Everything Dinosaur Adds Mojo Models

Everything Dinosaur is to add Mojo “Prehistoric and Extinct” models to the company’s already extensive product range. Mojo Fun models are coming into stock. The Mojo models are scheduled to go live on the Everything Dinosaur website in the middle of May, around week commencing 15th May. JurassicCollectables exclusively revealed that Mojo models were coming to Everything Dinosaur in a recent unboxing video posted up on their YouTube channel.

In this short, ten-minute video, the narrator discusses the contents of the latest parcel of prehistoric animals to be sent from Everything Dinosaur to JurassicCollectables – new for 2017 Papo models, the first batch of the 2017 CollectA replicas and in a scoop for this excellent YouTube channel, JurassicCollectables was able to reveal that the Mojo range had been added to Everything Dinosaur’s product portfolio. The Mojo dinosaur models include Triceratops, Parasaurolophus, Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, Spinosaurus and a new for 2017 Allosaurus.

Mojo Fun Models

Formed in 2009, Mojo has created an exciting range of animal and fantasy figures. In 2016, many of their existing models were given makeovers and new paint schemes ready for a re-launch this year. In addition, a number of new sculpts and prototypes were prepared in order to expand the company’s product range. Everything Dinosaur will be bringing into stock all thirty-one of the models in Mojo’s “Prehistoric and Extinct” animal model range, including the quite rare and hard to get prehistoric mammals such as the excellent Deinotherium model seen in the JurassicCollectables unboxing video.

In addition, new for 2017 Mojo dinosaurs will be available from Everything Dinosaur, including the wonderful Mojo Tyrannosaurus rex hunting (red) replica which led the narrator in the JurassicCollectables video to exclaim:

“The detail on this looks absolutely stunning” and “This looks amazing!”

Two versions of the large, hunting T. rex model will be available from Everything Dinosaur, the Mojo hunting T. rex (red) see picture above and JurassicCollectables video, plus a green version of this dinosaur model. In total, there will be six new Tyrannosaurus rex models, including a juvenile replica and a 1:40 scale T. rex.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We have been most impressed by the way that the Mojo range has developed and we are delighted to be able to add these new replicas to our inventory. In particular, it is great to see some of the more unusual prehistoric and extinct creatures featured. Re-writing the Apatosaurus Dinosaur Fact Sheet

At Everything Dinosaur, for the vast majority of the named prehistoric animal models we supply, we send out a fact sheet on that animal to accompany the sale. As a result, we have researched and written hundreds of fact sheets. From time to time, we have to update and amend these fact sheets to reflect changes in ideas about extinct animals and to incorporate new fossil evidence. It is time to re-write the Apatosaurus fact sheet.

The Apatosaurus Fact Sheet

The Apatosaurus fact sheet was first written in 2006, but it has undergone several revisions, just like the whole of the diplodocids. In the new, updated data sheet, we assert that Apatosaurus was closely related to Diplodocus and comment on the recently resurrected genus Brontosaurus being the sister taxon to Apatosaurus. A sister taxon or sister group, as it is sometimes termed, is used in classification to denote the very closest relatives of another taxon within the evolutionary tree.

Although several palaeontologists disagree with the findings of the 2015 paper that considered Brontosaurus a valid genus “A Specimen-level Phylogenetic Analysis and Taxonomic Revision of Diplodocidae (Dinosauria, Sauropoda)”, which was co-authored by Roger Benson of Oxford University), at Everything Dinosaur, we have amended our fact sheet to reflect the changes in the Diplodocidae family. In addition, back in 2014, a huge, two-metre-long femur (thigh bone), was discovered at the Mygatt-Moore Quarry (Mesa County, western Colorado).

Although, a number of Sauropod genera are associated with this famous dig site (Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation), the bone has been ascribed to Apatosaurus (species unknown) and this single bone discovery suggests that Apatosaurus may have been considerably bigger than the twenty-one to twenty-two-metre-long estimates of the past.

An Apatosaurus Illustration

Although we had a lot of Apatosaurus illustrations in our database, we chose to commission a new drawing based on the Papo Young Apatosaurus dinosaur model, which was introduced back in 2015. Apatosaurus was considerably more robust than Diplodocus and the Papo model, with its thick neck, showing well defined cervical vertebrae and robust limbs, contrasted nicely with our illustration of Diplodocus.

