Co-owner of Everything Dinosaur Sue, is keen to champion the role of women in business. Recently, we hosted a young student on work experience. She helped with the picking and packing of orders. In addition, she worked on some social media posts and videos. This week, Sue met up with South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce Team members Jane Booth and Courtney Dodd. The Chamber team members wanted to learn more about the company’s international sales.

For Jane, the Export Document Administrator and Courtney Dodd (Business Administrator) at the Chamber it was an opportunity to see first-hand how Chamber membership had benefitted the business and assisted in the development of sales overseas.

Sue commented that she welcomed the continuing dialogue with the Chamber and outlined how these meetings enabled Chamber personnel to gain a better understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by women in business.

Empowering Women in Business

The visit also highlighted the importance of empowering women in business. As Sue admits, the business of selling dinosaurs is essentially a male-dominated industry. However, her success in this niche market might help to inspire other female entrepreneurs.

Sue thanked Jane and Courtney for their input.  She explained that Everything Dinosaur was proud to support the Chamber’s initiatives to foster the growth and success of women-owned businesses.

Team members at Everything Dinosaur have produced a Diprotodon scale drawing.  The scale drawing has been prepared for a fact sheet on the largest marsupial known to science.  The fact sheet will be sent out with sales of the new CollectA Deluxe Diprotodon figure.

The CollectA Deluxe Diprotodon Model

The CollectA Deluxe Diprotodon model is due to arrive later this week.  Collectors have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this male Diprotodon figure.  The model measures a fraction under twenty-one centimetres in length.  It is around twelve centimetres tall, and it has a declared scale of 1:20.

The CollectA figure probably represents the type species Diprotodon optatum which was the first Australian fossil mammal to be scientifically described and named (Owen 1838).

Numerous species have been erected, essentially due to the great size differences observed in fossil specimens of adults.  In addition, Diprotodon was the most widespread of the Australian megafauna.  Fossils remains have been found all over Australia and this led to the assumption (probably incorrect), that several different species evolved.  Unlike its probable closest living relative the wombat, Diprotodon was sexually dimorphic.  Males were considerably bigger than females.  It had been assumed that the different sized adult fossils represented separate species.  However, it is now thought that the largest specimens represent male Diprotodon optatum.

Did Diprotodon Live in Extensive Herds or Small Family Groups?

Large numbers of Diprotodon fossils have been found in sediments representing lakebeds and river deposits. At one time, Diprotodon was thought to have been aquatic. However, the fossil accumulations probably represent groups that died together during a severe drought or were drowned when trying to cross a swollen river.

Diprotodon is thought to be the only marsupial that seasonally migrated. These animals probably had to roam extensively in order to find enough food. There is some fossil evidence to indicate that these animals moved around in large herds. These large herds mostly consisted of females. This suggests that Diprotodon was a polygynous species. That is, a male controlled a harem of females. Juvenile males moved around in bachelor groups.

The jaws are extremely powerful. It has been suggested that the males engaged in intraspecific combat, perhaps fighting over mates or social status. The incisors were probably used to deliver deep bites onto the face and body of the opponent.

A few days ago, team members created a new image of PNSO figures for use on the Everything Dinosaur website.  This new image was to be used on the homepage as part of a revolving slide presentation.  The presentation would help to highlight the extensive range of dinosaur and prehistoric animal figures stocked by the company.  In addition, link buttons on the images could signpost visitors to specific model ranges and categories.

The new PNSO picture featured seven prehistoric animal models.  In an earlier post, we set a challenge, could you name all the figures?

Naming the PNSO Figures

We are often impressed by the product knowledge of collectors.  When Everything Dinosaur pose questions about dinosaur models, we always get lots of correct answers.  We were most impressed by the PNSO product knowledge demonstrated.

Everything Dinosaur team members have been busy preparing a new PNSO prehistoric animal model image for use on the company’s updated website.  The PNSO range has grown significantly over the last few years.  They continue to impress with the introduction of dinosaur and prehistoric animal models.  For example, new figures for this year (2024) include Lufengosaurus, Baryonyx, Tyrannotitan and an updated Spinosaurus.  In addition, a spectacular Edmontosaurus (Zabad) and a beautiful Wuerhosaurus (Xilin) have been added.

