus and a Majungasaurus have been included in the Schleich product portfolio. The Majungasaurus colouration has been commented upon by collectors. It has been suggested that the paint scheme chosen is reminiscent of the artwork for the “Dinosaur King” animated Majungasaurus from the Japanese computer game.

Schleich have made models representing Parasaurolophus in the past, they have also added replicas of marine reptiles such as Mosasaurus and Plesiosaurus to their model range, but this is the first time that a Nothosaurus figure has been introduced.

The model is expected to be in stock in the next few days and a free fact sheet has been prepared in readiness for the model’s arrival.

Konobelodon atticus

A gigantic and derived amebelodontid that represents the final evolutionary stage of the European shovel-tusker clade. Konobelodon is characterised by enormous body size, dorso-ventrally flattened mandibular tusks and very large, straight upper tusks. Its proboscidean lineage is ancestral to the true elephants (Elephantidae), including modern, living elephants and their extinct relatives the mammoths.

Konobelodon model

Originally named in 1857, Konobelodon atticus has had a long and complicated taxonomic history.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We are looking forward to the arrival of the Eofauna Konobelodon model. We are expecting this prehistoric animal model to arrive shortly along with the Eofauna Diplodocus carnegii replica, which is on the same shipment.”

The Everything Dinosaur website: Prehistoric Animal Models.

Originally Named Mastodon atticus

A large, left maxilla (upper jawbone), that was described by the famous German palaeontologist and zoologist Johann Andreas Wagner led to the erection of the species Mastodon atticus, in 1857. Wagner believed that this prehistoric elephant, fossils of which were found in Greece, was closely related to other European fossil elephants that had been studied by the influential French anatomist Georges Cuvier, who first used the term “Mastodon” to describe fossil elephants in 1806.

Everything Dinosaur team members have produced a short YouTube video highlighting the new for 2022 Schleich Amargasaurus dinosaur model. The video was posted up onto the company’s YouTube channel earlier today and is part of a project to help customers make informed purchase decisions by creating videos showcasing prehistoric animal models and figures.

New for 2022 Schleich Prehistoric Animal Models

In early 2022, Everything Dinosaur received five new prehistoric animal models that had been introduced by Schleich, there was a model of the Triassic marine reptile Nothosaurus and four dinosaurs namely Majungasaurus, Styracosaurus, Parasaurolophus and an Amargasaurus. All five of these new Schleich models featured in short YouTube videos, the first to be posted up was the Parasaurolophus model, the last new Schleich figure to be put into the video spotlight was the Amargasaurus model.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur explained that as the company physically stocked the models, storing them in their own warehouse, they could shoot short videos that highlighted the features of the replicas and figures giving potential customers the opportunity to view actual models rather than just relying on the manufacturer’s product images.

Videos Under 45 Seconds in Length

Tests were still being carried out to see how best to upload product showcase videos onto Everything Dinosaur’s website without the loading time of the site being compromised. Videos had been kept to a maximum length of around 45 seconds, permitting viewers to see the figure in plenty of detail. The models are placed on a turntable so that they can be viewed from various angles.

The video showcase highlights features such as the beautifully painted eye on the figure and the wonderful, intricate skin texture. Highlights that could be missed when relying solely on the images provided by Schleich.

The PNSO Xiaoqin the Tsintaosaurus dinosaur model is a replica of a Chinese hadrosaurid (T. spinorhinus) which was formally named and described in 1958 (Yang Zhongjian often referred to in western literature as Chung Chien Young). A member of the lambeosaurine sub-family, the shape and function of the dinosaur’s crest has been an area of much debate amongst palaeontologists. The design team at PNSO have opted to give their figure a hatchet-shaped crest, reminiscent of the crest of Lambeosaurus, to which Tsintaosaurus was distantly related.

New Schleich Prehistoric Animal Models in Stock

The new for 2022 Schleich Majungasaurus, Styracosaurus and the Nothosaurus marine reptile model are in stock at Everything Dinosaur. All five of the recently announced new Schleich prehistoric animal models are now available from the UK-based mail order company.

The Schleich Majungasaurus

The stout Majungasaurus model, with its stubby front limbs and deep skull is a welcome addition to the Schleich range of dinosaur models. This is the first time that Schleich have made a replica of the Late Cretaceous abelisaurid from Madagascar, although they have made several models of the related Carnotaurus.