The Missing Apatosaurus Skull

Many skeletons of these animals are found with the skull missing and when Apatosaurus was first described it was given the short, deep, “box like” skull of a Camarasaurus. When a real Apatosaurus skull was scientifically described many years later, it was described as being very different from that of a camarasaurid. It was long and low with peg-shaped teeth positioned at the front of the mouth. The nostrils are located on the top of its head, this added weight to the argument that Apatosaurus lived in swamps where it could feed out of reach from predators with the water helping to support its great bulk. However, it is now believed that these animals were almost entirely terrestrial.

Papo Acrocanthosaurus and Papo Ceratosaurus in Stock

The new for 2017 Papo Acrocanthosaurus and Papo Ceratosaurus dinosaur models are now in stock at Everything Dinosaur. These two beautiful Papo dinosaur models with articulated lower jaws have just arrived at Everything Dinosaur’s warehouse, ahead of their official release date. This means that we are now stocking five, new 2017 Papo models – all of them dinosaurs.

Papo Dinosaur Models

The first five Papo models to be released this year into their “Les Dinosaures” range, just happen to all be dinosaurs, the models released so far:

Papo Polacanthus.
A Papo repainted Velociraptor (blue) with an articulated lower jaw.
Papo repainted Oviraptor (blue).
The Papo Acrocanthosaurus dinosaur model, complete with an articulated lower jaw.
Papo Ceratosaurus – this replica too, also has an articulated lower jaw.

The largest of the Papo models introduced into the dinosaur model range to date is the Papo Acrocanthosaurus. It measures an impressive twenty-eight centimetres long. That sinewy, serpentine tail is nearly sixteen centimetres in the air. It is the biggest Papo prehistoric animal model to be introduced this year.

The impressive and toothy-looking Ceratosaurus is very well painted. It has lots of teeth on show (perhaps the model represents the Ceratosaurus species C. dentisulcatus)? The Papo Ceratosaurus model measures around twenty centimetres in length and not including that large nasal horn, the model stands a fraction under nine centimetres high.

The first of the new for 2017 Papo dinosaur models are in stock at Everything Dinosaur. We have just received our first shipment of the new Papo Polacanthus dinosaur model, along with new versions of the Papo Oviraptor and the Papo Velociraptor replica.

Papo Polacanthus, Papo Blue Velociraptor and the Papo Blue Oviraptor

The Papo range continues to go from strength to strength and it is great to see a model of the armoured dinosaur Polacanthus included within the Papo product portfolio. The polacanthids are an enigmatic group of dinosaurs, with a lot of fossil material associated with discoveries made in the British Isles. Polacanthus seems to have been quite closely related to Gastonia (G. burgei) from the United States, both these dinosaurs had a plate of armour over their hips (sacral shield). Such a sacral shield can be clearly made out on the new Papo Polacanthus replica.

The Papo Blue Velociraptor

Dinosaur model collectors can have their very own pack of “raptors”, as this new blue painted version of Velociraptor joins the Papo range. The model is the same size as the Papo green Velociraptor that joined the range last year and it too has an articulated lower jaw. This is not a new model, but continues the trend from Papo and other manufacturers to produce re-painted versions of existing models. The original Velociraptor replica, has been retired, but its re-painted version is still going strong. This model was joined by the green painted Velociraptor in 2016. This replica will be retired shortly, the blue Velociraptor (although the models actually look quite purple), will effectively replace it.

The Papo Blue Oviraptor

One of the most colourful dinosaur models to be introduced this year is the re-painted version of the Papo Oviraptor. It still lacks feathers, but the new interpretation does at least demonstrate that some dinosaurs may have been keen to stand out from the crowd. That famous skull crest is a bright orange, this contrasts nicely with the metallic blue down the neck and over the back of the head. There is a blue flash that runs from the shoulder, along the flank, over the hips and ends near the tip of the tail.

As far as we can make out, even the egg that “egg thief” is carrying has been given a makeover. The eggs in our batch of models seem to be a little darker than those found with the original Papo Oviraptor model.

One thing is for sure, Papo’s own unique designs shine through and we look forward to receiving the next set of new for 2017 models shortly.

Taking Uintatherium Out on a Date

When Did Uintatherium anceps Live?

Everything Dinosaur is preparing for the imminent arrival of the new for 2017 CollectA “Prehistoric Life” models. The first batch will be arriving at our warehouse very soon, but we are in the process of finalising the fact sheets prior to arrival of other new editions to the CollectA range, due to come into stock later this year. One of the new fact sheets has left us scratching our collective heads, it concerns an ancient prehistoric mammal that has a reputation for stumping even the most talented and dedicated of palaeontologists.