A new image has been created to help highlight the extensive PNSO prehistoric animal model range.  The image (below) features seven different PNSO figures.  A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that they wanted the picture to include a marine reptile as well as a prehistoric shark.

The Extensive PNSO Prehistoric Animal Range

PNSO prehistoric animal models have proved to be extremely popular with fans of dinosaurs.  Model collectors have been able to build up quite a collection. The PNSO range features popular prehistoric animals but also, some of the more obscure creatures from the fossil record too.

The Limited-edition Category

This is a new category for Everything Dinosaur.  It has gone live on the company website at the same time as another new category entitled “Retired or Rare”.  Limited-edition figures have become an increasing part of many manufacturer’s product offerings. There is a growing demand for rare and exclusive collectables, and prehistoric animal figures are no exception.  Limited-edition figures have been introduced by the likes of Rebor, Nanmu Studio and Beasts of the Mesozoic.

Furthermore, it helps to inspire and encourage.  A brand personality refers to the set of human characteristics that are associated with a particular business. It is the personality that a brand projects to its target audience and consumers.  The objective of developing a distinct brand personality is to make the brand relatable, memorable, and appealing to the audience.  Carefully incorporating a unique brand personality is a vital part of creating an impressive “About Us” page.

Search engines such as Google are rumoured to be placing greater emphasis on rating web content based on how accessible it is to individuals with disabilities.  Everything Dinosaur team members are aware of the need to enhance website accessibility.

For many businesses the thought of having to redesign an on-line presence can be daunting.  Where do you start?  How do you ensure that you are following best practice?

How to Enhance Website Accessibility

Making a website more inclusive and accessible can be a challenge.  However, Everything Dinosaur team members are keen to enhance website accessibility and they want to make Everything Dinosaur. more user friendly and inclusive.

Many of our customers have additional needs and we wanted to make our web presence more accessible especially for those customers who might have a visual impairment.  A key aspect of website accessibility is maintaining sufficient contrast between the font colour and the background. Poor colour contrast can make text difficult to read, especially for individuals with visual impairments or other accessibility needs.

Fortunately, there is plenty of help on hand and team members at Everything Dinosaur have been utilising free software developed by the Utah State University to conduct a detailed audit of their website and to formulate easy to implement changes to enhance usability, make the site more inclusive and to improve accessibility.

Free Software

The software is known as WAVE and it can provide guidance to help businesses large and small to make their websites more inclusive.

Through the use of this free accessibility evaluation tools.  Team members were quickly able to identify those website elements such as images without alt text. Once corrected, this made the site much more user friendly for those visitors that rely on screen readers.

Changing the Site Contrast to Enhance Website Accessibility

The contrast ratio between the white font and the pale blue background of the Everything Dinosaur website was analysed, and the decision was made to change the background colour to a dark green.

This seemingly small change has had a significant impact on the user experience. The increased contrast allows site visitors, including those with visual impairments or other accessibility challenges, to easily read and engage with Everything Dinosaur’s content. By addressing this key accessibility factor, the company has taken an important step towards creating a more inclusive on-line presence.

Following Best Practice

Making sure that you are following best practice is essential.  Fortunately, the Utah State University software incorporates Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).  Users of this free tool can be confident that any changes made conform to the latest protocols.

Mike from Everything Dinosaur explained that considering the requirements of customers, especially those with additional needs does not have to be that daunting.

He added:

“Improving website accessibility benefits all site visitors.  Content that is easy to perceive and navigate is better for everyone. Removing barriers to access means that our website will be more inclusive and welcoming.  Some small changes can make a big difference.”

A New Everything Dinosaur Homepage

Team members have been working to improve site access for those in the community that have a visual impairment or use screen readers.  Font colours and background colours have been changed to make them easier to read.  Furthermore, the new homepage emphasises the company’s international credentials.  New pages have been created that provide information on international payment options, international deliveries and site security.

Website Additions and Improvements

New features on the homepage include more visible social media buttons and specific pages providing more information on worldwide delivery.  The customer account links remain, but there are new links to Feefo customer feedback and a link to provide a Google review.  The homepage slider has been refreshed with new slides added.  These slides feature Eofauna Scientific Research models as well as Rebor, PNSO and Haolonggood.

Further changes are planned.  They are all aimed at improving the experience of the user.