The Schleich Majungasaurus has a prominent horn on the top of its head, an anatomical feature that reflects the fossil record for this theropod, although when first found, the frontal horn was thought to represent the fossilised remains of a pachycephalosaur. The striped colour scheme is certainly striking and this figure has an articulated lower jaw.

Schleich Styracosaurus Dinosaur Model

Our personal favourite of the recent Schleich model releases is the Styracosaurus dinosaur model. Painted in muted shades of green and brown it contrasts with the more vibrant Majungasaurus figure. This is not the first time that Schleich have produced a Styracosaurus figure. There was a Styracosaurus in the original and long-retired “Saurus” series and in 2013, a blue-coloured Styracosaurus was introduced, marking the centenary of the formal naming and scientific description of “spiked lizard”.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that a future blog post would look at these Schleich Styracosaurus models in more detail.

Schleich Nothosaurus Marine Reptile Model

The only non-avian dinosaur model to be added to the Schleich “Dinosaurs” range is a replica of the Triassic marine reptile Nothosaurus. The model measures 22 cm in length. It joins a replica of a Plesiosaurus and a Mosasaurus in the Schleich range.

This is the first time that Schleich has made a Nothosaurus figure and although this genus has an extensive fossil record as well as a global distribution with fossil discoveries in Asia, North Africa, the Middle East as well as Europe, there are very few Nothosaurus models in the portfolios of mainstream model manufacturers.

An Exclusive Schleich Parasaurolophus Video Showcase

By |2024-10-26T11:29:29+01:00February 12th, 2022|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Product Reviews|0 Comments

The latest product video to be posted up on the Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel features the recently introduced, new for 2022 Schleich Parasaurolophus dinosaur model. This figure is one of five new prehistoric animal figures announced so far by the German model manufacturer. The Parasaurolophus dinosaur model is the first Schleich figure to be given a product showcase video by Everything Dinosaur.

Video credit: Everything Dinosaur

Model Measurements and Did this Dinosaur Live in China?

In the short video (it lasts around 45 seconds), viewers have the opportunity to observe the Parasaurolophus figure on a revolving turntable, model measurements are provided and a caption pops up explaining that this lambeosaurine is known from North America. A second caption follows shortly afterwards that indicates that this hadrosaur may have lived on two continents as very similar fossils to those associated with the Parasaurolophus genus have been found in Heilongjiang Province (China).

The new for 2022 Schleich Parasaurolophus dinosaur model. Although mainly associated with strata laid down during the Campanian faunal stage of the Late Cretaceous of North America, fossils from younger rocks (Maastrichtian stage) in north-eastern China suggest that Parasaurolophus may have lived in Asia and persisted until the very end of the Cretaceous.

Previous Parasaurolophus Models

Schleich has made replicas of Parasaurolophus before. One of the original figures in the long retired Schleich “Saurus” series was a green Parasaurolophus. Another Parasaurolophus figure was introduced by the German manufacturer in 2007.

Highlighting Product Features

The product video showcase is designed to highlight features and show more detail. Whilst images provided by the manufacturer and indeed photographs taken by Everything Dinosaur team members do help, a short video can give potential purchasers an excellent view of the prehistoric animal figure and help them to make a more informed purchase decision.

The Rebor Club Selection: Meta the Hatchling Deinosuchus (swamp variant) video showcase, lasts a little over 40 seconds. The total number of models made in this series is stated along with the replica’s measurements. The unique number on the base of the model is highlighted along with the Rebor packaging.

The 2021 limited edition Rebor Club Selection: Meta the hatchling Deinosuchus polystone replica (swamp colour variant).

A Collectable Crocodile Figure

The Rebor Deinosuchus replica in the swamp colour variant is one of two versions available. The other version is the estuary version, which has already featured in an Everything Dinosaur product video showcase. Both limited-edition figures are highly collectable and when current stocks sell out, these models will not be put back into production.

As with the estuary colour variant, Everything Dinosaur will include a free Deinosuchus fact sheet with sales of this excellent figure from its website.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“This is the second Deinosuchus product video showcase, the YouTube video featuring the estuary variant was posted up a few days ago. Over the last few weeks, we have made a number of product video showcases that highlight Rebor models. Whilst we can’t put up videos of every single replica in the Rebor range we hope that the short videos that we have made provide customers with more information and allow them to appreciate the high level of detail associated with the Rebor range.”