The beastie is Uintatherium (U. anceps) to be more precise, our team members have been scanning the literature trying to pinpoint the approximate time in geological history that this particular species of “Uintah beast” roamed.

An Eocene Giant

Uintatherium is one of the more spectacular of a bizarre Order or extinct mammals called the Dinocerata (terrible horns). Along with the genus Eobasileus, Uintatherium represents one of the largest of this strange Order of mammals, an Order that palaeontologists can’t quite agree where to place amongst the Mammalia.

They are placentals, but their exact position on the mammal family tree and the taxonomic relationship to the other Orders remains controversial. Scientists such as Earl Manning and Donald R. Prothero have speculated that the simple cheek teeth of these animals might indicate an affinity with the ungulates (mammals with hooves). Other academics have suggested that the dentition (teeth), most closely resemble the teeth of the Mongolian rabbit relative Pseudictops. In this is the case, then the Uintatherium could be an example of a “huge horned bunny”!

Uintatheres and the Bone Wars

The role of these Eocene animals in the “Bone Wars” the disputes between the palaeontologists – Leidy, Marsh and Cope has been well documented, but what is not so clear, is when did Uintatherium, specifically U. anceps live? We have scanned the literature and we have found dates ranging from 53 million years ago to as recently as 37 million years ago. We doubt whether a single species could have persisted for this long, even in the most stable of environments, so, have you any information of when Uintatherium anceps roamed the Earth?

With a little luck (and a lot more research), we will be able to complete the Uintatherium data, the next fact sheet will have to prepare is a Brontothere. This “thunder beast” might have superficially resembled Uintatherium, but it was not that close related. However, the Brontotherium fact sheet is being put together as Everything Dinosaur will be bringing in a new line shortly, but more about that later…

Everything Dinosaur has added two Plesiosaurus soft toys to the company’s extensive range of prehistoric animal plush. The soft and cuddly marine reptiles join the likes of Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus rex in a move that we think famous fossil finders like Mary Anning and William Conybeare would have approved of.

The Plesiosaur Family (Plesiosauridae)

As every budding, young palaeontologist will tell you, plesiosaurs were not dinosaurs but marine reptiles. Plesiosaurus is the only genus in the family Plesiosauridae. During the 19th and 20th centuries, a large number of long-necked marine reptile fossils were assigned to the plesiosaur family. However, recent studies have led to a revision and several specimens that were once described as Plesiosaurus have been assigned to their own, separate genus.

It was the pioneering English geologist William Conybeare who first coined the term Plesiosaurus. He used this term back in 1821 and went onto describe the almost complete Plesiosaurus skeleton yet discovered. This specimen had been found eroding out of the cliffs at Lyme Regis by Mary Anning. The term plesiosaur pre-dates the term dinosaur as well as the first scientific description of a dinosaur (Megalosaurus in 1824).

Plesiosaurus Soft Toys “Near Lizard”

Plesiosaurus received its moniker as the academic establishment at the time concluded that it was more “lizard-like” than the recently discovered “fish lizard” Ichthyosaurus, a genus, which itself has seen a lot of revision.

The large Plesiosaurus soft toy measures fifty-three centimetres long from the tip of its nose down to the end of that stubby marine reptile tail. The smaller baby Plesiosaurus measures thirty-five centimetres in length. Everything Dinosaur is delighted to welcome these two new additions to its huge range of prehistoric animal soft toys.

Everything Dinosaur – Helping to Educate and Inform

Everything Dinosaur is made up of a dedicated team who write about anything and everything to do with dinosaurs, fossils and other prehistoric animals. Our features, articles and news stories are posted up on this, our blog site. The blog was established nearly ten years ago, with the aim of providing open access to news about palaeontology, new model releases, research into dinosaurs and updates on fossil discoveries. Our blog articles also provide an insight into Everything Dinosaur’s work with schools, museums and other educational bodies as we strive to help inform and educate with regards to the amazing story of life on our planet.

We aim to provide interesting and informative articles on palaeontology and other Earth sciences as well as to highlight good teaching practices that we find on our visits to schools. It is great to be able to showcase the work of students, helping them to become enthused about the sciences and helping to feed their curiosity.

Writing Blog Posts

We try to produce blog posts that minimises jargon and the use of technical terms. Our blog is aimed at dinosaur fans, model collectors, teachers and those who share our passion for learning about prehistoric life.

The articles and features that we produce can be used by fellow teachers, teaching assistants and home educationalists. In order to provide further support, Everything Dinosaur also manages a website dedicated to schools, all helping to support the recently introduced science curriculum at both the primary and secondary levels of education.

Everything Dinosaur has launched a brand new website and very good it looks to with visitors commenting on how easy it is to navigate, to search for items and the clarity of the images. However, existing account holders may encounter a problem attempting to log into their accounts. Not to worry, first we will explain why existing account holders might be experiencing a problem, next we will show you the simple solution.

HTTPS versus HTTP

The address of the Everything Dinosaur website: Everything Dinosaur’s Website has been slightly changed. If the old address is stored in your favourites or if you have it pinned to your tool bar, the link will still work and you can find us. However, rather than the address of our website beginning “http” it now starts with “https”. You can see this for yourself in your own browser when you visit our website.

HTTP and HTTPS – What’s the Difference?

HTTP means “hypertext transfer protocol” the set of rules that computers use for sharing information on the internet. HTTPS stands for “hypertext transfer protocol secure”. Our new website is more secure, it is extra protection to help keep our customers and their information safe. When a computer uses HTTPS to communicate, the data is scrambled to that no one in between two communicating parts of the world-wide web can read this data.

Existing Account Holders May Have to Change Their Password

Extra security is great, it’s all part of Everything Dinosaur’s customer service. However, existing account holders may have to change their password in order to access their account. The new HTTPS part of our address is, in essence, asking you to change your password to ensure that your data remains secure.

Changing your account password on our new website is simple. Here is what you need to do:

• Visit our new website at: Everything Dinosaur.
• On the right of the home page, near the top click on the “My Account” button

• When you click on the “My Account” button, you should land on the following page:

Resetting your password (Everything Dinosaur).

How to reset your password.

Click on the “lost your password” link (see above).
Put in your user name or email address and then you will be taken to the “reset password”, click on the button (highlighted above) and you will be sent an email with a link to set a new password.

Making a Password “Strong”

Here are some tips to make your password strong and secure.

Use a unique password for each of your important accounts.
Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols in your password.
Don’t use personal information or common words as a password.

Within the “account settings” of your own account you can reset your password and there is even a helpful “generate password” button which will automatically give you a new, strong password.

Remember: If you change any of the settings on your account, such as your password, remember to scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “save changes” button to save your updates.

This accolade follows on from similar recognition being awarded to the company’s excellent Sauropelta. Back in 2015, in a survey of the best prehistoric animals undertaken by “The Dinosaur Toy Forum”, Safari Ltd models occupied three of the top eight places. The model of the armoured dinosaur Sauropelta came out on top. Once again, dinosaur fans and collectors were recognising the efforts the company puts in when it comes to designing figures.

At Everything Dinosaur we share this mindset and as we prepare for another busy week of delivering dinosaur and fossil themed workshops in schools, it is worth reflecting on the contribution to children’s education that organisations like Safari Ltd make. For instance, the company provides an educational resource which allows visitors to learn more about the animals that inspire the Safari Ltd design team. Entitled “SafariPedia”, the company has developed the concept of providing “toys that teach” and introduced a database that provides interesting facts and information about the animals in their range.

The “SafariPedia” portal is divided into various categories, in essence it reflects the main product lines of the company. There is a farm section, fantasy, a dogs and cats category, a section on birds, sea life and of course wildlife. Our attention was drawn to the “dinosaurs” section of the portal. Like all the various categories that make up the “SafariPedia” database, the prehistoric animals are listed alphabetically and when the name of any ancient creature is clicked, a new page opens up providing lots of information about that particular animal. This resource is a great addition to the company’s prehistoric animal model range.

Today, Everything Dinosaur has launched its new website, part of a major investment programme for the UK based specialist retailer of dinosaur models and toys. The site has been redesigned to make it much more user friendly, especially for those visitors that access Everything Dinosaur via a mobile device. The improved layout is easier to navigate and the customer breadcrumb trails and product search functions have been made more efficient and intuitive.

The site has improved security features to ensure that all customer data is held safely and in accordance with best practices for web-based retailers. New shipping options are being offered for the company’s growing number of international customers. For example, there are now tracked and signed options available for all countries that currently offer such postal services.

This will help dinosaur fans to keep up to date with new products which have come into stock.
